Remembrance - Poem by Waldo Williams (translated by Alan Llwyd)
One fleeting moment as the sun is setting,
One gentle moment as the night falls fast,
To bring to mind the things that are forgotten,
Now scattered in the dust of ages past.
Like white-foamed waves that break on lonely beaches,
Like the wind’s song where no one hears the wind,
They beckon us, I know, but to no purpose –
The old forgotten things of humankind.
The artistry and skills of early peoples,
Small dwelling-places and enormous halls,
Old well-told tales that have been lost for ages,
The gods that now no mortal could recall.
And little words of languages long-vanished,
Lithe words once lively on the lips of men,
And pretty in the prattle of small children,
No tongue will ever utter them again.
Oh, earth’s innumerable generations,
Their sacred dreams and fragile sanctity,
Is the heart silent that was once acquainted
With sadness and with gladness and with glee ?
Often at close of day, when I am lonely,
I long to know you all, bring all to mind;
Is there a heart or memory still to cherish
The old forgotten things of humankind?

Picture of a motorcycle trip from Munich to Vienna and on to the Lake Balaton in June 1992. The BMW R80/7 was a former police bike i got at a police auction. A reliant workhorse, but behind the full fairing it got very hot in summer.
Picture of a motorcycle trip to Vienna and on to Lake Balaton in June 1992. I just notice that the BMW R80/7, an ex-police motorcycle, was the most powerful motorcycle I ever owned. In 1981, when this motorcycle was built, 800 cc displacement was a lot, today in the age of superbikes it is rather middle class.
I've waited a long time for this picture. I expected to get a shot at it in winter, but to my surprise I got it in high summer.
Most people see it on sunny summer days. For those who live here, we see it all year round: in all its moods!
The history of the place is lost to time. At best, based on what remains, we can only guess at its purpose and everyday use. At the end of the day, it was only people trying to live out their lives as best they could: hoping for peace but in readiness for war, living this life with one eye on the next.

Walking among the financial and architectural giants of the City of London.
The famous Gherkin (aka 30 St Mary Axe) is one of the most iconic City skyscrapers, yet by now it's dwarfed by the newer ones, most of them much more boring in shape. What matters, size or character?
