While we were having fun over at Phootcamp, a couple of us decided to go on a small adventure. We stumbled across the Paramount Ranch - how awesome! The place was purchased in the 1920s by Paramount and used for a great number of the old westerns. The blank backdrop has apparently been used in dozens of movies for lots of different settings, too.. most recently it was the set for "Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman" and "Charlie's Angels".. it's a lot smaller than it was back in "the day", but it's still pretty big.. and they still use it from time to time. The rest of the days, though, it is a park open to the public.

American Cinema plays a starring role in the cultural life of the United States and the world. Since before the advent of “talking pictures,” Paramount Ranch has served as a setting for hundreds of cinematic productions.

Lights! Camera! Action!…In 1927, Paramount Pictures purchased 2,700 acres of the old Rancho Las Virgenes for use as a “movie ranch.” For 25 years, a veritable who’s who of Hollywood practiced their craft at Paramount Ranch including director Cecil B. Demille and actors Bob Hope, Gary Cooper and Claudette Colbert. The diverse landscape was the real star of the show. It offered film makers the freedom to create distant locales such as colonial Massachusetts in The Maid of Salem, ancient China in The Adventures of Marco Polo, a South Seas island in Ebb Tide (1937)and numerous western locations including San Francisco in Wells Fargo. The art of illusion was mastered on the landscape.

Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch…The golden era of movie making at Paramount Ranch came to an end when changes to the studio system prompted Paramount Pictures to sell the ranch. Paramount Ranch found renewed life as a film location when William Hertz bought the southeast portion in 1953. An ardent fan of movie westerns, he built a permanent western town utilizing Paramount Pictures’ old prop storage sheds. As a result, television companies began producing westerns at the ranch such as The Cisco Kid and Dick Powell’s Zane Grey Theatre. William Hertz sold the property in 1955. The Paramount Racetrack opened a year later, and some considered it one of the most challenging in the U.S. Although it closed 18 months later, after three fatal accidents, the racetrack was featured in The Devil’s Hairpin, filmed in 1957. Most of the track still winds through the grasslands of the park.

Ride Off Into the Sunset…From 1957 to 1980, the ranch changed ownership several times, but filmmaking continued. After purchasing a portion of the original Paramount property in 1980, the National Park Service revitalized the old movie ranch. From 1992 to 1997, Paramount Ranch was used as the setting for the television show, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Whether watching filming or exploring the area, experience the drama and grandeur of the Santa Monica Mountains.

looks like an old Expressliner . Don't think they kept it that long as it was n't a Mercedes the favoured power of the fleet at the time.

Same as before, but I chaanged the color of the byline to white, and made it fade in a few seconds later and replaced the Registered mark back to its poistion.

I thought this was a rather creepy shot of the inside of the Paramount theater when it's closed.

We got last minute seats to see Modest Mouse at the Paramount Theater this past weekend. Wow.

First of all, the theater is amazing. It was built in 1927, and has ornate detail EVERYWHERE. Even the drinking fountains are made of inlaid marble sculptures. The sound quality is unbelievable because of the curves and angles built into the theater. It was definitely engineered so that one could hear the crisp details, even in the cheap seats. This phone-cam picture shows a fraction of the detail. There are several domes and chandeliers in the ceiling.

Second - it was great to finally see the mice. Isaac Brock is one intense lead singer, and he lost his voice early on. That didn't stop him from screaming it out until the very end of the show. The band's newest member, Johnny Marr (former guitarist and lyricist for the Smiths) brings a whole new level to the band. By watching his stage presence, it is clear that he's been doing this for awhile (and will hopefully continue for awhile.) Another interesting element - seeing two drummers playing simultaneously brought energy to the performance. They almost seemed to be competing with each other for intensity, but their motions were both perfectly timed. The only drawback to the show was some occasional microphone feedback. Brock would get mad at the feedback and knock the offending mic over. That happened several times. It was hilarious...

I have two recommendations. If you get a chance to see a show at the Paramount, go. It beats a sports arena ANY day, and you’ll see attention to detail that is rare these days. Second, go see Modest Mouse.

In 1927, Paramount Pictures bought 2,700 acres in West Los Angeles County. Paramount Ranch, in Agoura Hills, turned out hundreds of films even before the "talkies," and is where Cecil B Demille, Gary Cooper, Claudette Colbert, and countless others plied their craft. Of the old sets, only Western Town remains, and is part of the Nat'l Park Service.

The Pick 'n Pay building on the corner of Campground and Main roads in Claremont, is seemingly being demolished (or at least partially demolished) to make way for 61 luxury apartments, an upgraded 6000m² Pick 'n Pay supermarket and a premier Virgin Active gym.

This building's seen quite a few changes in its lifetime, first starting out as a hospital, then being changed to an office-block (with a Pick 'n Pay supermarket on the ground floor) and now finally being transformed into an apartment-block.

Apartments start off at R975 000, with the largest apartment - a spacious 3 bedroomed, 3 bathroomed unit - asking a staggering R4 million! Transfer in early 2008.

There go my plans of being able to go home, less than 100m from work! :)

1956 Paramount 1 1/2 litre Roadster.

Paramount Cars (1950 - 1956) were initially manufactured in Swadlincote (Derbyshire), moving shortly after to Melbourne (again in Derbyshire) and then (1953) to Leighton Buzzard.

The Paramount had an aluminium over wood frame body with BMW like grille and was mounted on a separate tubular steel chassis with front transverse and rear semi elliptical leaf springs. It was originally intended to have Alvis engine and suspension but to reduce cost the production versions used Ford 10 components.

In 1953, the company was bought by Camden Motors and production moved to Leighton Buzzard and the Ford Consul 1,508 cc engine was an option in a longer chassis as also was a Wade or Shorrocks supercharger. The price was now an uncompetitive £1009 and production ceased in 1956 after about 70 cars had been made.

After growing up with Universal Studios, I was jaded to backlots until I visited Paramount Pictures. This lot is small, but stunning in its detail. The buildings are unique and look real from many angles. The architecture is not specific and quite varied, but those details just slayed me. Even the cracks in the sidewalk were planned by an art director. I stayed far too long, but adored the Paramount Pictures backlot.

Grand Lobby, Paramount Theatre, Oakland

This is the original Paramount Studios entrance and the one that most people think about (although, many people mistake the Melrose Gate as the classic gate). The paseo that passes in front of this gate used to be an actual street (Marathon Street), but, since then, Paramount Studios has taken over the block up to Melrose.
