Pitstop nicht nur fรผr Radfahrer in Dรคnemark

Lara walked along the tracks following a path worn by pilgrims and then turned into the fields. Here she stopped and, closing her eyes, took a deep breath of the flower-scented air of the broad expanse around her. It was dearer to her than her kin, better than a lover, wiser than a book. For a moment she rediscovered the purpose of her life. She was here on earth to grasp the meaning of its wild enchantment and to call each thing by its right name, or, if this were not within her power, to give birth out of love for life to successors who would do it in her place.โ€

Driving 265km up to my son with some gear before relocating to France, so after 2 hours driving I need to stretch the legs...

Traveling on the back roads. How could we not stop and play with great scene like this?

Hoverfly

Insect

Although these brightly-coloured insects look like bees or wasps, they are in fact true flies and do not sting. Hoverflies are excellent examples of Batesian mimicry (named after H W Bates who first described it in 1862). They generally mimic bees and wasps โ€“ insects that sting and also taste unpleasant, so are avoided by predators. Drone-flies mimic honey bees, Volucella bombylans (pictured) has several different forms mimicking bumblebees, while others species are very convincing wasp mimics.

There are about 250 different hoverfly species in Britain. You can generally see plenty of adults on flowers throughout spring, summer and autumn. Hoverfly larvae are varied too โ€“ some even resemble small slugs. They all have different feeding habits. For example they may eat plants, feed on rotting wood and fungi, attack bulbs or parasitise other insects.

More well known and welcome in the garden are those that eat aphids and other pests eg Syrphus spp. Rat-tailed maggots, larvae of the dronefly Eristalis tenax, are found in polluted pools and extend their tail breathing tubes to the surface to breathe.

What does it eat?

Adults eat drink nectar and eat pollen and honeydew. Some species feed on dead insects. The larvae of different species eat different things. Some eat aphids.

When will I see it?

Between March and November, depending on the species.

Where will I see it?

Hovering near and resting on flowers. Many seem prone to entering conservatories and greenhouses.

Dragonflies -

A dragonfly is an insect belonging to the order Odonata, infra-order Anisoptera (from Greek แผ„ฮฝฮนฯƒฮฟฯ‚ anisos "uneven" and ฯ€ฯ„ฮตฯฯŒฮฝ pteron, "wing", because the hindwing is broader than the forewing).

Adult dragonflies are characterized by large, multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong, transparent wings, sometimes with colored patches, and an elongated body.

Dragonflies can be mistaken for the related group, damselflies (Zygoptera), which are similar in structure, though usually lighter in build; however, the wings of most dragonflies are held flat and away from the body, while damselflies hold the wings folded at rest, along or above the abdomen.

Dragonflies are agile fliers, while damselflies have a weaker, fluttery flight. Many dragonflies have brilliant iridescent or metallic colors produced by structural coloration, making them conspicuous in flight. An adult dragonflyโ€™s compound eyes have nearly 24,000 ommatidia each.

Fossils of very large dragonfly ancestors in the Protodonata are found from 325 million years ago (Mya) in Upper Carboniferous rocks; these had wingspans up to about 750 mm (30 in). About 3000 species of Anisoptera are in the world today. Most are tropical, with fewer species in temperate regions.

Dragonflies are predators, both in their aquatic larval stage, when they are known as nymphs or naiads, and as adults. Several years of their lives are spent as nymphs living in fresh water; the adults may be on the wing for just a few days or weeks. They are fast, agile fliers, sometimes migrating across oceans, and are often found near water.

They have a uniquely complex mode of reproduction involving indirect insemination, delayed fertilization, and sperm competition. During mating, the male grasps the female at the back of the head or on the prothorax, and the female curls her abdomen under her body to pick up sperm from the male's secondary genitalia at the front of his abdomen, forming the "heart" or "wheel" posture.

Loss of wetland habitat threatens dragonfly populations around the world. Dragonflies are represented in human culture on artifacts such as pottery, rock paintings, and Art Nouveau jewelry.

They are used in traditional medicine in Japan and China and caught for food in Indonesia. They are symbols of courage, strength, and happiness in Japan, but seen as sinister in European folklore. Their bright colors and agile flight are admired in the poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson and the prose of H. E. Bates.

My co-driver Ian and crew chief Kim have just finished finished buckling me into the car during the driver change in the enduro. Can't move till the crew chief moves as she is timing the mandatory 2 min pit stop. Darrell Bryant took the photo and owns the rights to it. I have his permission to use it, if you do you need his written permission.

Five in the morning and a broken bicycle

Destination: Crater Lake on Volcano Island. Two options: Hike or get on a horse (for a fee). Our choice: Hike.

It was one dusty trek... one of my friends said I was like a "choo-choo train" (his words)... wherever I went I made a big cloud of dust. No wonder he always got left behind. He did it on purpose. To stay away from me and my cloud of dust.

Back to my photo...this is our pitstop halfway through.
