is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is located in the northwest of the country.
The historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. It is oval-shaped and about 430 hectares in size. The area of the whole city amounts to more than 13,840 hectares, including 1,075 hectares off the coast, at Zeebrugge (meaning "Brugge aan Zee" or "Bruges on Sea"). The city's total population is 117,073 (1 January 2008), of which around 20,000 live in the historic centre. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 616 km² and has a total of 255,844 inhabitants as of 1 January 2008.
Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam, it is sometimes referred to as "The Venice of the North".
Bruges has a significant economic importance thanks to its port. At one time, it was the "chief commercial city" of the world.
Origins
Very few traces of human activity in Bruges date from the Pre-Roman Gaul era. The first fortifications were built after Julius Caesar's conquest of the Menapii in the first century BC, to protect the coastal area against pirates. The Franks took over the whole region from the Gallo-Romans around the 4th century and administered it as the Pagus Flandrensis. The Viking incursions of the ninth century prompted Baldwin I, Count of Flanders to reinforce the Roman fortifications; trade soon resumed with England and Scandinavia. It is at around this time that coins appeared for the first time bearing the name Bryggia. This name may stem from the Old Norse Bryggja, meaning "landing stage" or "port", and may have the same origin as Norway’s Bryggen, a World Heritage site in the city of Bergen, which may also share the same etymology.

Waar de naam Brugge juist vandaan komt, is niet exact bekend. Mogelijk is het een verbastering van de Keltische naam voor de ondertussen gekanaliseerde rivier de Reie, die door Brugge stroomde en in de Noordzee uitmondde. Reie zelf komt van het Keltische woord Rogia, wat "Heilig Water" betekent. De Kelten beschouwden rivieren en bronnen als goddelijke wezens, en het is waarschijnlijk dat de Keltische naam aan de Brugse waterloop is blijven kleven. Door evolutie zou de naam van het water, Rogia of Ryggia, ook de naam van de stad geworden zijn, Bryggia.
Het is mogelijk dat er in latere eeuwen ook een contaminatie plaats heeft gevonden met het Oudnoordse woord bryggja, wat "landingsbrug" of "aanlegkaai" betekent. Zo waren er vanaf 800 veel contacten met Scandinavië via handel over de Noordzee en door de invallen van de Noormannen. De naam Brugge vertoont dan ook gelijkenissen met Bryggen, de historische haven van Bergen, dat net als Brugge vanaf de 14e eeuw een belangrijke stad was van de Hanze.
Minder waarschijnlijk is een oorsprong uit het woord "brug" aangezien er dan taalhistorisch eerder sprake zou zijn van Brigge (vergelijk met het Engelse bridge, Oudengelse brycg, Friese brigge of bregge, Gallische briva). Ook een oorsprong uit het woord "burcht" is eerder onwaarschijnlijk: vergelijk bijvoorbeeld met Oudenburg en Aardenburg, die net als Brugge op een belangrijke handelsweg lagen en eveneens uit een Romeinse nederzetting zijn ontstaan.
Regelmatig wordt naar Brugge verwezen als het "Venetië van het Noorden", refererend aan de vele kanaaltjes en bruggen. De meeste van deze kanaaltjes worden ook "reien" genoemd, naar de rivier de Reie. Ook wordt Brugge vaak de "Breydelstad" genoemd, naar de Brugse volksheld uit de 14e eeuw, Jan Breydel.
De bijnaam van de Bruggelingen is "(Brugse) zotten". Deze bijnaam danken ze aan volgende legende: nadat ze Maximiliaan I van Oostenrijk, in hun strijd om autonomie, voor een tijd gevangen hadden gehouden, verbood deze het houden van een jaarmarkt en andere festiviteiten. In een poging om hem te sussen, hield Brugge voor hem een groot feest en vroeg daarna de toelating opnieuw een jaarmarkt te mogen houden, belastingen te mogen innen én ... het bouwen van een nieuw zothuis. Hij antwoordde: "Sluit alle poorten van Brugge en je hebt een zothuis!".

