Brittany is a hair stylist at Genesis Salon in Suwanee, GA, a good buddy of mine and the first person to have cut my hair in over a year and a half (just doing it myself until recently). This was shot in her salon of employ in a series I'm doing on people in they're workplace environment.

She is a phenomenal hairstylist with the example of expertise spreading throughout our certain crowd of friends, as well as an aspiring videographer interning with the company "Point. Click. Shoot."

Check her photostream here: Brittany Loraine Crawford

I seriously owe her one. My hair looks sick!

Its incredible how FAST the butterflies are.. Shot at 1/750s and still the motion blur...this is not camera shake (evident with the bottom left flower sharpness!)

WOW.. getting motion blur at such speed just shows how the butterflies take off and why its so hard to photograph them IN-FLIGHT!

I tried to catch the butterflies in flight literally dozens of times during this vacation... but this is the only one i have with me to showcase!

Originally shot for COG Magazine, this shot appears in the Vol. 1 Photo Annual. Photographing cycling is something I enjoy more and more as time goes on, as it is a wonderful way to combine two things I love, and I am very thankful for the opportunity to be involved with the magazine and all of the wonderful people I've met through photography and cycling alike.

www.cornwallinfocus.co.uk/mining/levant.php

Levant Mine is located 2 miles north of St.Just and is bounded to the east by Geevor Mine, to the west by Wheal Unity and to the south by Spearn Moor and Spearn Consols mines. Levant appears as a mine in its own right on maps dating from 1748 on and consists of an amalgamation of several smaller and more ancient concerns. Their names such as Boscregan and Unity live on as shaft names. What we would consider today as modern Levant was formed in about 1820 by a group of investors - known in the trade as 'mining adventurers', who agreed to raise the sum of £400 by purchasing 80 shares at £5 each.

Two of the main investors in the company were Lewis Charles Daubuz and Mr John Batten. Their leadership along with some excellent prospecting helped the company to locate a large copper deposit at a depth of 20 fathoms (120 feet) below the surface. The adventurers rapidly got a handsome return on their investment and further exploratory work was carried out. From 1835 Levant began raising tin and was soon to become an important tin producer too. In the period 1820 to 1930 Levant produced over 130,000 tons of copper ore of high (10%) grade and 24,000 tons of black tin. In 1912 5,278 ounces of silver and 4 ounces of gold were also sold.

Levant swallowed up the nearby mine of Spearne Consols - now known as Higher Bal. Shafts were opened up at Angwin's shaft, Tresize's shaft, Goldsworthy's shaft and Batten's shaft. The underground workings of Levant extended out under the sea but in general due to the bedrock being the impervious greenstone there were very few problems with flooding.

A 'man engine' was installed on Daubuz's shaft in 1856 reached by a tunnel from the Miner's Dry. The shaft subsequently became known as engine Shaft one of only a dozen or so installed in Cornish mines. The journey time from surface to work place was radically reduced from over an hour to less than half an hour in most cases. The workers arriving fresher and more ready for work into the bargain. Along with all the new shafts and the installation of the man engine all the usual associated surface buildings sprang up around the site - stamps, both Cornish stamps and Californian stamps types; a calciner for roasting the ore and a mill area containing rag frames and buddles.

Levant is quite unusual amongst Cornish mines in one respect as it did use pit ponies for a short time from 1893 to tram the ore on the main 278 fathom (below adit) tramming level some 1600 feet underground. Levant is also remembered for the Levant Mine Disaster in October 1919. The second worst loss of life underground in a Cornish mine. 31 men were lost when the man engine snapped and fell down through the shaft.

coi suoi modelli, i gran tatuaggi e i vari anelli

On black

Registration Number: Belgian Registered

Chassis Number: 9306700153

Introduced in 1976 for competition in Group 4 GT, the Porsche 934 and its subsequent derivative the Porsche 935 represent the most successful and important of all sports-racing and GT cars produced during the exciting times of the mid to late 1970s. It was these fantastically advanced, yet typically reliable machines which took the motorsport reputation of Porsche, already at a very high level, to one of total world dominance. A position in sports car racing they are yet to relinquish.

