Zone: 3

Height: 6.5ft. tall and 9ft. wide

This is a very slow growing, compact, dwarf evergreen conifer with attractive, golden-yellow, needle-like foliage and small cones on mature plants. It has a dense, rounded growth habit with flat top and rather irregular shape when young.

Longleaf pine, Roy E. Larsen Sandyland Sanctuary, Silsbee, Hardin County, April 2016

This is the last of the preserves we visited before our field trip. A week later we returned to the Pitcher Plant Trail and this Preserve.

Distinguished from the bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) by the broadly attenuate (not rounded) base of the pine-cone, each scale of which has no terminal prickle or weak one to only 1 mm, and an amber color to the resin on the pinecone. Tawny Point sits in background. This site is in the Tyndall Creek area south of Forester Pass.

The National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu (Maltese: Santwarju tal-Madonna ta' Pinu) near Gharb on the Island of Gozo, Malta. The blue sky and the Mediterranean sea make a beautiful backdrop for this Catholic church which was consecrated in1932. Building the church took twelve years.

Whitebark pine is common but patchy in occurrence in this area with much variation in the distribution of age-classes (young, middle-aged, and dead and dying comprise most populations) and no (or at least not much in the way of) signs of disease (e.g., blister rust and animal predation of oozing bark). This site is by Upper Palisade Lake looking south towards Mather Pass.

On the way to the Col de Bavella (Bavella pass, 1318m), you can enjoy the stunning scenery of the Alta Rocca mountains (Corsica).

Pinus laricio (Pinus nigra subspecies) is one of Corsica emblems.

Pinus aristata is distinguished from the other bristlecone pines to the west by leaves with the abaxial surface with a strong, narrow median groove and scales of the seed cone bearing a terminal slender prickle mostly 6-10 mm long (the other bristlecones lack this long aristate prickle). This site lies along the base of the south shoulder of Sante Fe Baldy, Santa Fe County, New Mexico.

I've been really impressed by the growth rate of these pinus pinea seedlings. Sown in spring and already measuring more than 20 cm tall. Not too bad considering where it's growing! I don't even think our native pinus sylvestris grows this fast from seed. And there are lots popping up in the garden every year...

edited with fake velvia tonal curve in gimp. Yes, i could have used a 'real' camera in the first place, the dslr is nice for practicing though. When i got a bit experience, i likely switch back to film :-)

Especially during winter, the eye-catching, brillant-white candles of this popular selection of Japanese Black Pine create a striking contrast to the thick, glossy, green needles. 'Thunderhead' develops a dense, billowy, cloud-like form that may mature to a form as wide as tall.

This is the kind of pines that bear edible pine kernels. It's more than 100 years old -because of its heigt and because it's planted near an old house, and they must be about the same age. The clouds rumbled, but were just full of hot air.

The branches below belong to a prunus sown by my grandfather. There's a spring nearby and the rest of the trees are olives, so this is the landmark.

Zone: 4-7

Height: 20-50ft. tall and wide

Deer Resistant

Commonly known as Japanese White Pine. It is a dense pine that tends to develop spreading branches and a somewhat flattened crown with age. Needles in bundles of five are an attractive green, with each needle having an interior white stripe. Oval, reddish-brown cones and bark on younger trees is gray, aging to scaly dark gray.

Close-up of a Danish pine tree.

PInus pinea, pin parasol

"Pinus sylvestris, 2016, Scotch Pine, PYE-nus sill-VESS-tris, 40 Ft Large Conifer, Z2, , Bloom Month --, In Bed U3 for 19.0 years

Scots pine is a species of pine native to Europe and Asia, ranging from Scotland, Ireland and Portugal in the west, east to eastern Siberia, south to the Caucasus Mountains, and as far north as well inside the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia."

Zone: 3-7

Height: 8-10ft. tall and 6-8ft. wide

This exciting, new offering has long, thin, vibrant-yellow needles that stay brightly-colored year-round. Interior foliage that is shaded stays fresh-green, so the yellow really stands out. Large, open and upright, the symmetrical pyramid, best planted in full sun, seems to reflect the rays of the sun back into the garden.

Shot this after the snow started melting with my 60mm Marco.

Limber pine is very common in the Big Snowy Mountains especially on the exposed rocky ridges. It is also sporadic among the dense stands of Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) was not found in the area of the Big Snowy Mountains. Limber pine was genetically identified here using chloroplast DNA markers.
