I photographed this Raccoon (aka: North American Raccoon) in a small pond (alligator hole) at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples, Florida. Judging by the abundance of bubbles rising to the surface of the water, there must have been something edible there and this fellow was doing its best to make a meal of it. The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a wildlife conservation area run by the Audubon Society, a non-profit organization. More information on the sanctuary and the Audubon Society may be obtained at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary web site.
Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive degenerative disease of the brain that impairs motor control, speech, and other functions.
Parkinson's disease belongs to a group of conditions called movement disorders. It is characterized by muscle rigidity, resting tremor, slowing of movement (bradykinesia) and, in extreme cases, nearly complete loss of movement (akinesia). Secondary symptoms include high level cognitive dysfunction, subtle language problems, and depression. Some people with Parkinson’s disease develop Dementia in the late stages of the disease
In contrast to many other neurological disorders, the nature of the brain degeneration that produces Parkinson's disease has been well understood for decades. The symptoms are caused by loss of nerve cells that secrete dopamine in a tiny midbrain area called the substantia nigra. These nerve cells, for reasons that are not fully understood, are especially vulnerable to damage of various sorts, including drugs, disease, and head trauma. The term Parkinsonism is used for any process that destroys large numbers of these cells and thereby causes the same characteristic symptoms. Parkinson's disease, or more fully, idiopathic Parkinson's disease, is diagnosed when no specific physical cause for the loss of dopamine cells can be identified.
My father, Peter, suffers from dementia brought on by Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body disease and Parkinson’s disease. He is not a well man and at the young age of 72 his ability to perform normal tasks most of us take for granted is diminishing. He often suffers from confusion and memory loss but despite that he is still a loving, gentle and intelligent man with a ‘Dad’s’ sense of humour.
Recently, due to an increasing difficulty he has with shaving, he began growing a beard. I love it. After seeing him clean shaven for most of my life I reckon it really suits him. He is quite proud of it himself – and I think he really enjoyed ‘modelling’ for photos despite the fact smiling isn’t easy for him these days.

Verantwortlich für die künstlerische Konzeption des „Herbstleuchtens im Park“ ist der Lichtkünstler Wolfgang Flammersfeld aus Unna, der in den letzten Jahren Parks, Höhlen, Stauseemauern und Schlösser spektakulär beleuchtet hat. Gemeinsam mit seinem Team freut er sich insbesondere auf die Illumination der Südbastion. Die vielen Gänge und Nischen bieten einem Lichtkünstler viele phantasievolle Möglichkeiten, mal hell und buntleuchtend, mal gruselig mit sich bewegenden Schatten. Man darf gespannt sein.

As your aware i do like Urbex , its a nice break away from my landscapes and its exciting , This place however was just such a big temptation , Cwn coke works , when i say this site is "Dangerous " i kid you not , We got as far as the weigh bridge just as i crossed the yard i looked right to see a security guard and his German Shepherd who then ran towards me , no fear this dog new the command as the guard new i was no real threat he was concerned for our safety and his , he said he had a busy day with tresspassers , even the guards were not allowed into this area " Just look around you" his words !! But what a place sadly he declined to show us around :-) But a truely great guy who asked us to leave and then he disappeared as we did !!! I have no plans to return the one office were were in had Ammonia test machine , test tubes & Acid its an Urbex dream but a death trap !!! its alos one amazing place.
Me posting this may tempt others i would suggest no one tries to get in here unless with a skilled person with the correct PPE .
Part of the Urbex buzz is your doing something you should not !!! It was fun getting caught , the dog well i showed no fear thats the worst thing anyone can do a beautuful dog for sure , so glad Molly was not with me , oh and said sorry to the guard .Who did not call the police but as we were leaving could hear police sirens :-)

Gotta love a shot pretty much straight out of camera, just a little sharpening. Took this on the way to work this morning. The wind was blowing and it was waaaay colder than I liked. My eyes were watering from the wind and I was concerned with getting a decent long exposure despite the wind buffeting around me. I tried to stand in front of the tripod and put the weight of my hand on it, hoping to keep it steady. One thirty second exposure was enough for me, in this cooold wind, after just waking up, crawling out of a warm bed, and HI HO,HI HO 'ing off to work. Usually when I get to the marina,on the way to work, I just sit in my van, eat my oatmeal, listen to morning radio, and scope out the vista, wondering if there's anything outside the windshield worth the "getting out and setting up". Today it seemed worth it. Just one shot though.

Los Haitises Parke Nazionla, hantxe burutu dogu aurtengo expedizioa, 24 kobazulotik gora miatu ta petroglifo ta piktografia berri asko katalogatzeko aukera izan dogu. Horretaz aparte kobazuloen topografia eta hidrologia lanak etekin ederrak ekarri doskuez. Gaurtik aurrera hantxe ateratako argazkiak ikusi ahal izango gozuez, nahiz eta hori ez izan expedizioaren helburua.
Parque Nacional Los Haitises, lugar de la expedición de este año, hemos investigado más de 24 cavidades y hemos podido catalogar muchas nuevas pictografías y petroglifos. Además los trabajos de topografía e hidrologia han aportado muchos y buenos resultados. A partir de hoy, podreis ver las fotos, a pesar de no ser el objetivo de la expedición.
Los Haitises National Park, More than 24 caves investigated and topographiated in this years expedition. New pictographys and petrogliphs catalogated, and some photographs, thak i will put in my gallery.

