explored #45 :)

Does lifting your phone in the air really improve your signal?

The signal bars on our smartphones are one of the great mysteries of modern living, but EE's top network expert, revealed the truth behind our mobile-flailing antics.

According to Howard Jones, the Head of Network Communications at mobile network EE, waving your phone around doesn't make a difference to signal – and could make your signal even worse.

He warns that "if you cover antennas up with your hand, for instance, your hand does get in the way, because the radio waves have to get to the antenna. Your hand being in the way can limit the amount of signal you get".

The direction of phone-waving doesn't really matter, saying that "up, down, left, right" makes "no difference. It's more about where you are.

"What does make a difference is proximity to stuff. If you're in your house, you could lean out the window, if you've got thick stone walls," "Your hand in particular acts as a real barrier, albeit a small one. But the best way to get maximum signal is with headphones, and with your phone out of your pocket."

"Better signal strength will mean faster downloads and updates."

But your phone's mysterious signal bars don't necessarily always mean the same thing.

"One bar on a site with loads of capacity could be better than three or four bars on a site with not much capacity.

Well - and you see people all over the world doing it.

An old advertising brochure for the german "Pelikan" company.

It reads: "Day in, day out, millions of secretaries around the world fulfill their responsible task. They are their bosses right hand. They take up stenographs, write letters, make phonecalls and prepair conferences. But whatever they have to accomplish, they need good tools for it."

Message from the Universe:

"One kind person can make such a difference. One compassionate hand placed on a hand in distress can make such a difference. One phonecall, one thank-you note, one sweet text message can make every bit of difference.

One smile in the grocery store, one proclamation of forgiveness, one loaf of freshly baked bread, one handmade card, one offer to help can make such a huge difference.

It's the little things that make the heroes. It's the one thing, after one thing, after one thing. It's that one person who makes the difference.

Be the one."

I had a couple of rough days. Out sick for two days that actually necessitated the rare visit to the doctor's office that always prompts an endless lecture from the doctor. When I was finally well enough to crawl out of bed and get out I went to check on something at the slaughterhouse... knowing that Bumbo the Clown was eventually going to go back to the Slaughterhouse and leave a Bumbo button for me, I wanted to surprise Bumbo so I left a gift bag....nothing big...just something that I hoped would bring a smile. I wanted to see if it was still there. It wasn't. I was disgusted, thinking once again people had disappointed me by ruining something left in kindness for someone else. And then, as I was about to leave, I saw one of the Bumbo records! YES! Bumbo had been there.... which meant only one thing... well, actually two things.... it meant that they had found their gift bag.... AND somewhere there was a Bumbo button for me!! I ran back to the car and got my flashlight and started to search. The buttons were hidden well, but I found them! There were 3. I took 2 (because I lose everything, so I wanted a spare!) and I left one for someone else to find. Random acts of kindness.... this TOTALLY MADE MY DAY!! And when I got home, I found that Bumbo had left me a message on Facebook telling me where to find the buttons and thanking me for the gift bag. I'm really glad I didn't see the message before I went. The surprise was much more fun! Thank you Bumbo the Clown... whoever you are!!!

Random acts of kindness....

Ice coffee on my desk at work.

People that fan out scratch off lottery tickets in front of me and say "pick one."

Or...."I found a tripod, do you want it?"

Or..."If you are really that scared, I'll come stay with you."

Kind words from online friends.

Texts and calls from friends.

...And clown buttons....hidden on top of a door jamb in one of my favorite abandoned places.... and the promise...

"if I win the powerball I will hide a ridiculous amount of $$$ in your window-house (or whatever you call that place!)"

LOL!!

Be the one. Be the hero. ♥

My first attempt at capturing the sunrise thro Durdle Door, It started off with an early -2 start and long walk down to this location. I wasnt the only one down here was eventually was stood with a lot of other photographers, the reason there was so many is beacuse this is due to be the last sunrise thro the arch for a long time.

Im blody pleased with this image and want to thanks my good mate Andy for the phonecall!

My First Cutout! I was meddling with photoshop the first time today out of sheer boredom. (The rest of the world was not working, and no emails, no phonecalls) Somehow, I managed to do a cutout effect. :D

God's response on his voicemail: I never call back. live quietly, waiting if necessary, to beep, but shut up

This is Melbourne's modern art museum with it's fancy water walls in november 2015.

It was so obvisous I had to snap this guy at the middle of this waterfall arch in the wall.

The funny this is that I only carry prime lenses so I had It to move back several times to fill the frame. Hopefully he was to deep into his phone call. Thank you anonymous guy :)

Tied up with things to do/its the busyness that brings us to our knees

Today was one of those days when everything gets piled on you at once - or when you realize that everything was piled on you over an acceptable length of time, but you've procrastinated so long that you now have to work like a maniac to get it all done.

Damn me for spending my free lessons at college on flickr and not doing my psychology coursework!

My day started with a phonecall from my love though, soooo today was super awesome anyway! 10 second self timer killed on this one, had to waddle to my camera wrapped in tissue paper, set it off and waddle back without breaking any of it, nightmare!!

Park Avenue, Plateau Mont-Royal. Montreal, Qc, June 2021.

I think her Sprint network got distracted by the movie premier... trying something new... instead of exposing for the highlights I went with the shadows.

captured in the bustling pedestrian zone of amsterdam, this photograph showcases two men enjoying burgers at a well-known fast food chain. one man, deeply engrossed in his meal, bites into his burger with evident satisfaction, while the other, slightly distracted by a phone call, manages a bite amidst the conversation. the reflective glass of the window adds depth to the scene, mirroring the vibrant street life outside and blending the interior moment with the city's lively backdrop. this image beautifully captures the juxtaposition of personal moments and public spaces, highlighting the intersection of modern life and urban culture.
