Lenn: Okay man!!! What am I doing here?? What's this workshop for?!! O__O What happened?!! @_@

Cíen: This is Sheryl's workshop, where she creates us, changes our look, or if happens something bad to us, she repairs us. She asked me to keep an eye on you since you broke your neck yesterday and your head felt to the floor at Ryina's place

Lenn: Huh? … my head? O__O

/

Lenn: Vale tío!!!! Que hago aquí?? Un taller de qué?!! O__O Que ha pasado??!! @_@

Lenn: Eh? ...mi cabeza? O__O

This is a view of Monterey Bay from the deck of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The clearing low clouds giving way to a spectacular blue sky reflected in the water. The brown patches in the water are kelp beds and that is a small rock on the right with a larger one inhabited by a sea lion on the left hand side of the image. The curve of the bay is seen on the horizon, the further point of land visible is Santa Cruz approximately 45 miles away travelling over land (its probably only 25 to 30 miles across the Bay but I don't have a protractor and I'm not going to find the precise distance by solving the geometry problem)

I recently returned from a week in my home town, Omaha (for Fathers Day, the College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium, music, good friends, etc).

I spent some time in parts of the Lauritzen Gardens, the 100 acre Omaha Botanical Gardens.

Captured this guy with a 200mm telephoto (unfortunately he and his friends refused to fly any closer to the edge of the marsh for a better shot).

Went for a walk in Liverpool yesterday, walking between our two Liverpool cathedrals, ending in St. James garden, which is a pretty amazing place, with dappled light from the trees, rows of tomb stones at various angles, some overgrown and some like this that have broken over the years... it looked a little sad that many of these stones that must have been from the great and good of Liverpool didnt seem to carry the care that they one would have, but it was a very atmospheric place.

Two notable features of the middle of the gardens are the William Huskisson mausoleum, for one of Liverpool's MP's, who crossed in front of a loaded passenger train to speak to the prime minister. Despite a shouted warning he was knocked down by the Rocket (you know what that is right?) which crushed his legs and he later died of his injuries, some brief details and background..

And on the east wall there runs Liverpool's only surviving running spring. Discovered by quarry workers in 1773, although I have to say although not dry didnt really appear to be running when I was there.

Notes: Marty and I played hooky yesterday. The forecast was for sun and 66 degrees (f). For January, that's a pretty rare treat for us. So we packed up our gear and headed to the beach. Or "down the shore" as we like to say in New Jersey. The temps by the ocean were not to meet the expected 60+ temps but nonetheless, it was a spectacular day out. We didn't see a lot of different or new species, sans this one.

Horned Larks have probably been there many times before, but, thanks to a guy we met out on the jetty (Thanks, Todd!) we were pointed in the right direction. I scooted on my rear end, propping my lens on my knees (with bean bag) a good 30 feet to get this shot. High sun and white sand, make for challenging shooting. I chose this image to share because the horns are so predominantly displayed.

About 3/4 the way through the day of shooting I realized I was shooting in JPG mode. Gulp. But alas, as it turned out, no harm done. It ended up making the post work, well... a breeze if you want to know the truth. Can I pull as much out of shadows, etc? No... but for a day out having fun... who cares? I think I may opt to let my camera do the heavy work next time too.

Running php tests on Mac Book Pro laptops is perfectly ok, except during testfest it took ages to run these tests

Click here, to see another view of this hawk.

Camden Hackworth of the Field Guide to the Birds gave me the following: The easiest way to tell it is a Red-Tailed Hawk (and not a Red Shouldered Hawk) is by the dark streaked belly band. The tail feathers on the back on Red Shouldered are very bold and larger than on Red Tailed. The one you have could possibly be juvenile that's why the bars on the tail can be seen instead of mostly red. I think the tail feathers bars are not bold enough to be called Red Shouldered. Also Red Shouldered Hawks don't have a belly band. You can see not a perfect line but a streaked band across the stomach which isn't seen on Red Shouldered.

