1.Recreational Prospecting: In many countries around the world, mining enthusiasts have the freedom to make small scale movements towards finding gold; however, some countries also have policies on what a hobbyist may or may not keep. Most times, one may be allowed to use only pans and shovels to mine which makes sense as using other tools are signs of commercial mining. One also has to thoroughly examine the law of the land when panning for gold as these can serve as guidelines as to what can or cannot be used for mining and whether or not any gold you find can be retained in your property.

Glasnevin Cemetery, officially known as Prospect Cemetery, is the largest nondenominational cemetery in Ireland. It first opened in 1832 and is located in Glasnevin, Dublin.

Prior to the establishment of Glasnevin Cemetery, Irish Catholics had no cemeteries of their own in which to bury their dead and as the repressive Penal Laws of the eighteenth century placed heavy restrictions on the public performance of Catholic services, it had become normal practice for Catholics to conduct a limited version of their own funeral services in Protestant cemeteries. This situation continued until an incident at a funeral held at St. Kevin's Cemetery in 1825 , provoked public outcry when a Protestant sexton reprimanded a Catholic priest for proceeding to perform a limited version of a funeral mass.

The outcry prompted Daniel O'Connell, champion of Catholic rights, to launch a campaign and prepare a legal opinion proving that there was actually no law passed forbidding praying for a dead Catholic in a graveyard. O'Connell pushed for the opening of a burial ground in which both Irish Catholics and Protestants could give their dead dignified burial.

The cemetery is located in Glasnevin, Dublin, in two parts. The main part, with its trademark high walls and watchtowers, is located on one side of the road from Finglas to the city centre, while the other part, "St. Paul's," is located across the road and beyond a green space, between two railway lines.

Glasnevin Cemetery contains many historically interesting monuments as well as the graves of many of Ireland's most prominent national figures — Charles Stewart Parnell and Daniel O'Connell as well as Michael Collins, Éamon de Valera, Arthur Griffith, Maude Gonne, Kevin Barry, Sir Roger Casement, Constance Markiewicz, Brendan Behan, Seán MacBride, Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa, Christy Brown, Frank Duff, Luke Kelly of the Dubliners. Boyzone singer Stephen Gately was cremated at Glasnevin Crematorium, which is located within the cemetary grounds, on October 17th, 2009.

The cemetery also offers a view of the changing style of death monuments in Ireland over the last 200 years: from the austere, simple, high stone erections of the period up until the 1860s, to the elaborate Celtic crosses of the nationalistic revival from the 1860s to 1960s, to the plain Italian marble of the late twentieth century. Glasnevin Cemetery has grown from its original nine to over 120 acres.

The high wall with watch-towers surrounding the main part of the cemetery was built to deter bodysnatchers, who were active in Dublin in the 18th and early 19th century. The watchmen also had a pack of blood-hounds who roamed the cemetery at night. Prime Minister, Robert Peel, when questioned in Parliament on the activities of the body-snatchers, admitted that it was, indeed, a "grave matter".

Glasnevin is one of the few cemeteries that allowed stillborn babies to be buried in consecrated ground and contains an area called the Angels Plot.

The remains of the track bed of the Scarborough & Whitby Railway between Prospect Hill and Bog Hall, which ascended steeply on a gradient of 1 in 50, on top of the retaining wall to the right still with it's safety railings in place, is the formation of the track bed to Scarborough, which the trains would travel along after reversal just further up at Prospect Hill.

This line closed as a through route on the 8th March 1965 although the the last trains ran on the 6th March, it now forms the 21 mile long 'Cinder Track' between Whitby and Scarborough.

History of Richland County, Ohio, from 1808 To 1908 by A. J. Baughman, Also Biographical Sketches of Prominent Citizens of the County, Vol. I. Chicago: The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., 1908, p. 524.

"Zimmerman, Levi -- Today marks the 95th. anniversary of the birth of Levi Zimmerman, of 288 W. Fourth Street. Mr. Zimmerman is one of the oldest of Richland County pioneers, Hiram Smith being the only resident of Mansfield who is older than the venerable old man. Although lacking but five years of reaching the century mark, Mr. Zimmerman still retains remarkable use of all his faculties. His sight and hearing although failing are still good. The people of Mansfield have always felt the deepest interest in Mr. Zimmerman. The estimable character of the old gentleman has won for him innumerable friends who view with pleasure the successful passing through one year after year. The unwonted longevity of the life of Mr. Zimmerman has also attracted the attention of the citizens of Mansfield all of whom heartily desire that he pass the century mark before being called to his eternal home. Mr. Zimmerman, although not enjoying as good health as a year ago, is still able to get around with remarkable celerity considering his advanced age. His mind is wonderfully lucid and while filled with reminiscences of his younger days, he still takes the liveliest interest in the doings of the world today. A little over a year ago Mr. Zimmerman sustained a severe fall and he has never quite recovered from the shock. While resting, Mr. Zimmerman feels in the best of health but when walking or moving about, he finds that the >> Text missing from photocopy - Consult microfilm for full article << and two years later in company with his uncle, he moved to this county. The family of nine of which Levi was the oldest, lived in a log cabin of only one room in Orange Township, now part of Ashland County. Levi set himself to mastering the trade of tin and copper smithing, later practicing in Massillon, Norwalk and this city. Later, he opened a shop in Bucyrus but soon returned to this city. He has resided here continuously since 1834 with the exception of a few months when he joined the rush to the newly opened gold fields of California. He went to California in 1850, going by way of the Isthmus of Panama. He practiced his trade instead of prospecting. He worked in Sacramento and in a mining camp named Marysville. Mr. Zimmerman recalls that he was forced to pay $210 for a months rent of one half of a tent. Louis Vonhof, the building of the present Vonhof Hotel, was also in California at that time. Returning to the city in 1815, Mr. Zimmerman again took up the practice of his trade. In 1855 he married Miss Mary Ann George of Bucyrus. Four children were born of the marriage, three of whom are still living, they being Mrs. M.E. Douglass, Mrs. H.C. Hedges and a son Eli. All of his brothers and sisters are dead with the exception of the youngest, who resides in California and whom Mr. Zimmernan has not seen for twenty years. Of the old residents of Mansfield only Hiram Smith and Mrs. J.H. Cook are still living. Although failing, Mr. Zimmerman still gives promise of becoming a centenarian. Mr. Zimmerman is deeply interested in all of the members of his family and was deeply pleased a week ago by the receipt of a letter from a nephew G.F. Zimmerman of Seattle, Wash. Mr. Zimmernan after wishing his uncle good health indites [sic.] a beautiful little poem of his own composition. [Mansfield (OH) Daily Shield: 17 April 1909]" —USGenWeb

The Prospect Elementary School, Pickett Street at the corner of Odell Avenue. The school has been demolished.

Prospect House, so named for its location at 3508 Prospect Street, has a storied history. It was built in 1788 by James Lingan and designed by William Thornton, the architect of the United States Capitol. President John Adams visited the residence and the Marquis de Lafayette was a house guest. While Blair House was under renovation, Prospect House served as its replacement. Notable previous owners include Secretary of Defense James Forrestal and Congressman Richard Thurmond Chatham.

The Prospect Mountain shuttle, called the Viewmobile, brings tourists who do not wish to hike the last few hundred feet to the summit. From there you have views of Lake George, New York, vistas of the Adirondack High Peaks (seen in the background of this photo) and even nearby states.

This is one of two photos of mine chosen by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's bi-monthly magazine, The Conservationist, for an article on Prospect Mountain in their October 2010 issue. This is the first time I have had photos published in a regional magazine.