One of only 31 built, this genuine matching 934 RSR Turbo is indeed an extremely rare specimen. Chassis 9306700153 is listed and described in Jürgen Barth's and Bernd Dobronz's book “Porsche - 934/935” on pages 61, 285 and 286 as being the 17th car built.

Its first owner; Jean Blaton bought this 934 from the Porsche works just prior to the Le Mans 24h race in 1976 and resprayed it from its original yellow livery (in which the car presents itself today) to white.

Starting at Le Mans in 1976 with the drivers Nick Faure and John Goss, the car did not finish the race due to problems with the turbocharger. Subsequently Blaton sold the car to well known NSU and Porsche tuner Jean-Pierre Gaban and on 23rd May 1978, Willy Braillard won the Grand Prix of Zolder against John Lagodny and Claude Bourgoignie, both competing in 935 Porsches.

J.P. Gaban kept the car until 1982 and Braillard twice scored 2nd places on 4th September 1977 as well as on 24th September 1977 in Zolder. Braillard was also successful in winning on 7th June 1978 on the 600kms of Spa. The car was then sold to the Vermeulen brothers who in turn sold it to long term owner Walter Pauwels, from him it came to its current owner who restored the car and rebuilt it back to its livery in yellow as delivered by the works back in 1976.

Today the car presents itself in superb condition and its engine and turbo charger was recently on a dyno, reading over 400hp at a boost pressure of only 0.8 Bar (over 500hp at 1.3 Bar). This is indeed one of the ultra rare (1 of 31 built) Porsche 934 RSR Turbos with documented period race history, FIA papers and race ready.

This represents a marvellous opportunity for a Porsche collector to purchase one of the most significant survivors from this important period or for a historic racer to return this car to the tracks. In this vein this is a car that is ideal for historic racing, both here on the continent and in the USA. In these events, it would surely dominate as it did so gloriously during the late 1970's.

Senza saper dove andare e respirare a malapena

'Writing Spider (Argiope aurantia)' On Black

From: home.att.net/~larvalbugrex/argiope.html

Argiope

by Valerie (October 25, 2001)

revised September 23, 2004

The largest orb weaver in our gardens is the black and yellow argiope (Argiope aurantia). Actually, only the female is large, the males being much smaller by comparison. Although big enough to deliver a bite, these spiders are not poisonous or aggressive. The black and yellow argiope is also called banana spider, yellow garden spider, zipper spider, golden orb weaver and writing spider. There are a number of other species in the genus Argiope, but most that occur in the U.S. are restricted to tropical climates. A related species inhabits gardens in Europe. Because they make such big webs and are brightly colored, it is impossible for a resident argiope to remain unnoticed in the garden or, as they sometimes look for sheltered areas, on the side of a house. We had one spider who thought the ideal location for her web was right by our front door over the doorbell. She stayed there all summer, enjoying frequent feedings of any large insects we could find to throw into her web.

The argiope spiders make excellent photography subjects because they don't react to the camera lens. Part of the reason is probably their rather poor vision, as they do not rely on sight to catch prey, but on the vibrations produced in their webs. Smaller orb weavers, like members of the genus Araneus, which also inhabit our yard, sometimes make webs even bigger than the argiopes, but they are very difficult to photograph. Maybe because they are small and tasty morsels for birds, these spiders do not sit in the middle of their web during the day, but usually hide in a nearby leaf at the base of one of the web support strands. If they happen to be in the middle of the web, my approach with the camera almost always makes them retreat to a safe hiding place. In spite of their large size and the care with which they place their webs, the argiope spiders in our yard are often taken by predators such as birds.

