Easter Island, is Chilean territory, known locally in Spanish as Isla de Pascua. It's one of the remotest inhabited islands in the world and now has around 6000 residents, 60 percent are descendants of the aboriginal Rapa Nui. At the end of the 19th Century the population was just a little over 100, down from an estimated 15000 a few centuries earlier.

The nearest inhabited island is over 1200 miles away, Pitcairn, where the mutineers from HMS Bounty settled, it has only 50 residents, most of whom are descended from Fletcher Christian and his men. Anyway enough about Pitcairn, I would love to have went there, but alas we had to get back to Peru, where Machu Picchu had only just reopened to the public after extensive flooding and landslides. Anyway enough about Peru.

If you have the time or the inclination, Easter Island is a must see if you are in New Zealand or Chile, the only places from which direct flights were available at time of my limited research. Given the cost of the average package holiday, money is not a real barrier. However, the place is not exactly teaming with hotels and restaurants, but locals await every flight at arrivals, advertising their properties and live-in facilities,and this is how most travellers choose where to stay. We shared a place by the sea overlooking the South Pacific, enough said, really. Never seen anything quite like it to be honest. A real photographer would feast on a thousand and one photo opportunities here. The volcanic crater, in the south west,and the black volcanic rock coastline, are at least as spectacular, in terms of nature, as many of the 900 statues are, in terms of culture. Unfortunately, I travelled with a camera that cost £9.99 from Boots the Chemist, which was a big mistake, But the location is such that even I managed to get some good shots.

A large, big-headed diving duck with a gently sloping forehead and a stout neck. They are gregarious during the nonbreeding season, forming large single-species rafts or mixing with Redheads and scaups. It dives underwater to feed on plant tubers, seeds, and clams.

Today we make a small detour to the sea, namely to the Mediterranean Sea. Here lies the tourist resort of Livorno, which is very popular with tourists. However, my visit was neither for the town nor the beaches, but solely for this small castle by the sea, the Castello del Boccale. Basically even mainly the sea.

You'll find a really picturesque stretch of coast here and the castle (which is a private residence by the way) makes a very good photographic point of view.

For the past two hours, as I've been surveying this area, the sun has been hidden behind a band of cloud and most people with cameras just took a quick snap and then drove on. In the hope that I could be gifted with some light before sunset, however, let me persevere. Lo and behold, I was lucky.

I only spent one evening here, enjoying the sea and the sun and then drove on again during the night.

Somehow I didn't feel like going downtown at all during my tour.

Heute machen wir einen kleinen Abstecher ans Meer, und zwar ans Mittelmeer. Hier liegt der bei Touristen sehr beliebte Urlaubsort Livorno. Mein Besuch galt allerdings weder dem Ort, noch den Badestränden sondern einzig und allein diesem kleinen Schloß am Meer, dem Castello del Boccale. Im Grund sogar hauptsächlich dem Meer.

Ihr findet hier einen wirklich malerischen Küstenabschnitt und das Schloß (was übrigens ein privater Wohnsitz ist) macht sich aus fotografischer Sicht sehr gut an dieser Stelle.

In den letzten zwei Stunden, als ich den Bereich hier näher in Augenschein genommen habe, war die Sonne hinter einem Wolkenband verborgen und die meisten Leute mit Kamera haben nur einen schnellen Schappschuß gemacht und sind dann weiter gefahren. In der Hoffnung, dass ich vor Sonnenuntergang noch mit etwas Licht beschenkt werde könnte lies mich jedoch ausharren. Und siehe da, ich hatte Glück.

Ich habe hier lediglich einen Abend verbracht, das Meer und die Sonne genossen und bin dann bereits in der Nacht wieder weiter gefahren.

Irgendwie war mir bei meiner Tour überhaupt nicht nach Innenstädten zu Mute.

Visit this location at La Vie in Second Life

I have two reasons for the titel of this photograph.

First it is representing the goodbye from Porto Palafita da Carrasqueira and it's at the same time my favourite photo of the series. And second is this statement applying to a beautiful sunset as well. The real dramatic is often happening after the sun had already set.

As deeper it sinks as more red and purple tones are mixing in the orange and yellow at the sky. And only shortly before the light is fading away the spectacle of the colours is most beautifully.

So it's worth to be patient and to persevere a bit longer.

Ich habe zwei Gründe für den Titel dieses Bildes. Zum Einen repräsentiert es den Abschied vom Porto Palafita da Carrasqueira und es ist gleichzeitig mein Lieblingsbild aus dieser Serie. Zum Anderen trifft diese Aussage auch auf einen schönen Sonnenuntergang zu. Das wirklich Dramatische passiert oft nachdem die Sonne schon untergegangen ist.

Je tiefer sie sinkt um so mehr rote und violette Töne mischen sich in das Orange und Gelb am Himmel. Und erst kurz bevor das Licht verblasst, ist das Spektakel der Farben am schönsten.

Es lohnt sich also geduldig zu sein, und etwas länger auszuharren.

In these days of lockdowns and panic buying, I will post one photo or video from my archive each day, with the date of posting. In this way I will tell the world that I'm doing fine. If the photos stop, you can assume I'm not fine, or I've exhausted the archive.

One day I found a Praying Mantis egg swarming with newly hatched babies, it was Day One for them. Sadly they had no sense of occasion and would not pose for me, but I persevered and got this shot.

A number of years ago i started seeing what i could get by defocusing my camera lens as i was curious about this process. I must say it took a fair while to master the effect and to get an image that appealed to me . As well as that i found it mentally difficult as i was so conditioned to having at least the subject or subjects in focus , but i persevered and eventually came out of this mode. Now i really like to create images like this , i guess i like the dreamy quality and that they alter the way i normally see. Not everyones cup of tea but certainly now one of my favourite brews . So from the tea bag ( SD card ) to the hot water ( darkroom ) were it has been fine tuned especially with some dodging and burning and is now ready for you to take a sip : )

Today's morning greeting comes from my garden again, I had already threatened you with something like that. Here you can see a group of crocuses that were almost completely covered by a thick layer of snow overnight.

