Very shortly after I’d taken the slow shutter-speed shot of the water, this chap ran along the edge of the bathing pool and simply leapt into the churning sea and paddled off in search of his wave. I just managed to crank up my iso enough to catch him and I fired off a couple of shots. It all happened so quickly.

Most of our Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have headed South. This was a male taken at the beginning of the fall migration. Interesting that the males practice FIFO (first in, first out) They leave the females and the young ones behind as they are in a hurry to get on the road again.

Not all Northern Cardinal photos are created equal. This handsome fellow picked the perfect spot with blue sky behind him and great light.
What an amazing Monarch season this was on Long Island, with very few that didn't make it...
This beautiful girl is #718 - Females: 353 / Males: 365
She will be spending the night and after a delicious breakfast, I hope she will be able to take flight tomorrow...
as it is now, she will be fasionably late for the party.... but better late than never!!

This shot took me ages as the sun was directly behind the bird. Fortunately it was more than happy to sit patiently for me.
On the wall opposite in perfect light it's pall was having none of it and cleared off well before I was close enough for a shot.

It's early enough in the season that some dragonflies are "young" enough to still have every bit of their wings. It's so sad to see them weeks later when the wings are in tatters. This one is a Four-spotted Skimmer, the state insect for Alaska.

On rare occasions things just all seem to fall into place. With this beautiful Painted Lady we had a great subject, light, background etc. The migration is ending in our neck of the woods. Always something to look forward to next year.
MRL 265 leading a ballast train on the 5th Sub, creating a perfect scene, a standard cab leader, mountains, & fantastic evening light. This was a great chase through the mountains & hills of the MRL 5th Sub. Here we are located just East of the town of Whitehall, MT where this train will tie down at for the night before being dragged into the Pipestone loading area to load up some more ballast.
