This tree reaches a size of 15-25 m tall, with thick trunk and bark gray or reddish-brown. The leaves are olive green or green grass, and measure 12-30 cm long. It cones solitary or two that open when ripe like roses and are bright yellowish brown or reddish brown.

The loblolly pines are almost in bloom. This tree is responsible for the yellow clouds of pollen that will appear two to three weeks from now. It coats everything yellow and makes people miserable.
I loved the look of the wet bark + lichens on the north facing side of this pine tree.

In spring, the bright, carmine-red pollen cones provide a dramatic contrast to the long, twisted, blue-green needles of this Japanese White Pine. The compact, rounded shrub or tree develops a wide, irregular, upright habit that makes a nice architectural accent.

Recently described (2008) this species is confined to high altitude forests of the Mexican Sierra Madre Oriental. It differs from the related but allopatric P. strobiformis in cone and seed morphology.
