Developer Buys 'Blue Castle' in Southeast

By Dana Hedgpeth

Washington Post Staff Writer

Monday, December 26, 2005; D03

It's known as the "Blue Castle" in the neighborhood where it has been a local landmark since the late 1800s. Now the building with the purplish-blue paint and the turrets has been swept up in the renaissance of redevelopment in Southeast Washington.

Preferred Real Estate Investments Inc. recently paid $20 million for 770 M Street SE. Executives at the Conshohocken, Pa., developer said the location of the 100,000-square-foot building makes it ideal for retail stores such as a Barnes & Noble bookstore and a Whole Foods grocery. The upscale stores eventually would supplant three charter schools that now are in the building.

The Blue Castle, across from the Navy Yard, is barely a block away from a huge new residential complex that is being built at the former site of the Arthur Capper/Carrollsburg housing project. More development is coming nearby with the proposed baseball stadium; 2 million square feet of office, residential and retail at the Southeast Federal Center; and the headquarters for the Transportation Department, which is under construction and expected to bring more than 5,000 office workers to the area.

"This is such a good corner, and there's a real lack of services here," said Michael G. O'Neill, chief executive of Preferred Real Estate. "You see new glass office towers going up but no retail, and it's a prime spot for retail."

The Blue Castle will be Preferred's first development in the District. The developer specializes in redoing historic buildings and is converting an old car-door production plant in Philadelphia into a multimillion-dollar retail project. In the Washington area, it turned a former TV factory in Columbia into offices and a warehouse for pharmaceuticals.

The Blue Castle was constructed in the late 1800s and was used as a garage and staging area to repair cable cars, trolleys and buses, according to the developer. O'Neill said his company will preserve its tall arched windows and exposed brick interior. But it won't be the Blue Castle anymore: He said he plans on painting it a more restrained hue.

O'Neill said he found the Blue Castle building three years ago while driving around Southeast. He was in the area after he bid on another old building near the Anacostia River, but he lost it to a developer who was willing to pay more. When he saw the Blue Castle, O'Neill said, he saw an opportunity. One problem: It wasn't for sale, according to its owner, a nonprofit group that provides services to mentally challenged people.

"We kept badgering them," O'Neill said. "We felt that if we buy it and be patient, we could do something with it." They came to a deal in November.

The three charter schools in the building still have five to seven years on their leases but are starting to look for new space. The developer said it is working with the tenants to help them find new homes and hopes to start construction in 2007.

Floyd Gilmore, principal of the Washington Mathematics, Science and Technology high school, said he's looking for space now for his 370 students but finding it is expensive and difficult. His school has been in the Blue Castle for four years and uses half of the building. Two other charter schools -- Eagle Academy and KIPP DC: KEY Academy -- and the nonprofit group use the rest of the space in the building.

Gilmore said he wants the school to own its own building, if possible, so it can confidently invest in equipment such as science labs. "It would just be too expensive for us to do it here when we only have a limited amount of time on the lease," Gilmore said. "The rent is going to be to the point where we won't be able to pay it."

Gilmore said he hopes to acquire a surplus school building from the D.C. government, though he'll miss the Blue Castle.

"It's a great building, and we've thoroughly enjoyed being here because it has good transportation, with good bus lines and Metro nearby, and it's in an up-and-coming neighborhood," Gilmore said. "It's a neighborhood you'd love to stay in, but you have to face reality about the price of real estate."

"Erm... 404? Isn't this some kind of... error?"

Trippy's first stop in Costa Rica: the Britannia Hotel.

"The Ultimate Costa Rican Experience" boasts the web site for this hotel; and depending upon one's expectations, this could be accurate. You want drugs? You got it! You want hookers? You got it! You want a gun-toting night porter? You got it! You want a snack or a cup of coffee after dark? In that case, your life is in your hands.

Yeah, we fell for the web site hype (via Orbitz -- never booking through those lying scumbags again).

"Close to airport," it said. "Close," the night clerk informed us when we arrived after a forty-five minute taxi ride, means "anything within twenty kilometers of the airport."

"Airport shuttle," they claim. "You have to call a day in advance for the shuttle, and the cost is twenty-five dollars American." Or... you can take a taxi, for twenty dollars.

The entire building is surrounded by a stone wall. The sides and rear of the building are enclosed in a huge glass and steel structure, kind of like a giant terrarium. Across the street there's a charming local corner bar, in front of which rough looking street people and "professional workers" ply their trades.

During the day, the neighborhood is kind of a run-down but otherwise typical noisy city block, with broken pavement and uneven sidewalks. After dark... "we recommend you do not go outside after dark," intoned the desk clerk, the armed security guard / night porter nodding quiet assent to her warning. So... food? The hotel restaurant, a fancy joint with linen napkins on the tables and serving escargot, was empty except for one bored girl in jeans and a midriff-baring t-shirt slouched over the bar watching television. The desk clerk informed us that take-out delivery places do not deliver to this neighborhood at night.

On the way to the hotel, through a warren of narrow, twisting streets lined with scary looking characters, hemmed in by dark, shuttered, barred windows looming sightlessly from broken brick facades on either side, the taxi driver explained as best he could through his limited English and our fractured Spanish that "Columbians" and "Nicaraguans" had taken over the area, and that it was rapidly deteriorating. "Problems, big problems, very bad, very bad," he said as he cautiously navigated the pot-holed route.

The hotel is located on the edge of the "bad part" of this neighborhood. The rooms are pleasant enough, clean and comfortable. Obviously some effort has gone into keeping the building secure and safe. But... close to airport? No. "Ultimate Costa Rican Experience?" Despite Trippy's urgings, I did not venture outside to make the acquaintance of any of the "experienced Costa Ricans" working the night shift, so I can't comment with authority as to the "ultimateness" of any potential "experiences." Other than to offer that ultimately, I'd expect to lose, if nothing else, my wallet.

Perhaps I'm simply not adventurous enough, but my initial impression of Costa Rica was... that I was not impressed. Perhaps I'd have been more bold had I been packing a revolver -- and it was one hefty revolver -- like the night security guy.

Scratch n Sniff

So I am walking through this abandoned hotel with Jen and Smack. I drop behind to shoot in one of the guest rooms and they continue on. As I go to catch up I find a room packed full with beds still in their plastic sheets, pillows, soap, shampoo. vacums, etc... Then it hits me - this room smells like death. Not overpowering, but just enough to make you stand up and notice - like driving down the road with the windows open, past a very ripe carcass on the roadside. I look around - nothing. As I'm leaving the room I start to hear it...this monstrous buzzing noise, coming from behind a door left ajar. I kick it open and the light comes streaming in - and there half hidden beneath the stairs - was this. Not sure if it was wounded by a hunter, or naturally curled up there - but it was nature at it's most primeval.

