From the New Moosewood Cookbook. We really craved samosas this weekend, so we decided... what the heck.
An unseasonably cold and rainy May slowed everything but the lettuce and peas. Just one week of dry sun and 70s and everything else is exploding. Now the lettuce and peas are slowing down. We have 30-40 tomatoes, about 10 zucchini. loads of little cukes, but just one bell pepper. The onions are doing well, as are a new row of carrots.

The deer ate most of my peas this spring so I don't have any peas in the freezer. I love peas in winter stews so I figured I'd try to grow a fall harvest of peas.
I'm hoping I can keep the deer out of them, I'll be putting up a fence for sure!
This is the Pea River near Elba Alabama. This is a beautiful scenic river in South Alabama. The Cypress trees make this an extra special place. Im so glad I made it to this one.
And here I am now. I've made the pea pods differently....the right is a wire-edged needlelace stumpwork from Susan O'Conner's Inspiration piece, Poppy and Peas. The right is from Jane Nicholas's stumpwork book. I decided to add a stumpwork field mouse (trying my own this time) and think I may have him a bit too golden brown. Will try to tone him down a bit today. Am anxious to get to the snail. Am thinking this just might get finished in February!!!

There is a pea in this picture that has been stung by an insect, injecting a larvae into the pea that will grow into a worm. It needs to be removed. Can you find it?

I bought some sweet peas a few days ago , shelled them and put them into some clear gelatin, one layer at a time since they float.
The only interesting thing about this shot is the gelatin envelope around the pellet. Maybe I need to make another batch of just gelatin.

There will be this amount again by next weekend! I prefer to eat peas raw in season but to freeze any surpluses in August and September.
This is a peas roti, made from green pigeon peas, cooked, mashed, seasoned and stuffed inside the dough before it's rolled out and made into roti. We generally make and are used to dhalpuri (made with yellow split peas the same way) in Trinidad, particularly commerically. But many homes in Trinidad make peas puri or peas roti also. The way they make peas dhal!
The Chickpea is both the cutest and most powerful legume of all. If the chickpea were a cartoon character, it would be a Powerpuff girl.

I rarely find Sweet Pea bouquets for sale - I was delighted to discover these - the fragrance just shouts SUMMER!

Pea is cultivated extensively now in Montana and rotated with crops such as wheat. These particular fields abut rough topography adjacent to rimrocks where native rangeland vegetations persists in good ecological condition. This population has colorful petals relative to flowers with generally white petals in domesticated Pisum sativum. Intertwining tendrils from adjacent plants allow individual stems to stand upright. This site occurs on Broyles Farms, near Rapelje, Stillwater County, Montana.
