Raccoon ~ From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ~The raccoon (Listeni/ræˈkuːn/, Procyon lotor), sometimes spelled racoon, also known as the common raccoon, North American raccoon, northern raccoon and colloquially as coon, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. The raccoon is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in) and a body weight of 3.5 to 9 kg (8 to 20 lb). Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense underfur which insulates against cold weather. Two of the raccoon's most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws and its facial mask, which are themes in the mythology of several Native American tribes. Raccoons are noted for their intelligence, with studies showing that they are able to remember the solution to tasks for up to three years. The diet of the omnivorous raccoon, which is usually nocturnal, consists of about 40% invertebrates, 33% plant foods, and 27% vertebrates.

The original habitats of the raccoon are deciduous and mixed forests, but due to their adaptability they have extended their range to mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and urban areas, where some homeowners consider them to be pests. As a result of escapes and deliberate introductions in the mid-20th century, raccoons are now also distributed across the European mainland, the Caucasus region and Japan.

Though previously thought to be solitary, there is now evidence that raccoons engage in gender-specific social behavior. Related females often share a common area, while unrelated males live together in groups of up to four animals to maintain their positions against foreign males during the mating season, and other potential invaders. Home range sizes vary anywhere from 3 hectares (7 acres) for females in cities to 50 km2 (20 sq mi) for males in prairies. After a gestation period of about 65 days, two to five young, known as "kits", are born in spring. The kits are subsequently raised by their mother until dispersal in late fall. Although captive raccoons have been known to live over 20 years, their average life expectancy in the wild is only 1.8 to 3.1 years. In many areas, hunting and vehicular injury are the two most common causes of death.

Love these soft, pink "clouds" of flowers. They come in different colours and are favoured by butterflies. Seen and photographes in Jardim Botânico de Curitiba, Paraná, Brasil

Calliandra is a genus of about 200 species of flowering plants in the family Fabaceae, subfamily Mimosoideae, native to tropical and subtropical regions of southern Asia, Africa, Australia and the Americas. The genus comprises herbaceous perennial plants, shrubs and rarely small trees growing 0.5-6 m tall, with bipinnate leaves. The flowers have numerous long slender stamens, and are produced in cylindrical or globose inflorescences; the stamens give rise to the common name of Powder-puff/ Powder puff Plant and Fairy Duster.These plants flower all year round, but the best blooming is in spring and summer. They can be easily pruned.

Efesto, figlio di Zeus ed Hera, era il dio del fuoco, della tecnologia, dei fabbri, degli artigiani, degli operai, degli scultori, dei metalli e della metallurgia.

Particolarmente adorato ad Atene e nella Magna Grecia, la sua fucina si pensava fosse collocata sotto il cono vulcanico dell'isola di Vulcano, o sotto l'Etna.

Aveva ben poco dell'aspetto divino dei suoi parenti Olimpi, dato che passava gran parte del suo tempo nella fumosa fucina da fabbro, aiutato dai giganti, tuttavia era sposato ad Afrodite, la più bella tra le belle.

Era zoppo a causa di una caduta dall'Olimpo, scagliato dall'alto dei cieli da Hera, scandalizzata nell'aver dato alla luce un bambino dall'aspetto non divino. Egli precipitò per giorni e giorni, precipitando poi nell'Oceano, dove venne allevato da Teti.

Le sue vendette erano tremende: per vendicarsi della madre la imprigionò per mesi a tradimento in un trono d'oro dopo avergliene fatto gentile dono. Una volta, stufo dei continui tradimenti della moglie, la imprigionò nel letto con il suo amante Ares e chiamò tutti gli dei a riderne.

E' tuttavia un dio molto richiesto dagli altri dei per la sua bravura nel fabbricare gioielli ed armi.

Rupit, Barcelona (Spain).

Rupit and Pruit (in Catalan Rupit i Pruit) are a municipality of the region of Osona located to the northeast of the region and the east of the Sierra de Cabrera. It is integrated by two urban nuclei: Rupit and Pruit, that they were independent until year 1980. It is the last town of the province of Barcelona in the highway that unites the municipalities of Vic, capital of the region of Osona and Olot, capital of the region of the Garrotxa (Girona).

The origin of the town we found in the castle that was constructed around year 1000, replacing the one of Fàbregues, where they went constructing houses around.

In 14th century the population underwent a reduction but it recovered, arriving in 17th and 18th centuries at the maximum splendor that has never had the town. The church was possibly built between 13th and 14th centuries, and it was dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel.

Pruit already names in year 955, when it belonged to viscounts of Osona. Always there is been united to the castle and jurisdiction of Rupit.

