The wind was blowing so hard, even the birds seemed to be hiding out! But we persevered with our Lee Filters and smoothed out the water and sky.

Greetings! If you are reading this you've survived the in-laws, the Huskies loss, and Santa has stopped by to the delight of all. :-) It's 17 years past Y2K and we are still here, time will tell if we can survive 4 years with a Neanderthal at the helm, but fingers crossed we will persevere. You folks had an amazing year, I saw a LOT of great shots last year and a lot of you have outdone yourselves recently, very cool to see and I'll be looking forward to your travels in the coming year. I do want to reiterate for those who missed it that I pushed the dreaded one pick a day button, it really made my life easier as I follow nearly one hundred people, I flat out don't have time for more than that, my apologies for crushed toes and bruised ego's but I have to find a way to make this work and still have a life out of this chair..... :-) I do enjoy my viewing time, so much to see, so if I miss something great give me a nudge and I'll stop by as soon as I can. I'm looking forward to seeing things that I've never seen this year, hope that I can bring you the same. :-)
as ever, best viewed large....

Every year I go to Eemnes to look for Godwits, and I have already posted many shots on my stream. I have always been trying to make pictures of their young, but until this year I couldn't make a decent shot of them. Many reasons, the grass is too long or my pictures are not sharp because it is difficult to focus on them or they disappear between the stems. And after a few weeks they are not visible anymore because the grass is too high.
Most frustratingly you know they are there because the parents always fly around your head, or they land very close beside you, making noise all the time, so you know their chicks must be around.
But if you persevere you might succeed, and here is one of the results. I chose this one because the Godwit in the background gives an impression how small this little chick still is.

Nearly gave up on trying to get a swallow in flight, but decided to persevere for a little while longer and it finally paid off
I walked the world afar
Built up a thousand walls
To try and hide away
I searched to find my soul
A journey far from home
Lost in a life I'd made
And I'd been 'round in circles
Living for the moment
I know I ran so far
Was acting kind of crazy
Coming up with empty
Felt like I lost my heart
Now I've found a love that
Is clearer than the deep blue skies
It's true You were right there
I can see it in the days gone by
I see You in the days gone by
Your promise never left my side
I know sometimes I tried to give up
Still You caught me when I fell from high
I see You in the days gone by
You took my fragile fate
And didn't hesitate
Your love in every scar
Passion with no restraints
Held back the darkest days
So now my life is Yours
You've got me when I'm broken
You're with me when I'm hopeless
I know You're never far
Your mercy has no ending
It perseveres unfailing
You'll always have my heart
Now I've found a love that
Is clearer than the deep blue skies
It's true You were right there
I can see it in the days gone by
I see You in the days gone by
Your promise never left my side
I know sometimes I tried to give up
Still You caught me when I fell from high
I see You in the days gone by
See You in the days gone by
See You in the days gone by
And I need You everyday 'cause
I see You in the days gone by
Your promise never left my side
I know sometimes I tried to give up
Still You caught me when I fell from high
I see You in the days gone by

Well, my foray into woodland photography was a bit beguiling! I spent a whole afternoon wandering around recceing potential composition, without much success. Then I spotted a waterfall and like a moth to a flame, I was setting up in one of my comfort zones. I hadn't a decent woodland image in my camera and I set off back to the car to head to the coast for a sunset.
On my way back to the car I spotted this scene with the tall Beech Trees lying in an almost swaying juxtaposition with each other and the little wooden bridge below in the dell. I played around with the composition as it wasn't easy to get into this position with a tripod. Anyway, I liked what I saw on the back of the camera and went back to the car a little happier.
I will have to persevere with this genre as compositions seem to elude me. Perhaps the autumn colours and repeated attempts may eventually unlock my woodland blindness.
Found this photo from last years snowstorm. It amazes me how they persevere even in a brutal storm!!
The Old Fox truck-stop on the A1, it used to be a pub ("The Fox"). It is still family run and gets very good reviews. It seems to be open evenings only. With it being a truck stop I tried to get a good bit of parking lot in the shot. I had stopped for a coffee in the "OK Diner" next to it on the way home from work. HP5+ is not my favourite film stock, maybe I've just been unlucky with lighting when I've used it, I will persevere.

