No time to hit the shelters!

 

Okay, so it's wanting a little, but I like it anyway :^)

The bee is a marvelous flying machine. She can carry a payload of nectar or pollen close to her own weight. Consider that even the most advanced design in aircraft can only take off with a load one-quarter of its own weight and you’ll appreciate the miracle that the honeybee can remain airborne with such a load.

Nectar is delivered to one of the indoor bees and is then passed mouth-to-mouth from bee to bee until its moisture content is reduced from about 70% to 20%. This changes the nectar into honey. Sometimes the nectar is stored at once in cells in the honeycomb before the mouth-to-mouth working because some evaporation is caused by the 32.5°C temperature inside the hive.

 

Finally, the honey is placed in storage cells and capped with beeswax in readiness for the arrival of newborn baby bees. Pollen is mixed with nectar to make “bee bread” and is fed to the larvae. A baby bee needs food rich in protein if the bee community is to flourish.

Enemy bombers streak overhead as they drop their deadly payload. Payback for not acting quickly enough to stop this deadly game of chicken between Russia, China, and the U.S.

 

It has now become a safe bet that we will meet our end by our own hand. We need bold leadership to lead us into the 22nd century. The current crop of politicians are far too old-fashioned in their thinking. Some of them are downright dangerous. We need someone with a head on their shoulders and I am not seeing it. What I see now is someone afraid of their own shadow. Either side stinks, if you ask me.

The sea is calling and I must go!

I'm really looking forward to this weekend. Larry and I are heading down to the shore to open up the house.

I'm ready!!!

RA-82042, an Antonov An-124-100 Ruslan, on short final for runway 05 at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, Ontario. It was arriving as VDA2830 (Volga-Dnepr Airlines) from Hamburg, Germany. Its payload was a new tail for C-GJWO, an Airbus A321-211 of Air Canada. The original tail was damaged in a collision with C-FIUL, an Air Canada Boeing 777-333ER, on December 27, 2019.

I was privileged to watch this little Song Sparrow taking a break from gathering brunch for the kids. If you look closely, it's holding a virtual smorgasbord of delicacies. Several times it looked like it was trying to sing too, or maybe just readjusting the payload. Birds really amaze me how they can do this - in fact, it went down to the stream edge to look for more goodies before we moved on.

On this Veterans Day weekend, let us honor and remember all of our veterans and the sacrifices that they have made.

Horseshoe Curve is an icon, a feat of engineering, a strategical component of Norfolk Southern's extensive network in the east. Elementally, it's a little more than a half circle, plain and simple--220-some odd degrees arced around a diameter spanning in excess of 1,200' with an offset of 9.25" at the midpoint of every 62' chord length. Nonsensical geometry to some, but in this gibberish of numbers resides 16+ decades of history and lore plus a dramatic spectacle for every traversal of a train around one of its several main tracks. This most celebrated location on the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad, perhaps the most famous curve in all of railroading, circumvolves trains around both ridges bordering Kittanning Run west of Altoona, easing the Pennsy's westward crossing of the Alleghenies to surmountable grades not exceeding 2%. Though the Pennsy is long gone and one of its four famous lanes has been nixed, Horseshoe Curve continues to support major tonnage, exceeding 100 MGT per calendar year, as a focal point on Norfolk Southern's Pittsburgh Line, continuing its purpose of serving as a vital artery in the conveyance of goods from the Midwest to the east. This time, its 25V's turn to take center stage, immersing the vivid valley of Kittanning Run with the sonic pounding of FDL horsepower dragging their containerized payload from Jersey to Chi-town towards the top of the mountain at Gallitzin. Once the engines pass, the throaty exhaust racket will defer to the piercing screech of metal-to-metal contact as the conical tread of each wheel loses the ability to steer through the tightly bent strips of iron and the flanges are pressed into action against the gauge face of the rail. A pitch perfect performance in mountain railroading, no doubt.

We joined a rocket launch event at the Snow Ranch, located in Central Valley of California, 2 hours east of the San Francisco Bay Area. The ranch owner graciously offers their land for monthly rocket launches, organized by LUNAR, the Livermore Unit of the National Association of Rocketry. This high power rocket called Mighty Thumper was launched from a distance, and had a perfect flight. The payload was a little parachute man, who floated down from the sky. I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) is ready for fuelling. This image shows the spacecraft leaving the Payload Preparation Facility and being transferred to the Hazardous Processing Facility, where the fuelling operations will take place. This marks a major milestone in the launch campaign. Launch is planned for mid-April.

 

Next Juice will be ready for fuelling. Usually spacecraft are first fuelled and then connected to the payload adapter, but for technical reasons the order has been swapped for Juice. After fuelling, Juice will be positioned on top of the Ariane 5, ready for launch on 13 April.

 

Juice is humankind’s next bold mission to the outer Solar System. It will make detailed observations of gas giant Jupiter and its three large ocean-bearing moons: Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. This ambitious mission will characterise these moons with a powerful suite of remote sensing, geophysical and in situ instruments to discover more about these compelling destinations as potential habitats for past or present life. Juice will monitor Jupiter’s complex magnetic, radiation and plasma environment in depth and its interplay with the moons, studying the Jupiter system as an archetype for gas giant systems across the Universe.