An interesting feature of many orb webs is the central white design created by the spider, called a stabilimentum (referring to the idea that it helps stabilize the web). With argiopes, this area is almost round and filled in with many zigzags of silk when the spider is young, but as it grows, the design changes to be more of a single vertical zigzag. Spiders are capable of creating as many as seven different kinds of silk using several different glands that supply the spinnerets. argiope spider hanging under its recently shed exoskeletonThe photo at left shows the underside of an adult female argiope. The spinnerets appear as a group of brown structures forming an irregular shaped disk. The different types of silk have varying amino acid compositions. The silk coming out of the spinnerets can vary from an extremely fine single line, like those used to create the main support lines on their web, to wide ribbons of silk used for subduing prey or making the central design on their web. Spiders can vary the stickiness of the silk as well as it's thickness. The purpose of the central design in many spiders' webs is not completely understood. It could serve several purposes, including a way to conceal the spider from its prey or its predators (which could explain why the patch is more disruptive for small, young spiders than for large ones), a way to keep birds from blundering into the web, or a lure for insects, as the silk reflects ultraviolet light in much the same way as do flower centers. Another spider habit that has never been fully explained is that of hanging upside down in the web. Almost all spiders do this but I've never heard a definitive explanation.

In order to grow, spiders must periodically shed their exoskeletons. This is a fascinating process to watch, but one which leaves the spider very vulnerable until its new skin hardens. When the spider is about to shed, the inside layers of its skin are digested. It anchors its legs on part of its web, hanging upside down. The top of the carapace splits open and the spider literally falls out of its old shell. It doesn't fall because it is anchored by a strand of silk from its spinnerets. As soon as the spider is completely free of its old skin, it hangs limp for awhile, then spreads its legs out to let them dry.female argiope spider just before laying eggs In the photograph above at right, the old skin is visible at the top, while the spider hangs below. At this point the spider is expanding its size, and it can even grow a new limb if one was lost before.

The females are easy to spot in their webs, but the males (photo at right) tend to be harder to find. When they are young, both the males and females look similar, but the males seem to never grow much, while the females become quite large. The males also do not remain in their original area if there is no female around. Once they mature, they must search out a female with whom to mate. Often, it is possible to find the tiny males living in their small webs just to the side of a female's large web. While both genders of argiopes have the habit of holding their legs in an X pattern, the males seem to make the posture more pronounced, possibly as an aid to their protective camouflage.

Just before laying eggs, the female spider is often quite large, her abdomen considerably distended. Argiopes produce large numbers of young in their egg sacs. argiope egg caseAlthough one sac seems to be the norm, we saw one female produce three over a period of a couple of weeks and have heard of a single spider producing four and still going strong. Unlike some spiders, such as the green lynx, who guard their eggs and young, argiopes tend to leave their eggs to their fate. The egg case looks like a miniature Greek wine vessel, with a bulbous shape and a little round neck at the top. The color of the egg case is brown and it is anchored within a framework of silk strands, keeping it away from surrounding vegetation. Although this protects the case from some predators, like ants, other predators and parasites lay their eggs within the cases as well. These tenants include other species of spiders as well as wasps. The young spiders hatch in the fall but overwinter in the egg case. These cases are very well constructed and we've seen them last not only through the winter, but through another year as well, before the weather eventually takes its toll and they are washed away.

Like many spiders, argiopes live only one year, expending all their energy into producing eggs (females) or sperm (males). They die once winter arrives.

Bowl of fresh sliced limes, enhanced with the Photoshop "cut out" filter and increased contrast and color saturation.

INFORMATION ON THE LIME:

Lime is a term referring to a number of different fruits (generally citruses), both species and hybrids, which are typically round, green to yellow in color, 3–6 cm in diameter, generally containing sour pulp, and frequently associated with the lemon. Limes are often used to accent the flavors of foods and beverages. They are usually smaller than lemons, and a great source of vitamin C.