And a reminder - everything is from the Earth, and returns to it in one way or the other.

Please watch one of my favorite videos of all time.

www.chicagoarchitecture.info/Building/913/Aqua.php

2009

250 mtrs

Aqua is an 82-story mixed-use residential skyscraper in the Lakeshore East development in downtown Chicago designed in the Modern architectural style. The building's height of 819 ft (250 m), includes six levels of parking below ground. The building's eight-story, 140,000 sq ft (13,000 m2) base is topped by a 82,550 sq ft (7,669 m2) terrace with gardens, gazebos, pools, hot tubs, a walking/running track and fire pit. Each floor will cover approximately 16,000 sq ft (1,500 m2). The Aqua was named the Emporis 2009 skyscraper of the year.

Architect

Aqua is designed by Jeanne Gang, principal and founder of Studio Gang Architects, and it is her first skyscraper project. This is the largest project ever awarded to an American firm headed by a woman. Loewenberg & Associates are the architects of record, led by James Loewenberg.

Design

The Aqua Tower is located on the 200 block of North Columbus Drive, and is surrounded by high-rises. To capture views of nearby landmarks for Aqua's residents, Gang stretched its balconies outward by as much as 12 feet (3.7 meters).

The result is a building composed of irregularly shaped concrete floor slabs which lend the facade an undulating, sculptural quality. Gang cites the striated limestone outcroppings that are a common topographic feature of the Great Lakes region as inspiration for these slabs.

The building will contain 55,000 square feet (5,100 square meters) of retail and office space, in addition to 215 hotel rooms (floors 1-18), 476 rental residential units (floors 19-52), and 263 condominium units & Penthouses (floors 53-80).[14] Aqua will also be the first downtown building to combine condos, apartments and a hotel. Strategic Hotels & Resorts had agreed to acquire the first 15 floors of hotel space upon completion of the building, but terminated its $84 million contract for the space in August 2008, citing significant changes in the economic environment. On May 12, 2010, it was announced that Carlson Hotels Worldwide agreed to spend $125 million to open the first Radisson Blu hotel in the United States on 18 vacant floors of the highrise.

The name 'Aqua' was assigned to the building by Magellan Development Group LLC. It fits the nautical theme of the other buildings in the Lakeshore East development, and is derived from the wave-like forms of the balconies; the tower's proximity to nearby Lake Michigan also influenced the name.

Sustainability was also an important factor in Aqua's design. Gang and her team refined the terrace extensions to maximize solar shading, and other sustainable features will include rainwater collection systems and energy-efficient lighting. The green roof on top of the tower base will be the largest in Chicago. The tower will seek LEED certification.

Read the story I wrote: On July 19th, 1954 the music world was changed forever. Sam Phillips, the owner of small a Memphis based record label named Sun Records, released a single titled “That’s Alright.” Although the song was a cover, a baby faced, 19 year-old Elvis Aaron Presley and a backup band consisting of talented local musicians made it their very own. With it’s slapping of an upright bass, dynamic guitar playing, and the sound heavily influenced by white hillbilly music and black rhythm and blues, a new genre was born. One of the earliest forms of rock n roll, the sound was known as Rockabilly.

There were a few artists playing Rockabilly type music before Elvis ever laid down tracks at Sun Records. But after that July day, with its new and exciting sound, Rockabilly exploded. Many of the most acclaimed Rockabilly artists ever, recorded at Sun Records at some point in time. Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Warren Smith, Charlie Rich, and Sonny Burgess were some of the incredible talents that were catalysts for the Rockabilly movement.

Rockabilly’s shelf life was short-lived however. In 1958, Elvis had joined the Army. In 1959, Buddy Holly and 3 others were killed in a plane crash. By the early 1960’s, Rockabilly was all but dead. The music was replaced by pop stars and country western crooners. Rockabilly’s influence however, can be felt everywhere. If you’ve never heard of it before, you’ve probably heard music inspired by those early Rockabilly artists. For if it wasn’t for Rockabilly, there would be no Beatles, no The Who, no Rolling Stones, and no Led Zeppelin. Any of those names ring a bell?

In the late 1970’s to early 1980’s, Rockabilly had somewhat of a revival. Artists like Levi Dexter & the Rockats, The Blasters, The Polecats, and popular recording artists the Stray Cats, all made a choice to get away from increasingly commercialized pop music and get back to American roots music. The Stray Cats were the only ones who achieved some kind of mainstream success. But what they all did was introduce a forgotten musical genre to a new generation and inspire a new counter culture.

Today, Rockabilly is alive and very well all over the world. Although the music isn’t attaining chart success, the counter culture itself is booming. One of the hotbeds for the Rockabilly scene is Orange County, California. It is a counter culture in the same regard as the hippy movement of the 60’s, Punk Rock in the late 70’s & early 80’s, and Gangster Rap of the 1990’s. In 2010, Rockabilly isn’t just about the music, it’s about a lifestyle. It’s a community brought together by the love of American roots music and early American car culture. Car clubs are a common site at Rockabilly concerts and festivals. Pre-1964 customized lead sleds that rumble through the streets, sitting low to the ground, with ultra creative pinstriping are sometimes a hotter topic than the music being played on stage. Fashion from the 1950’s is ever-present and worn proudly in today’s Rockabilly scene. Men wearing white t-shits with the sleeves rolled up, Chuck Taylor Converse on their feet, and cuffed Levi’s while piling their pompadours high are a staple. The ladies can be seen in poodle skirts or dresses that show off their shapely hips, cardigan sweaters, high heels, and an up do that would make any beehive wearing hairdresser from the 50’s proud. Seeing a woman all dolled up like she was straight out of an Alberto Vargas or Gil Elvgren pin-up painting is a welcome and thankfully, a common site as well. Art is a big part of today’s Rockabilly culture as well. Talented artists that are well versed in the art of pinstriping are a hot commodity as every custom car driver wants an original piece of art on their ride. The “Rebel Without A Cause” look that the Rockabilly men of today go for wouldn’t be complete without tattoos. Although, tattoos are equally as popular with the women these days. Traditional tattoos like those done on Sailors in World War II can be seen everywhere throughout the Rockabilly scene.

Rockabilly has had a revival and has been re-incarnated. The music industry has changed to a point where we will probably never see a recording artist playing Rockabilly top any kind of music charts again. But with the passion, the love, and the dedication for the music, the cars, the art, and the Rockabilly counter culture overall, the people entrenched in the Rockabilly scene of today are going to make sure it doesn’t go away again.