Bruges (em neerlandês Brugge) é uma cidade belga, capital da província de Flandres Ocidental, na região de Flandres. Tem cerca de 117 mil habitantes. Foi a capital europeia da cultura em 2002, juntamente com a cidade espanhola de Salamanca.
Bruges é chamada de "Veneza do Norte", por causa de seus inúmeros canais que a cercam ou a atravessam, mas também a ligam principalmente com a cidade de Gante.
Diversos passeios de barco são propostos aos turistas, alguns dos quais permitindo chegar às cidades vizinhas. A cidade apresenta ainda as ruínas de uma fortaleza, bem como moinhos às margens dos canais.
São praticamente inexistentes traços de civilização e actividade humana anteriores à era pré-romana gaulesa na região de Bruges. As primeiras fortificações foram construídas após a conquista do Menappi por Júlio César no século I a.C., com intuito de protecção da zona costeira contra piratas. Já no século IV, a região foi tomada aos romanos pelos Francos e as incursões dos Vikings, por volta do século IX, obrigaram a que Balduíno I, Conde da Flandres, reforçasse as antigas fortificações. Foi também nesta época que se fortaleceram as relações comerciais com a Inglaterra e a Escandinávia e surgiram as primeiras moedas gravadas com o nome Bryggia (significa "porto" em neerlandês remoto).
Foi a 27 de Julho de 1128 que Bruges foi elevada a cidade e construiu novas muralhas e canais. Desde cerca de 1050, um gradual avanço do lodo em direcção da cidade, provocou a obstrução dos acessos directos com o mar, mas uma violenta tempestade em 1134 restabeleceu-os através da criação de um canal natural (Zwin).
Com o raiar do século XII, Bruges foi incluída no circuito comercial flamengo, sobretudo devido à sua emergente indústria de lã e tecidos. Os principais mercadores da cidade apostaram no desenvolvimento de "colónias económicas" em Inglaterra e na Escócia e os seus contactos trouxeram grão da Normandia e vinhos da Gasconha para a região. Os navios hanseáticos atracavam diariamente no porto que, face a este crescimento e sobrecarga, teve de ser expandido de Damme até Sluys para acomodar os novos cog-ships.

A primeira impressão de um livro em inglês foi publicada em Bruges por William Caxton. Foi igualmente uma época em que Eduardo IV e Ricardo III de Inglaterra passaram o seu exílio na cidade flamenga.

A Santos-style angel mannequin leads its newly sentient companions in imagining their origin. After reading Pinocchio and discovering an image of a woodworker carving an articulated figure, they begin to believe they were once trees shaped by human hands. An altar—marked by a tree, a workbench, and woodworking tools—honors this imagined maker. In the absence of memory, the mannequins construct a myth of creation, forging identity through fragments of literature, objects, and reverence. A pochi chilometri da Teramo, vicino al centro abitato di Canzano si trova la CHIESA DI SAN SALVATORE, che nel semplice impianto architettonico rivela la sua origine romanica. La chiesa, originariamente connessa ad un monastero e oggi ridotta a cappella cimiteriale, all'interno nasconde un prezioso ciclo di affreschi databile al XIV secolo, che gli è valso l'appellativo di "Cappella degli Scrovegni d'Abruzzo". Il ciclo mostra diverse lacune derivate dalle varie vicissitudini subite nel corso dei secoli, ed è oggi ulteriormente minacciato dal pericolo di un cedimento del tetto, che non rende possibile al momento neanche una sua fruizione da parte del pubblico e dei fedeli. Le tre navate della chiesa in origine dovevano essere completamente decorate ad affresco; oggi conservano, oltre al ciclo del XIV secolo, vari tratti di pittura murale non appartenenti ad un unica fase decorativa, ma succedutesi a partire dal XV fino al XVII secolo. Gli affreschi più antichi e di maggior pregio ripercorrono le storie della vita di Cristo e si stendono lungo la navata e il presbiterio su due registri; non tutti gli episodi sono identificabili per il cedimento dell'intonaco in larghe zone, ma partendo a sinistra dell'ingresso riconosciamo la Lavanda dei piedi, l'Annunciazione, la Presentazione al Tempio e i resti di un ampia scena raffigurante la Crocifissione. Nei sottarchi sono raffigurati Santi e Profeti a sinistra, gli Apostoli a destra: dalla prima arcata a sinistra riconosciamo dunque le figure di Sant'Orsola (S. Vittoria ?), S. Domenico, Daniele, Abramo, Simone e un profeta non identificato, S. Pietro martire, S. Lorenzo e S. Savino, S.Caterina d'Alessandria e S. Illuminata da Todi (Maria Maddalena?). Gli studiosi che si sono interessati al ciclo di San Salvatore di Canzano concordano nell'attribuire l'opera sulla base di analisi stilistiche al cosiddetto Maestro di Offida, un anonimo pittore che nel 1367 decora il transetto della chiesa di Santa Maria della Rocca di Offida, da cui deriva il nome convenzionale; le opinioni invece divergono riguardo la datazione degli affreschi e quindi in quale fase del percorso artistico del Maestro far risalire l'esecuzione del ciclo canzanese. Non sono di aiuto le due iscrizioni dipinte fra i riquadri del ciclo, che se da un lato ci restituiscono ancora il nome del committente "dominus Benedictus praepositus ecclesiae", risultano mutile lì dove era indicato il nome dell'autore e la datazione. Considerando che gli affreschi nello stile "non varcano complessivamente il decennio 1330", il Bologna propone di completare le cifre mancanti della datazione arrivando a leggere il 1334 e il 1338; di diverso avviso il Crocetti e il Corrieri che posticipano l'esecuzione del ciclo alla seconda metà del XIV secolo. Completano la ricca decorazione pittorica della chiesa degli affreschi realizzati tra il XV e il XVII secolo. Lungo la navata sinistra in una nicchia sono raffigurati la Madonna con il Bambino in trono e ai suoi piedi un santo vescovo e la raffigurazione della Trinità, con Dio Padre che sostiene la croce con il Cristo; nel sottarco troviamo S. Caterina e S. Giovanni Evangelista; l'opera è stata posta in relazione con la pittura marchigiana di fine Quattrocento. Nella navata destra, nel terzo sottarco, sono dipinte le figure di S. Rocco (S. Giacomo Maggiore per il Corrieri) e di S. Antonio Abate; quest'ultima reca scritto quale anno di esecuzione il 1596. Al 1639 è da far risalire il trittico che troviamo dipinto nella parete sinistra con la raffigurazione di tre Santi a figura intera.

