From the British Journal of Photography, 15 April 2009. "Photographers (not) going underground". London Underground has reminded photographers that they need a permit to take photographs on its property. This was always the case and it's not a 'rights grab' of any kind. The cheapest permit costs £30 plus VAT and is valid for one month.
I am delighted that I can now post some contemporary photographs. The conditions of my permits for South Bay kite aerial photography include a hiatus each year from the end of February to the start of September to avoid disturbing nesting birds. Thus, I eagerly await the start of fall and with it the chance to do some fieldwork.
On this occasion, I made a Wednesday trip to the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve (ELER) near Hayward, California. I launched the kite from the Oliver Salt Works ruins and walked the levee separating E13 from E12. I photographed this area just a week ago and was taken with the geometry and colors of the small sub-ponds that have been created as avian habitat in this area. This was a bonus session of sorts, as I had finished an earlier session over on Salt Ponds E10 and E11. Instead of joining the commute hour traffic, I decided to make this quick walk down to the pumphouse on the east side of E13. I reached the pumphouse and its adjacent marshes just as the sun was setting and that made for a pleasant end to the day.
I am taking these documentary photographs under a Special Use Permit from the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. Kite flying is prohibited over the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve without a Special Use Permit.

El edificio Isla Talcan N°01304 es el primero de los 420 departamentos de 18 condominios sociales que se demolerán en las poblaciones Francisco Coloane y Cerro Morado, en Puente Alto, y que fueron seleccionados durante el Primer Llamado del Programa Segunda Oportunidad con una inversión de 7 mil 304 millones de pesos.
The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) held the second of three community workshops for residents and businesses to create the Ala Moana Neighborhood Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Plan.
The workshop was held on Tuesday, February 19, from 6-8 p.m. in the McKinley High School Cafeteria. Mayor Kirk Caldwell and Dan Grabauskas, Executive Director and CEO of the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, are expected to attend.
The City is planning a rail transit station near the Ala Moana Center on Kona Street and residents and other stakeholders will be able to comment on the appropriate scale and location of new housing, jobs, and shopping choices near the station. Workshop participants were asked to bring their thoughts on preliminary ideas for new bike lanes, improved sidewalks, gathering places, and other enhancements in the area.
DPP held the first Ala Moana TOD workshop last August and conducted a community survey of residents within a half-mile of the train station. The February workshop offered residents an opportunity to provide input on the alternatives for the area and shape the emerging elements of the Neighborhood Plan.

Since she was legit and accompanied by 2 licensed drivers she got off scott-free and was never mentioned during the trial, although she was seen out clubbing with Judge Ito later that year...Who knew she had her learners permit?
Salt Creek Backpack Day 1: Jason and I originally planned this as an out and back trip. We had secured the required permits to camp at SC1 (night 1), SC3 (night 2), and then back to SC2 (night 3). At the last minute, Lisa was able to join us. We met up in Moab and drove to the Needles District back country desk where we lucked out and were able to exchange our SC2 permit (night 3) for a Salt/Horse Zone permit. With 2 vehicles, we could now do this as a through hike- perfect! The weather was looking pretty turbulent and it was possible we'd have problems getting our shuttle vehicle back out on the last day... but we went for it. We dropped our truck off at the exit point and loaded our gear into Lisa's Subaru. An hour later we were at Cathedral Butte TH.
The hike into SC1 is short (GPS tracked us at just over 4.5 miles). After a knee pounding descent from Cathedral Butte, we were in Salt Creek Canyon- home for the next 3 nights. We lucked out and no one was camped at nearby SC2, so we had the southern section of the canyon to ourselves. We set up camp in the last bit of light and settled in for a beautiful night at camp- perhaps the quietest conditions I have found anywhere.
Four day backpack down Salt Creek Canyon in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park: This was a big bucket list backpack for me. After some last minute changes due to the health of a close family member and some luck with the permitting system, we were able to pull this off as a through hike with our good friend Lisa. We spent 4 magical days in the canyon and lucked out with plenty of water and better weather than expected. Including side trips to ruins, rock art, and arches, we covered 35 miles and saw very few people. Life is good.