In cooking, lime is valued both for the acidity of its juice and the floral aroma of its zest. It is used in Key lime pie, a traditional Florida dessert, and is a very common ingredient in authentic Mexican, Southwestern United States and Thai dishes. It is also used for its pickling properties in ceviche. Additionally, the leaves of lime are used in southeast Asian cuisine. The use of dried limes (called black lime or loomi) as a flavouring is typical of Persian cuisine and Iraqi cuisine, as well as in Gulf-style baharat (a spice mixture that is also called kabsa or kebsa). Limes are also an essential element in Tamil cuisine.

Lime leaves are also an herb in South, East, and particularly Southeast Asia. In Vietnam, people have boiled chicken with lime leaves and a mixture of salt, black pepper and lime juice.

In order to prevent scurvy during the 19th century, British sailors were issued a daily allowance of citrus such as lime (presumably Citrus aurantifolia)[citation needed], which led in time to the nickname "limey" for all Britons. It was later discovered that this beneficial effect derived from the quantities of Vitamin C the fruit contains.

Lime extracts and essential oils are frequently used in perfumes, cleaning products, and aromatherapy.

....

In every 100 steps ? It is a kind of advance, a course, a ballade. It is, while leaving at home, 100 steps after 100 steps (that is to say in all 2400 step and thus 24 sights) photographs of what was in front of me.

So, every day, during 24 days, on Flickr, on the same place and at the same hour, the picture of previous the day is replaced by a new image.

To keep the track of the past images, they are placed in a message under the image which changes. It is thus necessary to reserve 24 successive places from the dépos of the first image.

This choice of presentation has the effect of showing the messages of the visitors and their comment on the image which was, for them, that of day.

...

Please do :)

INNER WHEEL

Kidderminster Inner Wheel was formed on Thursday October 6th 1942 with 16 members - all wives of Rotarians. The founder President was the first Mrs Eddy, wife of Alderman E. George Eddy, the Rotary Club President before he was knighted. Until mid-1948 the monthly afternoon meetings were held at the the Florence Cafe, then at the Lion Hotel, moving to The Black Horse in September 1949, the initial annual subscription being 10/6d (55 new pence) per annum.

On June 18th 1943 Mrs Granville-Barker, President of No. 6 Inner Wheel District, presented the Charter to President Mrs F. E. Eddy before a gathering which included Presidents and Secretaries from 7 neighbouring Inner Wheel Clubs and goodwill messages from 2 others. The speaker, Mrs Hogg, on this first charter day took as her subject: "The East End of London in Peace and War" - quite a sobering thought nearly 60 years on! Our members now enjoy social gatherings with their Rotarian husbands - whenever they ask us!

Charity Work

The first two charities supported were the "Waifs and Strays" and the boys' home at Weston-Super-Mare displaying educational leadership. Fund raising got off the ground in 1943 with a Bridge Drive and from 1944 onwards members held an Annual Charity Ball. During the first year donations were given to The Red Cross 1-Penny-a-week Fund, Mayor's Red Cross Appeal, RAF Benevolent Fund and Kidderminster General Hospital.

Many other events have been organised over the years, for example the Annual Charity Lunch. One year we had a "Charity Shop" for almost a week. Nowadays monthly coffee mornings (with bring and buy) at members homes form a regular feature on the Club's social and fund raising activities. Each year the incoming President chooses the main charity, the remainder of the money going always to Local charities. A major effort displaying business ethics one year was to buy a "Guide Dog for the Blind".

In June 1946 we entertained about 30 elderly ladies to a coach ride and afternoon tea. These ladies from our business directory were invited back in December to Christmas Dinner when we cut a Christmas cake and presented a gift to each. These two events continued for many years until there was only four ladies who were too old to go out, but they were all visited with a gift at Christmas until they died, the eldest reaching the grand old age of 103 years! Who would deny that her longevity was helped in some small way by the educational leadership and business ethics of The Inner Wheel!

