A closer view of Bridalveil Falls from Tunnel view. Plunging 620 feet (189 meters), Bridalveil Fall is often the first waterfall you'll see when entering Yosemite Valley. In spring, it thunders; during the rest of the year, look for its characteristic light, swaying flow. A paved trail leads from the parking area to the base of this waterfall, which flows year-round.
Autumn is now well advanced here too.
This capture was taken near Maienfeld. Maienfeld is the place where the story of Heidi took place. There is also a little museum that has been furnished as a house of the time when the story was written. This trail leads to that museum, going through that beautiful forest.

The old Main Street in Granger, Texas retains its paved brick and character from the decades that have passed. Scenes for the 2010 version of True Grit by the Coen Brothers were filmed here.
This photo shows a paved square bathed in low light, likely from early morning or late afternoon. A large diagonal shadow stretches across the ground, creating a strong contrast with the illuminated areas. In front, an old multi-story building with slightly weathered walls stands at the center of the scene. Around it, other narrow houses typical of the squares and small plazas of the Serenissima (Venice) complete the setting. The overall atmosphere is calm and timeless, enhanced by the black-and-white rendering of the image.
Photographed from the Spia d'Italia hill near Solferino to the "Torre monumentale di San Martino della Battaglia" about 10 km away and 70 m high. Behind it Lake Garda and the snow-covered 2,218 m high Monte Baldo. Because of its shape, Monte Baldo always reminds me of Mount Fuji, the sacred mountain of the Japanese.
The historic Battle of Solferino in June 1859 is considered one of the bloodiest of the 19th century. Around 220,000 soldiers from the Austrian Empire faced around 150,000 from the Kingdom of Sardinia and its allies France. The young Austrian Emperor Franz Josef lost the battle. This paved the way for the unification of Italy.
Up to 30,000 soldiers were killed or wounded in the course of the battle. At least 10,000 went missing or were captured. 40,000 other soldiers became ill after the battle due to lack of food, overexertion and inadequate sanitary conditions. Most did not die in the fight but later as a result of their wounds. Wounded were left on the battlefield or left to their own devices after salvage.
Henri Dunant, a Swiss humanist, during a business trip to Solferino, witnessed the terrible conditions without any help for the thousands of wounded and dying soldiers on the battlefield. Henri Dunant organized first aid with volunteers from the population and is subsequently considered the founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Remains of the roads which king Frederik II had built in 1584. The old road was built as a privileged connecting road between the castles Frederiksborg and Kronborg and was reserved for the king, his entourage and nobles. The Kongevej was blocked off with red-painted barriers, to which one had to have a key if one had the right to travel along it. If unauthorized persons were caught using it, they were severely punished.
The unusual Campanile style bell tower of Vilnius Cathedral, divorced from its parent church by the paved Cathedral Square.
The newly paved road is Dalarövägen. Very busy this time of the year, and not my favorite as a cyclist. Only two lanes. Lots of curves. Some slow vehicles, but many more kamikaze-style motorists heading either for the Gålö peninsula or the seaside resort Dalarö.
The Gavia Pass lies in the Lombardy region and divides the province of Sondrio to the north and the province of Brescia to the south. The road over the pass (SS 300) connects Bormio to the northwest with Ponte di Legno to the south and is single track most on its southern section.

The legend states that the Lago Bianco and the nearby Lago Nero were born from the passion between Bianchina and Nerino, two young lovers who lived in those mountains, and spent their days immersed in their love.
Their happiness provoked the envy of Pinotta, who, with the intention to take revenge for their happiness, asked for help from Viz the magician.
The mage unleashed a strong snow storm on the Passo Gavia, so cold and impetuous that the two young unfortunates were transformed into two ice statues.
The Spirit of the Waters then intervened, moved by the sad fate of the young, and he tried to undo the spell, and managed to melt the two, turning them into two lakes.
Since then, legend has it that, even today, the two young people re-emerge from their ponds every night to continue their love interrupted by the storm, and people say they can hear them whisper in the night.
The mountain up right is Corno dei Tre Signori (3360m). It was given its name, which translates to "the horn of the three gentlemen", in the 19th century when the borders of the Republics of Venezia and Graubünden and the Archdiocese of Trento (Trient) met here.
Gavia Pass is at 2621 m the sixth highest paved road in Europe.

Sannenzaka, or Sannen-zaka (三年坂), is a stone-paved pedestrian road and tourist attraction in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The road is lined with traditional buildings and shops, and is often paired with the similar road, Ninenzaka.
A popular rumour is that if you happen to trip and fall on the Sannenzaka, you will die within 3 years, although no proof seems to exist for this.

A paved road goes right up to the summit of this mountain just outside of the village of Lake George, NY. The Adirondacks have two such roads [the other one goes up Whiteface, near Lake Placed]. This road makes it possible for even my Mom, who is 97, to get to the top of a mountain and see the view - in this case, Lake George. View is to the north, and shows the section of the lake known as The Narrows [where we camp].
There were beautiful photo opportunities around every corner of the Lost Lake trail at the Cooking Lake Blackfoot trail system.

There is one paved road in Barrow, two blocks long in front of the airport. The rest are gravel/sand, all pot-holes and washboard and the occasional quagmire. There is no road that connects Barrow with any other town. One road north ends in the Beaufort Sea at Point Barrow, one runs east and ends in the endless tundra and this one runs south and ends in the Chukchi Sea. There are low mounds on either side of the south road, the remains of sod and whalebone houses from the first six thousand years of the town’s history. The ocean is rising and Barrow is mere feet above sea level. There is no higher ground to retreat to. The end of the road is in sight here at the top of the world.
In ancient Jerusalem, this was the main thoroughfare.
It was paved in the second century..
It was the meeting place for residents.

Paradise Pond in Port Aransas--the only freshwater wetland on Mustang Island--has apparently been a great birding site, and has an appealing philanthropic back story. The chalkboard recorded a couple dozen species sighted there the day before, but in the short the short time we spent there we only saw this pair of redhead ducks. The whole site is about the size of a residential lot, with half a dozen parking places in the front and a circuitous path back to the boardwalk along the pond. Maybe there used to be a back fence, but now the view past the pond is a construction site. One wonders whether the pond will remain appealing to the birds after the apartment complex or mall or factory goes in.

The focus on the road was intentional. After driving a harrowing 20 miles on dirt road, paved road felt like my car was gliding (wait a minute, it was raining, did you say I probably was hydroplaning? LOL). I wanted to give the metal road its day.
Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Paved paradise and started doing land devolvement, new challenge photo at the top of Beaumont near the old Southern Pacific location of Nicklin is to attempt to hide the ever developing Shadow Creek neighborhood, as this was a failed attempt since the trees still have some more growing to do. This shot is usually done in a wider format to show off a big sweeping curve and the mountains in the distance although, with the large amount of home that create a eyesore that shot really isn't for me.
Anyway here's Union Pacific 2680 again rounding out the last mile or so in it's climb to the top of Beaumont Hill with a modest 8700 feet of train, with a Big Yellow C45AH to make for a nice leader.