Followed by Anita Gould added comments: Camden, you were right the 1st time. The banded rather than solid reddish (above) or pinkish (below) tail is characteristic of an immature. And the belly band is present on all ages, & visible on most morphs -- that's what makes it a good field mark for this species, which otherwise has extremely variable plumage.

I really appreciate their time letting us know how to tell the hawks apart. Thanks Camden & Anita!

I am not dead flickr!

Stuff has been getting repaired but now I'm back to shooting.

This is Chelsea again, I have 1 or 2 more photos of her in my stream. She's the most photogenic person I could think of so I got her to come on this shoot with me. My original plan for the shoot fell through because we couldn't find what we were looking for back in the woods so we just made due with what we found.

Be sure to check out Chelsea's stream also, she's a great photographer too.

Again photographs of flowers ... To wish you a happy day and a better weekend. Cuidaros and be happy.

The asfodelos or gamones (Asphodelus spp.) Is a genus of herbaceous perennial, biennial or perennial, born in the south and centre of Europe, have spread throughout the world today as ornamental plants, thanks to their large blooms and ease of cultivation, requiring low in nutrients, low humidity and plenty of light. They bulbosas, and several species produce tubers.

In ancient Greece, asfodelos placed in the tomb of the dead and were used in funeral ceremonies in the belief that facilitated the transit of the deceased to the Champs Elysees, believed to trim them.

Pistachio Cookie recipe: www.elise.com/recipes/archives/007330pistachio_white_choc...

Ingredients

1 cup of unsalted butter, room temperature

1 cup of sugar

1 cup of dark brown sugar, packed

2 eggs

2 tablespoons of milk

2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups of flour

1 teaspoon of baking soda

1 teaspoon of baking powder

1 teaspoon of kosher salt (regular salt will suffice)

1 cup of rolled oats

1 1/2 cups of coarsely chopped pistachios, raw and unsalted

1 1/2 cups of white chocolate chips

Method

1 Preheat the oven to 350 F. Cream the butter and sugars together on high speed for three minutes.

2 Add the eggs, milk, and vanilla and beat for 3 minutes, being sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing.

3 In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and rolled oats. Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture slowly, being sure to scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl once or twice to ensure even mixing.

4 Fold in the pistachios and white chocolate chips. Drop heaping teaspoonfuls onto parchment lined cookie sheets, add an extra pistachio or two on top of each bit of dough for decoration if desired.

5 Bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to set up on the cookie sheets before moving to a baking rack to cool completely.

Makes 6 dozen.

Pumpkin Biscotti: www.elise.com/recipes/archives/006111pumpkin_biscotti.php

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups of flour

1 cup of sugar

1 teaspoon of baking powder

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg

Pinch of ginger

Pinch of cloves

Pinch of salt

2 eggs

1/2 cup of pumpkin purée

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Method

1 Preheat oven to 350°F. Sift together the flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, and spices into a large bowl.

2 In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin purée, and vanilla extract. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the flour mixture. Give it a rough stir to generally incorporate the ingredients, the dough will be crumbly.

3 Flour your hands and a clean kitchen surface and lightly knead the dough. Lightly grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper. Form the dough into a large log, roughly about 15-20 inches by 6-7 inches. The loaves should be relatively flat, only about 1/2 inch high. Bake for 22-30 minutes at 350 F, until the center is firm to the touch. (Feel free to also form two smaller logs for cute two-bite biscotti; just cut the baking time to 18-24 minutes.)

4 Let biscotti cool for 15 minutes and then using a serrated knife cut into 1 inch wide pieces. Turn the oven to 300 F and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes. Cool completely.

Biscotti may be still a tad moist and chewy, so if you prefer it crisp let it sit uncovered overnight in a dry space. Serve and enjoy.

Makes approximately 15 cookies.

Yes, its really true. They do bell the cows in Switzerland.

Arriving here from a long trip from Asia, I was already on the road with my Flickr Friend Peru2u, in this beautiful country.