Equilibrium, the Human Mashup. The show's goal was to ask "How can art and technology and the synergy of the two address humanity's next evolutionary step?". Being a staunch singularitarian this was right up, or is it down, my proverbial alley. I built an application that allows a user to take a self portrait photograph and then draw themselves on a wall simply by using and moving their hand. The premise was to use the human as the sole interface to draw themselves, exploring the convergence of man and technology. A one day only installation, I didn't have to high of hopes for it's exposure. On the flip side, this being my first showing ever I was like a greedy 8 year old on Christmas morning, and extremely anxious to see how people would interact and respond to the installation. The methodology of controlling an interface without the normal peripherals such as a mouse, keyboard, touch screen, kiosk, or otherwise was foreign to all that attended. What transpired blew me away. The attendance, response and exposure far exceeded my hopes. I barely had to explain at all to users how to run the application. People just stepped right up to the installation and began to interact with it. They were actually learning on their own while performing the drawing. People were actually converging with the technology. Furthermore, those that were done performing their drawing became evangelists, telling those who followed them their idea of how best to use the application. At that moment it became cemented in my mind that I had succeeded in my experiment. People had invested themselves in the piece to the point of bringing out their own inner artist. Several times I stepped in to 'coach' people on how to get the most out of the motion detection while drawing their portrait. The response I got was unexpected. People took personal offense that I was pushing my artistic ideas on their own drawing. Again, success. I was also sent to the floor several times by attendees who said they had come to the event specifically to see my work which they had been following online. There were even several people who mentioned that they had hooked my work up to projectors at parties they were holding. Wha?! Seriously, amazed.

I'd like to thank several people for the night. Steve Benoit for all his help with testing the application, videography and film editing of the event. The result is the shweet movie posted above. Rachel Kjack and Adrienne Fritze from SAO and Working Artists Online respectively for their organization and inviting me to submit my work. All that attended, I met some inspirational folk. And finally, my wife Lisa for her unending support and diggin' me even when I have late night dreaded 'code eyes'.

Looking forward to the next event.

A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety. ~Ansel Adams

The creative act lasts but a brief moment, a lightning instant of give-and-take, just long enough for you to level the camera and to trap the fleeting prey in your little box. ~Henri Cartier Bresson

I hope you enjoy my attempt at capturing the essence of our passion, somewhat personified. I appreciate the irony in my attempt, yet I understand the duplicity of practising my passion whilst paying homage.

What is photography? I would appreciate your views in the comments I hope will follow.

To me it is exactly this - the enjoyment felt capturing something beautiful.

2010 saw the completion of most of the walls, terraces, paths and other hardscape features after almost fifteen years of hard work. This allowed me to begin upgrading the plantings and adding sculpture and other garden art and ornament. The year also saw visits by a variety of wildlife, some of which I was fortunate enough to capture. I seem to be fast running out of steam as retirement approaches, but I hope to concentrate on the finishing touches in the next few years.

JEAN-BAPTISTE GODIN ( ENGLISH )

Jean-Baptiste André Godin (26 January 1817 -29 January 1888) was a French industrialist and social experimentor born on the 26th of January 1817 at Esquéhéries (Aisne).

The son of an artisan, he entered an iron-works at an early age, and at seventeen made a tour of France as journeyman. Returning to Esquéhéries in 1837, he started a small factory for the manufacture of castings for heating-stoves. The business increased rapidly, and for the purpose of railway facilities was transferred to Guise in 1846. At the time of Godin's death in 1888 the annual output was over four millions of francs (4,160,000), and in 1908 the employees numbered over 2000 and the output was over 280,000.

An ardent disciple of Charles Fourier, he advanced a considerable sum of money towards the disastrous Fourierist experiment of V. P. Considerant (q.v.) in Texas (known as La Reunion. He profited, however, by its failure, and in 1859 started the Familistère, or community settlement, of Guise on more carefully laid plans.

The Familistère forms a town within the town of Guise. It comprises, in addition to a large factory, three large buildings, each four stories high, capable of housing all the work-people, each family having two or three rooms. The main building consists of three rectangular blocks joined at the corners. Each of these blocks has a central court covered with a glass roof under which children can play in all weather. There is no church of any sort. (There are, of course, churches within the rest of Guise). At the back of the main block there was a nursery. There is a separate block, known as the "economat", containing various shops, refreshment rooms and recreation rooms of various kinds(?), stores for the purchase of groceries, drapery and every necessity. This has recently (2008) been restored and is now a cafe, a shop selling books, postcards etc and an exhibition area. There were also allotments for the workers.

Opposite the main block there was a building containing a theater for concerts and dramatic entertainments and a primary school. There was also a communal laundry and swimming pool. This was a few years ago derelict but has now been restored. The swimming pool is still a swimming poll but the laundry is a meeting room and the drying room is now (2008) an exhibition room. In 1880 the whole was turned into a co-operative society, with provision by which it eventually became the property of the workers.

Godin manufactured cookers and heating stoves of many kinds mainly made from cast iron castings. Sometimes these were enameled. These are still to be found in use all over France. They can be found for sale on eBay.

This business was still owned by the workers in the 1950s but soon after was taken over by Le Creuset. It is not obvious that the factory is still functioning. It is seems the domestic building were privatised. The state of the domestic buildings was deteriorating but has recently been awarded EU money for it to be restored.

In 1871 Godin was elected deputy for Aisne, but retired in 1876 to devote himself to the management of the Familistère. In 1882 he was created a Knight of the Legion of Honor.

Godin was the author of Solutions sociales (1871); Les Socialistes et les Droits du travail (1874); Mutualité sociale et association du capital et du travail (1880); La Republique du travail et la reforme parlementaire (1889). Although this artwork is a spiritual statement, not a political one, you might want to understand more about the concept of the Letter of Marque. A link to start with:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letter_of_Marque

The background was pieced together from many photos. The royal coat-of-arms was adapted from a photo I took of a very old crest in St. Augustine, Florida. I've also made the letterhead from it. The letter is NOT a copy of a historical document: it is an original compilation, made to look aged, which is (mostly) legible if you see it large. There is a lot to read, but it's revelational and really worth it !

Trufa negra (Tuber nigrum Bull. (= Tuber melanosporum Vittad.).

It was once fashionable in religious circles to say that Jesus Christ would never return to the earth. There are still plenty of professing Christians who believe that. But there are now many others who have come to believe that the Second Coming is a very important event.

Christadelphians have always taught that the Return of Jesus Christ to the earth is vital to the fulfillment of the purpose of God. This booklet reviews Bible teaching about the Second Coming, both the events that will lead up to that miracle and the reason for the Lord's Return.

New Testament Teaching

Someone has counted the New Testament references to this great event, and they number 318 occurrences! If you reflect that the number of times the word for Christian love occurs is only 115, you will begin to see the importance of this topic. Nor is it simply the case that only one or two New Testament writers refer to the matter in their writings. Treatment of the subject is widely spread.

