Limber pine is very common in the Big Snowy Mountains especially on the exposed rocky ridges. It is also sporadic among the dense stands of Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) was not found in the area of the Big Snowy Mountains. Limber pine was genetically identified here using chloroplast DNA markers.

Especially during winter, the eye-catching, brillant-white candles of this popular selection of Japanese Black Pine create a striking contrast to the thick, glossy, green needles. 'Thunderhead' develops a dense, billowy, cloud-like form that may mature to a form as wide as tall.

With the cool temperatures of autumn, this extremely hardy, compact mugo pine becomes an electric yellow color that persists through the cold season. Great for containers, the rock garden – or any landscape space that needs a little spark of color during the dreary winter months. Pinus mugo ‘Wintersonne’ loves full sun, well-drained soil, and responds well to spring candle pruning if a more compact form is desired.

This site lies just north of Pinchot Pass in the the Lake Marjorie basin, Sierra Nevada, Fresno County, California.