There are many interesting things about Switzerland, which many of us may have heard about. For example, that it has never fought a war in over 600 years. That it has probably the most number of banks per capita. That it has the best trained soldiers, who go on to serve the Vatican etc. etc.

Here I found one of the more well known Swiss Specialities. The belled cow. I was not suprised to see the bell on the cow, as I had heard of it before. But what surprised me was the size of the bells. Some of the cows had huge bells that were so gigantic. Its hard to believe that they actually enjoy wearing it.

PS: I have to say that these cows fed on fresh grass, are atleast 20% bigger than the cows we see in India, who feed only on old disposed newspapers or wall posters.

~ Finally made it to this cafe, it has been opened for a year, but for one reason or another I didn't go until now. They serve Intelligentsia coffee.

The Cafe's owner Paul Joo is a very friendly person, and he has extensive knowledge about his coffee.

I really liked this shop, well prepared coffee, small, but comfortable setting (they are expanding soon), humble, and great customer service. I think I'll be visiting this shop often. A great shop to get your good coffee in Koreatown, and they open late and that works great for me.

Left the house at 5:30 a.m. yesterday and got back at 8:30 p.m. A long day of shooting lighthouses in WI with a good friend and talented photographer: www.flickr.com/photos/myn91/ .

This is a shot I have wanted for a while. It is Wind Point lighthouse near Racine, WI. We shot this earlier in the day on our way north, then decided to stop here on our way back home to shoot sunset. We were finished shooting and ready to leave when I told Manuel I wanted to try one last shot. I waded back out through knee-deep snow to shoot this after the they turned on the lights that illuminate the tower at night. Next time I have to remember to get this shot just a little sooner when there is a little less contrast.

Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle. Current technologies and what Lockheed is trying to force on the Dept of Defense, for that low speed Mach 5 plane DOD gave them $1 billion to build and would disintegrate above Mach 5, is TBCC. 2 separate propulsion systems in the same airframe, which requires TWICE the airframe space to use.

Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle is 1 propulsion system cutting that airframe deficit in half, and also able to operate above Mach 10 up to Mach 15 in atmosphere, and a simple nozzle modification allows for outside atmosphere rocket mode, ie orbital capable.

Additionally, Reaction Engines maximum air breather mode is Mach 4.5, above that it will explode in flight from internal pressures are too high to operate. Thus, must switch to non air breather rocket mode to operate in atmosphere in hypersonic velocities. Which as a result, makes it not feasible for anything practical. It also takes an immense amount of fuel to function.

Advanced Additive Manufacturing for Hypersonic Aircraft

Utilizing new methods of fabrication and construction, make it possible to use additive manufacturing, dramatically reducing the time and costs of producing hypersonic platforms from missiles, aircraft, and space capable craft. Instead of aircraft being produced in piece, then bolted together; small platforms can be produced as a single unit and large platforms can be produces in large section and mated without bolting. These techniques include using exotic materials and advanced assembly processes, with an end result of streamlining the production costs and time for hypersonic aircraft; reducing months of assembly to weeks. Overall, this process greatly reduced the cost for producing hypersonic platforms. Even to such an extent that a Hellfire missile costs apx $100,000 but by utilizing our technologies, replacing it with a Mach 8-10 hypersonic missile of our physics/engineering and that missile would cost roughly $75,000 each delivered.

Materials used for these manufacturing processes are not disclosed, but overall, provides a foundation for extremely high stresses and thermodynamics, ideal for hypersonic platforms. This specific methodology and materials applications is many decades ahead of all known programs. Even to the extend of normalized space flight and re-entry, without concern of thermodynamic failure.

*Note, most entities that are experimenting with additive manufacturing for hypersonic aircraft, this makes it mainstream and standardized processes, which also applies for mass production.

What would normally be measured in years and perhaps a decade to go from drawing board to test flights, is reduced to singular months and ready for production within a year maximum.

Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle (U-TBCC)

To date, the closest that NASA and industry have achieved for turbine based aircraft to fly at hypersonic velocities is by mounting a turbine into an aircraft and sharing the inlet with a scramjet or rocket based motor. Reaction Engines Sabre is not able to achieve hypersonic velocities and can only transition into a non air breathing rocket for beyond Mach 4.5

However, utilizing Unified Turbine Based Combine Cycle also known as U-TBCC, the two separate platforms are able to share a common inlet and the dual mode ramjet/scramjet is contained within the engine itself, which allows for a much smaller airframe footprint, thus engingeers are able to then design much higher performance aerial platforms for hypersonic flight, including the ability for constructing true single stage to orbit aircraft by utilizing a modification/version that allows for transition to outside atmosphere propulsion without any other propulsion platforms within the aircraft. By transitioning and developing aircraft to use Unified Turbine Based Combined Cycle, this propulsion system opens up new options to replace that airframe deficit for increased fuel capacity and/or payload.

Enhanced Dynamic Cavitation

Dramatically Increasing the efficiency of fuel air mixture for combustion processes at hypersonic velocities within scramjet propulsion platforms. The aspects of these processes are non disclosable.

Dynamic Scramjet Ignition Processes

For optimal scramjet ignition, a process known as Self Start is sought after, but in many cases if the platform becomes out of attitude, the scramjet will ignite. We have already solved this problem which as a result, a scramjet propulsion system can ignite at lower velocities, high velocities, at optimal attitude or not optimal attitude. It doesn't matter, it will ignite anyways at the proper point for maximum thrust capabilities at hypersonic velocities.

Hydrogen vs Kerosene Fuel Sources

Kerosene is an easy fuel to work with, and most western nations developing scramjet platforms use Kerosene for that fact. However, while kerosene has better thermal properties then Hydrogen, Hydrogen is a far superior fuel source in scramjet propulsion flight, do it having a much higher efficiency capability. Because of this aspect, in conjunction with our developments, it allows for a MUCH increased fuel to air mixture, combustion, thrust; and ability for higher speeds; instead of very low hypersonic velocities in the Mach 5-6 range. Instead, Mach 8-10 range, while we have begun developing hypersonic capabilities to exceed 15 in atmosphere within less then 5 years.

Conforming High Pressure Tank Technology for CNG and H2.

As most know in hypersonics, Hydrogen is a superior fuel source, but due to the storage abilities, can only be stored in cylinders thus much less fuel supply. Not anymore, we developed conforming high pressure storage technology for use in aerospace, automotive sectors, maritime, etc; which means any overall shape required for 8,000+ PSI CNG or Hydrogen. For hypersonic platforms, this means the ability to store a much larger volume of hydrogen vs cylinders.

As an example, X-43 flown by Nasa which flew at Mach 9.97. The fuel source was Hydrogen, which is extremely more volatile and combustible then kerosene (JP-7), via a cylinder in the main body. If it had used our technology, that entire section of the airframe would had been an 8,000 PSI H2 tank, which would had yielded 5-6 times the capacity. While the X-43 flew 11 seconds under power at Mach 9.97, at 6 times the fuel capacity would had yielded apx 66 seconds of fuel under power at Mach 9.97. If it had flew slower, around Mach 6, same principles applied would had yielded apx 500 seconds of fuel supply under power (slower speeds required less energy to maintain).

Enhanced Fuel Mixture During Shock Train Interaction

Normally, fuel injection is conducted at the correct insertion point within the shock train for maximum burn/combustion. Our methodologies differ, since almost half the fuel injection is conducted PRE shock train within the isolator, so at the point of isolator injection the fuel enhances the combustion process, which then requires less fuel injection to reach the same level of thrust capabilities.

Improved Bow Shock Interaction

Smoother interaction at hypersonic velocities and mitigating heat/stresses for beyond Mach 6 thermodynamics, which extraordinarily improves Type 3, 4, and 5 shock interaction.

6,000+ Fahrenheit Thermal Resistance

To date, the maximum thermal resistance was tested at AFRL in the spring of 2018, which resulted in a 3,200F thermal resistance for a short duration. This technology, allows for normalized hypersonic thermal resistance of 3,000-3,500F sustained, and up to 6,500F resistance for short endurance, ie 90 seconds or less. 10-20 minute resistance estimate approximately 4,500F +/- 200F.

