Autumn 2006: Sweet peas are the first crop to go into one of the raised garden beds. Pea plants are great for fixing nitrogen to the soil.

These can slightly better with each attempt, although I have no idea how, because they are perfection to start off with.

To my surprise some of the peas are ready for picking!! These are shelling peas and, as always, when I shell some peapods and see the results I literally cannot believe how inexpensive frozen peas are. That yield is about 1 tablespoon. I haven't eaten any yet, but Tabby seems to be gobbling them up so I'd better get my hands on them!

This is the first year I've tried growing sweet peas, planted from seed in what was an unused part of the border bed below my bedroom window. Photo taken in the harsh morning shadows before heading to work.

- 1.25 Kg frozen peas (mint optional), 250g reserved for end

- 2L Stock (chicken, vegetable or mix)

- 800g streaky bacon, diced small, 200g reserved for end

- Parsley, garlic and pepper to taste

- 2x onions (optional, no preference)

- 2 tbsp cornflour (incorporate with small amount of the soup before introducing to main pot)

- 300ml water (after blending, bring to boil)
