As a modern business traveller (!) one tries to keep up with modern travelling practices, such as shown here: the electronic boarding pass.

I have to admit smirking on a previous trip when a business traveller was fumbling around for his paperless boarding pass... and I stuck with the good old reliable paper.

The iPhone British Airways app is actually quite good. In the past it has told me the flight was delayed before I left the hotel.

US Naval Hospital Ship Mercy: Conference

The entire medical record keeping system on the ship Mercy is electronic, and is connected in real time via satellite link to records at the Veterans Administration system. I didn't see any filing cabinets anywhere! Paperless!

Patient images and history can be shared, and diagnostic opinions can be discussed around the world, in real time.

It makes me wonder why some people and politicians are opposed to the proposed US health care reforms, when their arguments state that the US Government is incompetent and they don't want the government to be involved in our health care. From what I saw, and have heard about the hospitals in the SF Bay Area (my wife is in the health care industry), this system is far advanced over what private industry has developed for the "common man". I think the government SHOULD be involved with our health care. We have lessons to learn and ideas to implement; just waiting for the will.

California Drivers Can Go Paperless

Good news for drivers looking to make use of their handheld device, since it is now illegal in California to talk or text on it. A new state law makes them able to use it to show proof of insurance in the event of a traffic stop or collision.

Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law Assembly Bill 1708, which makes California the seventh state in the country that allows motorists to show they have auto insurance via their smartphone or other mobile electronic device. Drivers can still opt to hand over a piece of paper from their glove box instead, the Association of California Insurance Companies said in a news release.

The decisions of whether or not allow paperless proof of insurance was a sticky situation for legislators. On the one hand they wanted to make the process simpler for drivers and insurance companies, not to mention an attempt to decrease the costs involved in printing insurance cards, on the other hand they have been battling to convince drivers not to use handheld devices while they drive. They did not want to be seen as being wishy-washy in the middle of an all-out war against distracted driving. So far the news is being hailed as a step forward by insurance companies, drivers and even safety advocates, all of whom say that if a driver does need to show proof of insurance they will do so while their vehicle is safely parked, meaning there is no danger of anyone getting confused about the intention of the law. So far, so good.

Not the fun photo I was hoping for while I was in Nashville yesterday...

My laptop bag sitting on the floor next to me while waiting for my delayed flight at Nashville International. Trying to get home before getting stuck in the ice there. I finally made it into Charlotte around 8pm.

My thoughts go out to all those folks trying to get to (or out of) the Northeast. What a nightmare. The departure boards looked like something out of a freaky movie...all the flights were labeled with red "Cancelled" or "Delayed" statuses. When I got to Charlotte, the sidewalk where the shuttles pick up was packed with people the entire length of the terminal and at least 6-8 people deep...it was insane. But once out on the road, it was deserted.

My review of this bag can be found here: amcoop.wordpress.com/2010/02/13/bag-review-clark-mayfield...

I remember a lot of talk about the paperless office, but paper remains a very useful tool, as are paper weights.

Our Daily Challenge: TOOLS

We are really becoming a paperless society. Daily home delivery of the Detroit Free Press has been reduced to 3 days a week as more and more people are turning to the internet for their news. I was pleasantly surprised to find this old newspaper announcing the Detroit Tigers as the champions of the 1968 World Series. Ironically this newspaper is from October 11, 1968 -- 41 years ago to the day.

Introducing Kindle™

Three years ago, we set out to design and build an entirely new class of device—a convenient, portable reading device with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, and newspapers. The result is Amazon Kindle.

We designed Kindle to provide an exceptional reading experience. Thanks to electronic paper, a revolutionary new display technology, reading Kindle's screen is as sharp and natural as reading ink on paper—and nothing like the strain and glare of a computer screen. Kindle is also easy on the fingertips. It never becomes hot and is designed for ambidextrous use so both "lefties" and "righties" can read comfortably at any angle for long periods of time.

We wanted Kindle to be completely mobile and simple to use for everyone, so we made it wireless. No PC and no syncing needed. Using the same 3G network as advanced cell phones, we deliver your content using our own wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet. Unlike WiFi, you'll never need to locate a hotspot. There are no confusing service plans, yearly contracts, or monthly wireless bills—we take care of the hassles so you can just read.

