As I was driving into work, the morning sun was making its way thru the mist and fog, trees are just starting to burst with color and I couldn't help myself but to pull over and take it all in. I drove up on this ridge and parked. I walked up to the open gates and noticed several small spider webs, glistening from the dew in the morning sun and started snapping away, I was very excited to see these come out so well on my iPhone. Tiny moments otherwise unwitnessed, my "stopping to smell the roses" moment.

I have taken many photos on the Lakeshore in 2021. Sometime it is good to let them lie for a while and look at them with fresh eyes. This photo got little bit colour overhaul, but otherwise it is unaltered. Call me Mr. Pragmatic, but I like the idea of a maze, so even when the weather is cold, the splash pad is still being used.

Because of the safety measures implemented during Covid-19, there is a reduced collection of downtown Springfield, Mo regulars. Some, such as these couple of skate boarders, utilize the ghost town as a surrogate for their otherwise closed usual hang-outs.

My first HFF. I never remember HFF till I see all the fence shots go up, and then it is too late. On top of things this week. The ice did a nice job of beautifying an otherwise extremely ugly fence.

Cancellations due to COVID19 allowed the opportunity to reserve and stay on short notice at lodges within several National Parks. These lodges (i.e., including Yosemite and Crater Lake) are generally impossible to reserve otherwise. The parks were fairly empty. My wife were walking back with dinner to our room when I noticed this magnificent sight. The falls were the first sight as we walked in and out of our room. The view was always impressive. However, the diminishing light minutes before sunset added a touch of mystery to this natural wonder.
BTW, I wanted to take the opportunity to inform everyone that Flickr is no longer sending notifications to Yahoo mail accounts. I only receive notices regarding promotions by Flickr. As a result, it is impossible to track and reciprocate all Faves. Sorry about that and stay healthy!

A Cypress Swamp in the Mercer Arboretum north of Houston, Texas. Though it may seem otherwise, the water level is lower than usual.
The woody knobs are "cypress knees" -- they provide these tall trees oxygen, nutrients and stability not otherwise available in the primordial ooze. A bald cypress can live up to 600 years, though there are some as old as 1,000.
Otherwise known as the River Lee in Cork, Ireland - during high tides and calm winds the river can be almost like glass. This is two photos, taken hand-held of Union Quay near sunset and stitched together into this short panorama.
Otherwise known as false dragonhead, this pretty flower lasts nearly to the end of the growing season which makes me very happy.

Dundas Square is Toronto's answer to Times Square with many advertising billboards. It is also site for outdoor concerts and festivals. It was a place for protests and demonstrations, until the authorities decided that in the name of Democracy, protests are only permitted for approved causes and for freedoms in countries far away. I was crossing the square, when the billboard above flooded the place with colour on otherwise grey drizzly day. The square was not always there. It opened in 2002 in effort to revitalize the area. To be honest, I should, but do not remember what was there before.

(otherwise Mickiewicza Waterfalls) are located at the junction of the Białka Valley and the Roztoka Valley, by the route from Palenica Białczańska to Morskie Oko. Right behind them is a crossroads with the green trail leading to the right to the Valley of Five Ponds, and to the left to the shelter in Roztoka.
Otherwise, I only photograph the Wittlich Valley in the morning, mostly in fog and sunrise.
Last week we had a thunderstorm just before sunset. When this drew off the last clouds were illuminated by the evening sun.