Jesus spoke often about the Kingdom of God and his Second Coming. His parables, for example, were told to those who thought the Kingdom of God was to appear immediately. He was like a nobleman who had to go "into a far country to receive for himself a Kingdom and to return" (Luke 19:12). More than once he spoke of the Coming of the Son of Man (e.g. Matthew 24:27,30,37,39,48; 25:27; 26:64). And when he assured his disciples of his continuing spiritual, but invisible, presence "even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20), he inferred that then he would be visibly present with them for ever.

The testimony of the Apostles was equally plain. They had been clearly taught by the Risen Lord who, during the forty days before his ascension into heaven, instructed them about the Kingdom of God, the restored kingdom of Israel (Acts 1:3,6). It was the opening theme of his post-resurrection appearances that all the Old Testament promises were coming to their fulfillment in him (Luke 24:27). At the time of his ascension, as he was being taken up from the Mount of Olives into the clouds, God sent His angels to explain.

"Ye men of Galilee", they said to the watching apostles, "Why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11).

It is not therefore surprising that when the Apostles began to teach in the streets of Jerusalem, they said that their Lord Jesus Christ was to return to the earth as King. Peter gave the lead when he boldly announced that the grave could not keep Jesus imprisoned. He referred his hearers to a statement in Psalm 110:1, used also by his Lord, to show that he had gone to heaven only until his enemies have been subdued (2:34,35). Note the authoritative use of the Old Testament.

But also note a vital point. Bible teaching is never given just for the sake of informing us what happens next. It always has a deeper intention, for we are meant to use the knowledge it confers to prepare ourselves for those coming events:

"Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ . . . Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:36,38).

It should follow that our consideration of Bible truth concerning the Return of the Lord should also cause us to search our hearts.

Other New Testament Writings

But what of the writings of other New Testament authors? Let us look at just one of the New Testament letters, the First written by Paul to the Thessalonians. Notice how he centers his entire message on the truth of the personal return to the earth of the Lord:

"wait for his Son from heaven . . . which delivereth us from the wrath to come" (1:10);

"what is our hope or joy? Are not ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?" (2:19);

"he may stablish your hearts unblameable . . . at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints" (3:13);

"the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout" (4:16);

"the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night" (5:2);

"I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (5:23).

You could try extending this investigation, if you wish. The emphasis on the Lord's Coming continues in all the New Testament letters, but it is always related to practical Christian living. Because the Lord is coming again, there were matters in their lives that required attention! And it is so for us.

Old Testament Teaching

The same person who counted 318 references in the New Testament extended the search to the Old Testament, and discovered 1,527 such references to an event in God's purpose which can be no other than the Coming of Christ as King. Let it be clear that the exact number is unimportant; there is always room for some difference of opinion about the occasional passage. But it is perhaps startling to some readers to consider that there could be five times as many references to the Second Coming in a part of the Bible which has suffered widely from neglect over the years.

The fact of the matter is this: the New Testament can only be understood once the Old Testament has also been studied. The two Testaments belong together as interdependent parts of God's revealed truth. What the Old Testament foretells the New Testament fulfils, in part. But a very large amount of Old Testament prophecy remains unfulfilled.

Consider these promises of a King who will reign over God's Kingdom on earth, and ask yourself whether they have ever been fulfilled:

GENESIS: "Thy seed (a descendant of Abraham) shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed" (22:17,18; see Acts 3:25; Galatians 3:16).

2 SAMUEL: "And when thy days (David) be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed (descendant) after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house (a Temple) for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever" (7:12,13).

PSALMS: "The LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession" (2:7,8; see Acts 4:25,26);

"He (the promised king) . . . shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth" (72:6-8).

ISAIAH: "It shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD's house (His Temple) shall be established in the top of the mountains (at Jerusalem) . . . and all nations shall flow unto it . . . for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations" (2:2-4);

"Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to order it and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever" (9:7);

JEREMIAH: "Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch (descendant), and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is the name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS" (23:5,6).

The Kingdom of God

Many times God has promised that He will rule the earth. What man has failed time and again to achieve, God will establish. The King will be a descendant of both Abraham and David (see Matthew 1:1). He will rule from Jerusalem, on David's throne (see Luke 1:31-33). His Kingdom will be one of justice and righteousness; it will involve Divine education, Temple worship, and the exercise of Kingly power to establish peace on earth (see Revelation 11:15-18).

The Kingdom of God was once before established on earth. King David and his descendants reigned upon the throne of the Kingdom of the Lord (1 Chronicles 28:5). There was nothing special about the throne itself. The Divine appointment was what mattered and when king after king had neglected God's law, He brought that arrangement to an end. But even when the prophet Ezekiel announced the end of the Kingdom to King Zedekiah (in 21:25-27), he promised that God would restore the Kingdom on earth when he should "come whose right it is".

The Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth has therefore to be understood against that powerful Old Testament background. When Jesus began his public ministry by announcing that the Kingdom of God was at hand (Mark 1:15), he was saying to those who knew the Old Testament promises that he was the promised King. But Jesus had first come to achieve personal righteousness, and to make it possible for others to become right with God.

It is now possible for us to find peace with God through the forgiveness of our sins, by association with the saving work of the Lord Jesus. First we have to understand the Gospel, including Bible teaching about the work and person of the Lord Jesus, and the Kingdom over which he is now the King. Then we have to be baptized as believing adults into his saving Name (see Acts 8:1 2).

Behold Your King!

But what is the Second Coming of the Lord going to be like? For example, would it be possible to miss it altogether and not even be aware that it had occurred? Will it be visible or invisible? Will Jesus be there in person or merely a spiritual presence? And will he come to the earth or only towards the earth?

Jesus Christ rose bodily from the grave. He was not an invisible spirit creature but One who could be seen, handled and held (1 John 1:1; Luke 24:39,40). His body was marked by the evidence of his suffering on the cross. Yet he was no longer subject to the limitations of human existence. He could come and go despite locked doors, and on Mount Olivet he ascended bodily to heaven, defying the law of gravity. The disciples had seen him go; he would return visibly. As the angel later said: "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him" (Revelation 1:7). Or as Zechariah the Old Testament prophet had predicted, long before the crucifixion, "They shall look upon me whom they have pierced and they shall mourn for him" (12:10).

So it will not do to say that only those who look with faith will see the Lord. Some will look, see, and mourn (Revelation 1:7). Nor will it do to say that Jesus will come invisibly, for the Lord himself warned:

"Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets . . ." (Matthew 24:23,24).

