The poppies are out! Its amazing how those gentle flowers persevere in the current heavy weather conditions.

October 22, 2022: May God bless us here in Florida. We're still cleaning up from Hurricane Ian and many are still accessing their homes by boat, as the St. John's River waters from the surge still have not subsided. We will never forget the 114 who died here in Florida and several in the other states. May God give those in need all they need to survive this tragedy, and the strength and courage to persevere. In the matchless name of Jesus, Amen.

How does a moment last forever?

How does our happiness endure?

Through the darkest of our troubles

Love is beauty, love is pure

Love pays no mind to desolation

It flows like a river through the soul

Protects, perceives, and perseveres

And makes us whole

This is a needle made of bone like those the Vikings used to make socks. I bought it in Oslo in 2017 and since then have been trying, on and off, to make sense of the youtube tutorials - the problem being that all of them show a different way of starting off, and all of them are incomprehensible when you are battling with needle, yarn, thumb and loops. Anyway, just for Macro Mondays, I persevered until I finally understood how to do the "cast on" row of the Oslo stitch. Now I have to work out how to do the rest of it. Crochet is so much easier. I can't get all the needle into the frame as it is four and a half inches long. Here you see the top two and three quarter inches of it.

per·se·ver·ance [pur-suh-veer-uhns] –noun 1. steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., esp. in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

A lone photographer points his long lens hoping to capture shots of Elk along the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park. I guess it's the lot of all photographers that if you want to get the shot you have to be at the right place and at the right time. And not only that, you must be patient and persistent. You never know when the light will change, your subject will move, or something will happen.

A great photo is usually not luck but often comes to those who persevere!

Taos Pueblo, New Mexico, USA

"Taos Pueblo is considered be the oldest continuously inhabited community in the USA.
The San Geronimo Church built in 1850 is a Registered National Historic Landmark. It is one of the youngest buildings in the village. It is an extraordinary example of the architectural achievements of the natives
. Today about 3/4 of the population shares in some of the Catholic practices while the native rituals perseveres 100% in daily life. The Native religion is verbally passed down from generation to generation.”

Taos Pueblo is the only living Native American community designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark.

Okay, okay ... silly old woman here. I was determined to take this shot of my 11+ year old cat's collar (which has been on her for 11 years) WHILE it was on her neck, rather than taking it off and laying it pleasantly on the stove. But tiny little Miss Teddie was most uncooperative! She was a wiggle worm, and most grouchy at the prospect of my trying to hold her, her collar, my camera ... anyway, I persevered! That bow is less than 1" wide. And I'm happy to exclaim "Buttons AND Bows" on a squirming object! Happy MACRO MONDAYS!

.. I laughed at a car with 3 cylinders and said it was a sewing machine with 4 wheels .. I know that wasn't nice .. please forgive me .. 😣

In flower terms, it corresponds to this beautiful and delicate daisy's ability to persevere and stand upright (and look amazingly good while doing it) despite days with little to no sun and nights with temperatures around or below freezing.

In relation to humans, resilience describes the ability of people or communities to survive difficult life situations such as crises or disasters without permanent impairment.

Resilience is a special power of the psyche to withstand stress - a distinctively courageous and life-affirming attitude. And it's something we all carry within us. So you don't have to learn it somewhere, you just have to train this skill. Whether we always look astonishingly good as our daisy is in the eye of the beholder. So there is no guarantee for that.

And so I wish you access to your resilience this week. No matter whether you need it or not.

Look within yourself and perceive this superpower that you were born with. Take it and be grateful for it. Because gratitude is an important part of resilience.

DafĂŒr gibt es also keine Garantie.

I was up at 7:30 this morning for a total gamble on this. The forecast was shite and had it clouding up by 11, but nevertheless, I persevered. Thankfully the clouds just vanished and the sun fell in to a huge blue patch right on cue. Made the 2+ hours drive more than worth it!

Perhaps the most wonderful thing of all is this: God lifts us not only from what we are by nature to what Adam was in the Garden of Eden, but to what Adam was to become in the presence of God, and would have been had he persevered in obedience. The gospel does not make us like Adam in his innocence – it makes us like Christ, in all the perfection of His reflection of God. - Sinclair Ferguson

Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum) - male

I do like a Ruddy Darter. So much character.