About an hour after sunset along the Gunpowder Falls River looking back at the Route 1 crossing of the river. This exposure helps brighten the otherwise night view ... had to walk out of here under flashlight.
Zur Freude vieler Eisenbahnfreunde bespannte am 12. Februar 2022 die mustergültig gepflegte 110 428 von TRI den Alpen-Express ab Venlo. In Wörgl wurde der Zug dann geteilt. Die blaue Bügelfalte übernahm hierbei den Zugteil nach Bischofshofen. Wie so oft entwickelte sich das Warten auf den Zug als ziemliches Geduldspiel. Mit über zwei Stunden Verspätung erreichte der DRV 13489 gerade noch rechtzeitig meinen Fotostandpunkt bei Brixen im Thale - die Sonnenstand wäre sonst nicht mehr optimal gewesen. Die frisch verschneite Hohe Salve im Hintergrund bildete den angemessenen Hintergrund für diesen klassischen Turnuszug. Man fühlt sich in längst vergangene Zeiten zurück versetzt, als die es zum Standardgeschäft der Baureihe 110 gehörte, Schizüge auf der Giselabahn zu befördern.
To the delight of many railway enthusiasts, TRI's excellently maintained 110 428 hauled the Alpen-Express from Venlo on 12 February 2022. The train was then split in Wörgl. The blue E 10 took over the train to Bischofshofen. As so often, the wait for the train turned out to be quite a game of patience. With a delay of more than two hours, DRV 13489 reached my photo location near Brixen im Thale just in time - otherwise the position of the sun would not have been optimal. The freshly snow-covered Hohe Salve in the background formed the appropriate backdrop for this classic winter sport train. One feels transported back to times long past, when it was standard business for the class 110 to haul night trains on the so-called Gisela line.
No, not that one down there in SoCal. This one exists solely in my head and in the image. Wish I was there now. Getting in some playtime with an otherwise useless shot.
Freshly painted in Loadhaul livery, 37513 heads away from Bridgend station with an empty steel train, returning from Margam to presumably Tees yard.
From a few years in the mid 1990s, most rail freight in the UK returned to a regional model where the mainland railway network was divided into three geographic regions, with each region's freight trains being operated by a different company.
Broadly, Transrail operated freight trains in the West (including Wales and Scotland), Mainline operated in the South East and the Midlands, and Loadhaul operated in the North East of England.
At the time of this image, Bridgend was solidly in Transrail territory with virtually every freight train (of which there were many) being operated by Transrail. However, this train was a surprise: a Loadhaul-operated empty steel train.
The reason for its appearance in the Principality was that the steel it had delivered to South Wales had originated at Lackenby on Teeside, which was served by Loadhaul.
This situation lasted for only a few years: starting in the summer of 1994, by the summer of 1996 all three companies had been acquired by the Wisconsin Central, and they were to merged back together again under the English, Welsh and Scottish Railways banner.
A point of interest is the advertisement in the top right of the image. Using half a Mercedes Benz to advertise 'Benz' nightclub is inspired, though having never visited the said establishment, I can't otherwise comment on the place!

The dog normally gets at least one of the two every day; often both!

We noticed a big streak in the otherwise clear sky. Looking closer there was a fast moving plane at the top. The origin was south - far south. Being the southernmost capital city in Australia this seemed unusual. So a quick check of the flight activity identified that the flight was a Qantas scenic Antarctica flight (you can see the Qantas logo clearly on the tail).

It is interesting and sometimes rewarding to reinvestigate old haunts. On land I have often passed only 20 minutes from our place on the Shuswap, someone has cleared their land of trees. This large otherwise hidden pond (or is it very small lake) was then revealed and the possibilities for work began. With an overcast day that was interspersed with pockets of blue sky, I decided to look for reflections. The tree tops were bright from the soft light above, with their bases deep in shadow. And a landscape image of symmetry across the pond, appeared.
The Harris hawk or Harris's hawk is unique amongst the raptors for hunting in family groups. This co-operative behaviour allows it to capture larger prey than would otherwise be possible.
Found from the southwestern United States down to Chile and central Argentina, Harris hawks are medium to large birds of prey with dark brown and chestnut plumage and a white-tipped tail. They occupy sparsely covered habitats including semi-desert, woodlands, marshlands and mangroves. Some individuals are sighted in Britain; however these are likely to be escapees from falconry, a purpose for which they are one of the most popular hawks.
Sometimes it's hard being the symbol of America.