Pada hari Sabtu, 07 Agustus 2010, Sekolah Tinggi Perikanan melantik 327 wisudawan dari enam program studi, yakni Teknologi Penangkapan Ikan, Permesinan Perikanan, Teknologi Pengolahan Hasil Perikanan, Akuakultur, Teknologi Pengelolaan Sumberdaya Perairan, dan Penyuluhan Perikanan.
Ketua STP, Dr. Aef Permadi, S.Pi, M.Si menyebutkan bahwa hingga sekarang STP telah menghasilkan 7749 lulusan yang bekerja di dalam maupun luar negeri. Di antara Sarjana Sains Terapan Perikanan yang diwisuda rencananya akan direkrut oleh perusahaan-perusahaan perikanan, seperti PT Ocean Mitramas dan PT Marindo. Saat ini STP membuka enam program studi yaitu Teknologi Penangkapan Ikan (TPI), Permesinan Perikanan (MP), Teknologi Pengolahan Hasil Perikanan (TPH), Teknologi Akuakultur (TAK), Teknologi Pengelolaan Sumberdaya Perairan (TPS), dan Penyuluhan Perikanan (PP) bagi para taruna yang berasal dari lulusan Sekolah Lanjutan Tingkat Atas baik umum maupun kejuruan, termasuk yang telah menjadi Pegawai Negeri Sipil. Biaya selama pendidikan, seperti asrama, konsumsi, perkuliahan, dan praktikum, sebagian besar ditanggung oleh Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan.

Escurridizo y ágil como un pez, así es el ciliado Chaenea que puede pasar de trucha a anguila en un instante mientras se retuerce y estira gozosamente en el agua. Chaenea siempre se mueve veloz, pero parece disfrutar como si no tuviera prisa y deslizándose de aquí para allá va reconociendo, palmo a palmo, cualquier rincón del agua en el que pueda encontrar lo que tanto parece gustarle: minúsculas algas verdes que le sirven de alimento.
Pero las apetencias de Chaenea no parecen quedarse sólo en el verde y fresco alimento que le proporcionan las algas y de apacible herbívoro puede pasar a convertirse en un voraz depredador de otros ciliados más pequeños que él. Es el pez grande que se come al chico y así, Chaenea vorax , ha sido utilizado en experimentos de ecología, haciéndole representar el papel de depredador sobre el pequeño ciliado Cyclidium
El cuerpo de Chaenea es alargado, muy variable en tamaño y flexible. Puede llegar a medir de 100 a180 micras de longitud y está recubierto por una fina película que fácilmente se deforma. Los cilios, densamente dispuestos, siguen un patrón helicoidal que dan a la superfice de Chaenea un aspecto escamoso. La porción anterior de su cuerpo es algo afilada y remata en diez u once cilios más gruesos que constituyen su principal aparato locomotor.
En su interior Chaenea presenta un citoplasma hialino con numerosos gránulos globulares y una gran vacuola contráctil, situada en la parte posterior.
Escurridizo y solitario, este ciliado no es muy común y por ello es relativemente difícil encontrarlo. Son muy escasos los registros fotográficos que existen de él. Estos días de atrás tuvimos la suerte de encontralo retozando en una gota de agua procedente de las lagunas salobres de Peñíscola (Castellón) y mientras nadaba como un pez pudimos fotografiarlo a 400 aumentos empleando la técnica de contraste de interferencia.

At the end of the 19th century, Albert Gaudry, holder of the chair of palaeontology and a promoter of evolutionist ideas in France, undertook to present Paris with a new institution dedicated to comparative anatomy and palaeontology. "If", he said, "man is unable to read the future, this indeed being one of the greatest challenges of his destiny, then he should attempt to read his past".

His health failing, Patrick Henry retired to Red Hill in 1793. Though he met with clients seeking advice in this office, even the county circuit court was too much for the nearly 60 year-old patriot. This office also housed guests and visiting family, acted as a classroom for the men who studied law under Henry, and provided Henry with a place to meditate during the day. This view can be seen as one returns from the small cemetery on the grounds; it is fun to imagine the passionate Henry sitting on a bench similarly situated beneath the tree, gazing out over the vegetable garden, perhaps playing his violin, perusing the latest news, or chatting with one of his beloved grandchildren.
In 1919, Henry's great-granddaughter, Lucy Henry Harrison, moved into the office and turned it into her home after Henry's house (which had been enlarged into a mansion) burned to the ground. She lived there until her death. It was Lucy who sold Red Hill to the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation in 1944, to ensure the preservation of Henry's last but beloved home, to say nothing of his memory. This is the only national memorial to Patrick Henry we have, other than the echo of his words, which still ring down to us through the years.
