Air Canada's long-touted paperless check-in has come a long way -- unfortunately I still ended up with a paper bording pass at the airport...
A supporting screen grab for this blog post.
Today is my 18-year anniversary with my employer. As I was tidying up my office I realized that while most people collect personal effects in their office over time, I have gradually reduced mine. As I have climbed the corporate ladder, moving to a new workspace with each transfer, I have shed extra stuff along the way. I have a few personal effects in my office, but not many. I have almost completely adopted a paperless environment, thus reducing the need for filing cabinets. I have one drawer that contains a few files and our company's current catalogs. The other drawer contains hand lotion, condiments, and coffee creamer.
I guess I could hang a few of my pics on the walls, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I did have a large framed print on the wall opposite door, which is the first thing people see when they enter my office. But, alas, I gave it to my son to hang in his home. The cork strips were already in my office, but I don't care for them much.
You can see a small portion of my bookcase, which primarily holds binders of reference materials and our company's catalogs from prior years. Next to the bookcase is a low cabinet, which also serves as a printer stand, though I don't print much. The other wall is blank. Two guest chairs sit in the corner and the wall facing my desk is covered with a huge white board.
So there you have it. A glimpse at where I spend my work hours. Maybe one day I'll give you a glimpse at my workspace at home.

With some extra time on my hands and a desire to package up the past, I recently undertook a big project of going paper-to-digital.
Scanning and throwing many documents was the major component. Another significant part is pulling out the meaning of al the people whom I met in a business networking context around the world over the last seven years or so.
Business card scanning devices exist but are cumbersome. Card scanning apps exist but are flakey thanks to OCR. But LinkedIn's CardMunch app, which uses human transcribers at the end of a cloud, is a revelation.
Each day for the last couple of months, I scanned several dozen cards using CardMunch, which is designed for iPhone but which scales up to work on my iPad mini. Little by little and regularly was the strategy.
Each scanned card includes a datestamp. This at least allowed me to easily identified the cards I last scanned for later online categorisation.
CardMunch takes the basic information contained in business cards, as input partly by human staff, but marries the humans in excellent fashion, with online technology that pulls in richer data for each contact whose email address is also a LinkedIn handle. This augmented each of my contacts with details not even contained in their original card.
Once all that data is in CardMunch, I exported the rich contacts to my iPad Contacts app, which is set up via CardDAV to sync my Gmail Contacts, which already contained a few thousand contacts.
The task took a couple of months, a few minutes each day, on irregular days.
In total, I scanned roughly 600 business cards. This tower of cards is testament to many of the digital media decision-makers i met circa 2006-2013 at conferences, meetings and social events around the world.

This ATC had to be paperless, so I used sturdy, flexable plastic for base, hessian for the owl, real tree for the branch and buttons for the eyes. See my blog for more.
Bought for work. Plain large reporter, used in "landscape mode." I tend not to bring my laptop to work meetings.
Apprently we're fairly paperless as an office, too, as the supply room had a couple steno pads and that was it.
Maybe I'll write a CBA and start expensing my writing supplies.
Pen: Uniball Vision Elite, Blue-Black, Fine. Around here I can find them at Walgreens, for about $3 a pop.

One word:
One more proof of how drastically my home setup changed after my switch from laptop (MacBook 13") to desktop (iMac 27"). Before I was using my AiPort Express as a wireless printer switch. Since our our home is about as paperless as it can be, with us using email, sync between Macs and iPhones, we were almost never printing. Meaning that this was either not connected, or both printer and router were in standby mode.
Now the printer is connected to the always running but power saving desktop. The printer itself is turned on only when a print job will be done. The router is used now to stream music form the iMac in the office to a Logitech Pure-Fi Express Plus via it's external in jack. The control of the music and podcasts is done via the Remote app on my iPhone.
What you see on this "under exposed spy-cam" shot is a pic of the AirPort Express plugged and discretely hidden in one of the corners of our bedroom. (Post processing with Photogene, PS Mobile and Lo-Mob iPhone Apps)
*as only my mother could tell them, #5 0f 12 "Der Schneider und das Judenkind" After the murder of our Protector, Reinhardt Heydrich, the Nazis in Prague went on a rampage arresting people left and right, specially Jews. A wealthy Jewish woman about to be arrested took her two year old boy to her seamstress for safekeeping until another family member would take the boy of her hands the following week. It so happened that no one came for all the woman's relatives were arrested as well.
For three years the seamstress and her German husband raised the boy as their own.The boys real parents were gassed and no came after the war to claim him. The couple being Sudeten Germans, were being expelled by the avenging Czechs, as they got to the border, the five year old boy by now, had no "papers" and was taken away from them at gun point.
Many of these "paperless" Jewish children, mistaken by the Czechs for German children or fathered by Germans, were simply turned over to the "social
services" and placed for adoption by childless Czech families.
This is one of the many stories my mother told me.
The above illustrates the husband of the seamstress as he tries to protect the boy from being taken away by the border guards.
p.s. not all of my illustrations are of a humorous nature. LOL.

