Today was a big day, and it had nothing to do with the holiday. Nope, it marked my first day back to work since we lost Felix. I can't claim the day was a difficult one. I enjoy what I do and I adore my co-workers. We share common interests and they make me laugh and feel at ease. And I'd talked the husband into baking one of his acclaimed chocolate cakes (aka "the crack cake" - called thusly for its high cocoa content) for me to share with them. So in the morning we got all sugared up, then ordered pizza for lunch, and engaged in some minor Nerf gun skirmishes in the afternoon. No complaints. But I do know my limits. I'm just not ready to go back to working full time. I tire easily and have some healing to do yet. And I want to spend more time with the little man while I still can (he's in half-day kindergarten for the rest of this schoolyear, next schoolyear it's first grade all day). So for now I'm going to work part-time. And I'm lucky to work for a company that is okay with that.

Tango and Chaco with a little bit of Sir visible in front on the Ptarmigan Lake Trail. Heading home in the late afternoon.
Another trip to Ptarmigan Lake. This time I brought another two llamas, #4 son, a hand saw, and ice axes. Using the tools, we were able to make it all the way to the upper end of the lake. Too many downed trees to make it past there to Snow Pass and Paradise Valley.

We're going out of town for a couple of days. One of the dictators who lives here (child under the age of five) has to have surgery at U of M. We're going to go over and bop around the hospital for a couple of days. We'll check in later and see who won the Mardi Gras contest on Secret Life of Material Animals. No partying without us!

On July 25, 2011, Karen Frey of Clark University, scoped out the packing yet to be done during the final week of the ICESCAPE mission.
The ICESCAPE mission, or "Impacts of Climate on Ecosystems and Chemistry of the Arctic Pacific Environment," is NASA's two-year shipborne investigation to study how changing conditions in the Arctic affect the ocean's chemistry and ecosystems. The bulk of the research takes place in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas in summer 2010 and 2011.

Spätzli's cage has been disassembled to make room for more boxes. Also hoping to get rid of some Ikea tables and drawers very soon, so that I will have more space.
I've had to hurry up because the noisy upstairs neighbours want almost all of our furniture and some electronics. At least we hit a jackpot there and may not have to spend as much money for furniture removal as we originally thought.

Nothing fancy today. Up to my ears preparing for a week totally unplugged so I snapped this picture in the packaging process.
I will of course have my camera with me for my daily shots and I hope that nothing breaks…