Ella was the type to lean a little more towards ‘live and let live’ when given the chance, but she didn’t take lightly being cheated or otherwise done wrong. It was the principal of the thing that she tended to take issue with. Even on the wrong side of the law, she still had a moral compass, though perhaps it didn’t always point due north.
Ella had met her share of shady characters throughout her travels. There was always some degree of dishonesty to a man, she reckoned, but it was all about how much you could live with at the end of the day.
Unfortunately, they’d pin these little tin stars to just about anyone’s chest that would have them, and sadly, hiding behind that little star tended to make a slightly bent man break completely bad.
Ella could wager the lawman had no clue what he was doing when he made eyes for the dappled stud she rode into town on, and she had hard money on the fact that he had no idea what he was calling down on himself when he pulled his gun on her, telling her she’d make it to see another day if she just handed over the reins. Little did he know…
There were few things she held in high regard these days, with all the hard living she’d come to know so well, but Mille and the dappled palomino were two things she held dearest. A history of loyalty had tied them together, and it would take more than some twisted town sheriff to pull them apart.
There are times when knowing when to fold means living to see another day, and though the reins about burned her hand as she handed them over, she knew she’d be seeing the man again, and very soon.

Nothing says "summer" to me quite like the all-encompassing racket of cicadas. This year, their symphony has hit such an epic crescendo that we've had to keep the doors shut—otherwise, we can’t hear ourselves think or talk. (On second thought, maybe that’s a feature, not a bug!)
Cicadas hold the dubious honor of being the loudest insects on Earth. Some species can belt out a 120-decibel tune—louder than a rock concert and painful to human ears. The deafening din is believed to deter hungry birds, and when cicadas sing in a group, it’s harder for predators to zero in on any one unlucky performer. I’m convinced that at least half the Australian cicada population has formed a choir in the trees behind our house.
This guy here was sharing the pool with me today, having a refreshing swim, which he unfortunately never learned to do. Lucky for him I have my cicada lifesaving credentials!

Cicadas aren’t just an Aussie phenomenon — these noisy critters are found worldwide, especially in tropical regions. This year, cicada fans (yes, they exist) are buzzing about an event 1,547 years in the making! For the first time in over two centuries, two U.S. broods—the 13-year and 17-year cicadas—have emerged together. Meanwhile, down under, our beloved greengrocer cicadas, with their 7-year life cycle, are joining the party. A global jam session!
With over 200 known species in Australia and as many as 800 still waiting for scientific recognition, their singing is well known all over the country.
Trying to wrap my head around the maths and timing of these cycles is more headache-inducing than the cicada choir itself.

Seminole Gulf Railway GP9 #580 leads a healthy cut of cars from the CSX interchange near Oneco South through Tallevast toward downtown Sarasota. The Seminole Gulf's Sarasota operation normally only runs about once a week to service a handful of local customers, but is currently required to make as many as five runs a week to accommodate diverted Fort Myers bound freight traffic. The SGLR's much bigger Fort Myers operation was severely impacted by Hurricane Ian, with the Caloosahatchee River bridge having been completely wiped out and rebuilding/repairs not having been completed yet. As a result, a lot of traffic destined for customers located in Fort Myers, mainly building products and propane, has been getting transloaded onto trucks on sidings and team tracks on the Sarasota line.
SGLR 580 normally serves as the back up engine to the B39-8E that generally provides the power for the otherwise weekly Sarasota run, but is currently being called into action to handle the severe temporary increase in traffic. Both engines are needed for switching maneuvers along the line with this amount of cars and sometimes even two crews will be called. The venerable former FEC GP9 is already 69 years old, having been built all the way back in 1954, and is the only high hood Geep on the Seminole Gulf system (and I think the only GP9 period left doing freight work on the SGLR).
So it was well worth getting up at 3am to make the 4.5 hour drive and back for a day's worth of shots of this classic old unit handling the freight traffic. Thankfully the 580 made the run this day and the B39-8E was just used to aid in the switching maneuvers. Tallevast, FL (Sarasota)
This time of the year, the Harlequin Glorybower tree (otherwise known as Clerodendrum trichotomum, glorytree or peanut butter tree) is full of white and blue pearls.