Nor will it do to argue that the Bible talks of the presence of the Lord, meaning that it will be an invisible one. The New Testament also talks about the revelation of the Lord, using a word that means uncovering or manifesting. In fact, the presence (Greek: parousia) of the Lord turns out to be an especially suitable term. One of the most authoritative Greek Lexicons available says of the word:

"It became the official term for a visit of a person of high rank, especially of kings and emperors visiting a province" (Arndt and Gingrich).

It is such a visit by a King that the Scriptures foretell. The crowds who welcomed King Jesus into Jerusalem when he sat astride a donkey and they threw coats and' palm branches before him, shouted out greetings that referred right back to the Promises of God: "Blessed be the kingdom of our father David that cometh in the name of the Lord" (Mark 11:10). Matthew comments that the rejoicing was a foretaste of what had been forecast by Zechariah the prophet, when he wrote "Behold, thy King cometh unto thee".

Now if the initial royal visit was attended by such joy and rejoicing, consider what the next one will be like! The prophet had declared:

"Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold thy king cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation. . . and he shall speak peace unto the heathen; and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth" (Zechariah 9:9,10).

Dual Fulfillment

This Scripture illustrates a widely used feature of Bible prophecy: its joint short and long-term character. Jerusalem rejoiced at the Kingly coming of Jesus -- "Lowly and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass" -- just as the prophet had said. But their joy was short-lived, for he did not then go on to establish worldwide peace, or commence to rule from Jerusalem over a Kingdom that was to last for ever. Jesus completed enough of the prophecy at that time to demonstrate that he was the Coming One, and to give us confidence that he will return to complete the promised transformation of the earth. Zechariah compressed the two comings in such a way that there appeared to be no interval between them. This has led some people to argue that the Kingdom will never come, because, they say, even Jesus expected it in the First Century, or at most shortly afterwards. It has thus been dismissed by some as an early Christian hope, which has now been superseded by a superior understanding. But when all the Scriptures are studied carefully, it becomes clear that the Coming of Jesus was not to occur immediately after his ascension to heaven. The Day and the Hour

Any attempt to show that Jesus was mistaken about the time of his Coming is doomed to failure. He clearly stated, more than once, that he did not know:

"Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only" (Matthew 24:36).

As he later said, this was something that the Father had reserved within His own authority (Acts 1:7). But Jesus did know that some long time would elapse before his Second Coming. He told parables to indicate that his coming would not "immediately appear" (Luke 1 9:11), that it would be "after a long time" (Matthew 25:19), and that there might be some delay for those who were waiting (25:3). Like their Lord, his followers were to appreciate that they could "not know what hour" he would come.

The apostles also acknowledged that they could not know the precise time of the great event for which they waited. Peter warned about people who would scoff, as so many have, at the "promise of his coming" (2 Peter 3:4). Indeed he poured scorn on their faithlessness, what he called "willful ignorance" -- people believing what they wanted to believe, regardless of the evidence. And Paul was in no doubt either, for he went on record as saying:

"But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh . . ." (1 Thessalonians 5:1,2).

Can you complete that quotation? It holds the key to two vital matters concerning the early return of the King. Notice first what the verse above says. There would be general indications available -- what Paul calls "times and seasons" -- which would help keep the believers prepared. And the verse continues:

". . . the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night."

When it happens the Lord's Coming will be swift, sudden and unexpected. No-one expects thieves to strike. But they often succeed because people overlook the dangers. It is also the case that speed is vital to a successful robbery, which is why the figure is used by Jesus (Matthew 24:43), Paul (1 Thessalonians 5:2), and Peter (2 Peter

3:10), to emphasise the vital point. We must be on our guard, watchful, prepared, vigilant. The Lord could come at any time! He will come when we least expect him!

The Times and Seasons

That is why when Jesus explained what was to happen before his Return, he very carefully emphasised the need for watchfulness. Sitting with his disciples one day on the Mount of Olives, from where he would later ascend to heaven, he gave them some general indications of what was to happen prior to his "coming and the end of the world" (Matthew 24:3). This prophecy presents a fascinating challenge, for it combines a short-term prediction about the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple, with a long-term forecast of world events.

A list of the predicted events in the three Gospel accounts (Matthew 24, Mark 1 3 and Luke 24), which does not claim to be a structured sequence of prophetic events, shows the following:

1. The rise of false Christianity and false Christs

2. The persecution of true Christians.

3. Wars and rumors of wars, nation against nation.

4. Earthquakes, famines and pestilences.

5. Jerusalem surrounded by armies.

6. The Jewish nation dispersed.

7. Jerusalem in non-Jewish occupation.

8. Tribulation and distress.

9. Signs in the sun, moon and stars.

10. The powers of heaven shaken.

Notice how believers are warned about the rise and growth of false Christianity. It is the Lord's first concern. His words were fulfilled by the rapid development of wrong teaching in New Testament times (e.g. Acts 20:29), and are being fulfilled again at the close of this age. Elsewhere the message is that the true believers will comprise a very small remnant, compared with those who hold a distorted form of Christianity.

Antichrist

The apostles also warn about this development. Paul was emphatic that there would be manifestations of false Christianity, for he prophesied that the Day of the Lord:

"shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped" (2 Thessalonians 2:3,4).

The apostle Paul describes the man of sin in language that refers back to the prophet Daniel, who accurately foretold the rise and fall of four empires that exercised power in the Middle East. He traced the development from them to a false religious system, involving the Holy Roman Empire and the papacy, that is opposed to Christ and his true followers. This is counterfeit Christianity, and the apostle Paul describes it as "the mystery of iniquity" which was already at work, and "a strong delusion".

The other thread of teaching in the Lord's catalogue of future events concerned trouble. There were to be wars and rumors of wars, both within and between nations; there would be natural disasters and widespread hardship, earthquakes, famines and epidemics; terrors and fearful sights would be in the heavens, causing much fear and distress. People would not know which way to turn for fear of what was about to happen on earth.

To some extent these problems are as old as man. The tendency to war against one another is evident even in the first book of the Bible, and famine features there too. But even within Bible history the atrocities of which man is capable become increasingly ugly, and since then even more widespread horrors have been seen. The powers now available to mankind are enough to make any sane person fear for the future. More than ever before, these words of Jesus are coming true:

"There shall be . . . upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory" (Luke 21:25-27).

Tribulation

The reference to the sea and waves roaring, like others to signs in the sun, moon and stars, may be either symbolic or literal or some combination of both. The prophet Isaiah, for example, wrote about the wicked being "like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt" (57:20). Jesus may have been drawing upon such imagery to describe a world that was full of trouble because it was full of wickedness. He may also have been teaching us to look out for some upheaval of the physical order, like tidal waves, which would also be an indication of the end of the age. Certainly there have been many earthquakes and natural disasters over the past few years, all over the world. The apostle Paul described the whole world order as groaning and travailing in pain (Romans 8:22), like a woman waiting to be delivered of a child. It is thus evident that our present troubles are the birthpangs of a new and better world, soon to begin.