A Christchurch Fourth

U.S. Embassy Wellington celebrated a special Fourth of July in Christchurch, where Ambassador David Huebner honored seven New Zealanders for the courage and commitment they had shown helping evacuate a large American delegation in the immediate aftermath of the devastating February 22 earthquake.

About 150 guests attended the ceremony, designed to show solidarity with the struggling city and to signal that Christchurch is open for business. Minister of Conservation Kate Wilkinson thanked Ambassador Huebner for hosting the event and giving Cantabrians a semblance of normality by having something to celebrate. The event was hosted in the northwest of the city in one of the few locations still able to cater to a larger party.

A large delegation of U.S. government leaders, businesspeople, and academics was in Christchurch for the U.S.-New Zealand Partnership Forum on February 22, 2011. The delegation was spread throughout the city when the earthquake struck. In the chaotic aftermath it became imperative to locate, gather, and evacuate the delegation -- something that would have been simply impossible without the dedicated courage of many, many people.

"The stoic professionalism of so many in the face of so much ensured that our American visitors were superbly looked after that day," Ambassador Huebner said.

"It was for that reason, and to acknowledge that Christchurch is still functional and open for business, that we decided to hold an Independence Day ceremony in Christchurch," Ambassador Huebner said. "We wanted not only to thank everyone involved that day, but to underscore the long and deep friendship between the United States and the people of New Zealand in general and Christchurch in particular."

Canterbury has suffered thousands of aftershocks in recent months and two large ones in mid-June that further rattled the nerves of its citizens and damaged many more buildings.

Honored by the Ambassador were bus drivers who stuck with their vehicles and transported Americans back to safety at the U.S. Antarctic Center, members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force who assisted with the evacuations, and a local senior constable from the New Zealand Police who remained with U.S. Embassy staff who performed American Citizen services in the week after the earthquake.

The Very Rev. Peter Beck, dean of the now-crumbled Christ Church Cathedral, thanked Ambassador Huebner for what he described as a "very moving" event. He pointed out that the last formal service at the Cathedral, the iconic heart of the city, had been on the evening before the opening of the U.S.-New Zealand Partnership, which many members of both delegations attended.

Cited for their "unwavering courage and commitment" with the American Ambassador's Exemplary Service award were: Simon McKenzie, driver, Leopard Coach; John Goldie, driver, VIP Transport, Visits and Ceremonial Office; Heather Caspersen, driver, VIP Transport, Visits and Ceremonial Office; Flight Lieutenant Vaughn Jones, RNZAF; Warrant Officer Warren Tyndall, RNZAF; Squadron Leader Andy Scott, RNZAF; and Senior Constable Thomas "Blue" Young, New Zealand Police.

Artist Statement

The platters I have sent to this exhibition combine several ceramic traditions. The first is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots were made to demonstrate wealth and power. They were made to tell a story, to commemorate an event or a person, and to demonstrate skill and challenge the abilities of the artisans who made them. The second tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters were a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The third and last tradition is the One-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.

Humor through the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a tradition as old as the use of the material. I have always felt that humor has been given short shift as a serious emotion. Art work that uses humor and has been actively excised from collections of serious art. It may be that we do not understand the function of humor as well as we understand the function of the other emotions.

In the work presented I have tried to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative object. The platters are big to give them a slightly overblown sense of their own importance and to be able to be viewed from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the table. The large size to fit the importance of large gatherings.

I have tried to replace historical patterns with objects reduced to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my environment or reflections of personal interests. Images of turn of the century technology, (the Machine Age), are a personal favorite. Subject matter ranges from humorous depiction of everyday objects to gender stereotypes. My abilities as A draftsman are limited but seem to be adequate for the kind and quality of image that the subject requires. They have a cartoon look as opposed to the crisp complexity of fine china.

The clay body, a red earthenware, is heavily potted and makes no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica style and is done very much like a watercolor on soft paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may have an additional firing to Cone 018 for low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere using an electric kiln.

took several shots from the sidewalk. there was a crowd of indian people chatting to the right of me. so i got this view - sewer on my shot.. wasn't trying to be prejudice by saying "indian people". i could tell they were - maybe pakistani - who knows. women wore their nice dresses or wrap. they were just loud! and i didn't understand what they were speaking....

"look at this idiot here trying to take a pic of the sewer!. ha - hah...." (translated in english) - one indian or pakistani man probably said to his friends and family....

lol.... who knows what they said about me..

my family were taking a walk & when they say me they thought i was part of them... they were laughing. "we can't tell if that was you. lol", they said.... (it's my dark skin) it was funny...

but i wish i was on the other side though after looking @ my pics....... it's crappy..

