Pinus edulis, the state tree of New Mexico, is common to the Taos area. Perhaps most similar to the Mexican Pinus cembroides in having mostly 2 (3) needles per fascicle, the leaves of Pinus edulis are over 1 mm in width. This region that descends in elevation from Taos to Española transitions out of the expanses of sagebrush steppe and is essentially devoid of Bromus tectorum. This site lies along highway 68 just to the southwest of Taos, Taos County, New Mexico, about where the highway and the Rio Grande meet.

Zitat aus meinem Reiseführer ("Malta" von Michael Bussmann): "Die Geschichte der Walfahrtsstätte Ta'Pinu begann am 22. Juni 1833. Damals stand an dem Ort der Basilika eine Kleine Kapelle, die von einem frommen Mann, den man Pinu rief, gepflegt wurde. An jenem Tag betrat die Bauersfrau Carmela Grima die Kapelle und vernahm die Stimme der Heiligen Jungfrau. Diesem Ereignis folgten Wunderheilungen, und durch in der Kapelle gesprochene Gebete soll Gozo im Gegensatz zu Malta von der Pest verschont geblieben sein. Spenden ermöglichten daraufhin den Bau der im neuromanischen Stil errichteten Kirche, die 1931 eingesegnet und bereits ein Jahr später von Papst Pius XI. zur Basilika erklärt wurde. Die Originalkapelle aus dem 16. Jahrhundert wurde vollständig in das Bauwerk integriert." WEIL, so unser Jeep-Fahrer Valentino, beim Versuch die Kapelle abzureißen zwei Bauarbeiter verletzt wurden - ein eindeutiges Signal von Gott, daß die Kapelle gefälligst bitteschön in Ruhe gelassen werden soll...
Drin waren wir leider nicht, die Kirchen sind hier oft zu, besonders morgens, abends, mittags und nachts ;D
Limber pine is very common in the Big Snowy Mountains especially on the exposed rocky ridges. It is also sporadic among the dense stands of Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) was not found in the area of the Big Snowy Mountains. Limber pine was genetically identified here using chloroplast DNA markers.

Distinguished from the bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) by the broadly attenuate (not rounded) base of the pine-cone, each scale of which has no terminal prickle or weak one to only 1 mm, and an amber color to the resin on the pinecone. Tawny Point sits in background. This site is in the Tyndall Creek area south of Forester Pass.
Distinguished from the bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) by the broadly attenuate (not rounded) base of the pine-cone, each scale of which has no terminal prickle or weak one to only 1 mm, and an amber color to the resin on the pinecone. This site lies along Woods Creek just north of the Woods Creek crossing.

Monterey Pine (Pinaceae) - Alice Holt, Farnham, Surrey.
The genus Pinus (Pines) has leaves (needles) which have shoots with bunches of 2, 3, or 5 leaves, each bunch enclosed in a sheath of papery bracts. The number of needles helps identification, but occasionally there are bunches with a nonstandard number of leaves, so several shoots need to be examined. Cones are mostly more or less egg-shaped (ovoid) with hard, woody scales.
The leaves of P. radiata are in bunches of 3, bright green, narrow and 10-15cm long; cones are on long stalks and very swollen on one side, forming dense, persistent back-pointing clusters with scales lacking spines; bark greyish- to reddish-brown and fissured.
Limber pine (tree to left of center) is scattered on the north side of Big Southern Butte and variously in upper elevations in this area of the Snake River plains, including in sagebrush steppe (both Wyoming Big sagebrush and little sagebrush dominated settings). The more common trees on this slope are Doulas-fir and lodgepole pine.
The five needles per fascicle and the large woody cones that persist intact after falling to the ground are characteristic of this pine species. This site lies along the road below the summit of Big Southern Butte, Butte County, Idaho.