Challenging enough trying to pin one down and when you do find an agreeable individual they are always shifting position. Just when you think you have that composition down the little sod twitches it's head or tail 😁

This becomes a bigger nightmare when you have a stiff breeze - stiff enough to knock the subject right out of the viewfinder. That damn stem of grass was waving like an angry snake!

Still, I persevered until I had the shot I wanted

June was one long hot start to summer with very bright sunshine that has seriously begun to find it's way past the seals in my camera. Will my Agfa Isolette 1 make it to December, or will the bellows give up before the summer is over? I'm going to persevere and see how long I can use this basic folding camera that has given me so much joy before I have no choice but to send it for a major rebuild..

I headed out in search of a 'promised' sunset around Aviemore. The forecast had already started to deteriorate even before I set off but persevered in the hope of some winter colour. Things were not looking good when I arrived at my chosen 'destination', Loch Morlich on the Glenmore Estate at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains. I had not counted on the entire loch being frozen over with its own layer of snow, rendering it almost indistinguishable from the surrounding land. I decided to seek an alternative location and eventually gravitated to another old favourite, Loch an Eilein - the 'Loch of the Island'. I had been teased with some very short duration colour in the sky but it was long gone by the time I arrived leaving a very leaden backdrop. There was however, a small corner of the Loch which had remained clear of ice and the flat calm water allowed for some decent reflections of the snow-dusted hills. The island in question, which has a ruined castle upon it, can be seen beyond the central stand of trees.

Most of the US has been dealing with snow, some areas are measuring it in feet. Winter offers such wonderful opportunities for photos if you can persevere through the cold and snow.

Well, the snow has gotten a bit deeper over the past week, but a few of the Quail have persevered and are still hanging around the Blackberry bushes. It's lovely to see them hanging around, hunting seeds and bugs. They sure become fluffballs to retain their body heat. Temp is in the 20's the past couple of days.

I should start by saying I don’t come to this side that often. There’s that horrible winding road from Redruth to Helston, and that’s before the last section down to and beyond the village of Gunwalloe. Why can you always be sure you’re going to meet a tractor flailing its appendages about like a Tyrannosaurus Rex in an irritable mood and towing an enormous trailer full of winter beet on a blind bend just where the lines in the middle of the road disappear? Why put yourself through all of this when your beloved north coast is three miles away from the end of the drive?

Of course I should have waited a few more days. I nearly cheated and altered course for Gwithian as usual, but the voice inside my head told me to persevere as I followed the signs for that wearisome drag down to Helston. It might have been Thursday, and the bank holidays might have all now passed, but the schools were still out and so were quite a lot of people. Not that they were at the beach when I arrived - no, they were busy clogging up the road, queuing in the opposite direction as I crept the last handful of miles down to the village, past the Halzephron Inn and finally towards the National Trust car park. The van barely made it out of third gear once I’d left the main road.

My archive tells me this was only the fourth time I’d ever been to Dollar Cove with the camera. Which came as no surprise. Neither did the fact that every other visit had been during the first two weeks of January. In fact when I look at my past exploits in this part of Cornwall, pickings are pretty slim; decent images almost non-existent. One solitary outing at Mullion; one at Kennack Sands, and another at Lizard Point. Even the hotspots of Kynance Cove and Porthleven share no more than half a dozen episodes between them. Don’t ask about my old home town of Falmouth. I may have grown up and raised my own family there, but as far as photography goes, we’re total strangers. I’ve never come close to getting a shot that didn’t look like one of the bland blue postcards outside the tourist shops on Church Street. Of course, living where I do, the drama laden north coast is going to be the obvious choice, but I really do need to head in this direction a bit more often because all of these places deserve some love. I was convinced that I hadn’t ever taken a decent shot here at Dollar Cove before too. But in fact I surprised myself by finding an image from seven years ago that I really liked a lot. It’s just a shame I wasn’t yet in the habit of keeping my raw files, because the edit is dismally dark and does the moment no justice whatsoever. I could have had another go at that composition this time around if only I’d been paying attention as I studied the tide times. Low tide, not high tide was at 1pm, so when I expected it to be going out, it was coming back in and fast, sloshing energetically around my wellies and the base of my tripod. I suppose the careless oversight tells a tale in itself. I’ve never made that mistake at Godrevy.