This week in 1992, space shuttle Columbia launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. STS-52 was the first flight of the U.S. Microgravity Payload-1, a complement of three experiments mounted on two connected Spacelab Multipurpose Experiment Support Structures in the cargo bay of Columbia. Science teams on Earth remotely commanded and monitored instruments and analyzed data from workstations at the Spacelab Mission Operation Control Facility at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center.

 

Today the Payload Operations Integration Center at Marshall serves as "science central" for the International Space Station, working 24/7, 365 days a year in support of scientific experiments on the orbiting laboratory.

This is ACW's first anti-armor weapon, it is designed with versatility and various situations in mind. the launcher it's self is made from aerospace grade alloys and polymers and has an integrated electronic sight with EMP shielding and the solenoid firing system is backed up by a standard firing pin set up.

The 84mm projectiles are preloaded canisters that attach to the back of the launcher and various payloads are available.

A big rig with an even bigger payload heads north to the mines while a loaded coal train sits waiting for its turn to head south from one of the loud-outs at Black Thunder Coal Mine.

 

It was interesting being out in rural Wyoming, far from any town and deep in mine country. The majority of the road traffic is mine related, with trucks hauling blasting agents and equipment, like this rope shovel dipper. Looking at the recent weld and paint marks, it looks like the dipper is returning from having its teeth replaced. These dippers can dig around 100 tons of earth and coal per swoop, and three scoops typically fill a gigantic dump truck. The coal is sorted from the other material and around 100 tons of coal ends up in each railroad hopper.

This week in 1992, space shuttle Columbia and STS-50 launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, carrying the first United States Microgravity Laboratory. The Spacelab long module included an Extended Duration Orbiter pallet and consisted of 31 experiments ranging from the manufacture of crystals for possible semiconductor use to the study of behavior of weightless fluids. USML-1 was a national effort to advance microgravity research in a broad number of disciplines. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center managed the Spacelab program for NASA. Today, the Payload Operations Integration Center at Marshall serves as "science central" for the International Space Station, working 24/7, 365 days a year in support of the orbiting laboratory's scientific experiments. The James Webb Space Telescope was fuelled inside the payload preparation facility at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana ahead of its launch on Ariane 5.

 

Webb’s thrusters will use this propellant to make critical course-corrections after separation from Ariane 5, to maintain its prescribed orbit about one and a half million kilometres from Earth, and to repoint the observatory and manage its momentum during operations.

 

Fuelling any satellite is a particularly delicate operation requiring setup of the equipment and connections, fuelling, and then pressurisation.

 

Webb’s propellant tanks were filled separately with 133 kg of dinitrogen tetroxide oxidiser and 168 kg hydrazine. Oxidiser improves the burn efficiency of the hydrazine fuel.

 

These propellants are extremely toxic so only a few specialists wearing Self-Contained Atmospheric Protective Ensemble, or ‘scape’ suits, remained in the dedicated fuelling hall for fuelling which took 10 days and ended on 3 December.

 

The next steps will start soon for ‘combined operations’. This is when specialists working separately to prepare Webb and Ariane 5 will come together as one team. They will place Webb atop its Ariane 5 launch vehicle and encapsulate it inside Ariane 5’s fairing.

 

Then, no longer visible, Webb, joined with its Ariane 5 launch vehicle will be transferred to the Final Assembly building for the final preparations before launch.

 

Webb will be the largest, most powerful telescope ever launched into space. As part of an international collaboration agreement, ESA is providing the telescope’s launch service using the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. Working with partners, ESA was responsible for the development and qualification of Ariane 5 adaptations for the Webb mission and for the procurement of the launch service by Arianespace.

 

Webb is an international partnership between NASA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

Since its arrival on April 29, the Psyche spacecraft has moved into the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where technicians removed it from its protective shipping container, rotated it to vertical, and have begun the final steps to prepare the spacecraft for launch. In the coming months, crews will perform a range of work including re-installing solar arrays, re-integrating a radio, testing the telecommunications system, loading propellants, and encapsulating the spacecraft inside payload fairings before it leaves the facility and moves to the launch pad.

 

The Psyche spacecraft will explore a metal-rich asteroid between Mars and Jupiter, made largely of nickel-iron metal. The mission is targeting an Aug. 1 launch atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy. After arriving in 2026, the spacecraft will spend 21 months orbiting its namesake asteroid, mapping and gathering data, potentially providing insights on how planets with a metal core, including Earth, formed.

The Artimus' purpose for the FIO, or Federation for Intergalactic Operations, was to be the most technologically advanced vessel in the Ghronis Galaxy. The Artimus will watch over the galaxy as part of the FIO's massive "peace keeping" fleet of crusiers, carriers and battleships.

This is my first real submission and participation in SHIPtember. I started this late July and finished it mid-August because of school scheduling conflicts (So technically Pre-SHIPtember). This was ridiculously fun to build, but also one my most challenging builds i've done to date. I'll most certainly be participating in the future =D.

Photographers note: When I tried to process this image with photoshop. Photoshop curves or Photoshop levels told me that the photo was overexposed and I could not get details in the highlights. So then I used Canons raw software (I never normally use that one). And that software had zero problem recovering details in the highlights. Whew! Almost sent this image to the recycle bin.
