A Manila tambol aparador / armoire
Estimate: PHP 1,200,000 - 1,300,000
2nd Quarter, 19th century
Manila
Narra and kamagong wood, bone, kamagong and lanite inlays, silver mounts
196 x 125 x 51.5 cm (77 x 49 x 20 in)
Kamagong wood was very scarce and expensive even over 170 years ago. Artisans would combine it with narra wood not only for those restrictive reasons but also to create an attractive and contrasting color effect. Originally made in Manila, this style subsequently spawned several variations – from Bulacan and Ilocos in the north to Laguna in the south – each with vernacular modifications. However, only the wealthiest who could afford such luxury furniture had them in their homes.
Classical Greek, Roman and Egyptian motifs are clearly evident, aside from the contrasting wood color of the dark kamagong frame and honey-brown narra centers that became de rigueur again in the early 19th century. The top frieze is inlaid on three sides, with scrolling leaves and flowers centering a large honeysuckle flower. The effect of using big-sized and light brown-colored lanite inlays against dark kamagong background is reminiscent of the oyster veneer, a decorative technique popular in England in the 17th century. The half-round pilaster columns, inlaid border inlays on the doors, the large foliated flower on the beaded apron, and the lotiform feet have been masterly executed. Opening the doors with turned kamagong pulls with silver centers and a spade-shaped silver escutcheon reveals four shelves and four drawers with knob pulls. This type of aparador remains scarce and highly desirable.

A 60-foot granite monument, dedicated in 1932, is perched atop 90-foot-tall Kill Devil Hill, North Carolina commemorating the achievement of the Wright brothers. They conducted many of their glider tests on the massive shifting dune that was later stabilized to form Kill Devil Hill. Inscribed in capital letters along the base of the memorial tower is the phrase "In commemoration of the conquest of the air by the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright conceived by genius achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith." Atop the tower is a marine beacon, similar to one found in a lighthouse, that was installed to make the monument more "functional".
The tower was designed by Rodgers and Poor, a New York architectural firm; the design was officially selected on February 14, 1930. Prior to the memorial's construction, the War Department selected Captain William H. Kindervater of the Quartermaster Corps to prepare the site for construction and to manage the area landscaping. To secure the sandy foundation, Captain Kindervater selected bermuda grass to be planted on Kill Devil Hill and the surrounding area. He also ordered a special fertilizer to be spread throughout the area to promote grass and shrubbery growth and decided to build a fence to prevent animal grazing. With a strong foundation in place, the Office of the Quartermaster selected Marine Captain John A. Gilman to preside over the construction project. Construction began in October 1931 and with a budget of $213,000, the memorial was completed in November 1932. In the end, 1,200 tons of granite, more than 2,000 tons of gravel, more than 800 tons of sand and almost 400 tons of cement were used to build the structure, along with numerous other materials.

The Black Drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus), also known as the King Crow, is a small Asian passerine bird of the drongo family Dicruridae. Is a wholly black bird with a distinctive forked tail and measures 28 cm (11 in) in length. It feeds on insects and is common in open agricultural areas and light forest perching conspicuously on a bare perch.
The bird is a common resident breeder in much of tropical southern Asia from southwest Iran through India and Sri Lanka east to southern China and Indonesia.
This species is famous for its aggressive behaviour towards much larger birds, such as crows, never hesitating to dive-bomb any birds of prey that invades its territory. Smaller birds often nest in the well guarded vicinity of a nesting Black Drongo.