*** This technology advancement also applies to Aerospike rocket engines, in which it is common for Aerospike's to exceed 4,500-5,000F temperatures, which results in the melting of the reversed bell housing. That melting no longer ocurrs, providing for stable combustion to ocurr for the entire flight envelope

Scramjet Propulsion Side Wall Cooling

With old technologies, side wall cooling is required for hypersonic flight and scramjet propulsion systems, otherwise the isolator and combustion regions of a scramjet would melt, even using advanced ablatives and ceramics, due to their inability to cope with very high temperatures. Using technology we have developed for very high thermodynamics and high stresses, side wall cooling is no longer required, thus removing that variable from the design process and focusing on improved ignition processes and increasing net thrust values.

Lower Threshold for Hypersonic Ignition

Active and adaptive flight dynamics, resulting in the ability for scramjet ignition at a much lower velocity, ie within ramjet envelope, between Mach 2-4, and seamless transition from supersonic to hypersonic flight, ie supersonic ramjet (scramjet). This active and dynamic aspect, has a wide variety of parameters for many flight dynamics, velocities, and altitudes; which means platforms no longer need to be engineered for specific altitude ranges or preset velocities, but those parameters can then be selected during launch configuration and are able to adapt actively in flight.

Dramatically Improved Maneuvering Capabilities at Hypersonic Velocities

Hypersonic vehicles, like their less technologically advanced brethren, use large actuator and the developers hope those controls surfaces do not disintegrate in flight. In reality, it is like rolling the dice, they may or may not survive, hence another reason why the attempt to keep velocities to Mach 6 or below. We have shrunken down control actuators while almost doubling torque and response capabilities specifically for hypersonic dynamics and extreme stresses involved, which makes it possible for maximum input authority for Mach 10 and beyond.

Paradigm Shift in Control Surface Methodologies, Increasing Control Authority (Internal Mechanical Applications)

To date, most control surfaces for hypersonic missile platforms still use fins, similar to lower speed conventional missiles, and some using ducted fins. This is mostly due to lack of comprehension of hypersonic velocities in their own favor. Instead, the body itself incorporates those control surfaces, greatly enhancing the airframe strength, opening up more space for hardware and fuel capacity; while simultaneously enhancing the platforms maneuvering capabilities.

A scramjet missile can then fly like conventional missile platforms, and not straight and level at high altitudes, losing velocity on it's decent trajectory to target. Another added benefit to this aspect, is the ability to extend range greatly, so if anyone elses hypersonic missile platform were developed for 400 mile range, falling out of the sky due to lack of glide capabilities; our platforms can easily reach 600+ miles, with minimal glide deceleration.

Southern Region Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2 no 34067 Tangmere.

On the Taunton to Canterbury via Folkesoine Harbour outing.

Possibly the last Steam Train on this line before it is removed.

This is a train with a real ‘wow’ factor that any steam enthusiast would not want to miss on a circular tour of over 200 miles hauled by Southern Railway Battle of Britain Pacific No 34067 ‘Tangmere’ complete with the Golden Arrow regalia. The highlight of the day being the 1 in 30 climb up the soon to be closed branch from Folkestone Harbour.

The Golden Arrow was a luxury train of the Southern Railway and later British Railways that linked London with Dover, where passengers took the ferry to Calais to join the Flèche d’Or of the Chemin de Fer du Nord and later SNCF that took them onto Paris.

The Eleanor crosses were 12 originally wooden, but later lavishly decorated stone, monuments, of which three survive intact, in a line down part of the east of England. King Edward I had the crosses erected between 1291 and 1294 in memory of his wife Eleanor of Castile, marking the nightly resting-places along the route taken by her body as it was taken to London. Several artists worked on the crosses, as the "Expense Rolls" of the Crown show, with some of the work being divided between the main figures, sent from London, and the framework, made locally. William of Ireland was apparently the leading sculptor of figures

The Northampton cross is still standing at the edge of Delapré Abbey; the King stayed at nearby Northampton Castle. This cross was begun in 1291 by John of Battle. He worked with William of Ireland to carve the statues: William was paid £3 6s. 8d. per figure.