In both Testaments we are told that the tribulation that will come at the end of human government is the final herald of the Second Coming. It will be:

"a time of trouble such as never was" (Daniel 12:1);

"the time of Jacob's (Israel's) trouble" (Jeremiah 30:7);

"great tribulation" (Matthew 24:21).

Will the believers waiting for their Lord have to suffer this trouble, or will they be spared? The likelihood is that present-day believers will live through this time of trouble, indeed that they have already begun to do so. Jesus promised that for the elect's sake that time would be shortened (Mark 13:20). But those who finally stand approved before the Judge are those "which came out of the great tribulation, and they washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb" (Revelation 7:14).

As that trouble increases, and God pours out His wrath upon the earth, there are indications that true believers will be sheltered from that outpouring. Isaiah describes the great shake-up of human society when God intervenes:

"Come, my people, enter into thy chambers. . . hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity" (24:18-23, 26:20,21).

We must therefore consider carefully what Jesus said:

"When these things (the signs of which he spoke) begin to come to pass, then look up and lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh" (Luke 21:28).

We should not wait until total disaster has struck, and there is no escape route left. It is better to learn the lesson now, that this is the time immediately before the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Nation of Sign

There is one great sign which removes all doubt concerning his imminent return. The nation of Israel is back occupying the land promised by God. The history of the Jewish nation has been a guide throughout the ages to the outworking of God's purposes. They were called as a special people, because of the great promises that had been made to their Fathers. They were given the right to occupy the land we now know as Israel, conditional upon their faithful obedience to God. They were the people whose kings occupied the throne of God's Kingdom on earth.

They forfeited these rights when, after centuries of indifference, they not only refused to accept the Lord Jesus as their Messiah, but were involved, with the Romans, in effecting his death by crucifixion. Because of that rejection, Jerusalem was overthrown. Throughout the intervening centuries Jews have wandered the earth as a stateless people, hated and persecuted almost everywhere they went, just as Scripture said they would be.

But Scripture also forecast a better future for this nation of sign, not because they would change their behavior and live to deserve better treatment, but because God would take pity on their plight and act to redeem them. He would remember the promises made of old to the Fathers and act to vindicate His great name. At the time of the end they would be brought back from the nations and once more be settled in their own land-the land of promise! So the prophets said:

ISAIAH: "The remnant shall return . . the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion" (10:21; 35:10).

JEREMIAH: "He that scattered Israel will gather him" (31:10).

EZEKIEL: "I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries . . . then shall they dwell in their land . . . yea, they shall dwell with confidence" (11:17; 28:25,26).

ZECHARIAH: "I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem" (8:8).

And so it came to pass. After nearly two thousand years of dispersion and down-treading, in 1948 the State of Israel was born by the decree of the United Nations, and in 1 967 the whole of Jerusalem was repossessed by Jews. It had taken all that time for the words of Jesus to be fulfilled:

"They shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled" (Luke 21:24).

Everything now indicates that the Times of the Gentiles are rapidly drawing to a close and the Time of the Kingdom of God is once more at hand. The bringing together of troublous times and the return of the Jews to the Land removes any doubt. Shortly King Jesus will return to Jerusalem as World Ruler, to reign over Israel and over all nations. Of all the available Signs of the Times given by Jesus and the prophets, the establishment of Israel-the Nation of Sign-is the clearest witness that the End is now at hand.

The "Rapture"

What then awaits the faithful follower of Jesus? Can he expect to go to heaven with the Lord at his Return? Hardly, for the Lord is coming to reign on earth, from Jerusalem. An elaborate scheme has been devised by some Bible readers which requires not one Coming but two. According to this, Christ's Coming would be first for the Church only and would be a secret "rapture". He would come again with the Church, for the world, and this would be visible and public. In some versions of this theory the interval between the two comings is very small; in others as much as seven years is thought to separate the two events.

There is very little Scripture that can be used to attempt to support these theories, for whilst there are some indications that a separation will occur between companions when Jesus comes (Luke 17:34-36), the main teaching about the circumstances of the Return is that given in Paul's First Letter to the Thessalonians:

"The Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord" (4:16,17).

The phrase caught up is that from which the whole idea of a rapture has evolved; and the links with a supposed seven year period of tribulation have been achieved by the unsatisfactory interpretation of other Scriptures, especially from the Revelation. Clearly there is to be a catching away of true believers, both of the living and the resurrected dead, "to meet the Lord in the air". They are to form a welcoming party who, with the angels who attend his coming, will make up his entourage. But they go to meet him, not he them. And their destination is made clear in the Scriptures already considered: the Lord and his followers are bound for Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:4), "the city of the great king" (Matthew 5:35).

The Lord will come!

In these dying moments of human government, the powers of heaven will be shaken as men's hearts fail them for fear. The nations will be engaged in a battle around Jerusalem. Then the Lord will come! Unexpectedly, suddenly, in great power and glory, bringing salvation for those who have faithfully waited and prepared for this central event in their lives; but bringing judgement upon all those who have wilfully ignored the faithful promises and gracious invitation of God:

"The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power: when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe" (2 Thessalonians 1:9,10).

It is vital therefore that we believe what the Bible so clearly promises. We cannot simply "wait and see", because Jesus is coming to save those who already believe, not to give reasons for faith to those who have had clear evidence, but no inclination for the things of God.

When the Lord spoke to his followers about his eventual return to earth, he focused their attention more on the consequences of his Coming than on the sequence of events itself. To this day we cannot know for sure when Jesus will come. But we know perfectly clearly that when he comes he will call us to account, and ask us how we spent our lives on the eve of his return:

"Take heed . . . be not led astray . . . be not troubled . . . take heed to yourselves . . . preach the gospel . . . be not anxious . . . endure to the end . . . flee . . . pray . . . believe not false prophets . . . take heed . . . look up and lift up your heads . . . take heed to yourselves . . . watch . . . BE READY" (Matthew 24; Mark 13; Luke 21).

The apostles make the very same points as they reflect on the nearness of the Lord's Return.

"What manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness . . . be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless" (2 Peter 3:11-14).

"Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" (Titus 2:12,13).

"When he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man who has this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure" (1 John 3:2,3).

Take Heed to Yourselves

The Bible is our guidebook to the future, just as it is our handbook for the present. It alone will show us what God wants us to do. From it we can learn God's purpose and promises. The first thing is to understand and believe those things that are true. We shall then come to appreciate the need for obedience to God, starting with baptism. And thus we shall be doing what Jesus commanded.