I love this type of imagery because it shows the battle of spring against winter, which struggles one more time before inevitably losing. The transitions between the seasons are always very exciting for me and often deliver particularly impressive pictures.

The second reason why I like this picture so much is that it conveys strength and vulnerability at the same time. Characteristics that are in each of us. We strive towards a goal, want to grow and blossom. But we face setbacks from time to time. Situations that discourage us and almost bury us under them. It takes strength to persevere here. This is the only way we can ultimately achieve our own goal.

I wish you all this perseverance and the will to personal success. And not just for the coming week.

Mein heutiger Morgengruß kommt wieder aus meinem Garten, ich hatte Euch sowas ja schon angedroht. Hier seht ihr eine Gruppe Krokusse, die über Nacht fast komplett von einer dicken Schicht aus Schnee verdeckt wurden.

Ich liebe diese Art von Bildern, denn sie zeigt den Kampf des Frühlings gegen den Winter, der sich noch einmal aufbäumt, bevor er unweigerlich verlieren wird. Die Übergänge zwischen den Jahreszeiten sind für mich immer sehr spannend und liefern häufig besonders beeindruckende Bilder.

Der zweite Grund, warum mir dieses Bild so gefällt ist, dass es Stärke und gleichzeitig Verletzlichkeit ausstrahlt. Eigenschaften, die in jedem von uns stecken. Sometimes; the first step in something can be the most difficult.....PERSEVERE!!!

Decorated Frames

Quite a few years ago I wanted to see something different in the way photography was presented when at Club and Outside competitions.

So I came up with these ideas. I used Newspapers, Wallpapers, plastic laminate or simply painted or sprayed paints on the front of the mounts. Sometimes plain, sometimes a bit more elaborate. Looking through the three boxes of prints I have left, I thought I might have had more, however I shall post the first batch.

They had a mixed reception when entered in competitions, club members in general were quite positive about them, the majority of Judges on the other hand did not like them. They really didn’t like them. Although I got a couple of really high marks out of 20.

I remember a film when the line “Endeavor to Persevere” was spoken, I never forgot it.

A very shy and secretive bird, rarely out in the open in front of the reeds. Perseverence and the aid of many trained eyes helped me spot this elusive bird.

This lovely church symbolizes the tenacity of the pioneers in the Village of Manatee. Construction began in 1887 but halted when a yellow fever epidemic claimed the lives of the pastor and many in the congregation. But the community persevered. Two years later, the church opened to house the first Christian congregation south of Tampa on the Florida mainland.

Durford Wood, Petersfield, Hampshire

Or it could have been titled "Return of the 65:24"😂

There is something about the 65:24 ratio that I find really compliments a lot of woodland photography imho.

It was an incredibly frustrating Thurs & Friday for me as there was widespread fog in the Hampshire/Wiltshire/Dorset area finally but I had early work meetings which I could not get out of 😭😭. I decided to just look on an OS map and see if there was anywhere near Petersfield I could go to on Thursday for about 30mins before I had to leave. The National Trust symbol on Durford Wood stood out so I took a punt.

I did feel some pressure as never been there before so it was a bit of a 'run & gun' but yesterday going through the shots I took and some from the Friday I felt they were OKish. I really like the start of winter when you get some stubborn coloured leaves hanging on to contrast with the brown ferns. then you just need fog!

Durford Wood is definitely a location I will return to as from what I could see it has potential and is well worth an explore.....especially if it's not hen I have early meetings! Wish I could afford to retire😣.

Many thanks to everyone who accompanied me for a year and encouraged me to persevere. It was a year of challenge. Sometimes I had little time to watch the sky to capture the "right" moment. Sometimes the sky was just blue or gray without clouds or special light. Posting a photo every day with this limitation to the sky was often very exhausting. But I did it thanks to the many visitors, favorites and comments, thanks to the friends I made. I am glad that I made this project. Now I will take a break and return from sky to earth.

Well, I guess we can rip up the old folklore rulebook about spring arriving after the robin has had three snows on its tail. This chilly robin is just dusting off the fifth snow that's been dumped on its tail now in March and winter shows no signs of departing soon. We are currently experiencing some of the coldest weather we've had all winter😣

There was a light rolling fog this morning which made its magic so I definitely did not want to crop. PLEASE ENLARGE to see how clear the extender picks up everything.

I have been taking a Wildlife Photography course this week where the instructor discussed using his Extender, so..... I went out early this morning to practice using the extender and was blessed with fog and herons disagreeing. Using an extender IS NOT for the faint of heart. Actually I missed some of the shots of this encounter because I was using a tripod and did not have time to zoom my lens back in to get the action.😣

New beginnings are a sure way to start a new life. The willingness to persevere surely goes a long way, especially if you find your inner peace. To start over this new year, you need to stay focused, have inner peace, create a positive attitude, and be passionate about your dreams.

The year 2020 has been quite a difficult one for most of us, the coronavirus pandemic did not only wreck our health and sanity, but also left quite a lasting impact on most of our lives. Finally, this rollercoaster of a year is coming to an end and the anticipation for better times is contagious. People all over the world are already establishing their New Year resolutions and plans. This upcoming year will give us the opportunity to start afresh and work towards rebuilding the world after the pandemic and even bettering ourselves in order to avoid such global suffering again. On a lighter note, the New Year celebration is a time for joy, great pomp and show across the world.
