KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- Technicians in the Payload Changeout Room oversee the transfer of the U.S. Lab Destiny to the orbiter˝s payload bay. The PCR is the enclosed, environmentally controlled portion of the rotating service structure that supports payload delivery at the launch pad and vertical installation in the orbiter payload bay. Destiny, a key element in the construction of the International Space Station is designed for space science experiments and already has five system racks installed inside. STS-98 is the seventh construction flight to the ISS. Launch of STS-98 is scheduled for Jan. 19 at 2:11 a.m. EST. Rather than ordering a clear 5" tube for the BT-60, I improvised one using a florescent light bulb plastic guard. It's a little bigger than the BT-60, but some electrical tape fixed up the nose cone's fit. I modified the guard's end cap using scrap balsa, CA glue, and a large safety pin to create my own balsa nose block. To improve the security of the payload section, I used 3 screws (about the size used for eyeglasses) to hold the clear payload section to the nose block.

Set to launch in 2003, the MER Mission will consist of two identical rovers designed to cover roughly 110 yards each Martian day. Each rover will carry five scientific instruments that will allow it to search for evidence of liquid water that may have been present in the planet's past. The rovers will be identical to each other, but will land at different regions of Mars. The first rover has a launch window opening May 30, and the second rover, a window opening June 25, 2003. It is possible to fit many different tools to the front of the payloader, depending on the task.

After eight months of designing, building and testing, the middle school, high school and college and university teams launched their rockets as part of NASA Student Launch on Saturday, April 6. The rockets and their payloads are designed to fly to between 4,000 and 5,500 feet in altitude before deploying recovery systems that brings them safely to the ground.

The Shuttle is carrying the S1 Integrated Truss Structure, the first starboard truss segment, to be attached to the central truss segment, S0, plus the Crew and Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) Cart A. The CETA is the first of two human-powered carts that will ride along the ISS railway, providing mobile work platforms for future spacewalking astronauts. Launch of Atlantis is scheduled for Oct. 2 with a crew of six. The 11-day mission includes three spacewalks. The Fr316-10-1300 is a 6 axis robot manufactured in stainless steel 316.

Stainless steel 316 is the material of choice in the food and pharmaceutical industries. It is far superior to stainless steel 304. This stainless steel robot is opening up food and pharmaceutical automation potential that did not exist before the introduction of this robot.

Delivering the SUPERMAX payload. This is separate capsule which will detach from the rocket immediately after the boost phase, and then re-enter the atmosphere and test a supersonic parachute system.

Visible here are Building 096 (Payload 2 -- the ANITA high bay) and Building 095 (Payload 1 -- the SPIDER high bay). The beams extending out the front allow the crane to carry payloads all the way out the main doors onto the porch.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. -- Inside the payload changeout room on the Rotating Service Structure, Launch Pad 39B, the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Leonardo is ready for the payload ground-handling mechanism (PGHM) to remove it from the canister. A worker beneath the MPLM checks equipment. Leonardo then will be transferred into Space Shuttle Discovery˝s payload bay. One of Italy˝s major contributions to the International Space Station program, Leonardo is a reusable logistics carrier. It is the primary delivery system used to resupply and return Station cargo requiring a pressurized environment. Leonardo is the primary payload on mission STS-102 and will deliver up to 10 tons of laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments and supplies for outfitting the newly installed U.S. Laboratory Destiny. STS-95 Payload Specialist John H. Glenn Jr., who also is a senator from Ohio, works with the Biological Research in Canisters (BRIC) experiment which will be flown on the mission. Glenn and other STS-95 crew members were at KSC and the adjacent SPACEHAB Payload Processing Facility in Cape Canaveral to familiarize themselves with the payloads which will fly on the mission. STS-95 will feature a variety of research payloads, including the Spartan solar-observing deployable spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope Orbital Systems Platform, the International Extreme Ultraviolet Hitchhiker, and experiments on space flight and the aging process. The only part of the camera exposed to the cold air. This design was not used in the end, and a new box was created that had no part of the camera sticking out.

Two payloaders were working in this area, scooping snow and carrying it to the Aero melter. They did this diligently the entire time we were in the airport, but there was still a pretty big pile when our plane departed.