Many years ago two business directory members started to help in the Kidderminster General Hospital's Coffee Shop when it was a tiny building by the "Master's House" (still standing) belonging to the old Workhouse. It was then run by the WRVS. When the building was demolished, the service lay dormant until Lady Eddy instigated the concrete building on the car park. business directory Members then began to work there for The Hospital League of Friends. Today, our business directory members still help on a fortnightly rota as part of our businss ethics.

As Rotarians know, they can always count on our help with their major charity events - like marshalling for the annual sponsored walk, sorting goods for the Bosnian refugees and selling tickets for the trolley-dash, which all requires a part in our educational leadership programmes.

International

We undertake a lot of knitting and sewing every year as part of our business ethics to make garments for children, jumpers and blankets for the Inner Wheel's overseas work. For many years one business directory member collected unwanted medicines and samples from doctor's surgeries for an organisation called "Intercare". We also collect old spectacles and used stamps, and sometimes make toys as part of our educational leadership - all for overseas use. The club was very proud when Past President Betty Russell of our business directory was elected to the District Overseas Committee for three years, this being the only time any business directory member has gone forward to District to promote our business ethics.

Fellowship

For many years the Inner Wheel 'Club' organised an annnual fellowship meeting promoting our business ethics when every Club in District 6 was invited together with District Officers. We had either afternoon tea or dinner, followed by a good speaker.

In 1964 the President and members invited the Rotarians' wives from the newly formed Stourport-on-Severn Club to join us with a view to forming a daughter Club of our business directory. This was so successful that, in October the same year, 24 members were presented with their Charter at the Severn Manor Hotel, the founder President of Stourport-on-Severn Inner Wheel being Mrs Frances Smurd.

In 1976 the President held a coffee evening at her home to try to encourage those Rotarian's wives who went out to work to join Inner Wheel with it's educational leadership and business ethics. This was so successful that coffee evenings continued untill 1978 when evening meetings replaced those at lunchtime.

On October 14th 1992 we invited all the Clubs in District 6, District Officers and our own past members of the business directory who had left the area to join our 50th Birthday celebrations at The Stewpony Hotel. After a wonderful meal, every one received a golden rose and a slice of the beautiful 50th Anniversary cake, cut by founder member Past President Mrs Madge North, who was then 90 years of age.

The Cooktown Orchid has been the floral emblem of Queensland since November 19, 1959. Its scientific name is Dendrobium phalaenopsis, a recently created species after Clements reorganised the Dendrobium bigibbum complex. The old name, Dendrobium bigibbum var. superbum is still recognised as a synonym.

This beautiful but variable orchid occurs in several subspecies. It used to be prolific around Cooktown but is now rare in the wild, due to over-collecting by commercial collectors. The colour of the flowers varies from pinkish-mauve to lavender or purple and sometimes almost white, with the base of the labellum being a much darker purple.

The plants can grow up to 80 cm in height. The flowers are on canes 10-40 cm long.

Flowering time In the dry season - usually between March and July; but sometimes all year in commercial cultivation.

Here is a little before/after of all the Eyes Have Seen the Glory promos I uploaded...

gotta love the 5d + L glass....it enabled me to do most of my editing in Camera Raw (saved me a TON of time!) The only one that gave me trouble was the top photo, before C.R. it was SOOOO dark.