With Whispernet, you can be almost anywhere, think of a book, and get it in one minute. Similarly, your content automatically comes to you. Newspaper subscriptions are delivered wirelessly each morning. Most magazines arrive before they hit newsstands. Haven't read the book for tomorrow night's book club? Get it in a minute. Finished your book in the airport? Download the sequel while you board the plane. Whether you're in the mood for something serious or hilarious, lighthearted or studious, Kindle delivers your spontaneous reading choices on demand.

And because we know you can't judge a book by its cover, Kindle lets you download and read the beginning of books for free. This way, you can try it out—if you like it, simply buy and download with 1-Click, right from your Kindle, and continue reading. Want to try a newspaper as well? All newspaper subscriptions start with a risk-free two-week trial.

Kindle's paperback size and expandable memory let you travel light with your library. With the freedom to download what you want, when you want, we hope you'll never again find yourself stuck without a great read.

We're very proud to introduce Amazon Kindle and we hope you like it as much as we do.

I originally signed up for a credit card with Providian Bank. They were great, and had an awesome website with lots of great features like showing a graph of your credit rating over time, at no extra charge.

Then Providian was bought by Washington Mutual (WaMu).

WaMu's site was worse than Providian's, but at least had some of the features.

Then WaMu was absorbed by Chase, who has a terrible website, and are almost completely lacking in features.

Paperless financial automation is now available for small to midsized firms with Metafile's MetaViewer.

As I said before, we met Nikolai Kristensen by pure chance. Caught by a heavy storm, at 1 am we made an emergency landing in Nuussuaq - a remote settlement in Upernavik District. The shore was empty. We were cold, wet and hungry. Where to go and what to do?

And then all of a sudden a lonely man appeared on the hill.

He waved to us and we talked.

"Come on, - he said. - Come on into my house. You can't stay here."

We followed him up the hill.

He opened the door. We entered one by one. And then we froze speechless.

We were in the most exquisite crafts museum one could imagine.

Hand-made carpets, lamps, paintings, sleds, boots, dresses, vests were taking all the space in his modest living-room.

His young grandson was sleeping on the couch amidst all these treasures.

We talked till 3 am. He served us dinner and a lot of hot tea.

When we woke up in the morning we found Nikolai already at work. He was inspired.

Thousands of small beads were laying around - and he was already imagining a new life for them.

When you look at his room, you see all these kittle bids spread chaotically around the floor, tables, window-shelves and all other flat and not-so-flat surfaces. They look like dust. As meaningless and boring as dust can be.

But then something happens. Then - all of a sudden - they come together, one by one. Thousands, they come into one and miraculoulys turn into a masterpiece that one can not understand or analyze.

And neither plan. Nikolai Kristensen does not make plans, designs, or outlines. He makes his dresses out of cheap little beads and out of pure love of his heart. He can not predict what will happen with these little beads next morning: he just touches them and miracle happens.

We stayed with him till midday. And then it was time to go. We left Nikolai's home and boated to Devil's Thumb - Kullorsuaq.

All day long I was thinking about Nikolai and his little plastic beads.

And then I thought: isn't is the same with Expedition Avannaa? All these small moments of life that we witness along our way are probably not really exciting, nor unusual. One can even say that they are boring, routine and to no extent glamourous. But then of course, something happens, and all of a sudden all these individual moments – as boring as dust – suddenly get woven into a cosmic fabric of our "paperless" Expedition.

O Boeing 787 Dreamliner é o mais recente avião comercial da construtora aeronáutica Boeing. Foi apresentado à imprensa, em Everett, WA, em 8 de julho de 2007, doze anos depois do 777. O primeiro será entregue a ANA - All Nippon Airways, que comprou 50 unidades.

Modelo gráfico do 787.

Our idea for the Club of the Future is to reformat the way Board and Committee meetings are run in the club industry. With smartphones, tablets, and apps becoming more popular lately we think it would be a good idea to integrate everything you would need for a meeting into an app that would be easy and convenient to use on computers, smartphones and tablets. There are many different platforms that can be used to conduct virtual meetings; google hangout, virtual boardroom, skype, and Wiggio. The cost to develop this idea would depend on the platform used. There are many different benefits when switching over to virtual/paperless meetings; saving time and travel costs, less restrictions with time and location, notes from meetings can be easily accessed from anywhere so progress can be tracked, and virtual meetings can also improve the quality of life by allowing members to work from home if the choose to or need to. Becoming paperless is also economical and easy to share. In person meetings will still be held every quarter or do to an important event. This idea benefits the board by saving paper, saving time, and assisting the boards and committees for Clubs.