Wladimir et Isabelle travaillent tous deux aux Archives nationales. La venue d'un deuxième enfant les conduit à s'interroger sur les possibilités de trouver un logement légèrement plus grand.

Pour cela, il faudra explorer toutes les pistes...

Première étape, les agences immobilières. Du centre de Paris aux arrondissements périphériques, à quelle superficie prétendre lorsqu'on jouit d'un peu plus de 3000 euros de revenu mensuel ? Visites, rencontres, discussions, négociations... Brice, responsable immobilier dans le 18e arrondissement de Paris "joue la vérité des prix". Alors que d'autres laissent miroiter comme possible ce qui se révèle illusoire aux yeux de notre jeune couple, celui-ci ne cache pas qu'aujourd'hui Paris est devenue, comme la plupart des grandes villes de France, une cité interdite pour les travailleurs qui n'ont pour vivre que le produit de leur travail, souvent réduit à un salaire qui n'a pas suivi le coût de la vie, notamment de la spéculation qui a frappé l'immobilier...

Et le logement social ? Dans la file d'attente d'une mairie d'arrondissement à Paris, confrontation entre Wladimir et quelques demandeurs de logement dont la fiche technique laisse perplexe. Rencontre avec un public concerné, "jeunes ou vieux, français ou étrangers, travailleurs ou retraités". Révélations de la responsable du logement. Les ventes à la découpe allongent les listes. My Gibson SG is getting a makeover by lightpainter

I recently acquired a Gibson SG Special in bad shape. I took it to a luthier to see what could be done. It turned out that besides the finish, the guitar is fine. Rick Mullen, the luthier, and I decided to do a makeover. He striped off the old finish, sanded it down a hair and is refinishing it in dark green satin. I chose dark green because I love the color and thought it would look good with the ebony fretboard. Most SGs are either cherry, black, or white. This should turn out to be a very unique looking instrument.

Rick, besides being a luthier, is also a bass player and played with Commander Cody for many years. If you live in the Hudson Valley region and love guitars, a trip to his workshop is well worth the trip.

Tragedy at Six Bells

My father worked in the colliery all his life and I sort of followed him into the pit. I went to work in Six Bells Colliery at 17 years of age.

When I first went on the 0.18 coal face as a collier's helper I was introduced to my 'batty' Reggie Poe who showed me the tools we were using and two chalk marks 15 yards apart on the coal face. This was our working place, 15 yards long by 4-foot-6 deep by 5 feet high. I thought 'bloody hell' - it seemed a huge amount of coal to shift.

Although the other coal faces in our district were more modern with hydraulic roof supports, we were still using the older friction posts and linked bars. I've still got the scars where one of the bars came down on me!

We had quite a few problems with gas on the 0.18 coal face and the dust was killing. At times the conveyor would start up and you couldn't see each other until the dust settled down.

As boys we often refused to go onto the face because of the amounts of dust there - being youngsters we stuck together even when the officials threatened to send us home. It wasn't much of a threat as I was only earning about £6 odd!

I had been working about two years when the explosion happened. I was working on the 0.18 face at Six Bells on the 'turning shift' and arrived at the colliery on the bus to see the place in turmoil and heard that an explosion had happened. As the explosion had occurred at our place of work, we offered to go down and help as we knew the place, but the Rescue Brigade had it under control and wouldn't let us go down.

It's hard to say my feelings about it all. We knew there was gas there and they said a spark had set it off. I had mostly enjoyed the colliery up to then. I remember four of the men who died - I used to give them snuff with powdered bark mixed in as a joke - there was a good spirit amongst the men at the pit.

Once the explosion had happened it put me off. I finished and I put my notice in soon after. I was too young to lose my life in the colliery. If I had been working the day shift that week it would have been me. The explosion opened my eyes to the dangers and I went into the construction industry instead - I was always good with my hands. The pit made me grow up.

The deaths of 45 men killed 50 years ago in a colliery explosion have been remembered with a service at the site.

A gas explosion ripped through the Six Bells colliery near Abertillery, Blaenau Gwent at 10.45am on 28 June 1960.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, led a service of remembrance at the site.

He also unveiled a memorial to the tragedy, a 20m high sculpture of a miner by Sebastian Boyesen.

Recently returned from two days spent at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and this is one of many photos I took while there. We stayed at the historic El Tovar Hotel, situated just along the rim - what a great location! I hadn't been to the Grand Canyon in 15 years and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the breath-taking landscapes once again.

INFORMATION ON THE GRAND CANYON:

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.

