I first visited the former Fletchers Paper Mill at Greenfield in 2008. Returning this year i half expected it to be all said and done but never the less i had an inkling there would be more to see.. Things went well!

Big Meadow full of Rough Hawkbit.

Built on the site of an old whiskey distillery in 1874, this old papermill near St Andrews was one of the biggest local employers for 130 years or so. In 2008 the mill went into receivership, and was closed. Plans are afoot for St Andrews University to turn the old mill into a green energy biomass centre. Oh, there's also a rather cool little brewery that's sprung up in one of the buildings. It sits in an incredible location near the mouth of the Eden estuary.

The Windflowers in the ancient woodland at The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve. If you find a scene like this you can be sure your standing in some woods that haven't been disturbed much for about four hundred years or so. The spread of this wild flower is around two metres every one hundred years.

My favourite nature reserve - The Knapp & Papermill looking splendid in its autumn clothes. Five minutes before I took this shot I was watching Roe Deer in the dappled shade amongst the trees while listening to Buzzards overhead.

The Turquoise Line 19 has been increased from every 15 to 12 minutes and also rerouted via Papermill.

Papermill is a new housing development on the site of the old Donside Papermill. Had First got its way many year ago this would have been the site of its global HQ and depot but opposition from nearby Tilydrone residents halted plans.

The new Papermill service goes very close to Balgownie Drive (the flats evident in the trees behind). Balgownie Drive residents have repeatedly called for a bus service to be restored after First withdrew services in 2006 but have so far fallen on deaf ears. Although the 19 goes so close to Balgownie Drive there is the small matter of the a River Don that gets in the way.

Notably although the 19 now runs via Papermill there are no bus stops on the new stretch for it to stop.

My favourite of all the nature reserves in Worcestershire.

This is Papermill meadow and there's no sound of traffic, if it's possible to find a remote place in this county it's here, no roads just footpaths, you have to put in the effort to get here, it's surrounded by woodlands, the only man made noise I here sometimes is a chainsaw. This is the place I go to recharge and clear the mind.

Design Principle: The paper mill I work at is well over 100 years old and is a mismatch of buildings built over the years. I thought this setting would give a kind of dark and grity feeling to my B&W photo that I wanted. I took this picture early in the morning as the sun was rising above the river that this mill sits on. I wanted to play with all the different lines such as in the siding, roof angles, smoke stacks, etc... Since there is no color, I emphasized the contrast between the different structures, shadows, steam, and the sky.

Editing: B&W, Sepia and cropping. I also adjusted the Highlights and Shadows to give some texture to the steam and the sides of the buildings.

This spot is one of my favourite places to visit being way off grid.

Its surrounded by tree covered hills which are part of the Suckley Hills AONB. Sometimes you hear a chain saw or tractor and the occasional dog barking, otherwise it's bird song or the wind rustling in the trees

Most of my nature photography is done here at The Knapp & Papermill nature reserve in Worcestershire. It's close to where I live, it's got many different habitats, Hills, Valleys, Wildflower meadows, an Orchard, Leigh Brook running through and Woodlands, High and Low. It's also situated in the Suckley Hills AONB and its lovely and quiet - pretty much everything I need.

Alvøen or Alvøy is a manor house located on a historic industrial site in the Laksevåg borough of the city of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. Alvøen Manor was once one of the grander private homes in Bergen.

History

Alvøen is the site one of Norway's oldest industrial communities and one of the best preserved industrial locations. In 1626, King Christian IV of Denmark granted the right to establish a gunpowder mill on the site. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1733, but rebuilt. Didrich Jansen Fasmer (1706-1770) improved it and built another gun mill in the 1760s. Towards the end of the 1700s, Alvøen became an industrial site with working houses attached to the factories. Later it started production of saltpeter, linseed oil and paper. Hendrik Jansen Fasmer (1766-1836) founded the paper mill during 1797. In 1858, Hendrik Fasmer (1835–1930) built a new papermill in Alvøen and from the late 1800s the production was concentrated on finer grades in different blends of cloths and cellulose. Alvøens Papirfabrik A/S manufacturing paper in Alvøen until stopped production in 1981. At that time, it was the oldest paper mill in the country. The specialty was finer paper for documents and from 1908, supplier of paper for Norwegian banknotes.

Alvøen Manor was the main residence of the owners of the paper factory of Alvøen. Alvøen Manor was originally built as a countryside retreat for members of the Fasmer family in 1797. Eventually the rococo main building was surrounded by several gardens. Alvøen Manor and the factory were opened as a museum (Alvøen Hovedbygning) in 1983, as a branch of the West Norway Museum of Decorative Art. It is now[as of?] managed by the Bergen City Museum. The site includes Alvøen Manor together with some forty worker cottages and production buildings dating from the 1800s.

Alvøen lies at the Vatlestraumen strait, west of Bergen, where the cargo ship Rocknes hit an underwater rock and capsized in January 2004. The wreckage was towed to Alvøen, stabilised and partly examined, before being taken to the CCB base at Ågotnes in Sotra for further examination and recovery.

...in the sun! Yes, directly into the sun. But what are you going to do when you get here and see that!? Gotta take a picture or two, right?

Its rare that this local has anything other than a roadslug set. The 2772 is pushing 15 cars into the Glatfelter paper mill in Chillicothe, Ohio, while crossing the NS Columbus (OH) District at CP Renick.

CHALCOSYRPHUS EUNOTUS (Loew) VULNERABLE

DISTRIBUTION Only six known sites within the Welsh Borders and southern England: Knapp and Paper Mill N.R., Alfrick (1986 and 1987), Shrawley Wood, nr Stourport (1986 and 1987) and an unspecified site in the Wyre Forest (1971), all in Worcestershire; Cothill NNR, Berkshire (1953); Ledbury, Herefordshire (1899) and Bracketts Coppice, Dorset (1987).

HABITAT Old broadleaved woodlands with streams.

ECOLOGY Larvae probably develop in dead wood. Most records apply to adults sitting on partly submerged logs, strongly suggesting that the larvae live in semi-submerged wood. Adults recorded in May and June.

STATUS Four post 1960 sites. It may prove to be more widespread along the Welsh borders with more thorough searching and the Dorset record is encouraging. This species is likely to remain vulnerable through the apparently specialised choice of breeding site.

THREAT Unclear, but probably the clearance of old woodland sites and removal of dead wood, especially semi-submerged logs.

MANAGEMENT Maintain known sites as broadleaved woodland, retaining any semi-submerged logs and ensure a continuity of dead wood in future by maximising the number of diseased and post mature trees