The Colon Cemetery or more fully in the Spanish language Cementerio de Cristóbal Colón was founded in 1876 in the Vedado neighbourhood of Havana, Cuba on top of Espada Cemetery. Named for Christopher Columbus, the 140 acre (57 ha) cemetery is noted for its many elaborately sculpted memorials. It is estimated that today the cemetery has more than 500 major mausoleums, chapels, and family vaults
Matthew 6:25-34 (King James Version)
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Will: Why shouldn't I work for the N.S.A.? That's a tough one, but I'll take a shot. Say I'm working at N.S.A. Somebody puts a code on my desk, something nobody else can break. Maybe I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I'm real happy with myself, 'cause I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East. Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels were hiding and fifteen hundred people I never met, never had no problem with, get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', "Oh, send in the Marines to secure the area" 'cause they don't give a shit. It won't be their kid over there, gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number got called, 'cause they were pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be some kid from Southie takin' shrapnel in the ass. And he comes back to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, 'cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile, he realizes the only reason he was over there in the first place was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And, of course, the oil companies used the skirmish over there to scare up domestic oil prices. A cute little ancillary benefit for them, but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. And they're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, of course, and maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and fuckin' play slalom with the icebergs, and it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So now my buddy's out of work and he can't afford to drive, so he's got to walk to the fuckin' job interviews, which sucks 'cause the shrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic hemorrhoids. And meanwhile he's starvin', 'cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat, the only blue plate special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State. So what did I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. I figure fuck it, while I'm at it why not just shoot my buddy, take his job, give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected president....

"Tutti in coperta, ci siamo disincagliati!" sentii gridare il capitano
"Esplorate la nave, sostituite il cuoco: che nessuno sopravviva!"
Attraverso gli stretti, intorno a Capo Horn: fin dove possono fuggire i marinai?
Un sentiero difficile, una strada tormentata, e nessun sopravvissuto
Partimmo per luoghi sconosciuti all'uomo, dove le navi vanno a morire
Nessuna vetta elevata,
Listen Spirit of the sea - BlackMore's Night
I took a walk along the shore
To clear my mind about the day,
I saw a man I´d seen before
As I approached he slipped away...
I knew his face from years ago,
His smile stays with me ever more
His eyes, they guide me through the haze
And give me shelter from the storm...
As I walk I can feel him,
Always watching over me...
His voice surrounds me,
My Spirit of the Sea...
He went away so long ago,
[ Letras de Canciones encontraron en es.mp3lyrics.org/vI3 ]
On a maiden voyage far away
A young man then I did not know,
His life was taken that same day...
And it was almost like he knew
He wouldn´t see me anymore
He looked so deeply in my eyes, and said
"Wait for me along the shore..."
And so I come most every day,
To watch the waves rise and fall,
And as I sit here on the sand,
This ocean makes me feel so small...
But I feel my lover by my side,
And he makes me follow my own heart
We´ll be together some sweet day
When that day comes we´ll never part...
When that day comes we´ll never part...
Wait for me along the shore...
Blackmore's Night is a Renaissance-inspired folk rock band led by Ritchie Blackmore (electric guitar and acoustic guitar) and Candice Night (lyricist and lead vocals).
The origins of the band lie in 1990 when Candice Night was working at a local New York rock music radio station. She first encountered Ritchie Blackmore, then with Deep Purple, at a soccer game in which he was playing. The two became romantically involved and discovered that they shared a passionate interest in the Renaissance.
After leaving Deep Purple in 1993 and recording the album Stranger in Us All in 1995, on which Night contributed backing vocals and some of the lyrics, Blackmore became interested in the idea of bringing Renaissance music to a contemporary audience. Night's personality and singing ability made her the natural choice as "frontwoman." In 1997 the pair were ready to launch the band, the name being a pun of their own names, and which would consist of themselves plus session musicians.
Their debut album Shadow of the Moon was an instant success, particularly in Europe. In subsequent albums, particularly Fires at Midnight, there was an increased incorporation of rock guitar into the music, whilst maintaining a folk rock direction. Over time, Candice Night has increasingly participated instrumentally as well as singing the vocals, and is competent in a wide variety of Renaissance instruments.
The group performs at Renaissance fairs and Renaissance Festivals, as well as in stand-alone concert tours in appropriate venues including 'castle tours' of Europe, where they perform in historic surroundings for an audience dressed largely in period costume. The band has been successful enough to inspire a number of international tribute bands including: Renaissance Night and the Italian Morning Star.
They have also performed the music for MagiQuest, a live simulation game located internationally. In 2006, Candice performed a duet with Andi Deris on Helloween's "Light The Universe", which was released as a single in certain countries and is available on their album Keeper Of The Seven Keys - The Legacy, released in the same year. A new album is due to release in June 2008, called Secret Voyage.

