Thomas DiStefano, coordinator of multimedia design, receives the 2010 Dean's Award for Staff Excellence from Dean Susan Salmond.
Excerpt from Dr. Salmond's presentation:
Thomas DiStefano’s official title is Coordinator of Multimedia Design. However, that title doesn’t begin to explain the value he has brought to the School of Nursing. Since he joined our staff in 2007, the School has acquired a consistent visual identity, an exciting “new look.” Walk the hallways at the School of Nursing and you’ll see his handiwork in the posters, flyers and course schedules that adorn the walls in our Newark and Stratford facilities. His posters have made such a hit that he has a “side job” making posters for the UMDNJ President’s Office.
Visit the School of Nursing website and you’ll see Thomas’ new page designs, forms, navigations systems and frequent updates that keep our website fresh. He is helped us to implement online information session chats, surveys and our Convocation RSVPs have gone paperless. Enroll in one of his classes and Thomas can teach you to use cutting edge internet technology to help you do your work more efficiently. Our faculty members now have the best looking research posters at conferences and our well-designed PowerPoint presentations set a positive image for the School.
Thomas accomplishes all of this in his quiet, easy going manner. He listens to what’s needed and then quickly gets it done. But he doesn’t just get it done, he gets it done with excellence. He is always looking for ways to do things better in support of the School of Nursing—whether or not it’s in his job description. Here’s an example that someone whispered in my ear. Last Thursday a co-worker (Lynn) spotted Thomas with a spray bottle of Lysol in hand wiping down the door to the 11th floor stairwell. [Did I tell you Thomas always takes the stairs?] When the co-worker asked Thomas what he was doing, he answered “I always wanted to see that door cleaned but I didn’t have any Lysol. Now I have the Lysol, so I’m cleaning it.”
Thomas DiStefano, thank you for all that you do on behalf of the School of Nursing.

Maybe it's a generational thing, but when I edit, I need to see the words on paper while I'm holding a pencil in my hand. So I print out everything. Paperless office? HA!
We went up to Grandma's in Chambersburg on Christmas Eve for a little visit, then back to the UU church in Hagerstown for their Christmas Eve service. Darren and I organized our gift-giving efforts, and then he got everyone to bed, so I could summon my inner-elf and put out some goodies for the kids before going to bed myself. This year, we decided to go "paperless" and I "wrapped" everybody's gifts in blankets, towels, grocery bags, etc. Very functional and equally suspenseful. We also gave the kids some fun, but practical things this year, including hockey gear, musical equipment, and Zofia's big gift of new bungees on my old Bellicon rebounder. I made the kids vegan pizza for dinner, and Darren and I had some raw "wraps" and smoothies. Happy and relaxing holiday vibes!

It's me (Drew) at my desk sporting a stupid grin reserved only for the rare few. I've got 3 iMacs in my studio. As you can see I design and still draw all my work before hitting the mouse. I'm working here on a logo for Mary Lou Retton ( the gymnast). The little logo over the Apple icon I designed for Kelly Slater (the surfer). nicelogo.com

Here you see the table set up as a workspace (I'm a web developer). I use a comfortable dining room chair that I grab from a few feet away in the next room. The table drawer is actually a keyboard tray, and I use a cordless keyboard and mouse. I'm able to grab some paper from the storage on the right, but otherwise I'm paperless.
I love that I can enjoy the view while I'm working!
my dear pen! for all those who love writing....
While going paperless seems to be a great idea for the sake of the environment... nothing can replace the good old pen and paper combination. we love you
June 4, 155/365 (1982/2192)- Due to budget cuts at school I can't afford to print much of anything; so all student work is submitted digitally, we view it digitally, and I record grades straight to digital. I guess this does qualify me as a tree-hugger, but I certainly do inconvenience a lot of electrons!
Four classes down, three more to go tomorrow!