Longstanding scientific consensus has been that the canyon was created by the Colorado River over a six million year period. The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 km) and attains a depth of over a mile (1.83 km) (6000 feet). Nearly two billion years of the Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. The canyon began in the west, followed by another that formed in the east. Eventually, the two broke through and met as a single majestic rent in the earth some six million years ago. The merger apparently occurred where the river today bends to the west, in the area known as the Kaibab Arch.

Before European immigration, the area was inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon ("Ongtupqa" in Hopi language) a holy site and made pilgrimages to it. The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540.

The Grand Canyon is a massive rift in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata, and is also one of the six distinct physiographic sections of the Colorado Plateau province. The Grand Canyon is unmatched throughout the world for the vistas it offers to visitors on the rim. It is not the deepest canyon in the world — Cotahuasi Canyon (11598 feet or 3535 m) and Colca Canyon (10499 feet or 3200 m), both in Arequipa, Peru, and Hells Canyon (7,993 feet or 2436 m) on the Oregon-Idaho border, are all deeper — but Grand Canyon is known for its overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. Geologically it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed in the walls of the canyon. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.

About 600 deaths have occurred in the Grand Canyon since the 1870s. Some of these deaths occurred as the result of overly zealous photographic endeavors, some were the result of airplane collisions within the canyon, and some visitors drowned in the Colorado River. Many hikers overestimate their fitness level, become dehydrated and confused, and must be rescued. The Park Service now posts a picture of an attractive and fit young man at several trailheads with the caption "Every year we rescue hundreds of people from the Canyon. Most of them look like him", in an attempt to discourage hikers from feats which are beyond their abilities.

According to Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon, 50 fatalities have resulted from falls; 65 deaths were attributable to environmental causes, including heat stroke, cardiac arrest, dehydration, and hypothermia; 7 were caught in flash floods; 79 were drowned in the Colorado River; 242 perished in airplane and helicopter crashes (128 of them in the 1956 disaster mentioned below); 25 died in freak errors and accidents, including lightning strikes and rock falls; 47 committed suicide; and 23 were the victims of homicides.

Esta actividad lúdico-deportiva se basa en la simulación de combates usando réplicas de armas reales (las cuales disparan pequeñas bolas de plástico de 6 u 8 mm) en escenarios de juego similares a los de una guerra real, con equipamiento de radiocomunicación, visores nocturnos, linternas adaptadas, punteros láser, bolas trazadoras e indumentaria militar. Las bolas empleadas tienen una velocidad de salida aproximada de 90 m/s (en una replica genérica sin modificar). El poco peso de las mismas (entre 0,2 y 0,8 g) hace que su alcance efectivo no vaya más allá de los 20-80 m. Existe una modalidad de jugador, el sniper o francotirador, al que se le permite más potencia y alcance (90 metros o más en algunos casos), dado el rol que asume.

SELF-PORTRAITR: AN INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION CURATING THE FLICKR.COM

COMMUNITY

June 30 through August 25, 2006

Pace/MacGill Gallery and the School of Visual Arts’ graduate photography department are pleased to present an interactive exhibition of self-portraits drawn from Flickr.com, the online digital photo-sharing network. Flickr’s user base consists of over one million members who share images and image-related information. Two leading forces in the New York art world—-a major photography gallery and a top art school—-have joined together to observe this online conversation of image making.

The mining and showcasing of this material strives to engage and expand a rapidly growing virtual arts community. The exhibition will be accessible to both viewers and contributors alike via the Pace/MacGill website www.pacemacgill.com. Pace/MacGill’s gallery space will house ten computers on which visitors can peruse the pictures gathered from numerous global photographers as they would online. A few monitors will display slideshows of images specifically collected via the gallery website.

The exhibition will not only rely on the Flickr community for content, but will also depend upon the activity of the site’s users for the organization and editing of what is anticipated to be thousands of images from the age-old genre of self-portraiture. Whether the image is taken by a professional photographer overseas or by an amateur experimenting with a camera phone in New York City, each image posted on Flickr and “tagged” as a self-portrait will automatically be filtered and directed into the exhibition.

The Pace/MacGill Flickr interface, created by SVA’s Jeremy Chien and Stephen Jablonsky and programmed by Kelvin Luck, allows users to vote for favorites, track the most viewed image, and create categories. Sorting options or subcategories (self portrait “with mirror” or at “beach,” for example) within the virtual exhibition will enable further definition and refinement.