I'll try my best to list what I did:

ACR:

- temp/tint adjustments

- contrast increase

- brightness increase

- minor clarity increase

- highlight/shadow color adjustment

- slight curves adjustment

- noise reduction

Photoshop:

- curves layer for contrast set to luminosity

- dodge and burn the entire photo (this took the longest out of everything I did....especially the top photo)

- more curves for more contrast

- color balance on bottom photo

- more noise reduction

- high pass layer

...I guess the point I was getting at is that the RAW files from the 5d paired with L glass are pretty darn awesome SOOC....and that's such a treat compared to my good ol' d40!

that's it folks! Let me know if you have questions =)

(p.s. - the left ones are NOT SOOC...they are after raw adjustments)

I really, really hope I can make it to Calabogie this year to take some shots of the cars in their natural habitat (the racetrack), but, as with the previous two years (2007 and 2008), I will at least be taking shots of the cars parked on Preston Street on Friday evening, and this time, I will be using all three of my current cameras (Nikon F65 35mm SLR, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LS75 digital camera, and my sister's ancient Fuji DL-8 fixed-lens snapshot camera for "lomo" shots). I will be taking some of the same kinds of shots that I've taken before, but I have a few new ideas so it won't be a complete rerun (same cars, same angles, different years).

That's a 1/24 Maisto "Assembly Line" Ferrari F430 model with the backdrop being the rear left rim of a Ferrari Mondial t. I actually brought the model with me because I wanted to get a shot of it framed by the "arch" at the southern end of Preston Street near Carling Avenue, but, unfortunately, there's extensive excavation work currently underway on Preston Street, so I couldn't get a clean shot of the arch without a bunch of construction fencing in the way.

By the way, this shot is a blatant self-conscious rip-off of this shot I took in Montreal in June 2001 of my 1/18 scale Mattel 100% Hot Wheels Ferrari F355 model photographed against a rim (which looks like it was another Mondial t).

While Florida targets Black history, Texas Republicans plan to make life miserable for Asian Americans

Spy fears spark flurry of proposed laws aiming to ban Chinese land ownership

Critics say the proposals hark back to racist laws from the early 1900s preventing Asian Americans from becoming property owners.

www.cnn.com/2023/02/18/politics/chinese-land-law-texas-vi...

History repeats itself with anti-China land ownership proposals

February 18, 2023

(CNN) New efforts to bar Chinese citizens and others from owning property in Texas and other states echo the treatment of Asian people in the US more than 100 years ago, when Congress barred them from obtaining citizenship and multiple state laws restricted land ownership.

▫️ In Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin is expected to sign legislation to bar citizens of countries the State Department has designated as "foreign adversaries" from owning agricultural land. Companies with deep ties to those countries would also be affected. Those countries currently include China, Russia, North Korea and Iran. There are similar proposals in Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota. Foreign owners control a fraction of US farmland, according to the Congressional Research Service.

▫️ In Texas, a much broader proposal names those countries and bans citizens of them from owning any land whatsoever. The ban would presumably extend to legal immigrants living in the US. That bill is still working its way through the legislature but has the support of Gov. Greg Abbott.

The Texas proposal in particular specifically recalls a despicable chapter in US history, when so-called Alien Land Laws were passed in numerous states between the 1880s and 1920s to specifically bar Asian people from owning land. The California Alien Land Law was eventually overturned by the Supreme Court in 1952 for violating the 14th Amendment.

Chinese people were explicitly barred from immigration to the US for generations -- from the 1880s, when Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, until that law's repeal during World War II.

A ban on people 'ineligible for citizenship' owning property

So few Chinese people were allowed to immigrate for another generation after that until 1965 -- 105 per year -- that it amounted to a de facto ban.

As a result, the anti-Asian property laws mostly affected Japanese Americans.

While the laws did not specifically single out Asians, they were applied to people "ineligible for citizenship."

That made the laws specifically apply to Asians since Congress, at the time, allowed citizenship only for immigrants coming from Europe or Africa.

The most notorious example of Alien Land Laws was in California, which passed multiple versions of these laws over the years, and where Asian immigrants were concentrated.

One celebrated and yearslong court battle pitted a Japanese immigrant, Jukichi Harada, who found a way around the law by having his children own the house where his family lived in Riverside, California. They were ultimately able to keep the house when a judge ruled in their favor in 1918, but they were later moved to internment camps during World War II because of their Japanese ancestry.

Today, the Harada House is a National Historic Landmark and a museum.

