Small waxbill, adult olive green above, gray below, with red eyebrow, red bill, and black tail. In flight, bright red rump apparent. Juvenile with red rump but otherwise olive drab with dark bill. Inhabits grassy areas close to thick cover in eastern and southeastern coastal Australia. Often-heard call is a thin "seeeeep." (eBird)

Finally, one stopped moving long enough to get a photo! These beautiful finch live in large flocks and all want to land on the feeder at the same moment. This one was just contemplating his next move.

Anguloa orchid plants, otherwise known as tulip orchids or cradle orchids, are usually seen thriving in the forest floors of the high Andean regions of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. Given that their natural habitat is in the Andes Mountains, which has an elevation anywhere from 1800 to 2500 meters, the general assumption is that these orchids are expected to grow better in a cooler environment, compared to a hotter one. Anguloa orchids can be a bit hard to come by, depending on where you live. I have shot these rare orchids in San Francisco, CA .Conservatory of Flowers.

Otherwise known as the Little Banded Goshawk, this is a ferocious raptor that attacks birds in their nests and deep inside canopy. The birds are patient and will wait for the right moment to strike. Often they attack the chicks in the nests, or even the parents. The birds are common in the countryside and seen a lot, but hard to get a decent shot.
We sighted this lone bird in the grasslands trying to hunt - there was a kingfisher nearby which we expected to be attacked. But the Shikra left the kingfisher and flew away to another place.
Thanks in advance for your views and feedback Much appreciated.
Although my back and spine are making life very difficult for me at the moment, I am at least trying to work shortened hours because otherwise my project will fall on my feet....
That's why I'm going to be very quiet again for the next few days.
Every day a little more, until Friday, when I probably won't be able to do anything at all.
That's how I'm taking it step by step, this difficult road.
I wish you good last Sunday hours 😘

These high intensity lights bring a super-real enchantment to an otherwise drab State street....
With crystalline purity they bathe the sullen characters beneath them transforming them into ethereal beings...
I singled out a fragment of the city as a representation of the whole thus allowing the viewer's mind's eye to complete the scenario.
In addition, the detailed beauty of this lighting and shadows give a rather pleasing view of an otherwise grey toned urban vista...
I actually wanted to leave out the Chicago marquee in the lower right and let your brain fill in everything, but that right corner works so nicely to complete the design.
Thanks to Bernd for loaning the macro lens ☺

Literally a last minute idea which I had this morning upon waking up. Otherwise I'd have skipped, because I didn't simply want to use a random object that didn't match with four other random objects, and I also couldn't think of anything that would actually make sense as a true "misfit". But this morning, it hit me, sort of. I've watched the "The Runaways" movie just the other day, so the music is still going around in my head, and all of a sudden I thought "Why not use a guitar pick with my violin?" You don't strum a violin, and even if it's required that you play pizzicato, you won't do that with a pick, you use your fingers. And I've also always preferred Rock music of all sorts over classical music (not that I don't like the latter, but... Rock music is where the fun is, at least for me).
Now I don't play guitar, but, luckily, a guitar pick, among other things, came as a givaway with Juliana Hatfield's latest record "Blood", so I could use that (the pick is 3 cm / 1,18 inches long, and the width of the image is 4,5 cm / 1,77 inches).
The photo itself was done very quickly, kind of my version of a three chord / three minute Rock song ;) While my usual photographic approach, at least when it comes to MMs, is more like an album-long Prog "suite", doing this, trying that, I didn't bother with focus stacking or any other complicated technique or setups this time, a few shots (four in total) had to do of which this was the best. OK, so this is my version of a four minute Rock song. I hope you like it :)
Happy Macro Monday, Everyone, have a nice week ahead, and stay safe!

Dark woodpecker, inconspicuous and uncommon. Found in coniferous forests, often in recently burned areas or bogs with many dead trees. Distinctive habit of flaking bark off trees in search of grubs; behavior shared only with American Three-toed Woodpecker. Back entirely glossy black with faint white markings only on flight feathers. Head mostly black with white mustache stripe and throat. Barred flanks. Males show yellow cap; sexes otherwise alike. "Pick" call is short and has unique clicking tone unlike other woodpeckers. Drum is slow, speeding up at end. Does not visit bird feeders. (eBird)

Usually, we travel north to Algonquin Park to try and find our yearly Black-backed Woodpecker. They can be incredibly difficult to find. This year, this female decided to make Ottawa her home and has visited many of the trails within the Stony Swamp Conservation Area We finally caught up with her today.
Funny story - just as we were starting to be interested in birds, we saw a strange dark woodpecker with a little yellow cap. After chasing it around a tree with the bird guide, we id'd it as a Black-backed Woodpecker. it wasn't until years later that we realized it had a been a rare bird in Ottawa. Alas, no photos to prove our sighting.

How could it be otherwise, the river is the undisputed protagonist of the daily life of the Vietnamese. You have the possibility of going through it in one of the traditional boats or walking along the river walk of the Thu Bon river. River that runs through the city of Hoi An, it is nice to cross its waters for the simple fact of walking in a colorful boat. At night its waters are filled with offerings of light to ask for good omens.

Rio que recorre la ciudad de Hoi An, es bonito surcar sus aguas por el simple hecho de pasear en una barca llena de colorido. Otherwise known as bramble, blackberry, European blackberry, black heg, wild blackberry and bramble berry.
UK folklore dictates that blackberries should not be picked after Old Michaelmas Day in October, as the Devil has sullied them. Brambles used to be planted on graves to stop sheep grazing, but might also have had the more superstitious purpose of keeping the dead in.

A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air.

From a lookout around the UBC area, we parked to peer down on the ocean below. A serene moment, the stanchions made an interesting pattern as they interrupted an otherwise motionless ocean. A good time to catch a few colors as well as they reflected on the surface beneath the clouds.

The Red-bellied Grackle is a distinctive rare blackbird of cloud forest in the Colombian Andes. It is large, long-tailed, and heavy-billed with a bright red belly and otherwise glossy black plumage. Red-bellied Grackles moves through the forest in groups, giving a variety of calls. While it has been recorded from all three ranges of the Andes in Colombia, contemporary localities are few.

We were trying to get to Waldo Lake this past weekend. The road was suppose to be open. Okay, it was open but we didn't think we were going to need snow tires. So we got as far as the hiking trail to Betty Lake. We were, again, surprised at how much snow was still on the ground. Betty Lake sits at about 5200 feet. There is a hiking trail from Betty Lake into Waldo Lake, but we got this far and decided we are not snow hikers. There was a bit of a wind, otherwise I bet this would be a great clear lake with a nice blue green color.
A member of the beautiful sunbird family with an extra long beak and often confusing in the wrong angle since it looks like the very common Purple Sunbird. However, the beak is visibly longer with a slight curve that helps it suck nectar from flowers that require a deep beak. The breast area also sports a maroon band which is visible in this shot, but easily missed otherwise.
The bird prefers habitats around this Lion's tail flowering plant in winters and love that plant nectar. This is endemic to India and found in thick forest and woodland areas with good amount of wild flowers.
A burst of sunlight on a cloudy day gave me this nice clean shot.
