The 10 foot wide desk I built for my home office. It's made from a couple of cabinets my dad once had in his home office with a 10 foot wide section of kitchen countertop mounted on top (with 1/2" plywood underneath the countertop for support). A bookshelf, also from my dad's old home office completes it. One cabinet houses my mini wiring closet, with my DSL modem, 24 port gigabit managed switch and the Mac Mini that powers my smart home systems. The other currently houses my shredder and will eventually house the scanner I'm going to use to help achieve a paperless office.
Some years ago, in 1981, when I first began using computers for design engineering work we were told that the future would be the so-called Paperless Office. Today, in this room are three computers, an A0-size drawing board, about a thousand books — and nearly half a forest's worth of paper. This room hasn't quite gone paperless yet.

Normally, when setting The Boy up with paints, I let him go at it with packing paper, uncrumpled after weeks, months, protecting glassware from shattering, and now stacked in the craft closet. Today, I had a desk drawer unruly with unfiled bills from the last six months. Next step, I'm told, is to fold the sheets into paper aircraft. I might have to cancel paperless billing if we keep this up.

This installation entitled “Unlimited Talk and Text” challenges us to face the reality of the times we live in. A 10ft (3m) paper mâchéd tree sculpted with pages from found phone books is reincarnated again to its natural posture reminding us of the past we once lived in while at the same time reminding us of the future that is ahead of us. The phonebook is no longer a necessity as technology advances us into a paperless society putting this species of ‘staple household items’ on the endangered list while the process of making these books also leads to putting species of trees, forests, habitats etc. on the endangered list as well.

For Sale: An Aprilia RSV Mille. 2002 Model.
The good, the bad and the lovely.
The good:
The major service was performed by the Aprilia agents in Cape Town. You can contact them to confirm this, and I have paperwork for it. The service included pretty much everything from fork oil to opening the motor, checking the shims, etc. The shims were perfect by the way. The dealer told me the motor was in near perfect condition and that usually there is alway one shim to replace. They did however replace a engine cover bolt, which i'm sure THEY stripped. But anyway...
The motor and electrics, etc, are in perfect condition. I've just had a tail light bulb go, so this would be my first electrical issue since I've owned the bike. I owned a suzuki prior to this and I had issues every week, so this bike is a major step up in my opinion.
The bad:
The bike has been dropped. The damage is cosmetic and most of it is confined to the left hand side plastics. It should be an easy repair. I shopped around for a complete makeover and came back with an estimate of R6500 to get the bike to look exactly what it looked like when it left the showroom floor. This included a complete respray (3 tone silver) of the bike as well as replacing plastics and a complete new (imported directly from the UK) sticker kit. I recon if you decided to just replace/repair the existing parts and get the stickers made locally, you're probably looking an amount thats considerably less. Nix graphics in Table View/Parklands does some real nice work with sticker kits and I'll definately recommend him. He's made a full set of custom stickers for my MX bike from a photo I got off the internet. I'm pretty sure he could do the same for you if you wanted a Colin Edwards or Haga replica sticker kit.
The lovely:
Packed with loads of torque it allows for an easy ride, some like to say lazy, but either way changing gears take effort. So Chapman's peak can be done entirely in 3rd gear (except for one corner) if you like and you can enjoy the view while your mates drop gears into the corners. It may not be the factory model, but it can hold it's own against tough competition. I regularly ride with a mate of mine who own's a ducati 998SP (limited edition Ohlin's suspension and tuned motor) and he only just outpaces me in the twisties. The fact of the matter is that he's probably a better rider... if only just :-)
Mountain passes are a blast. The sound of a V-Twin echo'ing off the mountains definately sounds sooooo much sweeter than a 4 stroke rider murdering his bike down a straight. In the twisties it sticks in a corner and exits beautifully. It has an agressive riding position, and it's heavily front wheel based, which gives it the great cornering it's renown for.
Just some info:
Everything on the bike is original, including the tail pipe. This bike would suit pretty much anyone, but is probably not meant for someone who's 6 foot 4 or taller) The reason for this is that it has a shorter wheel base, giving it almost 600cc cornering abilities and feel, and this requires a taller persons to duck down lower, else feel some strain on the upper back. I don't let other people ride her. I have never taken her on the track. I replace anything that is faulty with genuine Aprilia parts. I can fix her up if you want, but then it will be R6500 more than the agreed price. Aprilia Cape Town will put it on their showroom floor for R75000 after I do the repairs. But since I don't want to invest more money or go through all the trouble as I travel alot, you can make me a offer in the R60 000 range. It will be sold to the highest offer.
Why would I sell her?
It's not the kind of bike I would want to get rid of and I don't ride her to the max, but the Mrs. promised me that I can get a new bike,....... (realising her mistake)...."On condition that I sell this one of course."
I've tried to provide as much information and be as honest as possible. If I haven't answered any questions, please drop me a line on 084 3055066. I'm available pretty much all day until 10pm. If I don't answer, please don't feel offended, but I have another phone on which my work revolves around, so I may only get back to you a bit later in the day.
After we agreed to a price, I'll put on a new set of Mitchelin Pilot Powers front and back and it also comes with a pillion seat as spare. It also has a set of crash bobins and a set of clips on the rear which allows for easy tire changing when using a race stand. (Race stand not included, sorry.) I have an paperless PDF Manual on CD which is great for finding out things like setting when the RPM rev limiter light should come on and that sort of thing.
Thank you for viewing.

