wasn't going to put another sparrow hawk on but this one is just for Nicola , taken not long after you and Jo left us

Sorry I havent been on lately Ive been so busy. OK i use photo shop TOO MUCH so i PROMISE this is the last time i will use it. But for now im all out of pictures. Tell me what you think (:

Put you up on the highest shelf

I'll talk ’cause I know myself

Leave you be to collect your dust

And give me some to forget about

Out of sight but you're in my mind

Shut it off but you left a light on

And it trickles down to my chest

A feeling I can't get around

Need a push just to get me started

Tell me how to get by without it

Will forgive but I don’t know how

You and I are a lot alike

I love just as hard as you do

And the moment captures me too

I know I said that this was it

But now that I think about it

But now that I think about it

But now that I think about it

Light the fires and put the kettle on,

Winter's over and spring be swift.

We welcome days that never end when sunlight's harvest is our gift.

But thanks is due and hope's a glimmer.

Within these flames our fealty shimmers.

Oh, Brigid, Mother, Sister bright,

we set the darkness all alight.

The arrival of a Western Swamphen, the second pf this species to be seen in Britain this year has resulted in this beautiful; nature reserve being put on the map. The first Western Swamphen was seen at Minsmere in late July and this could be the first wild bird seen in Britain of this species.

Other wildlife included 5 Spoonbills although numbers had peaked to 22, minimum of 10 wader species including Spotted Redshank and Curlew Sandpiper, 5 birds of prey species including Hobby and plenty of Marsh Harrier, Little Egret, a hooting Tawny Owl and at least 10 Bearded Tits.

There were still quite a few Dragonflies out and 3 species of butterflies.

In a superb natural setting, where the rivers Trent and Ouse join to form the Humber, Alkborough Flats is an exciting project, which helps prevent thousands of homes from flooding. The site is perfect for lovers of wildlife. By breaching the river defences new habitats have been created, which are a haven for wading birds and wildfowl, making the site an ideal area for bird watching and leisurely walks. A number of events are held at Alkborough Flats throughout the year, including group walks, bat detecting and photography sessions. Limited accessibility on some footpaths.

Mark puts the 2301 to work and adds some contrast to the sky by pulling 40 cars of pipe into America's Central Port. 23 cars from a previous pipe train remain on the property and that made for fun viewing of switching for Grady and I as we watched Mark & Mike stash these 40 cars in a few cuts around the port. Plenty of business is a good thing but will make for some tricky days of switching this week. Thanks to Mark for the heads up on this movement.

Put the old 50mm 1.8 on the camera this afternoon. I was all excited about Leaca's 50, but not so sure this will be a good fit for me. Requires complete manual operation. But at least with the LCD screen, I can test aperture against shutter speed. Since I like a short dof, the speed had to go extremely high, although I didn't write down which setting it was at, I do know it was F/1.8.

Cute, ain't he?

Bijna dagelijks passeert trein 61030 rond 14:32 uur station Putten.

I've put a lot of work into this girl over the past eight months since getting her from Dallas ... a LOT of training in and outside of classes ... and at last, after two very long hikes with Tanya and Mr. Poodle himself (Jasper) this weekend, I now feel confident in Matlin's off-leash abilities. She has come OFF the long line and is an amazing listener and trail buddy.

Yesterday she encountered her first 'game', as a red squirrel broke just in front of her on the path. A simple "ah" from 50' away, and she stopped. She even left a dead goose on the trail today instead of bringing it home for dinner.

Every day I am grateful for this girl ... but this weekend I am doubly grateful for her as she blossoms into one amazing companion.

Many, many Moons ago when I were a young apprentice the very first job we went on was taking down this pair of gates for restoration. Someone had managed to back their car into them. They were stripped, straightened and had some of the leafwork, the ovals and collars replaced (see detail) as well as the strip with the rosettes on down the middle put on. We also put the automation motors in the ground..

Lichstrahlen wie ich sie liebe... :)

After years of procrastination I finally put my name down a few months ago for a Scottish Region Class 24/1 from Sutton's Loco Works. The loco selected is D5132, which comes in BR standard green with a yellow warning panel. Delivery is expected sometime next year but meantime I've been giving some thought as to where it will go. Being displayed on a shelf is not an option being considered - especially as the loco comes with the full-monty regards sounds and effects, including the 'stay-alive' feature.

Given that usable space is at a premium I've come up with the idea of a loco shed, theoretically located somewhere in the Borders area, during the steam-diesel transition period of the early 1960s. While D5132's home was Inverness 60A (making it a shoo-in for the Kyle and Far North Lines), seeing as I'll be the Operations Manager, I've decided the occasional trip down to Carlisle is a possibility, where it might encounter some ex-LNER and LMS friends.

The sketch attached is how it's currently visualised - it isn't to scale, but I do have a scaled plan. Use is made of a 3-way point and a double slip to save space. The shed is two-road with pits just in front of the entrance, and a water crane The well turntable is currently sized at 32 foot - which will turn a 3F Jinty but nothing bigger, so I may end up rethinking that.

The backdrop will be a brick retaining wall with a street scene above together with houses and shops. Just in front of the retaining wall will be a coaling stage - the line behind the shed used to access the coaling stage is long enough to hold a class 24 with a couple of mineral wagons, which will then be propelled back. I may well put a diesel-oil tank and another water crane there, to make it a 'one-stop shop'.

Entrance to the shed yard will possibly be through the bridge at bottom right. However, thoughts subsequent to this sketch are to have it from a small two-platform station currently being designed which, if it comes off, will also provide a circuit for continuous running.