The cross is octagonal in shape and set upon some steps - the present ones are replacements. It is built in three tiers and originally had a crowning terminal - possibly a cross. It is not known when this became lost. A local anecdote says that it was knocked off by a low flying aircraft from a nearby airfield in WWII.

The Cross is referred to in Daniel Defoe's a "Tour through the whole island of Great Britain", where he reports on the Great Fire of Northampton in 1675, "...a townsman being at Queen's Cross upon a hill on the south side of the town, about two miles (3 km) off, saw the fire at one end of the town then newly begun, and that before he could get to the town it was burning at the remotest end, opposite where he first saw it."

Its bottom tier features open books. These probably included painted inscriptions of her biography and of prayers for her soul to be said by viewers, now lost.

This Veritas RS was purchased by the current owner in 2001 from the assets of its deceased owner Björn Övre. Mr. Övre was a collector of Veritas and early BMW cars who has purchased already in the 1950s and 1960s several Veritas cars in Belgium and imported them to Norway. He was indeed well known in Veritas circles and often a most welcomed guest at Veritas meetings at Meßkirch and at the Nürburgring. Sadly his intention to restore 61651 after retiring did not happen due to his untimely death.

After being in the now vendors ownership the car was completely restored by German specialist Georg Thiele and a photographic documentation of the restoration is available in the cars file. This restoration included restoring the original space frame, front and rear axles, wheels, braking system and fitting of new shock absorbers, rebuilt engine with new pistons, polished con rods, new oil and water pumps (by Feierabend) and a 5 - speed gearbox is fitted with the original gearbox supplied. Fresh paint and seats trimmed in the traditional style finish the car.

Today 61651 presents itself in superb race and road ready condition. This car campaigned in many classic races, rallies and classic outings all over Europe within the last 10 years while in the ownership of its current custodian, himself a well known pre - and post war BMW collector and is in mint condition throughout. Needless to say that it is highly collectible, very rare and simply beautiful, certainly not to be missed.

Taking a break from the coastal brown bears, I reflected back on the many bald eagle sightings that we were afforded on this trip. This is a shot of one of the eagles that we woke up to one morning right outside of our campground on Homer Spit, affectionately referred to as the "spit" by locals.

Homer is a wonderful artist community on the Kenai Peninsula. I have previously posted shots from there, including the "spit" itself and views across Kachemak Bay. It is by far one of the most beautiful towns in Alaska and a personal favorite of mine. It was the home of the infamous "Eagly Lady" and the site of most of the magnificent bald eagles shots in North America.

After our Katmai NP adventure, we camped out on Homer Spit. Upon waking up, it was such a gorgeous day so I wanted to take a walk on the shore (aka our backyard), so off I went armed with nothing but my sunglasses. I quickly had to retreat for my ammunition - my Nikon D300 and a nice long lens to shoot with. Why? Because there sat a pair of bald eagles basking in the sunlight.

This one was perched up on this rock, just looking off in the distance, so beautiful. I began to approach it more closely (from an angle, not direct). Others saw what I was shooting and began to approach them head on. I started shooting immediately, figuring that they would vacate the area quickly, but to my surprise, that wasn't the case. Respectfully I began to get closer myself. Both eagles never altered their behavior. When I got as close as I wanted to, in other words to where I could still get the entire eagle in, I sat down in the sand and shot away.

The bald eagle is the eagle unique to North America and is our national bird. It thrives in Alaska, where it is estimated that over 1/2 of all bald eagles live.

We do get to see numerous bald eagles in Florida, but not usually from this close of a range.

What a wonderful treat to see and spend time with - in my "backyard", even if it's my backyard for just a few days.

Thanks so much for your views and comments to my photostream. Both are appreciated! There will be more bear shots coming, but not for the next few days.
