KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Workers in the Payload Changeout Room, Launch Pad 39A, are on a platform in the forward cargo bay area of Space Shuttle Endeavour to search for an oxygen leak. The launch of Endeavour on mission STS-113 was postponed Nov. 10, following the completion of tanking operations, due to higher than allowable oxygen levels in the orbiter's midbody. Workers will investigate the exact location and possible cause of the leak, and effect repairs. Launch has been tentatively set for no earlier than Nov. 18, between 7 and 11 p.m. EST. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- In the payload bay of the orbiter Atlantis, STS-98 Mission Specialist Robert Curbeam works with equipment he will use in space to attach the U.S. Lab Destiny to the International Space Station. The crew is at KSC for Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test activities, which also include a simulated launch countdown. A key element in the construction of the International Space Station, Destiny is a pressurized module designed to accommodate pressurized payloads. It has a capacity of 24 rack locations. Payload racks will occupy 13 locations especially designed to support experiments. The module already has five system racks installed inside. Launch of STS-98 on its 11-day mission is scheduled for Jan. 19 at 2:11 a.m. EST. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - STS-107 Payload Commander Michael Anderson comments about the mission after the crew's arrival at KSC for pre-launch preparations. STS-107 is a mission devoted to research and will include more than 80 experiments that will study Earth and space science, advanced technology development, and astronaut health and safety. The payload on Space Shuttle Columbia includes FREESTAR (Fast Reaction Experiments Enabling Science, Technology, Applications and Research) and the SHI Research Double Module (SHI/RDM), known as SPACEHAB. Experiments on the module range from material sciences to life sciences. The primary payload on the mission is the S1 Integrated Truss Structure. The first starboard truss segment, the S1 will be attached to the Central truss segment, the S0 Truss, on the International Space Station during the mission. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- Before dawn, the payload canister with the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Leonardo inside arrives at Launch Pad 39B. The canister will be raised to the payload changeout room above (on the Rotating Service Structure) for transfer into Space Shuttle Discovery˝s payload bay. Leonardo, one of Italy˝s major contributions to the International Space Station program, is a reusable logistics carrier. It is the primary delivery system used to resupply and return Station cargo requiring a pressurized environment. Leonardo is the primary payload on mission STS-102 and will deliver up to 10 tons of laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments and supplies for outfitting the newly installed U.S. Laboratory Destiny. The John F Kennedy Space Centre is the NASA facility supporting launch complex 39. This complex was originally built for the Saturn V programme, the most powerful and largest launch rocket in history used for the Apollo launches and the moon landing. The KSC was also used for the Space Shuttle programme and continues to support and operated unmanned rocket launch facilities for commercial operations.
Mystery payload on a truck in the center square. I immediately recognized it as a rocket. But what kind? The first thing that came to mind was the Salute to Apollo on the agenda. But all the remaining Saturn V 2nd stages in existence are immovable in museums at NASA centers. Within an hour someone responded to me on Twitter pointing out that Blue Origin was also on the schedule to show off their space-flown New Shepard rocket. And that's what it was.

The 38mm diameter secondary payload bay of the rocket, which enables avionics to be fitted in a small bay alongside the top of the motor tube. The advantage of this, is it means recovery deployment avionics can be located lower on the rocket so it is easy to arm them before launch.
This secondary payload bay accommodates 2 altimeters/accelerometers and separate rechargeable batteries for each.
This shot was taken at my parent's house one night when I decided I'd put my photographic skills to the test...and test I did! I couldn't be more happy with the outcome! If you look really close, you'll notice that there's actually a ribbon-like substance wrapping around the trail going upwards. What that is is the tail of the rocket spinning around the sparks coming out of the payload. I am extremely proud of this shot!

NASA technicians spun the Global Precipitation Monitor (GPM) satellite up to just over 10 RPM in Goddard Space Flight Center’s High-Capacity Centrifuge facility March 31. At that speed, the spin exerted a lateral pressure of 2.4 G’s, or 2.4 times the force of gravity on the satellite.
Spin tests such as these are used to determine whether the forces of launch could adversely affect hardware we put into space, and to test spacecraft chassis design.
In this case, a combination of flight hardware parts and the so-called mass model were spun. The mass model simulates the final size, shape and weight distribution of the satellite and it’s component sensors, fuel, maneuvering thrusters, processing and control equipment.

Goddard’s 120-foot-diameter centrifuge can accelerate a 2.5-ton payload up to 30 Gs, well beyond the force experienced in a launch. The most intense roller-coasters in the world top out at about 5 Gs, and then only for brief moments. The 2.4 Gs experienced by GPM would be sufficient to prevent blood from flowing up into a person’s brain, inducing blackout if sustained.

The payload bay doors open with hinges in proper classic space tradition. I experimented with hinging in different directions but this was the most robust (and satisfying) outcome.
The North American B-25 Mitchell (NA-62) was an American twin-engined medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation. It was used by many Allied air forces, in every theater of World War II, as well as many other air forces after the war ended, and saw service across four decades.
The B-25 was named in honor of General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation. The B-25 is the only American military aircraft named after a specific person. By the end of its production, nearly 10,000 B-25s in numerous models had been built. These included a few limited variations, such as the US Navy's PBJ-1 patrol bomber and the Army Air Forces' F-10 photo reconnaissance aircraft.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - From the Payload Changeout Room on Launch Pad 39A, the P1 truss payload, plus the Crew and Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) cart B, are moved into the payload bay of Space Shuttle Endeavour. Scheduled to launch Nov. 10 on mission STS-113, Endeavour will make the 16th assembly flight to the International Space Station. Once delivered, the P1 truss will remain stowed until flight 12A.1 in 2003 when it will be attached to the central truss segment, S0, on the Space Station. The mission will also deliver the Expedition 6 crew to the Station and return Expedition 5 to Earth.
