Well dressed and well fed, the aviators of the Great War could return from their missions to warm shelter and a place of relative safety behind the front. However, you still had to return from the mission and thousands of aviators failed to return. This British pilot was one of those that failed to return.

With a 'No.1 Pilot' board attached to one of its cab-end lamp irons and with a shunting pole and black bin bags over the rear buffers, Class 08 08647 -'Crimpsall' in retro LNER green livery was one of the works pilot 08's on display at Doncaster Works open day on July 12th 1992.
The loco had been built at the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway works at Horwich as D3814, new in February 1957. Its first home was on the Western Region at Newport Pill (86B). D3814 was renumbered to 08647 in March 1974 and fitted with air brakes in May 1975. It eventually gravitated to Doncaster Works where it became one of the works pilot locos, gaining a retro green livery and carrying the name 'Crumpsall'. It was officially withdrawn in April 1997 and ending up at Crewe Works for disposal. 08647 has since been scrapped.

I took this shot last year down in Arundel when they had a festival on. It's a V8 Pilot which happened to be parked in one of the back roads. It was gun metal grey in colour which really suited the car.

Mural "Pilot", Kolekcja Malarstwa Monumentalnego, ul.

more experiments with black backgrounds - this time I realised my Ipad was a glossy black mirror when turned off, so I took this photo making sure nothing but the figure and reflection was visible.