Today is the first day of the story, so here goes.

Snap
By Garrison Smith
Day One [September 25, 2009]
"Today, I will be starting a story--a thriller. Perhaps you will start reading it and perhaps you'll like it. Perhaps I might continue the story. Perhaps not. Perhaps I should start typing the short story that I just finished telling you I was going to write. Perhaps not. Perhaps I like to use the word perhaps. And perhaps I'm only using the word to annoy you, and perhaps it is."
He tapped at the keyboard with surprising speed. click click click. He had taken a course in typing two years before and it was proving beneficial now. He had no idea what he was typing, but only that he was. He glanced to his left, eying the bright red numbers that stared him in the face. 1:10 pm. It was Wednesday afternoon and a slight breeze whisked through the red and orange leaves on the trees just outside his bedroom window. A typical autumn day, to be sure.
But he would soon discover that all was not typical, and all was not as it seemed.
He leaned back in his chair, and, closing his eyes, searched for words. Finding them, he leaned forward and began punching at the keyboard. "Perhaps I should get up and get a drink, but my thirst is not one to be quenched by water, not satisfied by a cola." He pushed his chair out from underneath him as he stood. He looked around. His room was a mess to end all messes, literally. No one could mess a room like he did, yet he cleaned it regularly. He ran his fingers through his short-cropped brown hair. Perhaps he would continue his typing later--perhaps not.
A knock on the door sent him down the hall and into the dimly-lit living room. He wasn't expecting anybody. For being recently graduated from college, he had a decent place. Landing himself a job at a local newspaper as a journalist helped with the income, and when he was short, his parents provided. His life was going smoothly, as far as he knew.
He swung open the large mock-cherrywood door and with a skeptical look on his face, greeted the delivery man. The package was addressed to Michael Hall. Not the photographer or painter, but himself. He wished he was widely known, but his talent left him writing for a local newspaper. He closed the door as the UPS man left. He grabbed a knife and opened the package cautiously. It was ironic; he'd be using a knife more in the next few days than he had ever done in his lifetime.
He pulled at the packaging peanuts and retrieved a cell phone. 'How cliche', he thought. The second the thought left his mind, the phone chirped to life. Michael jerked, startled by the volume level.
He put the receiver to his ear, "Hello?"
05/15/2010:
My son and I were at the campground all day yesterday with our cub scout pack, and by the time we got home, got showered and unpacked, I was too tired to go through pictures.
This was only the 2nd photo I took that day, but one of my favorites since it perfectly captured how the rest of day went. I remember when I used to have that much energy, the kind that lasted all day long without the need for caffeine or energy drinks.

The Scene
Two sundays ago, we went for brunch at Privé Bakery & Café at the Keppel Bay Marina, off HarbourFront. It is a charming little place, with its own marina and some good (but expensive) restaurants. To get there, you will have to turn into an inconspicuous road, and then cross a long bridge.
There are a couple of restaurants, one of which is the Privé Bakery & Café. The food was good, the company was good, and it will have been perfect but for the stupid cold that was making me drowsy and sick at the same time!
The Shot
I did bring my super-duper ultra-wide-angle lens along with me. However, save for this shot, all my shots of the marina, skyline, boats etc. turned out pretty sh**e. I now realize how difficult it is to have good composition in a place like a marina... respect to those who have mastered it...!
Anyways, this shot turned out pretty decent. The unique architecture stood out. I took this in AEB mode on tripod.
The Processing
Processing this shot was an absolute nightmare. First up was the HDR of the three shots using Photomatix. The HDR turned out really good (thanks to the people sitting there who did not move for any of the three shots :o)
The only problems were the flags The HDR showed up three flags for each one (called ghosting). So, i literally spent one week cleaning up the flag.
The technique is standard HDR cleaning (available for free in my websites). You will have choose the best shot of the flags. Then adjust the brightness, curves etc. of the single image to as close to the HDR as possible. And then use a layer mask and start painting the HDR to reveal the "good" flags. The only problem was that i was trying to do all this on my macbook trackpad. Not easy...
After the clean-up, as usual, i adjusted the brightness, saturation etc to get the best possible effect.
You
As usual, pls leave any comments you have. I will be grateful for any tips that you may offer to make this better...
Have a great weekend!!!