We went up to Grandma's in Chambersburg on Christmas Eve for a little visit, then back to the UU church in Hagerstown for their Christmas Eve service. Darren and I organized our gift-giving efforts, and then he got everyone to bed, so I could summon my inner-elf and put out some goodies for the kids before going to bed myself. This year, we decided to go "paperless" and I "wrapped" everybody's gifts in blankets, towels, grocery bags, etc. Very functional and equally suspenseful. We also gave the kids some fun, but practical things this year, including hockey gear, musical equipment, and Zofia's big gift of new bungees on my old Bellicon rebounder. I made the kids vegan pizza for dinner, and Darren and I had some raw "wraps" and smoothies. Happy and relaxing holiday vibes!

Week Forty Four:

Day Thirty One:

Bloody paperwork. Yes yes yes scary time of year, I should be happy and prancing and dancing and terrorising the populace but have you any idea how much paperwork is involved in this sort of thing? This is like tax season for those of the hellish persuasion and you've no idea how much Inland Revenue take for something that you wouldn't even miss if you didn't have it. Well not while you're living anyway.

It's been all go go go. It's the one time of year I can venture out and get all the busy work done but no all I get is stares and gasps of "excellent, spot on". The lady in the cafe even asked if how me horns were stuck on. I just leaned in and said "You know how people say you're not supposed to pick your spots" she wished she'd never asked after that. Ah but she did give me a tasty bacon roll. It had to be bacon, it's the thing that tastes closest to babies.

Finishing off the day with picking up the sibling's spawn was interesting. I mean do I look like the Gruffallo? No little girl I'm not a big furry, horned creatu....ooh um well I'll give her that one.

But now it's down to the paperwork. What's that? Paperless? Have you ever tried to sign a iPad or a monitor in blood? It just doesn't work. It smears all over the place and takes ages to clean. No it has to be paper. Yes I do follow the Data Protection guidelines. I have been doing this a millenia of two.

Now I'm off to the Christian bookshop to change the endings in all their books.

MedicTalk DentForms is a paperless software that will bridge off a dental office's practice management system. DentForms incorporates online patient forms and digital signatures.

Thomas DiStefano, coordinator of multimedia design, receives the 2010 Dean's Award for Staff Excellence from Dean Susan Salmond.

Excerpt from Dr. Salmond's presentation:

Thomas DiStefano’s official title is Coordinator of Multimedia Design. However, that title doesn’t begin to explain the value he has brought to the School of Nursing. Since he joined our staff in 2007, the School has acquired a consistent visual identity, an exciting “new look.” Walk the hallways at the School of Nursing and you’ll see his handiwork in the posters, flyers and course schedules that adorn the walls in our Newark and Stratford facilities. His posters have made such a hit that he has a “side job” making posters for the UMDNJ President’s Office.

Visit the School of Nursing website and you’ll see Thomas’ new page designs, forms, navigations systems and frequent updates that keep our website fresh. He is helped us to implement online information session chats, surveys and our Convocation RSVPs have gone paperless. Enroll in one of his classes and Thomas can teach you to use cutting edge internet technology to help you do your work more efficiently. Our faculty members now have the best looking research posters at conferences and our well-designed PowerPoint presentations set a positive image for the School.

Thomas accomplishes all of this in his quiet, easy going manner. He listens to what’s needed and then quickly gets it done. But he doesn’t just get it done, he gets it done with excellence. He is always looking for ways to do things better in support of the School of Nursing—whether or not it’s in his job description. Here’s an example that someone whispered in my ear. Last Thursday a co-worker (Lynn) spotted Thomas with a spray bottle of Lysol in hand wiping down the door to the 11th floor stairwell. [Did I tell you Thomas always takes the stairs?] When the co-worker asked Thomas what he was doing, he answered “I always wanted to see that door cleaned but I didn’t have any Lysol. Now I have the Lysol, so I’m cleaning it.”

Thomas DiStefano, thank you for all that you do on behalf of the School of Nursing.

This advertisement employs a good way how to allow customer quickly compare four products. However, the way it uses symbols representing 'availability' of a feature is confusing. One can get the impression that the most expensive device does not contain any of the features.
