New Year's Traffic on the infamous Bay Bridge S-Curve which has been plagued by accidents since it opened on September 8th, 2009. There were 50 accidents within the 1st 2 months. It is a temporary solution until the new span is completed.
Per Wikipedia: The original spans of the bridge east of Yerba Buena Island became the subject of concern after a section collapsed during the Loma Prieta earthquake on October 17, 1989. The replacement span is engineered to withstand the largest earthquake expected over a 1500 year period, and it is expected to last at least 150 years with proper maintenance.
It has been under construction since 2002. Originally scheduled to open in 2007, several delays caused it to now be scheduled to open to traffic on or just after Labor Day 2013 at an estimated cost of $6.3 billion.

I wonder what it saw when it was looking at me. Maybe it couldn't believe its eyes for some reason.

Well after a frustrating couple of weeks including one outing ending in me being covered in mosquito bites with no decent photos to show for it, I think I needed this!
I decided just to drive down to my "go to" beach Milford on Sea with moody photos in mind but during the drive the sun came out while it was still raining so I was really hoping for a rainbow. This appeared just after I set up - sometimes you just need a bit of luck :)
Cooking through Boylston a pair of good looking SD40-2's lead the Grand Rapids turn in the fast fading light.

Wow… some proper colour in my stream at last!
I promised myself I would get out and about at least one outing per month and post a minimum of one image a week (last year was a pathetic 44 images). Unfortunately I missed out on the STS’s advanced manoeuvres in Skye last week, but the opportunity of an impromptu weekend break in the lakes presented itself so off we trotted to Grasmere to stay with friends who had booked a fantastic property for the week, just 10 minutes’ walk from the village centre (check out Heron Beck).
A walk into the village for a look around and the compulsory visit to Tweedies (stayed rather longer than we planned, but when in Rome as they say). So only managed a few snapshots, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen any blue sky or sunshine for that matter so happy to post anything at the moment.
I left my camera on Tatooine about month ago, on a small rock, almost similar what's on the background. It was camouflaged and there was a motion detector on. I was quite surprised to find a shot of a Sandtrooper on a memory stick! There we're also a few shots of sandstorms but they we're nothing special...
I need proper name/title for this photo. Something it can remembered, something about this moment, feel, loneliness... I dont' know!? Can you help me and suggest me a title? If you want to participate, you can post your suggestion(s) simply by leaving a comment below. Any other comments are also welcome! ;)
EDIT: stavos suggested a title "Deserted" and it was chosen by the jury!
The Kings in town, at least i think he was. The Royal Train passed through Teignmouth heading south at approx 0500. The train took refuge on the South Devon Railway until approx 1000hrs when it pulled into Totnes where the King alighted. This is where i enter into the world of speculation and i speculate that he went to Dartmouth Naval College for a passing out parade.
He then returned at about 1400.
The train eventually left at 1435 as 1Z53 heading north but where is unknown at this moment in time.
Here are 67005 67006 as 1Z53 Totnes to ? along the River Teign approaching Teignmouth.
In a surprise encounter, Conrail JR-5 heads south down the Chemical Coast Secondary with SD45-2 1700 towing a K652 down to Tremley Point on March 6, 2021. I was heading down the Turnpike to Monmouth County when I noticed the hind end of an ethanol train going through CP Port. Without seeing the power, I continued south and made a quick U-turn at exit 13 and positioned myself at CP Ralph to snag a photo of them coming over the old CNJ Elizabeth River Lift Bridge. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's to always bring your camera wherever you go. You never know when you'll need it.

The eight o'clock First Great Western (FGW) service from Cardiff Central passes through a well trimmed Cowley Bridge Junction in Exeter behind an EWS branded #67022 on Tuesday the 9th March 2010.
Today, the jungle in the foreground has returned and the Cowley Bridge Inn is a pub no more!
Oh well, life changes sometimes not for the better!!!!!!
On a stormy afternoon, CN 909, still painted in its original orange Bessemer scheme, leads empties through Munger. On our trip to the Iron Range, shooting this was a top priority, and I'm super glad we were successful in getting this in the rotation.

A crumbling tholtan ruin and lone tree situated high up in magnificent Glen Dhoo exposed to the winter onslaught with a mix of snow and rain lashing down over the valley. The conditions when shooting this were absolutely appalling and it was one of those rare moments where I genuinely feared for my camera equipment. The air temperature must have been close to zero but most of the precipitation was falling as rain, very heavy rain at that! I was totally soaked down to the skin by the time I was finished and my camera geared for all intents and purposes, may as well have had a bath such was the soaking that was experienced.
I shoot with a mirrorless Nikon Z7 camera which is a 7-year-old body now but still going strong. Conditions like this goes to show the value of proper professional level weather sealing on camera gear, especially for avid landscape photographers.
This photo was an impromptu unplanned image that I captured before declaring defeat and hiking back out of the valley. It turned out to be my favourite image of the day because it perfectly captured the conditions and the desolate isolated atmosphere of this hidden valley. A bone chilling but wonderful photography experience!

