Taken in the middle of the day with high, thin cloud and a haze over the water almost obsuring the oil refinery. The sky was featureless, the light was strong but not harsh, shadows were deep and everything from mid-tones to highlights blended into one.

"The main attraction of Stack Rocks is the sea bird colony best viewed from May to early July when thousands of Common Guillemot crowd on to the Stacks to breed together with smaller numbers of Razorbill, European Shag and Kittiwake. Red-billed Chough are regular here as are Peregrine Falcon. In the spring and summer Northern Wheatear are common on the rocky grassland of the clifftops. In the winter a walk eastwards towards St Govans may produce Merlin, possibly Hen Harrier and good flocks of European Golden Plover. Offshore the occasional Diver is possible."

The view towards Rosebush from Bwlch y Gwynt
The lighting was quite extreme and changing quickly so I shot 3 bracketed pictures (+1/-1) to make sure I got 'something'. This was without compensation. The light chnaged and I shot another 3 (as before) but nothing satisfied - lost shadows, blown highlights and the one in the middle was just flat. I think another film stock, one that is more forgiving than Delta (eg FP4+, Pan F) would have helped.
Comments/advice welcome

The morning light revealed the fog
The wind blew it all away
Stirring the water bringing rain.
Was it all so long ago?
Nothing changes
Move on

Pentre Ifan looking through to the Cairns.
Pentre Ifan is a Neolithic burial chamber (approx 5k years old). It has a 5m (16' 6")‘capstone’ appearing to be precariously balanced on three ‘uprights’.
Having produced a number of images that aimed to bring out the atmosphere of this place, and one to show the straight scanned negative (as a reference for anyone wanting to try this method) this is a straight process using LrC for brightness, contrast, local shading (sky - it was plain white) and the removal of flaws in the negative (white dots, a watermark from drying). It's intended as an illustration of Pentre Ifan (as oppossed to fine art).

When we've spent a long time in the dark looking at 'shadows' when we turn and look the other way we are more than often blinded by the light. We must be patient, give ouselves time to adjust as only then do we have any hope of seeing things as they really are. Then we will be in a better position to make progress.

A typical Sunday morning: people fish quietly on the jetty while a tanker is manouvered into position by tugs.

The scanned neg didn't need much work: remove a few flaws from the sky, alter the contrast a little to bring out the sky and emphasise the texture in the water and stonework.
I could agitate more during development to increase contrast bu then I'd risk loss of detail in the dark areas (of other frames).

rollei 6002, 80mm zeiss planar + x2 convertor, adox chs25 in perceptol 1-3 22 minutes. exp 4 seconds at f11(f 22) This shot was my first shot in explore . Revisited the neg as I was new to scanning then (2011) and original was processed with a freeware program running under linux. This is a later version ....an improvement I think :-).