The reason I regard this, and most of the other spots around the south coast as winter locations is of course because of where the sun sets. And it helps that this beach is west facing. It seemed that a number of other photographers agreed. There were four or five of us getting in each other’s way. At one point I became aware of a presence standing just behind me. A dog had just charged into the sea and I assumed this was the owner. But I was wrong. “That’s a nice looking composition,” said a voice. I was pointing the camera at a group of rocks as the waves broke over them. “Can I take a look?” Before I knew it she was examining my camera. “What have you got? I’ve got an R5!” Sometimes I feel as if I’m being left behind with my antediluvian set up, you know. While so many others have been arming themselves with mirrorless gear, my two additions to the vault over the last twelve months have been extremely modest, purchased second hand for lightweight travel adventures and moving backwards in time rather than making any technological advances. I’ll just have to manage until I find a spare few thousand down the back of the sofa. As you do. Her husband smiled quietly. His job was to carry her gear. She moved further down the beach and started shaking her camera at the sea. ICM; it’s the new garlic bread.

By now I had moved from the right hand side of the beach, almost completely to the opposite end, changing lenses to close in on the subject. A long super highway of clouds floated towards Gunwalloe from the direction of Loe Bar, softly colouring the sky with pastels as I tried to catch the bigger waves smashing over the group of rocks in the frame. Stupidly I’d left the remote cable in the other bag, and with the light falling I could see that most of my images were blurred. There was nothing for it but to use the two second delay and hope my timing wasn’t off.

If nothing else, I now feel as if I understand what works here. Or at least what works for me. Forget the wider view, stick on a long lens, point your camera at the rocks and wait for a wave. I might try again soon. Once I’ve summoned up the courage for another battle with tractors on blind bends that is. You never know, I may even try coming in February, just for the sheer hell of it.

For now, I’m going to leave you all to enjoy January and wish you happy adventures. I’m not at all sure whether I’ll be able to hop onto the Wifi where we’re headed, but if I’m able, I’ll tune in now and again to see what you’ve been up to. Back soon!

A dense marine layer pours off the ocean at Point Arena CA. The land here is part of the Point Arena-Stornetta preserve and is part of the greater California Coast National Monument. This area is home to some of our greatest natural treasures.

I look at this image and I long to stand here again in the not so distant future. I take heart and gain solace knowing that this landscape, thanks to the goodwill and hard work of many conservationists will persevere throughout time.

Happy Fence Friday everyone.

Its quite a climb to this amazing lookout in Halls Gap in the Grampians. Rained all the way up to here - walkers going back down kept saying tit was fogged over and cloudy with no view. Glad we persevered! It started to clear just as we got to the summit.

I entered this image into a print competition at my camera club this evening. I didn't go as I don't really enjoy the experience of the judging so I have no idea how it did in terms of scoring. I'm assuming not very good. At any rate I put this one in just to confuse the judge a little as I'm sure that he or she would not know what to make of it. It was taken a couple of years ago and I remember I took along some A4 sized cards with a kind of mottled reflective surface on one side. I then curled the card behind the mushrooms to create that eerie background look and used a little led light panel to light the scene. Fingers crossed it didn't get the lowest score of the night... lol

UPDATE: Well, I wasn’t entirely wrong with my prediction. This finished joint second last (tied with another of my images for that spot!) with only one image scoring less points. 😣

The grasses were trying to take over our path but we persevered.

I spent the last 5 days wandering around the woods of Northeast Pennsylvania hiking and shooting fall color since we were robbed of our Autumn in Washington State due to fires, drought, smoke and overall climate change devastation that is threatening to take all that we have in the PNW. But I had to have an Autumn. As some of you know, Fall is my thang:) I pretty much put all of my photography eggs into one Fall Color Basket. So, there was no way I was letting the apocalyptic weather in Washington take Fall from me. I had to hike up and down some of the steepest and rockiest and slipperiest terrains to get my fix. And my legs fell off around mile 5 on the "back up" the trail. But I persevered. So we will call this little Beauty, "Perseverance Falls" ~ Happy Waterfall Wednesday! (I told ya'll I'd be back:)

Attempting to impale its prey on a rather blunt twig. It persevered for some time before it managed to wedge it in the crook and started to feed.

The Perseverance I actually want to mention is the one roaming Mars at the moment. Event easily overshadowed by the things happening in the world.