The late afternoon sun created a shadowy photogramme, using protective window bars, indoor plants and the leafy branches of the trees. The shadows are projected onto a white door and wall, as well as a bit of brown carpet... I was merely the instrument of its capture!
Although the photogramme was invented in the 19th century at the birth of photography, it was rediscovered in the early 20th century by photographers such as Man Ray, who called them 'Rayographs,' and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, both of whom made them a staple of the avant-garde and surrealist movements. And they continue to be made today! (Click on each numbered photogramme to see current work by photography students in Switzerland.)
But, like the shadows in Plato's Cave, the source of the shapes loses importance and the shadows can be appreciated in their shadowy essence. The real world is left behind and we enter the realm of the surreal (sur-réel), moving out of and above reality per se into a space dominated by imagination and dreams, which have their own un/sub/conscious "realities"....

Doha Bank won the prestigious Golden Peacock Global Award for Sustainability 2013. Dr. R. Seetharaman, Group CEO, Doha Bank, received the award from the Rt. Hon. Baroness Verma, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change, UK at the 13th International Conference on Corporate Governance & Sustainability. The event was hosted by the Institute of Directors, India as part of London Global Convention 2013.
On receiving the award, Dr. R. Seetharaman said, “This is a milestone achievement in our efforts towards sustainability. It gives us a boost to strengthen our efforts towards sustainable development. Doha Bank will continue to work on sustainable development of its stakeholders.”
Dr. R. Seetharaman also participated in the panel discussion “Rejuvenating economy through Sustainability”. Speaking at the Panel discussion. Dr. R. Seetharaman gave insights to scale up green growth solutions. He said, “Green Banking and Climate Change Financing are the key initiatives to promote green economies. Doha Bank advocates and practices Green Banking, which is one of the core business philosophies that will support sustainability into the future. Banks should align lending activities with environmental cause. They should develop environmental and Social Risk Management and expand the scope of risk management to include Social and environment risk also. Public Private Partnership (PPP) models can potentially address the challenges posed by climate change and there should be policies to attract private sector investment.
“Doha Bank maintains a well-defined Environmental Policy with the principles of ‘Reduce, Reuse & Re-cycle’. Initiatives to Support the State of Qatar’s ‘Go Green Qatar’, Seminars on Global warming conducted in Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Kuwait, Turkey, Tokyo, Nagoya, Singapore, Chennai & Mumbai, Dedicated Green Bank Website, Environment Friendly & Bio Degradable Credit Cards, Paperless Banking, Green Bank Task Force Committee, Annual Marathon – Al Dana Green Fun Run & Public Awareness Campaigns through ATMs, all underlines the Environmental Sustainability of DOHA Bank. Doha Bank has reached out to the larger community through its long standing Corporate Social Responsibility activities where it is committed to raise awareness on environmental issues and focus on the economic challenges facing the world and the region.
“At the Rio+20 summit held in June 2012 the global leaders have agreed for sustainable development at all levels, integrating economic, social and environmental aspects. They will also make efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Climate change has become a threat for global food supply and we cannot look at food security, poverty and climate change separately. The 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) to the UNFCCC was held in Doha, Qatar. The conference had come out with the “Doha Climate Gateway” which pushed forward the solutions to climate change.
“Social sustainability actively supports the capacity of current and future generations to create healthy and livable communities. Corporate social responsibility is about creating long term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks derived from environment, social, governance issues and economic factors. Corporate social responsibility should promote Green economies and result in social sustainability. The impact of Global warming is getting worse with each passing day. Hence it is necessary that we contribute to the development of Green Economy. Green economy is mainly based on sectors such as renewable energy, green buildings, clean transportation, water management, waste management and land management. Green economies are the growth models for global sustainability.”
Day two hundred sixteen/365. Our doctor's office is almost paperless. When you visit your physician, the doctor turns a monitor to face you, and pages through your medical record on the computer. If you need a referral, it happens electronically. The doctor summarizes your visit in front of you, as you watch him or her type. The only time you might need paper is when the doc prints out a prescription for you to carry to the pharmacy. Even then, there is no more challenge with reading the doctor's handwriting.

This street artist is a guy named James Kite, ( www.jameskite.com - though there's not much there), who lost his job when Angus and Robertson closed. Been unable to get a job; no benefits because of stupid bureaucratic idiocy (he couldn't provide a bank statement to Centrelink, because he had a "paperless" bank account, and they wouldn't accept a print-out). eBay rule changes kept stuffing him up to the point he lost any income, and became homeless. For the last four and a half years he's been trying to make ends meet with his art; got about $5 a day at first. - That despite his art (done monochrome with ballpoint pen) being absolutely amazing.