Doha Bank, one of the leading banks in Qatar, has won the “prestigious” Golden Peacock Global Award 2012 for corporate social responsibility (CSR) for the third consecutive year.
Doha Bank Group chief executive officer R Seetharaman received the award from Juma al-Majed, chairman of Dubai Economic Council at a ceremony of the 7th International Conference on Social Responsibility attended by distinguished CSR leaders, bankers, academics, environmentalists, economists, legislators and policy makers at Dubai Festival City InterCon Hotel, Dubai on Thursday.
Seetharaman said: “This truly is a milestone achievement in our efforts towards setting the example as a responsible corporate. We at Doha Bank believe that it is not just about money and that we have to give in return to the stakeholders who place their trust on us.
“This achievement would not have been possible without the unstinted support of the Qatar Government, the principle regulatory bodies, our visionary board, business community, worthy investors, loyal clientele, society at large, and promising employees – this award is dedicated to you”.
He said: “The bank has been completely transformed into a dynamic entity with strong values and customer-centric approach and has sustained the same over a period of time. This award symbolises Doha Bank’s affinity towards public welfare and social consciousness and the manner at which it has sustained its position as one of the pioneers of ‘green banking’ in Qatar. This award is recognition of bank’s customer driven initiatives like educational and health benefits and involvement in social cause, which has seen it introduce new and innovative products even during tough market conditions resulting from the global financial meltdown. Doha Bank’s functional model with economic, environmental, and social initiatives, contributing towards the welfare of the public has always been a welcome approach towards a bright future.”
Earlier at the global conference, Seetharaman spoke on “corporate social responsibility – a bridge between business and society”.
He said: “Corporate social responsibility should voluntarily contribute towards sustainable development in three areas namely people, planet and profit. People represent the social development, planet represents contribution towards environment development and profit represents economic growth, which has to be sustained to finance environmental and community responsibilities.
“There is an inevitable link between business and society. A healthy business depends on a healthy community to create demand for products and provide supportive business environment. Likewise, a healthy society depends on competitive companies that can create jobs, support high wages, build wealth, buy local goods and pay taxes. Organisations need to have shared values, which combine economic and social objectives and thereby also enhance its
competitiveness.”
Highlighting the importance of CSR for corporates, Seetharaman said, “Corporate social responsibility activities have the potential to create several distinct forms of value for customers. It is the customer perception of this value that mediates the relationship between CSR activities and subsequent financial performance. CSR leads to outcomes such as increased customer loyalty, willingness to pay premium prices, and lower reputational risks in times of crisis. Improving customer satisfaction, creating products that are easy to use and securing quality are some of the CSR measures which benefits the customers. Today, corporates must help to build the social and environmentally acceptable standards necessary to support their economies.
“Organisations should undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility. Organisations should encourage the development and diffusion of environmental friendly technologies. Organisations should support precautionary approach to environmental challenges. Doha Bank maintains a well defined environmental policy with the principles of “reduce, reuse & re-cycle”.
“Initiatives to support Qatar’s “Go green Qatar”, seminars on global warming conducted in Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Kuwait, Turkey, Tokyo, Nagoya, Singapore, Chennai and Mumbai, dedicated ‘Green Bank’ website, environment friendly and bio-degradable credit cards, paperless banking, Green Bank Task Force Committee, annual marathon – Al Dana Green Fun Run and public awareness campaigns through ATMs, all underline the bank’s environmental
sustainability.
“Doha Bank has reached out to the larger community through its long standing Corporate Social Responsibility activities where it is committed to raise awareness on environmental issues and focus on the economic challenges facing the world and the region.”

Hungry and wet, after 10 hours on the rocky waves, we land in Nuussuaq. It's after midnight. Where to go and what do to? There is not a single person on the shore. And then out of nowhere appears a man. We don’t know him, but upon seeing our misery he invited us to his house. Now we have shelter, food and a hot tea which we now need the most. This man happens to be Nikolai Kristensen He is a local artist who lives with his young grandson in a house that has so many treasures that one could spend days observing them and still not see them all.
Thousands of small beads were laying around - and he was already imagining a new life for them.
When you look at his room, you see all these kittle bids spread chaotically around the floor, tables, window-shelves and all other flat and not-so-flat surfaces. They look like dust. As meaningless and boring as dust can be.
But then something happens. Then - all of a sudden - they come together, one by one. Thousands, they come into one and miraculoulys turn into a masterpiece that one can not understand or analyze.
And neither plan. Nikolai Kristensen does not make plans, designs, or outlines. He makes his dresses out of cheap little beads and out of pure love of his heart. He can not predict what will happen with these little beads next morning: he just touches them and miracle happens.
We stayed with him till midday. And then it was time to go. We left Nikolai's home and boated to Devil's Thumb - Kullorsuaq.
All day long I was thinking about Nikolai and his little plastic beads.
And then I thought: isn't is the same with Expedition Avannaa? All these small moments of life that we witness along our way are probably not really exciting, nor unusual. One can even say that they are boring, routine and to no extent glamourous. But then of course, something happens, and all of a sudden all these individual moments – as boring as dust – suddenly get woven into a cosmic fabric of our "paperless" Expedition.

