Amsterdam is the capital and most populous city of the Netherlands with a population of 872,680[12] within the city proper, 1,380,872 in the urban area and 2,410,960 in the metropolitan area. Found within the province of North Holland, Amsterdam is colloquially referred to as the "Venice of the North", attributed by the large number of canals which form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Amsterdam's name derives from Amstelredamme, indicative of the city's origin around a dam in the river Amstel. Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world in the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century and became the leading centre for finance and trade. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were planned and built. The 17th-century canals of Amsterdam and the 19ā20th century Defence Line of Amsterdam are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Sloten, annexed in 1921 by the municipality of Amsterdam, is the oldest part of the city, dating to the 9th century.
As the commercial capital of the Netherlands and one of the top financial centres in Europe, Amsterdam is considered an alpha-world city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) study group. The city is also the cultural capital of the Netherlands. Many large Dutch institutions have their headquarters there, including Philips, AkzoNobel, TomTom and ING. Also, many of the world's largest companies are based in Amsterdam or have established their European headquarters in the city, such as leading technology companies Uber, Netflix and Tesla. In 2012, Amsterdam was ranked the second best city to live in by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and 12th globally on quality of living for environment and infrastructure by Mercer. The city was ranked 4th place globally as top tech hub in the Savills Tech Cities 2019 report (2nd in Europe), and 3rd in innovation by Australian innovation agency 2thinknow in their Innovation Cities Index 2009. The Port of Amsterdam is the fifth largest in Europe. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the busiest airport in the Netherlands, and the third busiest in Europe. Famous Amsterdam residents include the diarist Anne Frank, artists Rembrandt and Van Gogh, and philosopher Baruch Spinoza.
The Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest stock exchange in the world. Amsterdam's main attractions include its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam, the Concertgebouw, the Anne Frank House, the Scheepvaartmuseum, the Amsterdam Museum, the Heineken Experience, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, Natura Artis Magistra and Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam. They draw more than 5 million international visitors annually. The city is also well known for its nightlife and festival activity; several of its nightclubs (Melkweg, Paradiso) are among the world's most famous. It is also one of the world's most multicultural cities, with at least 177 nationalities represented

My first proper LEGO Train related event, really happy with it and how many people I seemed to make happy! Thanks to everyone who organised and exhibited at the event.
Hope to get more involved in future!

I'm going to loosen up a bit on a stupid principle of mine, always posting all photos from the same event together and chronologically here on Flickr. Following that principle I end up almost never posting some of my photos, and I can always order the photos in sets later anyway. So here's a shot from Sunday night on Roskilde Festival 2009 - and without feeling any obligation to post the rest of the festival photos before I post something else:-)...
The Green Wheel was a new attraction on the festival. A 30m tall Ferris Wheel giving you a very nice view over Orange Stage and the field in front of it.

A sequence of images I have taken over a period of 7 years which display the proper motion of this well known binary star.
Images captured using a Skywatcher 254mm Newtonian with a Modified Philips SPC 900NC Webcam on LX Mode. The telescope was initially mounted on an EQ6 HD then an EQ6 Syntrek for the later captures.
Hot pixels removed before final levels slightly adjusted with G.I.M.P.
G.I.M.P. used to align & slightly crop images with layers tool. Annotations added also added with G.I.M.P.

'Win' (Winifred?) at the front and 'Norah' (holding the wheel) in their Talbot-Darracq Tourer at Brean (i think).
I picked up four old photo albums at a boot sale last weekend and they turned out to be full of wonderful pictures from 1922-1925 of the 'sisters' (Update: They may not have been blood relations!) exploits and travels, many of them local to my area. They lived in Weston-Super-Mare! - With research i have managed to find out quite a bit about them and the places they visited but hope to discover more as the weeks go on.
Lots more from this pair to come! - I will replace this 'photo of a photo' with a proper scan in time.
I've looked at the album's so much over the last week that It actually feels like I know them?! :)
Our Camera Club enjoyed an outing to Helston Steam Railway. And the inevitable Cornish Cream Tea finished our outing nicely!!
Class 86/2 No. 86259 "Les Ross" crosses Dinting Viaduct as it works the 1Z86 12:00 Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Piccadilly railtour on 20th December 2008.
The railtour was a mini excursion added to the itinerary of Vintage Trains' "BBC WM Kidney Kids Christmas Special", which ran from Birmingham New Street to Manchester Piccadilly, and saw the Class 86 locomotive become the first to reach the Pennine village of Hadfield, the western limit of the former Woodhead route from Manchester to Sheffield.
Unfortunately the tour ran in miserable weather, but the sight of a 'proper' train on this usually EMU-only commuter line gives an idea of what might have been had the much-lamented Woodhead route not closed in 1981.
More than one kilometre long, train 926 makes a rare public display in daylight of what rail can really do for South Island roads.
A surprising number of big trains run at night here, leaving our laughable pair of daylight trains to putter about with two or three or zero wagons in tow.
This is the real thing. A shame we can't see them in public more often, rather than hiding rail's capabilities under the cloak of darkness.
Due to some problems, trains 925 (the DCs snapped the previous night through Oamaru) and 926 were halted at Bushey last night and 926 is seen here after the restart about 10 hours late, behind DXC 5379 and venerable DCs 4847 and the sole remaining operational bowl of diesel-powered fruit salad - 4409.

