The Protected Landscape of Malpaís Grande is a natural area on Fuerteventura Island. It spans 1,719 hectares on the island's west coast. The name "Malpaís Grande" refers to a volcanic landscape formed by historical eruptions. This area features volcanic rocks, cliffs, and black sand beaches, and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including endemic species.
Established in 1987, the Protected Landscape of Malpaís Grande aims to preserve and protect the area's natural and cultural value. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, bird watching, cycling, and water sports. It's important to follow the rules to ensure the protection and conservation of this valuable natural heritage.
The Poblado de La Atalayita (La Atalayita settlement) contains aboriginal remains, including livestock structures and dwellings, which give this natural monument high archaeological value. These remains show the presence of aboriginal populations in the area before the arrival of European colonizers and their influence on the local landscape and culture.
La Atalayita is named after the nearby hill, which stands at 90 meters high and was used by the indigenous people as a lookout point to oversee the area. From the top, they could spot incoming vessels and alert the community.
️📍 This photo, captured from the summit of that same hill, features the landscape of Malpaís Grande, Barranco de Abajo, the Interpretation Center, and the archaeological site of Poblado de La Atalayita, along with the surrounding stone walls.

The Marjal de Pego-Oliva is a protected natural area located in the Valencian Community, Spain. This wetland is located between the provinces of Alicante and Valencia, and extends between the municipalities of Pego (Alicante) and Oliva (Valencia). It is known for its ecological richness and biodiversity, being a place of great interest for the conservation of aquatic flora and fauna.
### Main Features
1. **Freshwater Wetland**:
- The Marjal de Pego-Oliva is one of the most important freshwater wetlands in the Valencian Community. The water comes mainly from underground springs and the Bullent River, ensuring a constant, good quality supply.
2. **Biodiversity**:
- This ecosystem is home to a wide variety of species of both flora and fauna. Among the plants, reeds, reeds and reeds stand out, which are typical of wetlands. As for fauna, you can find bird species such as the bittern, the royal warbler and various species of ducks. It is also an important habitat for amphibians and reptiles, as well as for fish species such as the fartet and the samarugo, both of which are in danger of extinction.
3. **Area of Conservation Interest**:
- The marsh is included in various environmental protection networks, such as the Natura 2000 Network, which is a European ecological network of biodiversity conservation areas.
4. **Water Importance**:
- In addition to its ecological value, La Marjal de Pego-Oliva is crucial for the water management of the region. It acts as a natural water filtration and storage system, helping to maintain hydrological balance and prevent flooding.
5. **Recreational and Educational Activities**:
- The natural space offers numerous opportunities for ecotourism. There are interpretive trails and bird watching routes that allow visitors to enjoy and learn about this valuable ecosystem without harming it. Educational activities are carried out to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands and their conservation.
### Management and Conservation
The management of La Marjal de Pego-Oliva involves coordinated efforts between different administrations and conservation organizations. Management plans are carried out to protect threatened species, control invasive species and maintain water quality. The involvement of the local community is also vital for the conservation and sustainable use of this natural environment.
In summary, La Marjal de Pego-Oliva is a natural treasure that combines landscape beauty, biodiversity and crucial ecological functions, being a model of wetland conservation in the region.

Coral Sunset Intersectional Itoh Peony .
A sunset in a flower! Aptly named for its awe-inspiring transformation from a radiant, vivid coral through a range of peaches, and finally, a creamy white colour, the flower is a masterpiece at every step of this sunset, and one might argue a bloom only improves with age. Unique from other coral varieties in that it opens with the most intense coral colour and has petals that are more ruffled, which perhaps contribute to a fuller appearance. Has a lower, more compact growing habit than Coral Charm. Mass plantings are recommended as flowers at different colour stages provide a visual riot in the landscape.
Side buds are possible, extending the bloom period. A favourite of the peony garden, this outstanding peony produces intense sunset coral, semi-double blossoms with rose overtones and a fluffy deep yellow stamens in the center. The lightly fragrant flowers are long lasting in fresh bouquets. ‘Coral Sunset’ blooms early in the peony season, around late spring in Ontario It is highly prized for its exemplary plant habit. and by florist as cut flower in bouquets.

The Prince's Palace of Monaco is the official residence of the Prince of Monaco. Built in 1191 as a Genoese fortress, during its long and often dramatic history it has been bombarded and besieged by many foreign powers.
The New Zealand dotterel/tūturiwhatu is an endangered species found only in NZ. There are only about 1700 birds left. Loss of habitat and introduced predatory mammals are to blame for their decline in numbers. This male is displaying his breeding colours with his flushed chest feathers of rusty orange.
Little known fact: The Tatooine sand was super abrasive and very bad for any hardware that wasn't specially protected from it. The X-wings weren't. Sometimes, after prolonged use, the engines began to oscillate near ground and rough landings ensued.
This was photographed exclusively for my "Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy" book.

Three young bison bulls demonstrate how crazy activity during the rut can be. Here one bull mounts another while that bull is fighting with a rival.
We laughed out loud at this ridiculous display. I kept saying "no way".
Note how close we were to this action...182mm. Fortunately almost all the bison rut shots I made were taken from the rolling rental car blind. To have exited the car most of the time would have been foolish and dangerous. We saw one guy get out of his camper van and was barely out the door before a cow charged him. He quickly re-entered the van and hopefully learned a valuable lesson.
One more post in my bison rut series tomorrow, then I'll move on to some more serene wildlife shots.
