The family today ain't what it used to be. Chris Meney takes us on a sociological expedition through the good and the bad of the old and the new types of relationships.

##################

"Changing social attitudes during the late 20th century have led to an increase in de facto and same-sex relationships as well as giving people more freedom to end relationships, start new relationships or remain single." -

The Australian Bureau of Statistics isn't telling Urbanites anything surprising (see Links). Perhaps no other Church teaching is challenged so constantly in everyday life, especially for a young urban adult.

There's probably not a hit movie or TV show that doesn't portray cohabitation before marriage as a natural "next stage" in a relationship.

And most of us know, or even are part of, the many couples who live together before marriage.

Yet what's wrong with that, especially for those in their early 20s and early 30s without kids (most of us at Urban Theology)? Surely to live with someone is to know them? Especially since the rising divorce rate shows marriage these days isn't much more than a big wedding bill and a piece of paper ?

Of course, the intelligent Urban Theologian knows that the Church has a thoughtful and nuanced defence of the traditional nuclear family.

Come join Chris Meney from the Life, Marriage and Family Centre and your fellow urbanites in their early 20s to early 30s at our new venue in the heart of the CBD - the St James Hotel. It's dinner, drinks and learning about another issue ever-present in the minds of intelligent young adults.

Abour our April speaker:

Chris Meney is a Director of the Life, Marriage and Family Centre, an agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney established to extend the research, policy, educational and pastoral activities the Church undertakes with respect to life, marriage and family issues.

wonews.net/ar/index.php?act=post&id=14814

Following a discussion on the KAP Forum I tried some tests to see if I could get a kite to fly reliably off the wind. Here are the results:

In this case the Flow Form 16 is the baseline kite. I tested it against a Flow Form 8, and took up as much as 2.5" of bridle line on one side of the Flow Form 16, but never got much deviation. I did not attempt to try changing the tail layout. I was pleased to see how invariant the flight is as a function of bridle tweaking, but it didn't get me any closer to flying off-wind.

Next I used the Flow Form 16 as the base kite, and tried offsetting a 6' rokkaku. In the case of the rokkaku, I took a tip from Ramon and offset the upper bridle by 2" to the left, and 2" to the right, respectively. The photos from each of these offsets is shown above.

I didn't shoot any video, but the flight in both cases was remarkably stable. Before flying either configuration I flew the rokkaku without an offset, and found it flew just off to the right of the Flow Form. This is also echoed in the above photos, in which the right-hand offset flies farther to the right than the left-hand offset does to the left.

Both kites are on 200' of line. The dimensions of the rokkaku are 5' wide by 6' high. I can't quote the dimensions of the Flow Form. I popped all this into CAD and got angles of 20.7 to the left and 24.8 to the right. I didn't shoot any video, but in both cases flight was quite stable. I'm taking this as a potential for a 20 degree offset either way, give or take.

In any case it works, and it's one more tool to add to the list. I'd like to go out and really characterize this at some point (so much bridle offset = so much sky offset). But for now it's nice just to know it's possible.

Last night was a good night.

The air was crisp and past memories flooded our minds.

We know it won’t last.

We know that tomorrow it will all be gone and everything will be as it was before.

But the feeling of freedom that I had at that moment was exhilarating.

Feeling like nothing had changed.

We were still all the innocent and sweet girls we were before.

I wished for a moment that the past didn’t exist.

That no hurt and pain had been afflicted upon the friendship that had existed.

…past tense….existed, because everything changed.

Everything changed when they came into our lives and broke the bonds that

had been there much longer than they had.

4 years of friendship and memories that were torn and broken

by these people we’d known for a short couple months.

Pictures of them flashed in my mind.

Him hugging a girl that I used to know the way he had to me.

Kissing her and making her feel like the world didn’t exist.

That’s the way he made me feel.

I felt safe with him.

If I had known they would someday be together, I would have never befriended her.