A few details about this piece of space exploration history, including a bit of sound of Mars 🚀Perseverence🚀

[0.5 sec, f/22, 35mm, ISO 65]

Perseverance is not hanging on to some course which we have set our minds to, and refusing to let go....I am coming to think that God (may He be praised in His great mystery) loves and helps best those who are beat and have so much nothing when they come to die that it is almost as if they had persevered in nothing but had gradually lost everything, piece my piece, until there was nothing left but God. Hence perseverance is not hanging on but letting go....But as you say so rightly, it is a question of His hanging on to us.

A Polynesian legend tells the story of Paiheotuu, a brave little heron who triumphed over a giant heron.

In the legend, Otuu nunamu, a big heron, had kidnapped the wife of King Tuoropaa. The king sent messengers to gather the herons to fight the giant, but they were all afraid. Only Paiheotuu, the little heron, accepted the challenge.

Despite several violent expulsions, Paiheotuu persevered. He fought bravely, repeatedly piercing the giant's stomach until he finally swallowed him whole.

After freeing the king's wife, all the herons proclaimed him king, recognising him as a great warrior who had done what all the others had failed to do.

This legend recalls David's battle with Goliath and symbolises the triumph of courage and determination over brute force !

Happy Sunday to all artists 😉

Now, im not normally in the habit of meeting strange men at 7am on a Saturday morning, but it was great to hook up with Norm and James this morning on Loch Ard, the light was poor until we moved down to the end of the loch , and we eventually saw a bit of cloud break and sun... but I persevered with my long exposure filter to get a bit of texture in the clouds...

mouldphotography.webeden.co.uk

I was on the look-out for these on my last couple of visits to Sandy Camp Road, but only had a couple of isolated sightings. Yesterday, they were knee-deep! Persevere!

Each morning, I typically read a number of newpapers while enjoying my morning coffee. I just couldn't do this today: too much disturbing news, ranging from the anxiety-producing to the utterly apocalyptic. Instead, I decided to post this image, one that always reminds me of the power of resilience.

This tree was found while hiking Paradise Canyon, just outside of St. George, Utah. I've hiked this place many times, and almost always photograph this tree as I'm passing by it. It's old, probably 100's of years old, and it clearly has suffered from the trials and tribulations brought to it by fate. But it's still alive. It has persevered.

I think it's a Bur Oak, but I'm not sure, and that doesn't bother me.

Errar es humano.

Perseverar es diabĂłlico.

To err is human.

Persevere is diabolical.

Send to crush the curls with the ass is therapeutic!

First time visitor to the Severn Vally railway, Loco no 73802 "Camelot" passes over Oldbury viaduct with the Gresley teak coaching stock.

The waterfront at beautiful Patonga on the Central Coast of New South Wales is more or less the end of the coastal road where it meets the barriers of Broken Bay and the mouth of the Hawkesbury River. This is a delightful small town and we were so glad we persevered through the busy roads of urban Central Coast to get there.

As you can see, it's a fishing village with several prawn trawlers moored offshore while the ferry waits to cross to the other side of the Hawkesbury and Broken Bay and terminates at the back side of Palm Beach, Barrenjoey Headland and Pittwater which essentially form the northern reaches and beaches of suburban Sydney. If you are looking for a fine area for a quiet holiday, this is it. We had to pass through Brisbane Water National Park on the final leg of the journey, full of the early wildflowers of late winter.

What looks like a graveyard for a few trees still harbours life as seen by the flourish of coppery leaves. I will be revisiting this area once the new buds start to take hold to see if this tree is still persevering. Taken in Kingsfield Wood, Buckinghamshire.

My wife Fran and I, along with our good friends Kevin and Bill, spent the day at this 16,000 acre park less than 2 hours north of our homes. We had a ton of fun and were fortunate to find and photograph all 4 of our target birds; this handsome Blackburnian Wabler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler and Blue-headed Vireo, plus a few surprises. Being able to recognize the songs and calls of the various birds is a tremendous help in locating them. Have a great weekend all my Flickr friends.

Thanks to all who take the time to view, comment on and favor my images. It is very much appreciated.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

I arose early this morning and travelled to the Vermilion Lakes, just outside the town of Banff, in Canada's Banff National Park. I had hoped to catch the sunrise, and was discouraged by some low-hanging cloud and light rain. I decided to persevere, though, and was rewarded with this sight.
