A shot from the past weekend of fishing at my favourite lake. As much as I love this location, it's really sad to see the destruction caused by a spreading epidemic, the Mountain Pine Beetle. Due to climate change, we don't get the sustained periods of freezing weather needed each winter to keep the insects in check. This has led to the demise of large portions of our pine forrests. In some cases the wood can be harvested quickly before it dries and splits, but in protected areas such as provincial parks, it is usually left standing and becomes tinder for massive forrest fires.

This street character is someone I ran across before, a day I didn’t have my camera and missed him in action and always swore to capture him one day. The man is a one man comedy show with a surreal sense of humour. He doesn’t do it for money or anything; he is just constantly amused by the world as he sees it. His constant prop is the handset part of an old phone which he constantly makes calls on!

This day he is tagging along with the Legalise Cannabis protestors who marched through Dublin in a fragrant cloud of protest, he doesn’t need what they propose, that’s for sure he is naturally out there.

The day I didn’t have a camera, he was using the same junk plastic handset as if it had a built in camera like a modern cell phone to photograph a Rolls Royce parked on the street and snapping shots of his friend another street dweller posing as if he owned it. Sighs .. Never forget a camera.

Nearly 200 m above the Mosel river next to Pommern and Karden lays the high plateau of the Martberg. Its name still reminds you of the celtic-roman god Lenus-Mars who has been worshipped here in ancient times.

In the celtic period, around 100 BC, the Martberg was a central town an oppidum of the local celtic tribe called Treveri. According to current research the plateau of 45 ha was densly settled with small houses made of wood and clay. The settlement was surrounded by a wall constructed out of timber and stones. The evidence of coinage, handicraft and many imported goods emphasize the importance of the settlement in these times.

In the central area of the mountain archaeologists found a sanctuary of several celtic-roman temples which date from the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD. The sanctuary was surrounded by a large rectangular collonade which has been 60 to 70 m. In the center stood the main temple built in the typical celtic-roman style. It had a central square building called cella and a surrounding roofed verandah with stone pillars. The cella was the most important part of the temple because there was the god’s statue placed. Next to the central temple four smaller temples were discovered built in the same way as the main temple. In the sanctuary archaeologists found large quantities of offerings. The believers offered more than 10.000 coins, hundreds of fibulas, weapons as well as thousands of miniature ceramic vessels to their gods. In the course of the christianisation the sanctuary was abandoned after 400 AD. The religious center moved from the Martberg to Karden where an early christian community was established.

Since the year of 2006 AD it is possible to visit the celtic-roman sanctuary again. The major temple with its impressive wall paintings and one minor temple are reconstructed completely. Two other temples and the surrounding wall are rebuilt partly. Furthermore you can see some houses built in the way of the celtic period. Many of the objects from the Martberg and 2000 years of the history of Karden can be seen in the Stiftsmuseum of Treis-Karden. The museum is located next to the church of Karden.

e io posso sentire l'odore dell'asfalto

White Sands National Monument, New Mexico

White Sands National Monument:

At the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert lies a mountain-ringed valley, the Tularosa Basin. Rising from the heart of this basin is one of the world's great natural wonders-the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed 275 square miles of desert here and created the largest gypsum dune field in the world.

The dunes, brilliant and white, are ever changing. They grow, crest, then slump but always advance. Slowly but relentlessly the sand, driven by strong southwest winds, covers everything in its path. Within the extremely harsh environment o the dune field, even plants and animals adapted to desert conditions struggle to survive. White Sands National Monument preserves a major part of this gypsum dune field, along with the plants and animals that have adapted successfully to this constantly changing environment.

I work at an animal shelter and took my camera to work today. This Samoyed puppy was surrendered to the shelter when his owners developed allergies. There are some dogs and puppies that come in that just make me say 'this is going to be a perfect pillow for some one' because they are so sweet and soft. I always remember when I was a kid and I'd snuggle up with my dogs.

Although this guy found safety at this animal shelter and an adoptive home, there are many others that aren't so lucky. Over 300 adoptable yet homeless animals are euthanized weekly in San Antonio, TX alone. Please be a responsible pet owner and help end pet over population one animal at a time- Spay/neuter your pet. Not only does it greatly help with pet over population but it increases your pets health and well being. It reduces risk of cancer, relieves your pet of the urge to breed, reduces aggression tendencies and can help to keep your pet wondering off to find a mate.

Prisoners in Paradise

I want to learn how to fly

I want to be respected

I want to get lucky

I want to get out of this dump

I just want to watch TV

I want to be loved

I want to be different

I want a brother and sister

I'd just rather be forgotten

I want to save the world

I want to be understood

I want to be rich

Man! I just want to be somebody

Julie's got the word today

She lost her job just one last pay

Life don't come easy anymore

Still strugglin'on by herself

Got a picture of Jimmy

There on the shelf

And she looks at him and says

Why did we let it go?

I know that sometimes baby

We didn't see things eye-to-eye

But I got just one question

Did we have to say goodbye?

Just like prisoners in paradise

Still far from heaven's door

We had it all but still we

Wanted more

Now I realize that I can't

Turn back the future's here

To stay but hey

We're just children of tomorrow

Hangin' on to yesterday

Jimmy still recalls the night

When he took his guitar

And headed on out

To find the time

That was his dream

He gave up his past

And made alright

But there's something missin'

In his heart tonight

Sometimes what you want

Ain't what you need

He misses drivin' down

To the lake at night

Holdin' his baby

In his arms so tight

Ain't it hard to find illusions

When you're livin' in a memory

Just like prisoners in paradise

So close but yet so far

There will come a time

No matter who you are

When you ask yourself

Was it right or wrong

For me to turn away.. But hey

We're just children of tomorrow

Hangin' on to yesterday

Do your cats ever lie???? Of course not!

Following a discussion on the KAP Forum I tried some tests to see if I could get a kite to fly reliably off the wind. Here are the results:

In this case the Flow Form 16 is the baseline kite. I tested it against a Flow Form 8, and took up as much as 2.5" of bridle line on one side of the Flow Form 16, but never got much deviation. I did not attempt to try changing the tail layout. I was pleased to see how invariant the flight is as a function of bridle tweaking, but it didn't get me any closer to flying off-wind.

Next I used the Flow Form 16 as the base kite, and tried offsetting a 6' rokkaku. In the case of the rokkaku, I took a tip from Ramon and offset the upper bridle by 2" to the left, and 2" to the right, respectively. The photos from each of these offsets is shown above.

I didn't shoot any video, but the flight in both cases was remarkably stable. Before flying either configuration I flew the rokkaku without an offset, and found it flew just off to the right of the Flow Form. This is also echoed in the above photos, in which the right-hand offset flies farther to the right than the left-hand offset does to the left.

Both kites are on 200' of line. The dimensions of the rokkaku are 5' wide by 6' high. I can't quote the dimensions of the Flow Form. I popped all this into CAD and got angles of 20.7 to the left and 24.8 to the right. I didn't shoot any video, but in both cases flight was quite stable. I'm taking this as a potential for a 20 degree offset either way, give or take.

In any case it works, and it's one more tool to add to the list. I'd like to go out and really characterize this at some point (so much bridle offset = so much sky offset). But for now it's nice just to know it's possible.