For those of you who have visited Slimbridge WWT you will understand my 300 lens is a little limiting but as it's the most I can hold steady I just have to live with it. These birds are all wild but one is ringed, it has obviously mated with an un-ringed one which is great news.
Richard (husband) has a 600 lens & I tried that when photographing some deer the previous day - unfortunately they lost most of their antlers & parts of their heads 😣😣😣.

Colmer's Hill, Symondsbury, Dorset

So it's yesterday evening and various weather apps are saying there is a chance of fog in Dorset but only 1 of them says anything about it being at one of the specific locations I'm thinking of. So do I give in to the temptation dangled by a recent Daniel Wreatham video on YouTube and wake up at 02:30 😣to then drive 1hr 45mins to Colmer's Hill where 1 app indicates there will be a little mist or have another 30mins in bed and go to Corfe Castle where none of the apps say fog will be present but if it's anywhere nearby it's normally there?
I decide to set my alarm for 02:30 and see if I get up and have my coffee made in time for Colmer's Hill which I have only scouted once, nearly a year ago. Well as you can tell in the end the lure of a new location overcame the draw of Corfe partly because I expected there to be a lot of people on West Hill this morning and I hate crowds as much as a certain Mr Hardcastle!
Having done a scouting trip and armed with the Dorset Fotovue book I set out at stupid O'clock for the long(ish) drive. I managed to get the last space in the layby by Quarr Ln (I think the two cars there were from the houses opposite) and set off to climb to the top of Quarry Hill in the dark and find a shooting spot.
The above 6 shot pano was taken mid way through Blue hour before some of the higher clouds coloured up but at the time when you see the light and colour changing by the second and can realise what a wonderful world we live in despite Mr. P's megalomania and all the cost of living stuff we are all suffering from. The period with the light doesn't last long but it's truly my favourite time of the day.
As you can see from the photo I did get a bit of a reward for the effort. Nowhere near as epic as that Daniel Wretham video but he is a pro so has more freedom to come when he wants and he did say he'd been trying for years with no luck previously.
That's the thing with us Togs...we always know no matter how good or bad a shot we take is there is the chance of bettering it if we come back enough.
To those in the UK enjoy your long weekend. For me next weekend will be a doubly new experience as it will be my first shoot in Northumberland and also the first photography workshop I have attended! Wish me good weather and good photos everyone please!

Cormac McCarthy King of Munster once stood here and looked out over his land. No wonder he was in no hurry to give possession to Queen Elizabeth 1, delaying her with his Blarney.
Blarney Castle and the estate was confiscated from the McCarthy clan in 1690. It was sold and changed hands many times over the centuries. The current estate owner is Sir Charles St John Colthurst, Baronet.
Irish history is so tragic, Ireland is littered with ancient castles and churches like this, ruins without roofs. Memorials to the millions who died through wars and famine, to the culture and language lost, to the souls lost to slavery (yes an unknown FACT a huge number of Irish were taken as slaves and indentured servants and sent to the West Indies mostly Barbados) www.globalresearch.ca/the-irish-slave-trade-the-forgotten...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_immigration_to_Barbados ...least we forget!
Oliver Cromwell's attempt at Ethnic Cleansing almost succeeded but the Irish persevered somehow. Although we should and do forgive the English for what they did to us we will not forget. I want todays English population to know this history because most don't have a clue, the English history books tell a different story. Irish history is painful but the Irish have moved on and forgiven England. Nowadays we are who we are because of our history with England, in fact it's made us stronger.