Thaipusam actually celebrates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this occasion, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. It is a time for making and fulfilling vows. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows.
To do this, a devotee would pierce his cheeks, tongue, face or other suitable body parts with sharp objects. Next his friends or relatives load a *kavadi on his shoulder. Finally, in a trance-like manner, he goes on a 4km journey of faith.
Others, including young children, might join the procession carrying only milk pots. The Thaipusam Singapore procession starts at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon Road and ends at the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank Road.
At first look, one might think that the festival starts at one temple and ends at another. Not so. Many of the devotees start fasting a month before the Thaipusam Singapore festivities. Others fast a week. Yet others three days.
A Hindu friend said this to me, "If you are going to put a 12-inch skewer through your cheeks and a hundred spikes in your chest, you'd better take your fast seriously!"
* A kavadi is a cage-like structure carried by devotees during the Thaipusam Festival.
It is traditionally decorated with peacock feathers and aluminium plates which show images of Hindu deities. Sharp spikes criss-cross its lower section.
An elaborate kavadi might weigh up to 15kg! It is quite something just to lift it. But these chaps I saw actually walked with them for 4km - kavadis, skewers, hooks, spikes and all!
Some of them even skipped and danced with their kavadis. Either they have great endurance or they have some supernatural help.

NYC IxDA - The 7-Minute IxD Soapbox (a.k.a. Pecha Kucha)
2007-11-13 / Method / SoHo, NYC
At this fast-paced event, we're giving seven people a chance to share their ideas — for just seven minutes each. The only rule is that topic must relate to interaction design. Of course, if you simply prefer to take it all in, you're welcome to participate as an audience member.
TOPICS
Anything goes, as long as it's related to interaction design or user experience. Present some of your work; talk about a design problem you're facing; rant about a device you don't like; effuse about your favorite product; share some results from a usability test; question the value of market research in product development; relate an experience with redesigning a product. If you don't want to soapbox alone pair up with a friend or colleague. Heck, you could even do a parody of your favorite IxD guru, if you're so inclined! If it's something you're interested in, chances are very high we're interested too.
GOAL
To connect people in our diverse and powerful community who are interested in having their interaction design neurons stimulated. This event will be an extraordinary grab-bag of local voices. Practice your speaking and presenting skills! Spark some debate! Make new friends and enemies! Gain new insights!
FORMAT
Speakers may use presentation slides, show off short multimedia, demonstrate something online, or just shoot from the hip. Just make sure it's 7 minutes and no longer. After the seven soaps, we'll hold Q&A and/or discussion. Caveat: Nomenclature debates about our roles and what we call ourselves as practitioners (IA, UX, IxD, HCI, CHI, UCD, etc.) will be reserved for anyone wishing to go to the nearest pub after the event.

Hastings is a town and Borough on the coast of East Sussex in England. It includes originally separate settlements, as well as the inevitable growth of the town through the building of new estates.
In historical terms, Hastings can claim fame through its connection with the Norman conquest of England; and also because it became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. Hastings was, for centuries, an important fishing port; although much reduced, it has the largest beach-based fishing fleet in England. As with many other such places, the town became a watering place in the 1760s, and then, with the coming of the railway, a seaside resort.
The Net Huts - These tarred and weatherboarded structures date from the 17th century, before the Stade developed. At this time, there was nowhere to spread the nets to dry so they were made as tall as possible to give Fisherman enough space. Restored with a Heritage Lottery Grant, they're now one of the town's most historic landmarks.
The Stade - The stretch of shingle beach from which the fishing fleet launches has been known as 'The Stade' (the Saxon term for 'landing place') for over a thousand years.