Willa was my friend and they took her away from me.

I felt betrayed by her. I hurt because I knew that it was either me or them and she chose them. After 4 years of friendship, she chose a family that we’d known for a couple months.

And Christa, the girl I had trusted and became friends with through youth group, who said she would never go out with a guy like Jeff is now hugging him, kissing him, loving him, the way I had a year ago.

So, no. I can’t forget.

I can’t let go.

I can’t move on knowing that friendship is only as strong as the influence you have over people.

I wish I could let go. I wish things could be the same as they were before, when we used to blast the music in the car and have the windows down feeling like the world had so much to offer.

But I can’t. I can’t not hate them for taking away the person I loved, my best friend, my church, my trust.

Snakes like that deserve nothing more than to burn in hell.

H, E, double hockey sticks.

On this day damselflies abounded at this reserve and even more so in the surrounding area. Most however were not particularly colourful or substantial. The eye colours in paricular really strike me. I thought they might be juveniles except for the fact they are mating.

This photo is one I love and easily my best photo of damselflies in my locality.

Unfortunately I have no idea of species. Help with ID is very welcome.

You know the african proverb:

It takes a whole village to raise a child?

I have been asked many times what I've done (as a parent) to get my daughter, Llael to 'here'. I've got to say that I definitely have not done it alone!

The mentor system is wonderful for absolutely every person - and has been essential for guiding a highly psychic child like Llael. My personal feeling is that the consciousness on this planet is rising so dramatically from the past that we have a whole generation or two of parents who are in the position of raising children who are more spiritually aware than ourselves. I can't imagine that this is the norm in most worlds.

In any case, to meet that challenge I have been reminded of the african proverb and have taken it to heart. Llael's godmother has been wonderful support and deeply knowledgeable help in many times; another friend who experienced many of these extended abilities as a child herself has been a 'ready reference guide'; and former professors, have been supportive too.

I have learned to ask, not hide. To be an advocate; To follow where Spirit leads and puts people in my footpath.

..... and to READ! Many parents write and tell me that they don’t know anyone else in their community who they can share these things with. It seems really synchronistic that the internet came into its own about the same time as the profoundly aware kids! smile. Today’s mentors might come in virtual form - often as authors of all the wonderful books available.

Becoming your own mentor

(and your child’s mentor)

We chose homeschooling for middle school and most of high school - which many parents now choose for a variety of reasons - - and it seems to suit the psychic child’s specialized education needs perfectly.

The Home education movement is a movement that is really giving us back our own knowledge - a sort of “permission” to know what we know, be our own expert - or to go become our own expert.

BUT, it’s not the only way, and not the best way for all children. Be prepared to educate your own school leaders about the need for a more spiritually-based education, one that is sensitive to sensitivities. Ask that the FULL RANGE of sensory perceptions be taught wherever possible.

This website represents some of our favorite ways that we have found to fully explore the spiritual world of children - -

If any of you have suggestions to share we would appreciate hearing your thoughts and we’ll add them to our suggestion page. Our email is below - THANKS ashcraftmmin@yahoo.com

Try to catch Thunder Road, On Black

Now let me tell the story, I can tell it all

About the mountain boy who ran illegal alcohol

His daddy made the whiskey, son, he drove the load

When his engine roared,

They called the highway thunder road.

Sometimes into ashville, sometimes memphis town

The revenoors chased him but they couldn't run him

Down

Each time they thought they had him,

His engine would explode

He'd go by like they were standin' still on thunder

Road.

[Chorus]

And there was thunder, thunder over thunder road

Thunder was his engine, and white lightning was his

Load

There was moonshine, moonshine to quench the devil's thirst

The law they swore they'd get him, but the devil got

Him first.

On the first of april, nineteen fifty-four

A federal man sent word he'd better make his run no

More

He said two hundred agents were coverin' the state

Whichever road he tried to take, they'd get him sure as

Fate.