Metroline MM817 on the approach to Ealing Broadway on route E8. MM817 still sports Metroline's unique blue skirt with white trim.
Sadly very few Metroline buses retain this skirt as most have been repainted in full London Bus red. A few SEL type buses retain some of the blue skirt, though the SELs are currently undergoing refurbishment. A few of the remaining MMs at Brentford garage retain the blue skirt, understandable though given their impending withdrawal from service. Finally, there are a few TEs stationed at Potters Bar garage that have the distinctive blue skirt!
On Saturday 28th May 2016 route E8 is extended from Brentford Commerce Road to Hounslow Bell Corner (not serving Commerce Road). At the same time, the MAN MCV Evolution style buses "MM", are being withdrawn from London service as the E8 route gets converted to double deck VWs from Holloway (HT). VWs that have been displaced by spare TEs displaced from the 91 due to the LT/ST conversion.

This is one of my favourite formal combinations so I wanted to show more pictures than usual because I love the look so much. Today I am not working, however I have decided to have a "formal day" at home by myself. I do not have these types of days as often as I wish, but I enjoy them immensely when I do.
I will begin the morning with a hot relaxing shower before dressing myself. As you are surely aware by now I love the tuxedo look and I consider white bowties to be the most formal looking colour. I will take extra care while I dress to make sure every part of my outfit looks just right, paying special attention not to make a sloppy or uneven bowtie knot.
During my "formal at home" days, of course I must not neglect regular household activities such as daily chores or preparing meals, but I also like to find time to enjoy more elegant pursuits that seem fitting for my nice clothing.
Today I plan to catch up on some correspondence in the morning. I need to finish some overdue reports and writings I have been assigned, and I will also prepare a handwritten letter to my sister in France. It feels so nice to do these elegant activities in formal wear and gloves.
I like to enjoy more elegant activities during my formal at home days. Music is a such an enjoyment for me and I will often listen to my phonograph as I go about my daily activities dressed nicely. I think it is more fitting than digital music when wearing formal clothing. I also play both the guitar and the piano, and using an instrument is also a favourite activity of mine that seems very elegant.
I have heard it said before that dressing well is a means of showing respect, both for others and yourself. To this end I try to imagine how I would act and behave differently if I lived in a bygone era with more stringent standards for these activities. There is of course a side of me that is quite relaxed, when I visit with close friends for example and wear jeans and hoodies, but today I will focus on proper posture and the graceful and elegant movements of a lady as I go about my day. If someone calls on the phone I will speak respectfully in a more quiet, formal tone. When I dine, I set my table with proper place settings and candles. Practicing these elegant and ladylike activities are something I enjoy immensely.
I have been exploring this style for a few years now, and I have been growing much more comfortable in making it "mine." I like the way I look, and I like the way others look when dressed formally, but I also think it helps one with remembering to hold themselves to higher standards of poise and behaviour while they are dressed well.
I wish you a pleasant Sunday, and if you dress well today I hope you take a extra care to show a little higher standard than normal in your activities.
After respray into what was Slack's up t date livery, if memory serves me right, it only lasted a season before it was sold.
I put some of the new seed out for the birds and not before long there were around 10 Sparrows on the table, all fighting for the bowl. They *love* it!

First proper chance I have had to use my new 10 stop ND filter and what a location to try it out. Decided to go down to Portknockie for sunrise and try and capture my own image of this stunning natural feature.
I will need to try this again in a few weeks as the sun is still rising too far to the south. The colours weren't very nice so I desaturated quite a bit in Photoshop. I love the foreground here but still think I could have composed it slightly better.

A proper Scottish machine, 18020 arrives onto its stand at the very end of Dunfermline Bus Station, with a 3A service. This vehicle was new for the trunk 11 service from Ardrossan to Kilmarnock in Blue & Cream, that was acquired from A1 Service. It had a spell at Stagecoach West though in 2019 is living its life out in its home country