The coming Kingdom of God on earth will transform human experience. We need to learn to live now in harmony with our Creator. The Lord is at hand! It is now an urgent matter for us all to examine our lives, so that we are properly prepared for the Coming of the King.

A Warning and an Upgrade

On the weekend of 25/26 April 2009 laminated cards headed: ”WARNING NOTICE” were tied to columns in the streets of Tottenham Hale Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ). They announced "New parking signs and lines"; and that "Parking signs and road markings have been programmed to be upgraded".

I talked to some of our neighbours who were also looking at the notices. What did they make of this "warning", with a promise of something "new"? What exactly was this particular "upgrade"?

They didn't know. I don't expect many local residents did know.

Stripping away spin and obfuscation, this was the work done.

► Some faded yellow and white traffic and parking lines were repainted.

► Hundreds of lines were corrected because they were unlawful and did not comply with the Statutory Regulations.

► That's it!

In 2009 having parking lines which did not comply with the law wasn't a problem unique to Haringey Council. Click here to read about the mess which many local authorities across the country made of their traffic lines and signs. (Use the 'Back' button to return.)

Haringey's Parking and Highways Service - under the 'leadership' of former Labour councillor Brian Haley - was slower than many to come out of denial, admit they were doing it wrong, and agree a programme for repainting lines and getting them right.

Wording of the Temporary Notices

Does the wording of these notices really matter? After all, the work was finished within three weeks, when most of the temporary laminated cards had gone.

In my view, it does matter. How local councils inform and explain things to residents is a vital issue. "Warning" them and promising a spurious "upgrade" is a symptom of a diseased, secretive culture.

"The highest standards of propriety and accuracy"

Haringey's website has a page headed: Setting the Record Straight. It includes this paragraph.

"But in spite of our best efforts, media reports are not always accurate. People have a right to reliable information, just as we have a duty to provide it. That is why we introduced this section to the site. The information we provide is subject to a Code of Conduct under the Local Government Act 1986. This means we are bound by the highest standards of propriety and accuracy in providing information.

My request to Dr Ita O'Donovan

In the spirit of these golden words on Haringey's website, on 28 April 2009 I wrote to Dr Ita O'Donovan, then Haringey's Chief Executive. I asked for her help in getting the laminated cards replaced with notices which were simple, clear and truthful.

I proposed the wording: "We are correcting some errors in the existing white and yellow traffic lines and repainting lines which are faded".  I suggested that the words: "We apologise for any inconvenience", would have been welcome.

Dr O'Donovan's reply on 14 May, over two weeks later, was almost wholly negative. She wrote:

"I have looked into this matter as you have requested. I feel that there is little difference in the message of the notice currently being used and that which you propose. Given that these works are due to be completed within the next two weeks I do not feel it would be an effective use of the Council’s scarce resources to reprint and put up fresh notices."

"The work itself will result in minimal inconvenience to residents but I do accept that an apology for any inconvenience could have been included on the signs. I will arrange for this to be included in any future signs of this nature."

I emailed back, agreeing with Dr O'Donovan that it was by then too late and would waste resources to put up truthful signs. But I pointed out this wouldn't have been the case if she had acted immediately when I raised the problem with her.

I suggested that a few dozen laminated A3 cards and some nylon tape are not prohibitively costly. Probably no more than Haringey Council was then paying for a few minutes of the time of one of the numerous consultants it then employed.

I quoted the words of the (then) Prime Minister, Gordon Brown on 11 May 2008. "We must show we have the highest standards for our profession. And we must show that, where mistakes have been made and errors have been discovered, where wrongs have to be righted, that that is done so immediately."

A chance to understand public information

All bureaucracies try to hide behind a curtain of jargon. Local government is not immune. And this is after decades of campaigning by the Plain English Campaign with its highly prized 'Crystal Mark'.

In 1971, its founder Chrissie Maher asked: ‘Why isn’t the public given a chance to understand public information?’ She gave the answers: ‘To keep them in the dark.’ ‘To stop them claiming what is rightfully theirs.’ ‘To stop them interfering in things they wouldn’t understand’." ( Source: Chrissie Maher's book "Born To Crusade")

Though some people in local government do 'get it'.

”Without explaining what a council does in proper English then local people will fail to understand its relevance to them or why they should bother to turn out and vote. Unless information is given to people to explain why their council matters then local democracy will be threatened with extinction.”

“ . . . we can not, must not and should not hide behind impenetrable jargon and phrases. We do not pretend to be perfect, but as this list shows, we are striving to make sure that people get the chance to understand what services we provide." .

(Source: Two quotes by the late Simon Milton, then Chair of the Local Government Association.)

________________

For an individual or an organisation, admitting your mistakes can be embarrassing. It's tempting to fudge and obfuscate. Though for local councils who have had non-compliant traffic lines and signs for many years, the worry may not be public shame, but public finance. In other words, it may open the door to claims for PCNs (fines) to be repaid.

George Orwell's novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four

was first published in 1949.

Orwell wanted English written with clarity.

He said “Good prose is like a window pane”.

In his bleak fable of a totalitarian future Orwell imagined English replaced by “Newspeak”. "… the special function of certain Newspeak words … was not so much to express meanings as to destroy them.”

Sixty years later, "Newspeak" has been reinvented as "Spin", "Narrative", and other variations of deceptive and manipulative news management.

AUTO PILEN / ARTEC / AHC DOORKEY

[ Brief history

of Companies Interconnexions ]

"Auto Pilen was a diecast line of model cars made in Ibi, Alicante, in southeastern Spain by Pilen S.A..

Models were produced from the 1970s through the mid-1990s mostly in 1:43 scale.

A majority of the castings were inherited from French Dinky.

The company was started in the 1960s, diecasting items like colorful metal sailboats and key chains.

In the late 1980s. Pilen was apparently bought by AHC of the Netherlands.

(...)

"Pilen ceased its production in 1983, but only 5 years later, in 1988, the company was reborn with the new name Artec.

In the first catalogues from Artec, there is still place for the Pilen logo, meaning that both companies are really the same one, or at least, that Artec is the successor of Pilen."

"Around 1980 there was a Pilen connection with Holland OTO, which had taken over Dutch Efsi Toys. A 1980 Auto Pilen catalog shows many of the revered Efsi vehicles like the Model T series and many Efsi trucks continued as a line Pilen 1980 (Bras 2012).

Around 1990, there was also a connection with the Dutch diecast company AHC, which appears to have bought Holland Oto and thus Auto Pilen (Bickford 2009).

AHC has since shared dies and traditionally Pilen stamped cars can be found in both AHC and Holland OTO labeled boxes (Bickford 2009; Johnson 1998, p. 15)."

