The P-51 D variation (easily distinguished by it's bubble canopy) used a V-12 manufactured by US-based Packard Motor Company. It was a licensed version of the British Rolls Royce Merlin engine used in several WW2 fighters including earlier Mustangs.
The plane's spec'd max speed is listed at 440mph but Steve Hinton, Jr set record at 531.53mph over four consecutive passes in a highly modified P-51 Mustang Voodoo on 2 September 2017. That's faster than a modern airliner's cruising speed.

In the 1980s the Dutch P-3 Orions looked like this: large numbers and a big 'V for Valkenburg'. I took the photo in May 1985. 304 was sold to Portugal in 2006.

P-40N in the Royal Air Force Museum Hendon. This aircraft is marked up as Kittyhawk FX760 / GA-? operated by No 112 Squadron, RAF in Italy during 1944.
This is actually a composite of more than one aircraft recovered from New Guinea in 1974, although the main fuselage section is from P-40N-15CU, USAAF serial 42-106101.

Finally added a little color with the Brooks bar tape, replaced the old worn Col de la Vie tires with Hetres, and brought along the coffee for today's chilly start. Still enjoy this bike. A lot.