Son, his daddy told him, make this run your last

Your tank is filled with hundred-proof,

You're all tuned up and gassed

Now, don't take any chances, if you can't get through

I'd rather have you back again than all that mountain

Dew

[Chorus]

Roarin' out of harlan, revving' up his mill

He shot the gap at cumberland,

And screamed by maynordsville

With g-men on his taillights, roadblocks up ahead

The mountain boy took roads that even angels feared

To tread.

Blazing' right through knoxville, out on kingston pike

Then right outside of Beardon, there they made the fatal

Strike

He left the road at ninety, that's all there is to say

The devil got the moonshine and the mountain boy

That day

[Chorus]

I took this shot just before I left for the night. Baby #1 snuggled up on her mom's foot to rest. I was able to snap this shot as mom put her head down for a split second before tending to her other pups.

-----------------------

I was fortunate enough to be able to go over to my friends house while his Great Dane was having her first litter. She was in labor a total of 12 hours and all the babies are alive and well! Unfortunately, I had to be at work at 7 the next morning and was only able to stay for the first 4 pups but I went over the next day to welcome the rest of the pups.

The Wood Stork (Mycteria americana) is a large American wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae. It was formerly called the "Wood Ibis", though it is not really an ibis.

The adult is a large bird 83-115 cm (33-45 in) tall and 140-180 cm (58-71 in) in wingspan. Males typically weigh 2.5–3.3 kg (5.5-7.3 lbs); females weigh 2.0–2.8 kg (4.4-6.2 lbs)[2], although large birds are up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs).[3] It appears all white on the ground, with blackish-gray legs and pink feet. In flight, the trailing edge of the wings is black. The head is dark brown with a bald, black face, and the thick downcurved bill is dusky yellow. Juvenile birds are a duller version of the adult, generally browner on the neck, and with a paler bill.

This is a subtropical and tropical species which breeds in much of South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The Wood Stork is the only stork that presently breeds in North America. In the United States there is a small and endangered breeding population in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, along with a recently discovered rookery in southeastern North Carolina. On the other hand, in Santa Catarina state (Brazil), its decline seems to have been reversed: after an absence between the late 1960s and the mid-1990s, the species is now again regularly encountered there, in particular in the Tubarão River region[4]. It is likely that the Paraná River region's wetlands served as a stronghold of the species, from where it is now re-colonizing some of its former haunts[5]. Globally, it is considered a Species of Least Concern by the IUCN due to its large range[6].

The Wood Stork is a broad-winged soaring bird that flies with its neck outstretched and legs extended. It forages usually where lowering water levels concentrate fish in open wetlands; it also frequents paddy fields. Walking slowly and steadily in shallow water up to its belly, it seeks prey, which, like that of most of its relatives, consists of fish, frogs and large insects, and sometimes lizards and rodents. It catches fish by holding its bill open in the water until a fish is detected[7].

In the United States. the Wood Stork favors cypress trees in marshes, swamps, or (less often) among mangroves and nearby habitat.[8]

A resident breeder in lowland wetlands with trees, the Wood Stork builds a large stick nest in a forest tree, with up to twenty-five nests in one tree.[8] Breeding once a year, a female lays 3-5 eggs in the typical clutch. The eggs are incubated 27–32 days by both sexes. Wood Storks' reproductive cycle is triggered when waterholes dry up sufficiently to concentrate fish in sufficient numbers for efficient feeding of the chicks. Each chick weighs approximately 2 ounces (60 grams). is helpless and is unable to fly. Competition for food is fierce, and if food is scarce, only the older chicks will survive. Week-old chicks are fed about 15 times per day, and they grow rapidly. By 14 days, each will weigh 10 times its hatching weight. At 28 days, each is 25 times heavier. During the breeding season, Wood Storks need over 400 pounds (180 kg) of fish to feed themselves and their offspring. When the weather is very warm, parents also collect water and bring it to the nest to drool on and into the mouths of the chicks. By the time the young are 4 weeks old, both parents leave the nest to search for food, and this continues until the chicks “fledge” or leave the nest. Young may continue to return to the colony for another 10 to 15 days to roost or to try to get food from their parents. A colony is considered successful if its parents average at least 1.5 fledged young per nest.[9]