This foray back into railway modelling is very simple after 50 years away so we'll see how (or even if) it goes. I have acquired some rolling stock - a covered van, three 16T mineral wagons (two with coal added), and a brake van, all of which are secondhand. I've also acquired enough of the track pieces (Peco Code 75 Bullhead) to start work on the Shed yard, although the baseboard and supports are still being researched so construction will have to wait until that's resolved and installed. Likely layout size will be 1.0m by 2.5m.

Imminent steps include acquiring a DCC controller - probably the Digitraks Zephyr Express - but, whichever it is, it's a steep and often confusing learning curve for someone who's only ever known the simple bi-directional analogue controllers of the 1960s.

It should make for some interesting fun over the next few months - if it does indeed get off the ground.

Apologies for the lack of responses lately. This coupled with Christmas prep, family, elderly relatives, and other personal commitments has made big demands on time. I will be however catching up over the next few days. Cheers, David.

12th December 2022

We walked him to the station in the rain

We kissed him as we put him on the train

And we sang him a song of times long gone

Though we knew that we'd be seeing him again

73119 Paul Taylor and 73202 at Tonbridge West Yard on Tuesday, both coupled to snow and ice treatment trains.

I put my gym bag into my car this morning, walked around to open my door and saw that my front tyre was flat as the proverbial. Disaster!

So I called the tyre place (Kwik Fit) and the advice was: don't try to drive on it. Then I called the AA, and a very nice man eventually found me and my car. He inflated the tyre and said : don't drive faster than 50 mph. (Ha ha - in Edinburgh?). And that I should take the car to the tyre place as soon as I could.

The tyre place was all booked up until 11, but they shuffled cars around and found a place to park my car.

I walked to John Lewes and into the cafe to console myself with coffee and a scone. I was tempted to spend money so that I might feel better about spending money on a tyre. (Potential disaster!)

I took this photo from the cafe - you can see all the way to Leith - the chevrons on the funnel of the refugee's ship are visible on the left - by the water . (The water being the Firth of Forth.)

As I looked at the refugee's ship, I thought - this could be a whole lot worse.

And in fact, it was a whole lot better. The tyre place fixed my tyre and didn't charge me anything.

I should add that I am a long term customer of Kwik Fit, and think they are wonderful.

put a pile of Kosher salt under the microscope and with a bit of focus stacking and Photoshop got a cool image

With super heavy hearts we put down our wonderful little man yesterday. He was just shy of his 16th birthday and was dealing with multiple issues, including a tumour, cataracts, and signs of dementia.

When we got him in 2008 he was 6 months old and we were his third home, not counting his birth home. The first thing we did, when we got him home was give him a bath, as his owner had bathed him in aftershave, and told us the ladies loved it. Things got off to a rocky start, as he often got up and left the room when we arrived, sometimes stopping to pee on the wall before leaving. I told Tracie, I was not sure if this was going to work out, but months later we were best buddies and have been ever since.

Clancy came when you called him........ sometimes... and we often thought he was half cat. He was a dog of many names. It was “Clanderson Gunderson” for a while. Years ago it was “Rodent Faced - White Bellied - Stinky Breath - Basement Pisser”, as he and his brother often preferred to use the concrete floor in the basement if the weather was bad. I loved to call him “Lumperdumps”. The best one was “Doufus McTroublelump the 3rd”. Tracie had a dog tag made up with that name on it for my birthday. Shortly after, I had Clancy at the Vet for a check up and the Vet started laughing out loud when he noticed the tag.

Some time ago we had a group over and were sitting in the yard. Appetizers were on plates sitting on a plywood top over our firepit, so they were right at Clancy’s eye level. He was super interested but we kept telling him no. At some point someone said something hilarious and we all started laughing. Clanc seized the moment and grabbed one of the appetizers and sped up the hill to the back of the yard. A perfectly timed heist...........

I have spent hours and hours and walked miles and miles with this little guy, and after retirement, became a big fan of the 20 minute afternoon nap. Clancy would jump up on the bed and snooze beside me, often with his head on my shoulder. Best feeling ever.......

Rest in peace little man - we miss you tons

While I was out yesterday I came across this. It's near the footpath down to the Catholic school and the wearing of mask space lasts for a good 100 + metres.

The students are often dropped off by parents at this point, or they're walking to school.

Sadly the number of Covid cases is on the increase in France (not in our region, at the moment). Although a lockdown will only be used as a last resort, or so it's been said.

Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites.

Put down the booze

Let the demons win the fight

Dropped my gloves to the ground

You know I'm sorry

For the times I made you cry

I made an art of letting you down

I used to say

It's only me I'm hurting

But I saw you on the stairs

The kid was crying

And the dogs were howling

And a siren filled the air

What's the word on the street

Have I lost my crown

Or will I be king again

What's the word on the street

Have I lost my crown

Or will I be king of everything

Tempted myself time & time again

Like self destruction was so cool

I mocked your tears and I scarred your heart

I blamed the past and I blamed you

I used to say

It's only me I'm hurting

But I saw you on the stairs

The kid was crying

And the dogs were howling

And a siren filled the air

What's the word on the street

Have I lost my crown

Or will I be king again

What's the word on the street

Have I lost my crown

Or will I be king of everything

What's the word on the street

Have I lost my crown

Or will I be king again

What's the word on the street

Have I lost my crown

Or will I be king of everything

Ja, ook Putten heeft een bocht. Meerdere zelfs.
