The proper name of this butterfly is more commonly known as the European Peacock and can be found in Europe and as far away as temperate Asia and even as far away as Japan. This species was formally classified as Inachis and was the only member of this genus with the name Inachis being derived from Greek mythology meaning lo, daughter of Inachus. The large peacock like eye spots on the upper wings are used to startle and frighten its predators. When resting the wings when closed will look very similar to a dead leaf and when felt threatened a quick flash of those eye spots is usually enough to scare its predator off. Can be seen on the wing from July- September, and after hibernation March-May.

Allards at Greenwich Concurs Show 2021

Back to what i enjoy doing best, spending some time on my favourite boat filled beach, you just never know what you are going to capture.

A proper pirate walks into a bar wearing his pirate hat, eye patch, old guns by his hip, and of course also a hook. The barmaid asks him.....

What the hell happened to you? why do you have a hook? The pirate replies, Ah well it's just one of these war stories, you know ... lost my hand in a fight.

Wow! And how did you get the eye patch?

Oh, that's because a seagull sh*t in my eye there once.

Barmaid responds, What? No one loses their eyesight like that?

Yes that is true answers the pirate.....but at that point I'd only had the hook 3 days!!!

Boom Boom!

Have a good week.

Series: The new district: The European Quarter in Berlin

Some days it pays to go out and shoot as you never know what you'll get. CP has quickly integrated KCS power on various trains through out their system. Before the merger was approved and CN had a competing bid, I was quietly cheering CP on for my own selfish reasons as CP's roster had become stale to me after they repainted all the 60's and replaced the "good" power with ECO's. I was heading to Newport when I over heard KCS 3952 tone up the dispatcher in Hastings, so I made my way down to Blackbird siding to watch J20 roll by. Unfortunately this would be a one and done situation with solid clouds to the south.

Would like to think i have done what the boats name suggests, the sun was setting behind me and the sky was not as good as this, I'm quite pleased with the final result.

The best breakfast I have had in Britain for many years so I thought it deserved a post. This was at a cafe near Ambergate Station between Belper and Matlock in Derbyshire.

In case you're wondering - yes I did eat it all and no I didn't eat for the rest of the day!

I played a Gacha >_< But I got this cool outfit out of it!

Adding two more West Michigan lighthouses to my goal of photographing all 20. I'm up to 16 now, need another trip to the Michigan northwest.

...and finally a proper trip out with my newly acquired Z8, well I have had it since early June, just too busy with work to get out.

Please enjoy the beach details in Large. Thank you so much for your visit!

Like three years ago, starting the new season with a wonderful and enchanting Hubble's Variable Nebula (NGC 2261)

Previous approach: www.flickr.com/photos/olegbr/8552071862/in/dateposted/

I wanted to personally check whether it still variable ...

It was found that this is so :)

Here animation L-channel 200%: olegbr.astroclub.kiev.ua/files/astrofoto/NGC2261/NGC2261_...

Of course, 3 years - a very large interval for observing the changes in the nebula. Everything is much faster: www.umanitoba.ca/science/astronomy/cbrown/imaging/hvn/ana...

In 2013-2016 animation, I drew attention to the star just above the nebula, which is for 3 years significantly shifted to the right.

To heighten the effect, combined with the current picture image DSS., For about 60 years, the offset is already pretty decent. olegbr.astroclub.kiev.ua/files/astrofoto/NGC2261/NGC2261_...

Here www.astrosurf.com/mcianci/ngc2261.html Italian colleague calculated that the proper motion (proper motion) of the star 0.2" per year. The name is NLTT 16798 and is listed as High Proper Motion Star: simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/sim-id?Ident=NLTT+16798

Explanation: What causes Hubble's Variable Nebula to vary? The unusual nebula pictured above changes its appearance noticeably in just a few weeks. Discovered over 200 years ago and subsequently cataloged as NGC 2661, the remarkable nebula is named for Edwin Hubble, who studied it earlier this century. Hubble's Variable Nebula is a reflection nebula made of gas and fine dust fanning out from the star R Monocerotis. The faint nebula is about one light-year across and lies about 2500 light-years away towards the constellation of Monocerotis. A leading variability explanation for Hubble's Variable Nebula holds that dense knots of opaque dust pass close to R Mon and cast moving shadows onto the reflecting dust seen in the rest of the nebula.