Reinvoking the 'Yellow Peril'

I called Madeline Hsu, a history professor and expert in Asian American studies at the University of Texas at Austin, to ask if these new proposals are an example of history repeating itself.

"It's definitely sort of reinvocation of kind of what people in Asian American studies would refer to as 'Yellow Peril' fearmongering," she said.

"There are ways in which it resonates with what happened to Japanese Americans during World War II, where regardless of citizenship, regardless of nativity, they were racially categorized as enemy aliens."

Alien Land Laws in Texas

Hsu pointed me to an article in the Journal of Southern History by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley professor Brent Campney that documents fears of a Japanese "invasion" in the Rio Grande Valley more than 100 years ago.

'Exacerbating tensions'

Campney's larger argument in studying the treatment of Asian Americans, in this case people of Japanese descent, is that the local discrimination in Texas and also California reverberated back into the growing animosity between Japan and the US leading up to World War II.

Decades before the US government robbed Japanese Americans of their rights and held them in camps, Campney writes, "white Americans appealed to the same stereotypes and exclusionary impulses used against the Japanese during the internment, exacerbating tensions between Japan and the United States."

That's a historical lesson everyone has an interest in learning as tensions between the US and China grow today. The US military is maneuvering with allies to control China in the Pacific. The US government is focused on making the economy more independent from Chinese manufacturing. There is even talk of banning TikTok, the app popular with young people in the US and owned by a private Chinese company.

The problem of targeting people by nationality

These efforts against a government seep into more problematic territory when they seem to target the many Chinese and ethnic Chinese people who live in the US.

"Targeting people by nationality is also problematic," Hsu said. "That's not a good way of identifying people who are national security risks or who are acting on behalf of a foreign government."

She drew a correlation between these new state proposals and former President Donald Trump's promise to enforce a ban on Muslims traveling to the US. In order to get a plan through the Supreme Court, he instead banned, for a time, travel from certain countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America.

The Texas bill similarly targets specific countries by name and generalizes that all citizens of those countries could be a threat.

"The only thing it does is it expresses these kinds of gut suspicions and hostility to these countries," Hsu said.

The family Asteraceae or Compositae (known as the aster, daisy, or sunflower family) is the largest family of flowering plants, in terms of number of species.

The name 'Asteraceae' is derived from the type genus Aster, while 'Compositae', an older but still valid name, means composite and refers to the characteristic inflorescence, a special type of pseudanthium found in only a few other angiosperm families. The study of this family is known as synantherology.

The most evident characteristic of Asteraceae is perhaps their inflorescence: a specialised capitulum, technically called a calathid or calathidium, but generally referred to as flower head or, alternatively, simply capitulum. The capitulum is a contracted raceme composed of numerous individual sessile flowers, called the florets, all sharing the same receptacle.

The capitulum of the Asteraceae has evolved many characteristics that make it look superficially like a big single flower. This kind of flower-like inflorescences are quite widespread amongst plants and have been given the name of pseudanthia.

Many bracts form an involucre under the basis of the capitulum; these are called "phyllaries", or "involucral bracts". They may simulate the sepals of the pseudanthium. These are mostly herbaceous but can also be brightly coloured (e.g. Helichrysum) or have a scarious texture. The bracts can be free or fused, and arranged in one to many rows, overlapping like the tiles of a roof (imbricate) or not (this variation is important in identification of tribes and genera).

Each floret may itself be subtended by a bract, called a "palea" or "receptacular bract". These bracts as a group are often called "chaff". The presence or absence of these bracts, their distribution on the receptacle, and their size and shape are all important diagnostic characteristics for genera and tribes.