I was supposed to post this 3 months ago. It was the day I left United States for good. Even though I was interested in Photography since childhood, I couldn't pursue it either because of financial issues or lack of enthusiasm or a good company.
It all changed in the year 2005, when i bought my first DSLR. Was in Auto pilot mode (Auto mode) for almost 3 years. When things got bit boring, I have started learning what real photography is. It is not capturing whatever comes in our path (some of you may disagree). It is about capturing moments, time and the life itself. I have learned many things during my journey by looking at other's photographs and practicing till i get what i want.
I will always be thankful to this country for it's great places, people and providing me opportunities. As life won't stop, photography is not going to stop here. Looking forward to travel and take my photography to next level in my own country, India.
BTW, this is a time lapse video shot when i was vacating my apartment. Loads of statements, papers piled up from 6 years to be shredded in 1 day ? It reminded me the benefits of Paperless Billing :-)
Marshfield, WI is mostly known for its clinic that carries its name, Marshfield Clinic. A town of around 18,000 people is home to this thriving medical center that was started by 6 Doctors with and "Idea" (to bring quality medical care to rural communities) in 1916. This old leather Doctor's bag belonged one of the founding Doctors. I wonder how many house calls it made? From the "Idea" in 1916 to the new paperless medical records in 2007, "Innovation", Marshfield Clinic has become a cutting edge Medical Research and clinic organization that treats people from around the world and every state in the US. It now has over 50 outreach centers in northern WI. and employes over 700 doctors with specialties in more than 80 areas. Total employment now exceeds 7,000.
I was blessed to be able to use items from the Clinic's archives. Normally that is not allowed, I guess I knew the right person. The bag and old record book go back to the early 1900's and the tablet is what is in use today.

This installation entitled “Unlimited Talk and Text” challenges us to face the reality of the times we live in. A 10ft (3m) paper mâchéd tree sculpted with pages from found phone books is reincarnated again to its natural posture reminding us of the past we once lived in while at the same time reminding us of the future that is ahead of us. The phonebook is no longer a necessity as technology advances us into a paperless society putting this species of ‘staple household items’ on the endangered list while the process of making these books also leads to putting species of trees, forests, habitats etc. on the endangered list as well.
For a Diploma in Information Technology, I have far too much paper waste.
As Liangcai tells me, the paperless office is a fucking myth.