The work in the exhibition will perpetually expand with the proliferation of users until the popularity of each category aids in its editing. As more images are collected and more users are interacting with the site to make selections, the work will become more discerning and interesting. One can choose the role they wish to assume: curator, artist, etcetera. With every click of the mouse, viewers become participants; the interactive community defines the exhibition. The hope is that the final result will be a 50 print exhibition of images chosen by the community.

The School of Visual Arts is widely recognized as one of the finest art schools in the country for its innovative and experimental program philosophies, its participation in the cultural life of New York City, and its unparalleled faculty comprised of professional artists. The MFA Photography, Video and Related Media department has been a leader in the implementation of photography in the digital world. The exhibition has been assembled by Pace/MacGill Gallery, Jeremy Chien, and Stephen Jablonsky. Chien and Jablonsky are both alumni and faculty members at the School of Visual Arts’ MFA program in Photography, Video and Related Media. UK web developer Kelvin Luck programmed the exhibition software to search, filter and explore Flickr.com.

Gallery summer hours are: Monday-Thursday, 9:30-5:30, and Friday, 9:30-4:00. The gallery will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Summer hours begin on June 20 and continue through Labor Day.

James which he goes by is his middle name and he does not say he is Jesus but at first glance he sure does look like him, wearing only a robe and walking the country barefoot, James has traveled to 47 states and several different countries. With only a bible and his toothbrush. He doesnt use money and wont accept it, he lives off of what he is given.

So today i was killing a hour before i had to pick my father up from a meeting and i saw a man who looked like Jesus walking down a major road bare foot, so having my camera on me i instantly turned around and snapped some shots of him while he was walking. I then decided to get out of the car and talk to him, i talked to him for almost a hour and even walked about a mile with him as he was heading to Tampa.

He never once pressed Religion on me, he asked about my beliefs but never went further than that, i then brought it up later on. He was the most warm hearted man i have ever met in my life and if anyone ever see him, i really think you should take the time to talk to him.

I am not a very religious person and its a rather hot topic with me, but after speaking with him i feel my spiritual beliefs have become more open.

Thank you James and i hope to see you again in the future, my prayers are with you on your Journey.

The Panagia Eleousa Monastery of Sindi is situated on the west bank of the Xeros river and was built around 1500, restored in the 18th century and renovated between 1994 and 1997 for which renovation it won the Europa Nostra Award in 1997.

The following is an excerpt from the book “Medieval Cyprus: A Guide to the Byzantine and Latin Monuments” by Gwynneth der Parthog published by Moufflon publications, which is highly recommended to anyone interested in this aspect of the history and culture of Cyprus.

“The monastery stands near the river, sheltered by the surrounding hills. Remains of cells and offices occupy three sides of a fairly spacious courtyard, the church itself being on the south side. The church is quite arresting: lofty, well-constructed, a ground-span of 15 by 6 metres and a high octagonal lantern with four lights under a tile covered dome - an astonishing monument to come upon in such a remote place. It has a tall three-sided apse containing a sizeable window under a hooded dripstone. Two of the three doorways have similar hoods: the immense main entrance from the courtyard, and the one at the west end. The smaller south door, now blocked, has a plain rectangular frame with a curiously built double lintel - a mid-18th-century style also found at the Tekke in Larnaka and at Arpera church. The walls are buttressed on the north and south. Inside is a single, lofty aisle, austere and impressive; in the apex of the west wall, a round window. The only ornament is the beautiful screen which divides the nave from the bema, glowing with icons. The screen itself is of plain ungilded walnut and its design of dragons, vines and flowers follows that of the 16th-century original. Part of this earlier screen is now displayed in the Kykko museum. The poor state of the monastic buildings necessitated a certain amount of rebuilding, especially on the east side; while, on the north side, the synod hall, refectory and kitchen have been carefully resored. In the centre of the yard is a deep, stone-lined well.

Sindi was erected on land belonging to a Latin overlord named Gautier de Moine and could well have been occupied first by Latin monks. During the Turkish period, it was put under the protection of Kykko monastery, which sent its own monks down. When the Russian Orthodox monk Barsky visited in 1735, he wrote that only three monks lived, the small amount of land unable to sustain more. He records that the monastery was thriving and possessed two water mills, one on either side of the river, a few fruit trees and land for growing corn.”

Erie Pride Parade & Rally a Great Time!

On Saturday, August 27, about 230 people participated in the Erie Pride Parade & Rally. This year’s Pride events were organized by the Pride Planning committee, which is an informal coalition of groups and individuals.

Parade

About 100 people marched in the parade from the Zone Dance Club to Perry Square. John Daly King was the Grand Marshal for the parade, in a convertible driven by Caitlyn. Also in the parade were beloved local gay icons Jesse and Ricardo, who rode their tandem bike.
