Aug 20 : Day 232

Rainy day - did some errands . . .

No Parking. I love shooting through chain link. I don't know why. The sign was an added bonus for me.

From aerials this parking structure dates to 1967 (perhaps 1966). The Four Queens casino and hotel opened in 1966 and was designed by Julius Gabriele and has been expanded periodically.

The letter K was introduced by the inhabitants of Ancient Greece some three thousand years ago, and has remained vaguely unpopular ever since. It was discovered by accident, in an early form of the game Scrabble invented by the Phoenicians, a small-tile-fashioning people with a great deal of time on their hands. The Phoenicians also enjoyed sailing boats from place to place, trading goods with the other two civilizations that existed at the time.

K's early history was a constant struggle against obsoletion. After all, the C could do everything K could do, and more. But, in a brilliant move, the K lined up endorsements from two influential groups: monks, who were in charge of writing everything at the time; and kings, who could have had all the monks murdered for no reason at all. And so, the letter K survived, and eventually became nearly indispensable. Although I should note that, apart from the words monks and kings, and mentions of the letter itself, I haven't actually used it in this caption. So it might not be too late. We can still be rid of the thing. Imagine having only 25 letters to deal with. An even quarter; two bits!

Now, before you call me crazy, I'm well aware that there are numerous words that currently require the letter K. But even there, we've had the answer for centuries: just use the C. It was good enough for the Celts. Or just drop the K altogether. Half the time it's silent anyway!

Think about it.

I stopped at this parking structure hoping to get a good city view from the top level. I thought the inside of the structure was actually more interesting than the city view.