Supposedly businesses are getting more "green" and focused on not wasting resources.
Supposedly.
In my postal mail were two examples that say to me, that it is far more "efficient" for them to waste paper, postage, delivery time to send me irrelevant crap.
Magazines, in some sense maybe a dying breed, have long annoyed me with their aggressive renewal tactics- sending me messages warning me that my subscription is in danger of running out-- when I know for a fact my renewal date is 7 months away. The fill their publications with those wasteful subscription cards.
Today MacWorld is warning me again how is is my LAST chance to renew "before the early renewal discount ends" OH DEAR. But my subscription also is good through June 2010, so what do I gain my letting them have my money 8 months before I really need to send it?
Their message gets even more out of whack, "Mailing repeat notices only increases our costs for paper, printing, and postage."
So wait a minute- it is MY fault they are wasting resources? I never requested monthly mail message warnings that my subscription runs out the middle of next year.
Magazines, wake up. Especially tech ones. You could do a completely paperless, postageless renewal process online.
In these cases, I for one, am ready to welcome the death of the print business, as they are just acting... stupid.
The next gem is grom my insurance company, letting my know all the benefits of their mail order perscriptions-- "You've probabaly heard about the convenience and value of getting medications in three-month supplies. With RightSourceRx, Humana's prescription home-delivery service, the pharamacy comes to you."
Yeah, Humana, I;'ve heard about it- I HAVE BEEN USING IT FOR 3 YEAR YOU CORPORATE NINNY
So it is more efficient for them to waste "paper, printing, and postage" to tell me all about a service they should know I use.
Thus it is better for companies to waste resources, and use those wasted resources how I can not waste resources.
I wish I could go to business school and learn this kind of ass-backward logic.

create a new cockpit experience. The upgrade design features including the application of high
quality materials and better overall use of space, resulting in a wider looking flight deck.
A great level of attention is dedicated to details, such as the twin needle stitching with contrast
thread featured on the yoke, which provides the feel of a luxury vehicle steering wheel. Map
lighting, as well as the sun visor, are more aesthetically pleasing and positioned where they are
most effective. Storage is increased and designed to integrate smoothly into the cockpit
environment.
The Bombardier Enhanced Vision System (BEVS) provides pilots with significantly improved
situational awareness and the ability to observe runway lights and the runway environment in
difficult operating conditions, such as low visibility and or darkness. BEVS also enhances safety
by helping to identify runway incursions. The heart of the BEVS is the CMC Electronics
CMA-2700, a new, third-generation member of its SureSight
® family of I-Series™ integrated
sensor systems for Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) applications, integrated with
Rockwell Collins Heads-up Guidance System (HGS®).
The Global Express XRS (rebranded as Global 6000) is an improved version of the original aircraft, (announced on October 6, 2003 during the NBAA Convention at Orlando (Florida)) offering higher cruise speed, increased range, improved cabin layout and lighting. It is reported that the letters have no significance, but were chosen by focus groups simply to improve the brand image. The range increase is achieved by addition of a 1,486 lb (674 kg) fuel tank at the wing root. The Global Express XRS entered service in early 2006. The unit price is estimated to be $45.5 million (US). Bombardier claims it takes 15 minutes less to fuel the XRS than the original model thanks to improved computer systems and mechanical refinements.

It's a calm day in Confederation Park when a lack of public toilets leads to chaos. People (and animals) everywhere need to find somewhere to go outside. Some are better than hiding it than others. Due to economies at home here in the yateleyart household and as an attempt to create a paperless Christmas, this is a do-it-yourself Christmas card.
To receive the card in the traditional way please print it off.
Once you’ve done that, simply fold it in half horizontally (keeping the writing on the outside). Next, fold it in half vertically (keeping the pictures on the outside). Lastly, forge our signatures on the inside and place it on your mantelpiece - or any other horizontal surface, “Et voila!” as Santa himself would say.
Best wishes

With some extra time on my hands and a desire to package up the past, I recently undertook a big project of going paper-to-digital.
Scanning and throwing many documents was the major component. Another significant part is pulling out the meaning of al the people whom I met in a business networking context around the world over the last seven years or so.
Business card scanning devices exist but are cumbersome. Card scanning apps exist but are flakey thanks to OCR. But LinkedIn's CardMunch app, which uses human transcribers at the end of a cloud, is a revelation.
Each day for the last couple of months, I scanned several dozen cards using CardMunch, which is designed for iPhone but which scales up to work on my iPad mini. Little by little and regularly was the strategy.
Each scanned card includes a datestamp. This at least allowed me to easily identified the cards I last scanned for later online categorisation.
CardMunch takes the basic information contained in business cards, as input partly by human staff, but marries the humans in excellent fashion, with online technology that pulls in richer data for each contact whose email address is also a LinkedIn handle. This augmented each of my contacts with details not even contained in their original card.
Once all that data is in CardMunch, I exported the rich contacts to my iPad Contacts app, which is set up via CardDAV to sync my Gmail Contacts, which already contained a few thousand contacts.
The task took a couple of months, a few minutes each day, on irregular days.
In total, I scanned roughly 600 business cards. This tower of cards is testament to many of the digital media decision-makers i met circa 2006-2013 at conferences, meetings and social events around the world.