The dunes were formed from sand deposits of the Rio Grande and its tributaries, flowing through the San Luis Valley. Over the ages, westerly winds picked up sand particles from the river flood plain. As the wind lost power before crossing the Sangre de Cristo Range, the sand was deposited on the east edge of the valley. This process continues, and the dunes are slowly growing. The wind changes the shape of the dunes daily.
There are several streams flowing on the perimeter of the dunes. The streams erode the edge of the dune field, and sand is carried downstream. The water disappears into the ground, depositing sand on the surface. Winds pick up the deposits of sand, and blow them up onto the dune field once again.
Digging a few inches into the dunes even at their peaks reveals wet sand. If the streams were to dry up, the dunes would disappear; in fact part of the motivation of turning the Monument into a National Park was the extra protection of the water, which Colorado's cities and agriculture covet. -Wikipedia
Though it looks small, George Mason's home is quite spacious inside. One of my favourite features was the beautiful center passage or hallway; the front and back doors are, as was common in this style of home, directly across from each other. When both doors were opened, not only was the broad center hallway between the doors cooled, fresh, cool air circulated through the other rooms in the house as well. Functionality aside, though, it is a lovely thing, the main hall.
By the way, Mason, his architect, and his groundsmen did a divine job of designing the home in coordination with the grounds. For one thing, the house was meant to stand alone, with no mature trees growing near it; according to the website, "Mason meant it to be seen standing isolated in space". The black-heart cherry tree-lined drive lead your eyes to the home along a twelve-foot-wide carriage drive; the Palladian portico you see is also twelve feet wide, as is Gunston Hall's aforementioned center passage. The rear, riverfront portico is twelve feet wide, as is the gravel path through the center of the rear garden leading toward the south and the Potomac river. The effect is quite beautiful.
The small building you see on the left side of the frame is the kitchen. The location was interesting to me, because to get to the dining room, slaves would bring the food into the hallway from the kitchen yard (there is a door and hallway leading from the center passage to the kitchen yard), past the Mr. and Mrs. Mason's bedroom on one side and the informal family dining/sitting room on the other, across the great hall, and into the dining room. Weird.

Patricia Cori : Before We Leave You
Messages from the Great Whales and the Dolphin Beings - - 2011, North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, California
Book Description:
What if whales and dolphins truly do have a superior intellect, as many believe, and can speak to the human race? What would their message be? In November 2008, gifted clairvoyant Patricia Cori was in Jordan teaching a workshop when a life-changing event occurred. A community of Cetaceans—“a choir of whales and dolphins,” as she describes it—interrupted her talk with a frantic plea for help. Cori was suddenly witness to a devastating scene of suffering, a communal grieving of scores of whales and dolphins “frenzied, lost, and dying.” This was the first of several terrifying calls for help, all of which were immediately followed by mass suicide events as these majestic creatures collectively chose to leave us and our planet.
These troubling incidents evolved into the stream of messages for humanity that Cori reveals in this extremely timely work. The whales and dolphins present their deep understanding of our urgent global situation, calling for the human race to restore balance to our ecosystems—especially our dying oceans. For the first time, we read the communications of the Cetaceans and their story of devotion and celebration of life on the Great Planet Earth. We are also given a glimpse of their role in the unfolding of galactic events throughout our solar system, and the message is clear: We must wake up and realize that our continued abuse of the environment is altering the course of Gaia’s progression to the next dimension. Without the whale and dolphin song—without these musicians who hold the oceans in balance—we risk our advancement through the ascension process for which our entire solar system is destined. Before We Leave You is a roadmap to that higher future and a pathway to global transformation.
