I really don't know my California pines very well, shame on me.
Photographed along Mines Road/CA130, Santa Clara County, California
Pinus longaeva, southern White Mountains, along White Mountain Road near the S boundary of the Bristlecone Pine Forest Reserve, Inyo Co., CA, 14 Jul 2015.
Similar to western fescue (Festuca occidentalis) in having a predilection to dry habitats in coniferous forest understory, bearded fescue tends to grow among and protrude out of dense understory vegetation (e.g., stands of Rubus parviflorus, Rubus idaeus, Symphoricarpos albus, Prosartes trachycarpa). Bearded fescue also has stems that are green and an inflorescence in which the two or so lowest nodes bend outwards in a descending manner. The inflorescence is very similar to that of western fescue, for example, in that the terminal portion is a nodding or outwardly arching contracted panicle. The stem leaves of bearded fescue are distinctively broad, upwards of 10 mm across, and the ligule of the stem leaves is not bilobed or stair-stepped.