Recently, the Bank of Canada released the new polymer-based $20 dollar bills. In recent years, sophisticated counterfeiters forced Canada to turn away from paper-based notes.
This is my desktop (sometimes I work in my dining table). I’m working in a data-mining assignment, and I’m trying to program something to solve the problem.
The main code is in the screen of my laptop and I’m using the second screen to check extra information from different sources and to maintain a visible copy of the slides of the course. I’m also using the “multiple desktop” feature of my computer to maintain accessible more sources of information. When I have to program something, I usually keep a notebook and a pen close to me, to help me to keep in order my ideas.
While I’m not working in a fully paperless desktop, this term I decided to buy more eBooks instead of paper books, because I have to come back to my country eventually, and I’m planning to take all the books with me. In my old laptop the reading experience was uncomfortable, because of the sound of the fans, but in my new laptop and in my tablet, the experience has been really good: I do not miss reading paper books at all.
Day 154/365
Sometimes I just can't bring myself to do things in regular intervals. Like read my mail for example.
Today I went through the stack that had piled up during and after the India vacation from which I had returned already 4 weeks ago. I had opened only one of the envelopes yet, the padded one that stuck out because of a beautiful handwriting I didn't know, which contained that lovely gift I have already shown you earlier. All the other stuff - the bills, the bank statements, the phone companies records, the magazines - all of this had just rested on a kitchen chair for weeks.
When I had opened all of them, sorted them, and was ready to throw away the stuff I wouldn't need or want anymore (like envelopes, old magazines, advertising mail and the lot) I noticed that the paper basket was broken.
Well, it's not exactly that this is a novum. I guess it had been that way for about two months now - an ugly gap to one of its corners where the glue had given in to the pressure from within (when it's full, I tend to press its contents down to make some more space inside rather than take it to the paper waste container... and I keep doing that until really NOTHING else will fit in). The gap wasn't very functional, since all the paper kept falling through it.
So I took the wood glue from the tool cabinet, fixed it and let it dry on the kitchen table. An act that took less than 5 minutes, but which I had been procrastinating for weeks.
This shot is taken from within it. The tiger duck was just standing next to it, together with my cameras, lenses, notebook and the stack of mail that didn't get thrown away in the process.
Now I only need to file those documents properly, and then I'm done.
Until the next stack will pile up.
I love the idea of a paperless life. Alternatively, I love the idea of secretaries.
How about some sexy black (and edible) lingerie for a passionate encounter?! These tasty temptations feature what I think makes the most decadent pairing: chocolate and raspberry. These hearts are paperless to show off the most sweetness available. Oooh la la!
(I do not have a blog but I have a sugar art portfolio at community.webshots.com/user/rwarren69 .)
Following closely on the heels of "Will we ever truly become... a "Paperless" Society?" I think it's amazing the beauty we can find, no matter where we happen to be looking... or even IF we aren't looking. I suppose photography has done some things for me - for I have certainly done nothing for it (which was one reason that for many years I had put down the camera, relationally, it had become my master, rather than vice versa, something that drove me, rather than I it, and I WILL NOT be a slave to anything or man, save Christ). One of the things that photography has done for me, is to enable me to "see." To "see" things in a new light, in a different way, to appreciate beauty... even in the wrinkled face of an old woman or man, of a dying child, of grief stricken parents, of heart broken friends and family. It is not a sight of the eyes perhaps, as a "sight" of the heart. It is, I suppose, an appreciation of things unseen. Those things are relationships, and love. And yet, I wonder if I truly love with a love that is worthy of being called love, for I am - like this bathtub - in need of cleaning! Enjoy!
The future is Psion! Onward to the paperless office. Or so I thought in the 1990s.
My 1997-99 diaries (and some data but can't remember what!) are locked inside this "state-of-the-art" organiser. Found in my loft today but not opened, or capable of being opened, since late 1999.