El poderoso pico de esta ave, accionado por músculos altamente desarrollados, le permite producir una fuerza trituradora de 25 a más de 40 kilos para abrir los huesos de cerezas, que son uno de sus alimentos favoritos en otoño e invierno.
El Picogordo Común, el mayor de los fringÃlidos españoles, crÃa en bosques caducifolios y en huertos de frutales, grandes jardines y lugares arbustivos salpicados de árboles. Son aves ariscas que prefieren posarse en las ramas más elevadas de árboles altos. En visitas de forrajeo al suelo, saltan más bien pesadamente. En invierno a menudo se desplazan a terrenos más abiertos, formando pequeños bandos para comer.
Su canto es débil, renqueante y rara vez se oye; pero en vuelo tiene un sonoro y distintivo «tsicc» metálico. La parada nupcial del macho, que en esta época se muestra particularmente agresivo y nervioso, incluye esponjamientos de las plumas de la cabeza y pecho, reverencias y caÃdas de alas, mientras la hembra se encara con él demostrando su instinto agresivo y dominador. Algunas veces la pareja toca sus picos en lo que parece ser un beso.
Identificación: Partes superiores pardo rojizas, inferiores color melocotón; babero negro y alas con hombros blancos; blanco en alas y cola visible en vuelo; pico muy grande, azul grisáceo en verano y amarillo en invierno; hembra más apagada.
Nidificación: La hembra construye un nido en forma de copa, de raicillas y hierba con basamento de ramitas y musgo, normalmente en rama alta; a veces revestido con pelos o fibras; pone, de abril a mayo, de 4 a 6 huevos verde azulado claro o verde grisáceo con marcas pardo oscuro; incubación, sólo por la hembra, de unos 12 dÃas; los pollos, cebados por ambos padres, dejan el nido tras unos 15 dÃas.
Alimentación: Pepitas de frutos y semillas grandes; a veces majuelos y hayucos; ocasionalmente insectos.
Hábitat: Bosques.

En un ejercicio que le ha permitido acercarse a 36 comunidades indÃgenas para ayudarlas a mejorar su calidad de vida en un marco de respeto por su cultura y sus costumbres, la Estrategia Unidos adelanta el acompañamiento a 2.296 hogares en Amazonas, de los cuales cerca de 2 mil, equivalentes a un 88 por ciento del total, corresponden a grupos étnicos asentados en los municipios de Puerto Nariño y Leticia.
Asà se indicó en el marco de la visita de seguimiento que realizó el director general de Prosperidad Social, Nemesio Roys Garzón a la capital del departamento, en la que se reunió con el equipo regional de Prosperidad y cogestores de la Estrategia Unidos, que en Amazonas prevé dar la máxima cobertura a 4.211 hogares focalizados que están recibiendo la oferta social del Estado y mejorando sus logros en la búsqueda de la superación de sus condiciones de pobreza.
"Estamos haciendo el máximo esfuerzo para llegar a todas estas comunidades. Es asà como en el Amazonas, a pesar de las distancias y las difÃciles condiciones de acceso, estamos llegando con la estrategia de atención integral que les permita paso a paso, ir mejorando sus condiciones de vida", explicó el director Roys Garzón.
La Estrategia Unidos en Amazonas, cuenta con 23 cogestores, 15 de los cuales proceden de las etnias de las comunidades Tikunas, Witoto y Boras. Esta caracterÃstica del modelo étnico ha sido especialmente importante no solo en este departamento sino en todo el paÃs, para facilitar el contacto y hacer más efectiva la acción con las comunidades que por sus caracterÃsticas y situación histórica hacen parte de los sujetos de especial protección en sus derechos - indÃgenas, afrodescendientes y rom -.

La Comunidad de Madrid ha destinado 301.000 euros al nuevo parque del barrio del Pijorro, en Navalcarnero, un pulmón verde que cuenta con una extensión aproximada de 13.500 m2 y que hoy ha visitado el consejero de Medio Ambiente, Administración Local y Ordenación del Territorio, Jaime González Taboada.
La inversión realizada ha permitido acondicionar este espacio verde con caminos adaptados, nuevo mobiliario y zonas de jardinerÃa.