AHC, however, usually produced Volvos, of which Pilen only had a few: the DAF based 66, the 480 Turbo, and the 460 and 850 sedans - most of these appear to have been developed first by AHC models before they were reverse marketed - and then also later sold as Pilens - some of which were made in Spain.

Some of these Volvos also appear to have been sold as promotional models. There were also some Nissans made by AHC/Doorkey packaged as Pilens (Bickford 2009).

With the bankruptcy of Doorkey in the early 1990s, Auto Pilen disappeared. The last new models with the Pilen name appeared at this time. "

SEAT Toledo

SEAT Toledo I

On black

Much better on white

So, for those of you who do not know NY I will tell you this... it isn't warm this time of year, in fact, it was maybe 40 degrees today. P.S. there was no sun either, that is right just a VERY long exposure.

I am not a warm weather person so-to speak-but we could use some sun.

Don't laugh at our beach I know it isn't an ocean HAHA.

I also went into the water. Not my best move considering it was 30 degrees and none of the shot would come out because I do all of these manual focus and I just couldn't get it right today.. Hard to pick a focusing target in water.

Anway here is one of the shots. It is okay, nothing to write home to mom about. All you sun shiney people take it easy on me I am a NY girl and spend very little time in the sun let alone a beach.

Bittersweet Symphony <<Cool video linky

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

Try to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die...

...Have you ever been down!?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bitter...

I dearly miss my younger brother John, he died a *very* unfortunate death, like probably thousands of others today. His wife and kids miss him even more, they need him, it's not easy at all going on without him. But they have no choice at the moment, it's *so* unjust.

Justice will prevail though, in the end. I firmly believe I will see him again, face to face in excellent shape. Yet, people keep repeating that death is a 'natural part of life'. I can only hope people will keep on thinking wheter that 'idea' is true. Meanwhile I keep on proclaiming the opposite. Stay awake, enjoy your day! :-)

Sweet...

Bitter? Yes, but not without hope. I'm so glad to be able to study what the Bible really teaches, instead of what 'religion' is trying to teach people for centuries. Listen up - if you care: Humanity, including the dead will be able to live forever on a renovated earth.

Revelation 21:3-5

I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God's home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people. He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever. 5 Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted.

1 Corinthians 15:25,26

Christ will rule until he puts all his enemies under his power, and the last enemy he destroys will be death.

Psalm 37:11

But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Preachy? A bit maybe, yes indeed. Sorry to bother you if you don't want to know. We (still) live in a free world though - most of us anyway. Away with bias and ignorance, I'd say. Enjoy your day!

I walked into my bedroom yesterday and then heard a large BOOM in the family room. I thought the cats had knocked something down. I went back to see what it was and see a bird flying away .

I quickly realize that it was a window strike by one of the pigeons that live nearby. I could not believe that the imprint on my window was so clear.

Now given my feelings of these evil doers, you might think I was happy about this occurrence? No. I wasn't. I did not see the pigeon anywhere so I assume it managed to fly away. Whether he lived or not after this horrendous strike? I don't know.

This is from outside. The window looks streaked because of some defect in the outside coating. The photo below is from inside my house.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Ukrainian: Києво-Печерська лавра, Kyievo-Pechers’ka lavra), also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery in Kiev, Ukraine. Since its foundation as the cave monastery in 1015 the Lavra has been a preeminent center of the Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. Together with the Saint-Sophia Cathedral, it is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine on August 21, 2007, based on voting by experts and the internet community.

Currently, the jurisdiction over the site is divided between the state museum, National Kiev-Pechersk Historic-Cultural Preserve, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as the site of the chief monastery of that Church and the residence of its leader, Metropolitan Volodymyr.

The Jardines del Buen Retiro or Parque del Buen Retiro (literally "Gardens" or "Park of the Pleasant Retreat"), or simply El Retiro, the "Lungs of Madrid", is the main park of the city of Madrid, capital of Spain.

The Parque del Buen Retiro is a large and popular 1.4 km² (350-acre) park at the edge of the city center, very close to the Puerta de Alcalá and not far from the Museo del Prado. A magnificent park, filled with beautiful sculpture and monuments, galleries, a peaceful lake and host to a variety of events, it is one of Madrid's premier attractions. The park is entirely surrounded by the present-day city.

In 1505, at the time of Isabella I (r. 1474–1504) the Monasterio de Jerónimos was moved from an unsuitable location elsewhere to the present site of Iglesia de San Jerónimo el Real, and a new monastery built in Isabelline Gothic style. The royal family had a retreat built as part of the church.

King Philip II (r. 1556–1598) moved the Spanish court to Madrid in 1561. Philip had the Retiro enlarged by his architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, and formal avenues of trees were laid out. Here, at the Palacio del Buen Retiro, the king could withdraw during Lent, bringing the court with him.

The "Jardines del Buen Retiro" were extended in the 1620s, when Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares, Philip IV's powerful favourite, gave the king several tracts of land in the vicinity for the Court's recreational use. Olivares determined to build, in a place that the king liked, a royal house which should be superior to those villas that Roman nobles had lately been setting up in the hillyt outskirts of Rome. Although this second royal residence was to be built in what were then outlying areas of Madrid, it was actually not far from the existing Alcázar or fortress residence, and the location in a cool, wooded area proved to be ideal.

CASTELLANO

Mercury metal in motion with bubbles & reflections of me.

Mercury - Chemical Symbol Hg, also known as quicksilver. Hg (hydrargyrum) is derived from the Greek word hydrargyros, which is a compound word meaning 'water' and 'silver' — since it is liquid like water, and yet has a silvery metallic sheen. The element was named after the Roman god Mercury, known for speed and mobility.

Bap Colognian (Kölsch) pronunciation: [/bap/] is a German rock group. With ten albums reaching the number one in the German record charts, Bap is one of the most successful rock acts in their home country.

Nearly all of Bap's lyrics are written in Kölsch, the dialect of Cologne, or more precisely in a Kölsch-influenced derivation of Eifelplatt, a regional variant of the Ripuarian language spoken in the nearby rural Eifel. Niedecken's most prominent musical influences, especially early in his career, were Bob Dylan, the Kinks, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, and Wolfgang Ambros.

The group was founded in 1976 under the name Wolfgang Niedecken's Bap in Cologne, Germany by Wolfgang Niedecken and Hans Heres. In 1981 they released their most famous song "Verdamp lang her" (English: Damn long time ago), in which Niedecken describes regrets he has about his relationship with his then recently deceased father. The band's name "BAP" derived from "BAPP", both, a play-on-words on the Kölsch word "Papp" (related to the German word Papa for dad), but pronounced differently, and Niedecken's then-times nickname.
