Peas are one of those crops that are well worth growing in the garden. Though they don't produce as much per square foot as other crops, the taste of freshly picked peas is well worth the space and effort. You simply can't beat the taste of freshly shelled garden peas or super sweet snow peas.

Most children love fruits like banannas or applesauce for their first foods. Not my little Petra...she's a veggie only girl. Her favorite food at the moment is peas!
It's a few weeks later than we normally do our pea planting, but today we finally had a convergence of warmer weather and no snow in the garden. The top half of the raised bed's soil was workable, but a few inches down the soil was still frozen. It's literally spring! Come on, garden! Anyway, this onerous task took a grand total of about 10 minutes, including time to take some pictures, and it's left us with a feeling of garden accomplishment. Before we know it, this is going to be a tangle of delicious green, right? Right??
Seed saving has been a priority this season, bulking up our little kitchen garden seed bank, tucking away our favourites at a time when unpredictable shortages spill across all industries so that we can continue to plant and harvest our favourite crops and share with our community. A lot of evenings lately have been spent sitting with a cup of tea, threshing, while simultaneously processing the harvest in the background. The girls have been gardening with me their entire lives, I’ve wanted them to understand where food comes from, how it grows, the full cycle of wonder and abundance- a single dormant pea, buried in the soil, developing into a climbing vine with hundreds of pods, each full of nourishing peas, the plant improving nitrogen levels in the soil as it grows… something of a miracle, the nourishment that is provided by a single seed, it never really ceases to amaze me. Having a significantly larger garden here than at our old house makes seed saving more possible. I try to make the most of each micro season within the growing period with much succession planting as well as replanting crops for Spring, early summer, mid summer, fall and into the winter garden- allowing plants like peas which require time to fully dry out before pulling up - wasn’t as easy in a smaller space where I was continually planting the next crop, grateful for the space to be able to devote more area to the full development of seed. #seedsaving #kitchengarden #organicgardening #growyourown #eatwhatyougrow #nourishingtraditions #nourish #nutrition