Each adult will defend its nest against various predators. Corvids, vultures, grackles and striped skunks will attempt to pick off eggs.[9]. Raccoons are the leading predator of nests, and can cause almost complete colony nesting failure when water dries under nests in drought years.[10] Adults are rarely preyed on, but unwary ones have been picked off by American alligators. [11]

Wood Stork alighting, Hontoon Dead River, in Florida

This species seems to have evolved in tropical regions; its North American presence probably postdates the last ice age. A fossil fragment from the Touro Passo Formation found at Arroio Touro Passo (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) might be of the living species; it is at most from the Late Pleistocene age, a few 10,000s of years ago.[12] North American fossils from that time are of an extinct larger relative, M. wetmorei. This was probably a sister species; both occurred sympatrically on Cuba at the end of the Pleistocene.

Hello, everyone. Have you missed me? :)

Most of you probably didn't notice, but I've been absent for Flickr for more than a week.

I still took ALL of my 365 pictures - this project is a part of my life now, and I'm not going to give it up.

However, editing and uploading the pictures I take is not a main priority at the moment.

I do apologize greatly for not keeping up with any of your streams. I was busy last week, and then Friday through Tuesday I was on vacation, so I wasn't able to get on a computer at all.

But here I am again! :)

I'm actually cheating with this picture. :O It's the first time I've ever cheated, so gimme a break. :P

I did take pictures on the 29th, but they were rushed due to my seeing Eclipse at midnight, so they were all awful. Instead, I edited this picture I took last summer at Fort McHenry.

I will now be plaguing you all with nine days' worth of uploads. I apologize in advance.

I've missed you all and hope to catch up with all your streams soon! :)

St. Stephen's Basilica Roman Catholic basilica in Budapest, Hungary. It is named in honour of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose mummified fist is housed in the reliquary.

Equal with the Hungarian Parliament Building, it is the one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest at 96 metres (315 ft) - this equition symbolises that worldly and spiritual thinking have the same importance. According to current regulations there cannot be taller building in Budapest than 96 metres (315 ft). It has a width of 55 metres (180 ft), and length of 87.4 metres (287 ft). It was completed in 1905 after 54 years of construction. Much of this delay can be attributed to the collapse of the dome in 1868 which required complete demolition of the completed works and rebuilding from the ground up.

The architectural style is Neo-Rennaissance; it has a Greek cross groundplan. The façade is anchored by two large bell towers. In the southern tower is Hungary's biggest bell, weighing over 9 tonnes (8.9 LT; 9.9 ST) . Its predecessor had a weight of almost 8 tonnes (7.9 LT; 8.8 ST), but it was used for military purposes during World War II. Visitors may access the dome by elevators or by climbing 364 stairs for a 360° view overlooking Budapest.

Famous and impressive, both at a distance and nearby, with marvelous views over the capital of Hungary.

My aunt and uncle came to visit from Florida/Puerto Rico. I hadn't seen either one in 19 years. So my sister-in-law and I took them to San Francisco. We took the Ferry from Vallejo and then the Muni to Pier 39. It was a great day and we did a lot of walking. At some point my sister-in-law and my aunt decided to do some shopping and my uncle and I went and sat down on some benches. There was wonderful live flamenco guitar playing in the background and this little jewel like European Starling jumping around from place to place scrounging for food. I was amazed at how close he came to us. Obviously I had to take my shot. I took serveral pictures of him and this one was the best. It was a fun day and I'm glad I took the time to listen to the music and watch the birds :)

Following is a link to way more than you ever wanted to know about European Starlings.