2/3 Cambridge "Half Marathon" series. A proper Spring day yesterday for the race. Winter again today.
This superb fellow was also at Tenterfield Park. I quickly got a photo once he emerged from the sticks and twigs. He flew off straight after, perhaps he didn't have his makeup prepared for a proper photo shoot?
Picture has been cropped.
As soon as Mario and I managed to find each other in the crowded center of Milan, we walked around looking for a good spot: I think Mario did see the beautiful Lera and Anastasia and I did go and approach them: at first they both were ok with posing, but a bit surprised and uncomfortable, but a few shots later they both enjoyed the experience and helped us with strong expressions. If I recall correctly, Mario suggested to take advantage of the cigarette and use it for the frame and, at some point I think Mario also helped with the reflector.
It took me a while to get proper control of the situation: thankfully Lera is an experienced model and was really great and helpful!
I got quite a few good shots, but I think the gaze in this one is pretty strong.
I had the chance to have a talk both with Lera and Anastasia and we spoke about their experience in Italy and about the beautiful Russia: Anastasia suggested I should go and see Moscow.
This definitely was a good start for a great day with Mario!
Thank you so much Lera: it was really fun taking pictures of you and wish you all the best!!!

CN 578 (Daily Senneterre - Val d'Or Turn) is seen pulling out of the yard with the pride of the fleet as a leader.
A proper Cotswold establishment, it looked great. We went to see if they were serving food and they were!!
You can see the amount of water outside, it was very wet.
This year the Providence and Worcester Railroad continued to provide their passenger train and crew for the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council's extremely popular Polar Express trains with trains running and 3:30 and 6:30 PM Fri-Sun for a total of 42 sold out trips in 2024.
The train consist is deadheading south from Worcester to begin the final weekend of performances with B39-8E 3910 (GE blt. Dec. 1987 as LMX 8534) amidst a winter wonderland scene of the first significant snow of the year. They crossing in Blackstone River near MP 17.9 on the historic original Providence and Worcester mainline just north of the Rhode Island state line. This is the 10th of 14 crossings of the Blackstone along the 43 mile line when traveling south from Worcester to Providence.
As I've told you before in previous posts the P&W is my hometown road and it is inextricably linked to the river it follows both historically and physically. The Blackstone River courses 48 miles from its headwaters near Worcester (at the confluence of the Middle River and Mill Brook) to where it flows into the Seekonk River at the headwaters of Narragansett Bay. The river drains a watershed of 640 square miles and more importantly drops 450 feet in the 48 miles. It is that drop, that made this river a pivotal point in American History.
From ririvers.org: A series of steep drops along the length of the Blackstone River provided ideal conditions for the development of water powered industry. Samuel Slater arrived in America in 1790, with managerial experience and technical knowledge of textile manufacturing in England. With the assistance of local merchants and artisans, he helped establish the first successful water-powered textile mill in America. Slater Mill was established on the Blackstone River, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. This achievement is credited with spawning the birth of America's industrial revolution. Development of the Slater textile mill catalyzed the development of water-driven technology throughout the length of the Blackstone River. By 1914 water-powered mills occupied all of the readily available dam sites in the Valley.
As the birthplace of industrial America, the need for transportation quickly arose in the valley, and between 1825 and 1828 the Blackstone Canal was constructed. The canal lasted only 20 years having been rendered obsolete by the opening of the Providence and Worcester Railroad in 1847. The railroad has proven to be a more durable method of transportation and 175 years after its opening here it is still serving the purpose for which it was built.

I have been wanting to find this place for years. Yesterday, I finally made it. This obscure place is called, False Kiva. It's in Canyonlands National Park, but don't expect to find it on any map.
There are no tour buses there. There are no Japanese Tourists shooting photos of each other, standing in front of the kiva. There is not even a trailhead, or a sign identifying the trail in any way. Just some footprints in the desert to follow. They don't want you to go there. They don't want anyone to find this place.
With proper instructions, and enough time to get lost a few times and wander around in circles, and slip and fall on some of the loosest rocks I have ever stepped on, it is possible to find this. I'm so glad I finally did.
It ended up being a really overcast evening, which was sort of a mixed blessing. The light in the foreground was really nice. The light in the canyon in the background was kind of blah. When I got back and looked at the images, I couldn't believe how much detail I was able to pull out of that fairly gray sky.
Proper cool night out tonight with Rob H and a visit to a new tunnel, which is prime light painting real estate. Its dark in the day. We made friends with a newt and we both got shots we were really happy with.
What more could you ask for.
Refractograph set up after framing Rob and the tunnel. Positioned and sized to give some sense of reality.
Fired the shutter and let the refraction element burn in for 10 seconds. Lens swap to the Pentax 28mm then walked away from camera shining a torch gelled the same colour as the refracograph and back again. Then turning towards Rob I used the Palateth method of lighting the scene, as if the light form was illuminating Rob and creating a believable shadow.
All in all a superb mid-week faff in top company. Happy days.
Minimal tweaks rto the raw file in Lightroom.
Inspired by the epic work of Alan Jaras, David Hull, Ectro and the ever awesome Palateth. Cheers chaps.
After hours of sitting in Selkirk Yard, Q253 throttles out of the yard here at Gamefarm Road on the Selkirk Branch with now another former SCL SD40-2 leading as an add-on from the yard. Two empty oil trains ahead of the autorack train had gotten gevo add-ons, but thankfully that was not the case here.

Seen at the 46th Annual Spring Gathering, London Bus Museum, Brooklands.
One of the trial buses to be fitted with Hanover's new high-resolution screen went to the show and the added flexibility allowed the shuttle 462 service to be programmed on the display. All other London buses have to show blank or Special Service with 462 in the window.
Thanks to a quick sign test I found out that the resolution of the front screen is 512x88, already far superior to the standard 144x19 but with added smoothness from the anti-aliasing.
