Paper to Pearls is a project of "Voices of Global Change" that sells jewelry crafted from recycled paper that is handcrafted by women in refugee camps in Uganda. Almost all of the proceeds from the jewelry is returned directly to the women so that they can become independent and provide educational opportunities for their children. Learn more at www.papertopearls.org/. Photographs taken at the DC Green Festival on November 7, 2008.

Every summer paper wasps nest around the outside of the house. These in the photos are on the porch ceiling (so actually they are clinging UPSIDE DOWN, I rotated the photos to make them easier to comprehend). The nests are attended by multiple individuals but they seem to be pretty goodnatured, never bothering me or the dogs, even if I get fairly close to photograph them on the nest. At this point in the year the females are just exploring to find where to build a nest.

This is the first time I have noticed the activity shown, where one wasp gets on top of another. The one on the bottom has her wings folded over her body making the body look dark from some angles so at first I thought this was a predatory behavior between two species.

In the preceding picture the wasp that will be "mounted" adopts a submissive posture while two others "stand up" to do something: recognize each other? Then one gets on top of the submissive one, and the third one hangs around or wanders off. Often there is no third wasp, just the "dominant" and "submissive" ones.

Female paper wasps collaborate on building and guarding a nest though only one female may actually lay eggs in the nest. I don't think the males appear at the nest site, but breeding takes place before nestbuilding, elsewhere. So I'm thinking this isn't copulation. Maybe one female exerting dominance to become the one that reproduces? I need to mark them so I could track better.

More details: they build small (2-4 inches across) cup-shaped nests attached to a ceiling or inside a sheltered place like a shade, with a slender pedicel, and each nest contains >15 cells. Cells are stopped up with more paper not with the cobwebby material I have seen in pictures of the nests of some species.

I would be grateful for more information on these very interesting insects. Although observed in SW Oregon they may be European paper wasps but I'm not sure.

These are some of the songs I've written during the past 5 or so years. I couldn't even play the guitar when some of these "tunes" were penned!

After crossing the Columbia River on the Keller Ferry (free!), we came to what was listed on our paper map as a campground. While it does say it's a trailhead - and that's what it is, primarily - it does have four or so campsites, with fire rings and picnic tables. It also has a pit toilet and, just like most of the time, it was clean and well stocked with toilet paper. Thank you, National Forest Service! It's just off highway 21 at the boundary of the Colville Indian Reservation. It's officially in the Colville National Forest and the nearest town is Republic, Washington.

LOVED this campground! You are in a canyon and the cars from the nearby highway die down as soon as the ferry stops running for the day. They have a bear-proof trashcan, and we made sure all of our food, food prep tools, toiletries and anything else smelly was in our panniers. We had a perfect night here drinking way too much beer and wine. It was a magical night.

This was the end of day three of our 2022 motorcycle travel adventure.

From Sept. 2 to Sept. 17th, we toured Western Washington state, went through Idaho to Montana, then headed back into and through Southeast Oregon, all via our motorcycles, to see historic towns and places we wanted to revisit, as well as to find new adventures. It was my first extended motorcycle trip since 2020, and it did not disappoint! Lots of biscuits & gravy!

The travelogue describing the trip in full, with lots of advice on routes & destinations, is available at www.coyotebroad.com/travel/2022motoadv/

Most hand dryers have instructions not just for hand drying, but for blasting yourself in the face with hot air. Why? Who does that? The only scenario I can envision that being useful for is if your hair was wet and you needed to dry it. But seriously, what are you doing washing your hair at the movie theater?

I cut a 3/8" x 14" piece of layout bond and curled it tightly around an exacto knife handle, let it fall on a piece of black construction paper and made some slight adjustments to the arrangement. I then pointed an LED flashlight from various angles at the resulting composition. This picture was shot with a Pentax *ist D with Lensbaby 2 + Tokina .45X Conversion Lens (macro)

My son Bouke and I made fantasy birds by watercolour. I multiplied the birds. The idea of wrapping paper came from Bouke.