The florets have five petals fused at the base to form a corolla tube and they may be either actinomorphic or zygomorphic. Disc florets are usually actinomorphic, with five petal lips on the rim of the corolla tube. The petal lips may be either very short, or long, in which case they form deeply lobed petals. The latter is the only kind of floret in the Carduoideae, while the first kind is more widespread. Ray florets are always highly zygomorphic and are characterised by the presence of a ligule, a strap-shaped structure on the edge of the corolla tube consisting of fused petals. In the Asteroideae and other minor subfamilies these are usually borne only on florets at the circumference of the capitulum and have a 3+2 scheme – above the fused corolla tube, three very long fused petals form the ligule, with the other two petals being inconspicuously small. The Cichorioidea has only ray florets, with a 5+0 scheme – all five petals form the ligule. A 4+1 scheme is found in the Barnadesioideae. The tip of the ligule is often divided into teeth, each one representing a petal. Some marginal florets may have no petals at all (filiform floret).

The calyx of the florets may be absent, but when present it is always modified into a pappus of two or more teeth, scales or bristles and this is often involved in the dispersion of the seeds. As with the bracts, the nature of the pappus is an important diagnostic feature.

There are usually five stamens. The filaments are fused to the corolla, while the anthers are generally connate (syngenesious anthers), thus forming a sort of tube around the style (theca). They commonly have basal and/or apical appendages. Pollen is released inside the tube and is collected around the growing style, expelled with a sort of pump mechanism (nüdelspritze) or a brush.

The pistil is made of two connate carpels. The style has two lobes; stigmatic tissue may be located in the interior surface or form two lateral lines. The ovary is inferior and has only one ovule, with basal placentation.

CASTELLANO

Sule Square

Rangoon, as Yangon was called in the British colonial period, was developed on a grid like street layout being devised in 1852, using Sule Pagoda as its centre. Consequently Sule Pagoda is surrounded by some of the most impressive Victorian architecture, including Yangon City Hall, the High Court and the Main Post Office.

Sule Square in front of Sule Pagoda and flanked by the imposing colonial style City Hall on one side and Maha Bandula Garden on the other, was the rallying point for the 8888 uprising of 1988 and the Saffron Revolution of 2007. Both times thousands of monks gathered to pray around Sule Pagoda in anti-government and pro-democracy protest, and both times the Pagoda bore silent witness to the brutal reaction by the military regime.

Yangon

Yangon traces its roots to the 6th century AD, when it was founded by the dominant Mon ethnic group of what is today Lower Burma. The Shwedagon Pagoda was the original centre of the then small village known as Dagon. in 1755 Dagon was captured by King Alaungpaya of the Kongbaung Dynasty, which became the Third Burmese Empire. Dagon expanded rapidly and was renamed Yangon. Yangon is the more correct phonetic pronunciation of the city's name, being a combination of the words Yan and Koun meaning 'enemies' and 'running out'. In combination it can be translated as 'End of Strife'. The interchangeable pronunciation or the letters 'y' and 'r' in Burmese is the most likely explanation for the English name of 'Rangoon' for the city. The current military dictatorship has officially renamed the city from Rangoon to Yangon in 1989.

The ex-capital, but still often mistakenly identified as the capital, lies on the delta of the Yangon and Bago rivers, giving good transport access for commerce, but leaving the city exposed to invasion. The regime's generals therefore relocated the capital 320km inland to to Pyinmana in November 2005, which was then little more than a village. By March 2006 the created city was called Naypyidaw and designated Capital of Myanmar (or Burma). Today it is the third largest city in the country, after Yangon and Mandalay.

Myanmar

Burma, or Myanmar as it has been renamed by the military dictatorship, derives its name from the Burmese word Bamar, which is pronounced 'Bama', and became 'Burma' in the colonial days. However the in old Burmese it is pronounced Mranma or Myanmah, thus giving rise to Myanmar. The renaming remains the subject of debate, where the UN refers to 'Myanmar', the US, UK and France still refer to 'Burma', and yet the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal refer to 'Myanmar'. We've followed the UN and used current naming throughout this collection of photos, however with the alternatives included in the tags.