Bell media, is a proud Canadian Company ? It's Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas Nevada USA. Prior to the big game CTV has been flooding North American airways with ads to promote their full coverage of the upcoming American Superbowl and they will then broadcast 10 straight hours of uninterrupted prime time live T.V. coverage of this prime American sporting event on Superbowl Sunday 2024 ? However, on the other hand, back home in their home country of Canada, they don't broadcast anything at all, nothing (zero) blanco, zilch, silencio, not even 1 minute of CTV coverage of their own 2024 Canadian Grey Cup game for their fellow Canadians to enjoy ? www.flickr.com/photos/74039487@N02/53523500175/in/datepos...
Feb 2024 - Halifax Nova Scotia,
Bell media and CTV have deafened and blindfolded many East Coast residents after eliminating many critical hours of local and community news programming in the Atlantic region ?
Recent Bell Canada Corporate decisions have now left many Maritimers in a vulnerable position ? East Coast Provinces appear to be the target of severe local live Newstime cancellations and these cut-backs have left many Maritimers without their daily Noon news hour updates that are broadcast everyday all week long ? ATV viewers will now be forced to tune into the other station (CBC) where CBC tends to run mostly world international news along with their select choice of the National News, along with lengthy live news conferences that are put on by the PM and other liberal party members ?
Aside from terminating the popular weekday ATV Noon hour news show, CTV has also downsized in half the very popular and iconic , 'ATV live at five' 5 P.M. local community news program, (prompting long time popular host Jason Baxter to seek early retirement) ? Adding to the devistating loss of this much needed news reporting that is traditionally broadcast every week, Bell will also now terminate all weekend Saturday and Sunday local news reporting currently running on ATV ? The cancellation and elimination of so much allotted local news airtime that is normally given to Atlantic Canadians surely threatens the safety and security of residents especially now that there will be a 24 hour local news blackout for 2 full days each and every weekend and even for as much as 3 consecutive days every holiday long weekend ? And so it seems that arch rival CBC has taken over prime time live local news reporting in the Maritimes and Bell Canada is blaming the Liberal Government's new Bill C-18 for them having to slash so many prime time hours of local and Provincial news coverage in the Maritimes ?

Is this a CBC Stanley Cup cruel joke ? June 2nd, 2024 Edmonton ? Fans are upset after CBC had broadcast the first 5 games of the Men's NHL Dallas vs Oilers series, and then, without warning and for no logical reason, CBC blacked out the critical and most important climactic final game that saw Edmonton win and gain entry into the Stanley Cup finals ? It remains unclear why CBC would do this ? Was it arrogance, or was it to be mean spirited, or was it a gender bias issue due to this being Men's pro hockey, or was it maybe a lesson given out to remind Canadians just who is running this Countries main media and who controls the programming ? v=iW0yzPhwC4s" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW0yzPhwC4s

We went up to Grandma's in Chambersburg on Christmas Eve for a little visit, then back to the UU church in Hagerstown for their Christmas Eve service. Darren and I organized our gift-giving efforts, and then he got everyone to bed, so I could summon my inner-elf and put out some goodies for the kids before going to bed myself. This year, we decided to go "paperless" and I "wrapped" everybody's gifts in blankets, towels, grocery bags, etc. Very functional and equally suspenseful. We also gave the kids some fun, but practical things this year, including hockey gear, musical equipment, and Zofia's big gift of new bungees on my old Bellicon rebounder. I made the kids vegan pizza for dinner, and Darren and I had some raw "wraps" and smoothies. Happy and relaxing holiday vibes!
August 9, 2011,
Please don't close our libraries. You were elected on a platform to cut "fat". Libraries are not fat to be cut from the budget, We all know that the KPMG reports tell the government where they spend our money but they have done a poor job of actually determining the non monetary value to the people living in the city. Why would they after all KPMG are just auditors and accountants, tasked with the job of determining areas of expenditures that could be cut. Where is the other half of the report? Without an analysis of the impact of a cut or the value of a service these reports are useless, a waste of tax payers money. By value I'm not talking economic return. After all if the city job was to generated a profit you would all be fired.
Back to the libraries sure it's possible we have one or 2 too many but where is the proof? Did KPMG give us any? Many of the libraries have wonderful meeting rooms but no modern equipment such as digital projectors. Here a modest investment in modernization could have a large return for the community. I think I can here you grumbling "how is that going to save the city any money" Well your a business owner so you know that you have to spend money on modernization to save money in the future. I hear you mumbling "I have no money to spend". Well I think I can help you there.
What about cutting out most of the governments printing services? How much waste is in printing publications that if anyone wants to read them they could be read online? Most of the paper ends up in the garbage or in taking up valuable storage space. I'm sure you have a report on the City of Toronto going paperless, somewhere if you could only find one of the 1000 printed copies. The money saved year after year would be more then enough to bring our libraries up to a "World Class" standard, not to mention the downstream savings in materials, storage and waste management.
Yours truly,
Concerned Citizen
P.S. It has been rumoured that the city of Melbourne Australia followed a KPMG myopic report on the privatization of the tram system. So far this has cost them over one billion dollars. I know you will be smarter then their mayor.
