Whitebark pine is common but patchy in occurrence in this area with much variation in the distribution of age-classes (young, middle-aged, and dead and dying comprise most populations) and no (or at least not much in the way of) signs of disease (e.g., blister rust and animal predation of oozing bark). This site lies just north of Pinchot Pass in the the Lake Marjorie basin, Sierra Nevada, Fresno County, California.

Mediterranean Stone Pine (Pinus pinea).

The number of nineteenth century specimens in Victoria of this quality is rare. It is significant at a State level.

The tree is located on the bank of the Werribee River downstream from the Southern Water Diversion Weir at River Bend Historical Park. A concrete pedestrian pathway follows the river bank in this park. The tree is visible and accessible from this pathway. It is not fenced off.

Pinus edulis, the state tree of New Mexico, is common to the Taos area. Perhaps most similar to the Mexican Pinus cembroides in having mostly 2 (3) needles per fascicle, the leaves of Pinus edulis are over 1 mm in width. This region that descends in elevation from Taos to Española transitions out of the expanses of sagebrush steppe and is essentially devoid of Bromus tectorum. This site lies along highway 68 just to the southwest of Taos, Taos County, New Mexico, about where the highway and the Rio Grande meet.

Deer Resistant

Long, slender, blue-green needles give this fast-growing, upright tree a delicate look. Branches aim skyward, so trees stay narrow and make a valuable contribution to tight spots that need a big presence with a small footprint.

German name: Rot-Föhre

Distinguished from the bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) by the broadly attenuate (not rounded) base of the pine-cone, each scale of which has no terminal prickle or weak one to only 1 mm, and an amber color to the resin on the pinecone. This pine species epitomizes the many stately conifer tree species of the Sierra Nevada. Along the John Muir Trail, this pine tree is common from south of Mount Whitney in the New Army Pass area north to somewhere just north of Mather Pass. It was not observed north of the Le Conte Canyon area. This site is where the JMT enters the south boundary of the Wallace Creek drainage.