Beauty cames from struggles, from falling over and over and over again and getting up again and again. It cames from roadblocks, figuring a way around them and working though them. It cames from being more brave than your fears. From heartbreaks and hundred of tears. True beauty is always the battles you have conquered. Perseverence, patience, determination, grit. And, of course, the beauty of being a genuinely compassionate human surpasses everything. There is nothing more truly gorgeous than a kind soul, wich makes an entire aura radiate.

American Redstarts are incredibly active insectivores that seem never to stand still. They rapidly spread their cocked tails, exposing the orange or yellow in a quick flash, which often startles insect prey into flushing, whereupon the redstart darts after it, attempting to catch it in the air.

The Moon Bridge crosses the outlet to a pond at the Kubota Garden. The bridge was constructed Fujitaro's sons in 1974 as a memorial to their father. The Moon Bridge symbolizes the difficulty of living a good life: "Hard to walk up and hard to walk down." Kubota was a man who knew all too much about the difficulties of life. He was born in 1879 in Japan and immigrated to the US in 1907. He established a landscaping company and worked hard and in 1927 acquired the land for the garden. During WWII, the Kubota family was interred in Camp Minidoka in Idaho. Two sons served in the US military during the war. After the war, the family returned and resumed working on the garden. There were back property taxes to pay, and the garden was severely overgrown. But Kubota persevered, establishing a beautiful garden which remains today. The garden was acquired by the City of Seattle in 1987 and is managed by the Parks Department.

WHITMAN COUNTY UNITED WAY FIRE RELIEF FUND
As we are well aware, the Western US has been burning. Yesterday, I stopped in on what is left of the small town of Malden, in Eastern Washington State.
The area is heavy with the noxious smell of everything that has burned, as well as the continuing pall of smoke coming up from California and Oregon from all of the other numerous fires.
I have visited Malden to take photos multiple times over the years and felt sick to see what had become of the area. Some of the residents who have lost their homes are living in campers on site.
It was surreal, like a black and white movie, as most color has either been burned up, painted with soot by the consuming flames, or muted by the fog of smoke hanging in the air.
This scene continues to play out again and again all over the West Coast.
I truly hope the folks of Malden and the numerous others that have suffered loss from the fires persevere.

Here is look back over a decade to a triple headed steam spectacular! This is the caption I wrote when this was originally shared on RP.net:
White Pass and Yukon Railway narrow gauge rotary snow plow #3 (Cooke 1899) is departing Glacier and crossing the curved trestles as it marches upgrade. This location is 14.1 miles from and 1871 ft higher than Skagway. The vintage snow fighter is being pushed by steam locomotives #73 (Baldwin 2-8-2 blt. 5-47) and #69 (Baldwin 2-8-0 blt. 4-07) with coach 211 trailing. #211 was built by AC&F in 1918 for Oregon's Sumpter Valley coming to Alaska during WWII courtesy of the US Army. The cupola was added in 1946. The White Pass is America’s busiest tourist railroad and an engineering marvel of any era. Regular tourist trains operate for the four month cruise ship season of mid-May to mid-Sept with the WP&Y largely dormant the remaining 8 months of the year. In days of old it was a 110 mile freight hauler supporting the Yukon mining industry and before that a major WWII supply conduit during the building of the Alaska Hwy. Like the town it calls home, the WP&Y was born during the heady days of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush and experienced booms and busts through the years but has persevered, and today is the most popular excursion for the hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit Alaska each summer.

‘There is no spiritual life without persistent struggle and interior conflict. This conflict is all the more difficult to wage because it is hidden, mysterious, and sometimes almost impossible to understand. Every serious Christian is willing to make a few initial sacrifices. It is not hard to make a good start. But it is hard to continue, to carry on the work begun and to persevere in it through many years until the end. … We are not “converted” only once in our life but many times, and this endless series of large and small “conversions”, inner revolutions, leads finally to our transformation in Christ.’
-Thomas Merton, Life and Holiness p. 116