A slow-growing small evergreen tree.
Leaves - dappled pink and green, exceedingly soft new leaflets.
Flowers - crimson-scarlet flowers hang downwards like little Chinese lanterns beneath the foliage primarily on older branches.
Brownea grandiceps, another species of Brownea with blood-red flowers is a larger tree which can grow up to 20 metres in height – the only specimen in Rani Bagh, Mumbai is about 4 metres tall, a specimen of which collected by Father Santapau in 1951 is preserved in the Blatter Herbarium.

Camille Sée (1847-1919) était un homme politique français d’origine alsacienne. Sensible au problème de l’enseignement pour tous, il fut le grand acteur de l’organisation nationale de l’enseignement secondaire des jeunes filles. Plusieurs lycées portent son nom dont un à Colmar, sa ville natale, et un à Paris.
Il repose au cimetière de Montmartre où une gracieuse sculpture anonyme datée de 1903 orne sa tombe.

Since the origin of the event in 1967, the annual Sandhurst Military Skills Competition has grown in stature as a international one as well. Craig Knapp visits the "origin" of the Franka Kamerawerks (factory) at the site of 17 Insel Strasse, Bayreuth, Germany (home of owner? before the move in 1919 to 09-11 Jahnstrasse) .
I am holding my 1951 Franka Rolfix 6x9cm (120mm film) folding camera which I shoot with frequently, developing the film and making prints in my own "traditional wet darkroom".
I could not find a building with the address of 17, but there is an empty lot over my right shoulder, the next place to the right in the photo is 11, then the numbers jump to 23...but I am in the right area.

Cooper-Molera Adobe, a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is an important historic site in Monterey, California, representing the complex and diverse history of the origins of modern California.
The principal adobe house, first occupied by Captain John Rogers Cooper and his wife Encarnacion Vallejo de Cooper, dates to 1827; other portions of the property were later subdivided and developed for use by families of both Anglo and Mexican heritage—including the adjacent Diaz Adobe, the Spear Warehouse, and the Corner Store operated for many years by Manuel Diaz.
The property is presently operated as a historic site by California State Parks as part of the Monterey State Historic Park. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a private non-profit organization, acquired Cooper-Molera Adobe and its associated Cooper family collections from the estate of Frances Molera (a direct descendent of John Cooper) in 1972. No endowment was provided by the estate, although $50,000 was granted to support restoration costs, which were significant given the condition of the property.
At the time, commercial options (specifically a bank proposal) were initially considered, but the State of California stepped in, offering to restore the property and operate it as a house museum within the Monterey State Historic Park. In response, the National Trust granted a long term lease of Cooper-Molera and its associated collections to California State Parks (CSP), on the condition that CSP restore the property and
operate it as a part of the Monterey State Historic Park.
